This woman, with all of the privileges, accolades, and fame, reached way down into her ancient past and brought out the pathos and despair of a another woman who knew deep, true hurt. Some can recognize the pain but some have lived the pain of generations. This was a riveting solo by a captivating Diva of Divas. I wept throughout. Thank you for posting this.
Wow! Riveting performance by the one and only Kathleen Battle. The soul, texture, depth, and richness in sound of the African-American opera singer is very distinct and unique born out of their experiences, history, and heritage. How lucky the opera and classical world is to have the likes of KB, Jessye, Leontyne, Verrett, Bumbry, and others leave their lasting mark on the music of Puccini, Verdi, Mozart, Strauss to name a few. 👏👏👏
Amen, I truly agree with you, serious!!! My 9 year old granddaughter sings opera, and Kathleen Battle is her FAVORITE and my FAVORITE, too!!! Her magnificent voice makes me feel pathos way down deep within my spirit!
My only regret, apart from not seeing this live, is that I always imagined Jessie Norman giving her a hug after this song. I heard the CD a million times. How could anyone not cry. So much pain expressed so powerfully. Bravo Ms. Battle.
My, My, My! what a riveting, spell-binding performance! How she was able to dig down that deep and bring up the pain and suffering that so many of the slaves just HAD to feel, I will never know! I'm sitting here listening to this over and over and can even see the pain etched in her facial expressions. She has me feeling what it must have been like! If this doesn't move you, you are truly soulless!! Thanks also to the flute and background voices, and thanks for uploading this!!!!
Lord, how come me here? Lord, how come me here? Lord, how come me here? I wish I never was born There ain't no freedom here, Lord There ain't no freedom here, Lord There ain't no freedom here, Lord I wish I never was born They treat me so mean here, Lord They treat me so mean here, Lord They treat me so mean here, Lord I wish I never was born They sold my chillen away, Lord They sold my chillen away, Lord They sold my chillen away, Lord I wish I never was born Lord, how come me here? Lord, how come me here? Lord, how come me here? I wish I never was born I wish I never was born I wish I never was born
AMAZING!! The performance by all captured it.... I'm sure this is what the conversations were like in the slave quarters. Women after women telling their horrible stories of the day and the moaning of those that listened.
Jessye did not sing this song, so she was not "cut out." This is a solo by Battle. She and Norman had duets in this concert, but they both did numerous solos.

I can feel this song all the way from Jamaica. Shared ancestral experiences. Hard to applaud, yet hard to be silent.
The flute player is non other than the great Hubert Laws. from Houston, Texas
Fantastic performance from a largely underrated world top performer.
This moved me to my inner core. Just beautiful and moving!!!!
Oh Wow what a glorious voice and a brilliant interpretation. The flautist was divine too
💐🌻💐THIS IS A VERY, VERY SAD SLAVERY SPIRITUAL SONG, "LORD👑, HOW COME ME HERE💐🌹💐
This is incredibly real, raw, and beautiful. ..it so movingly captures the voice of the slaves in a way that no other song I've heard has.

The lyrics are terrifying, but of course interpreted masterfully by Kathleen Battle.

Jesse Norman doesn't sing in this particular song. You can see her in the video of the full concert.
