I misquoted Dr Michelle Wong! Aka lab muffin. It was NINE passes of a sunscreen stick but that only gets you roughly an SPF of 19. Which is why sunscreen sticks are only recommended for top ups (depending on the UV / outdoor activities etc) and spray sunscreens aren’t much better! Which is why sun cream is the best option always!

That tanning app is insane! My mom is a 19-year melanoma survivor. My dad just had melanoma surgery last week. We've all three had many, many "pre-cancerous moles" , "atypical" moles, and carcinomas removed. My great grandfather died of melanoma. It's NOT something to mess around with.

My mom lost a cousin to melanoma. He was 17. Realized something was wrong and had it removed from his face a year or so prior, but they didn’t realize they missed some until after it had reached his brain. Her family is much like yours. Her father, grandmother, a couple of siblings, and numerous aunts/uncles/cousins have all had melanomas. Those who haven’t have still had other cancers, pre-cancers, and worrisome spots removed and are all regular guests at their local dermatologists. My siblings and I all have regular skin-mapping done because we’ve seen first hand how quickly a simple spot can turn bad.

I've been looking for the perfect toned foundation these past months as well, so I thought I might share it in case you (or another fellow cool and pale skinned human) would be interested to know what I was able to find! the Shiseido glow serum foundation in the shade 110 alabaster is phenomenal!! the perfect cool tone with zero warmth in it and it gives the skin such a beautiful, porcelain-like glow. It is a very, very light shade so much so that I was a bit unsure at the beginning if it wasn't too white for me! I was baffled. the Maybelline perfect match foundation in the shade 95 is also great although I have to add that it is a cool-neutral shade. and the Dior glow foundation -as well as the matt version in the shade 00 and 00,5 are also amazing! so far, these are the best fitting foundations I have been able to find. 10:11 Honestly as someone with very fair cool toned skin, there’s always been a big discrepancy in the fairer shades too, very similar to that of people with darker skin and even just people with olive undertones. For me, they’re all either too yellow or too dark. Some are even unnaturally pink. I’ve recently been searching for a new foundation that doesn’t look too beige on me with the finish I want and I’ve found next to none I’m satisfied with. Speaking on just the foundation issue, not accounting for anything else, there’s definitely a problem and she has a very valid point. Irish people are some of the palest on the planet. I myself am translucent I’m so pale. Irish make up brands don’t even go pale enough for their own natural skin tones. Fake tan has ruined make up. Everything skews orange.
Erin Parsons is much more knowledgeable than me and she says it too. All the old Mac favourites, such as 90’s spice lipliner were actually neutral or cool toned.
I can’t buy drug store foundation going by online descriptions, got a Maybelline foundation that said Neutral. It’s so orange. I have to add so much blue mixer.

I understand why the yt woman is upset about not finding her shade, I am a light to medium but struggle to find the right undertone. Why doesn’t she demand that from brands that historically cater to yt people and are yt owned?? That’s the majority of brands?? I understand Fenty’s whole thing is they try to cater to all skin tones but obviously as a black owned brand trying to fill a gap in the market for black people, they’re going to mainly cater to black people. I don’t see why any of us yt folks would be mad about that??

I think it's the fact that they state on their website that all of their products cater to "all skin types and tones," and that is not necessarily true. That is false marketing. These products are then marketed at everyone, yet they don't offer a very light shade for people with pale skin, so then the brand is actually for medium to dark skin tones.

But to say that Fenty is a brand that is inclusive to all is clearly not true here. Lush had a DIY foundation where you bought a white base, an undertone (pink or yellow) and dark and light pigments to mix your own perfect shade. I don't understand why not more brands have done this. An idea would be to use an app to tell you your shade and generate a recipe for mixing your own personal foundation. It would be more environmentally friendly as the company doesn't have to make as many products.

I wanted to create awareness in my country that pale and darker skin exist, but only get, as a reply, "we will consider that for future launches" (waiting for one since 2016, with some requesting afterwards, without any visible action). So I feel this girl.

I feel the pale girl, as someone with rosacea/acne prone skin I have spent most of my adult life having to choose between no makeup and feeling awful about my appearance or wearing makeup that's too dark and/or yellow and getting to feel awful for different reasons. I've been happy since Korean makeup came over, I've finally been able to find cooler toned pale makeup I can use, but that whole new market opening up is still only helping pale folks. Those brands don't generally make deep tones.
We deserve inclusion too, and I agree a brand can't advertise as *fully* inclusive if they're not catering to the *whole* range of skin tones, so I get her frustration there and I don't think she should be dragged for voicing that frustration, but honestly I'm not bothered as the selection for dark shades is still Not Good. There's a lot of brands that technically have darker shades but the undertones are all wrong so while they're *technically* out there, people of those dark skin tones still can't use them without looking like an overcooked carrot or a week-old corpse. And I think that would make me feel worse than any slightly dark/yellow shade has ever made me feel. Those of us who are very pale can also do things like mixing white into foundations to help a bit. Heavily melanated people can't just mix in black.

  • @hannahl1477

I completely understand your argument about how the woman's sunscreen shade is the un-tinted OG version, but then at that point I think Fenty would do well to remove the lightest foundation shades from the Shade 1 lineup. I am very fair-skinned and the eaze drop shade 1 is my go-to foundation for everyday makeup, but I swatched the sunscreen that *should* fit my shade and it was far too yellow and warm. If shade 1 for the sunscreen was marketed as fitting eaze drop shades 2-4 instead of including 1 as well, then I think the argument of "her shade is un-tinted" would hold up better, in my opinion. Fenty does still hold the accountability for suggesting that the sunscreen shade 1 can fit the palest of the pale, when it cannot.

I apply sunscreen in layers per section of my face/body to help make sure I don’t miss a spot. Applying on my back is hard though, so I don’t often go out in the sun without clothing covering most or all of my back. Sometimes I’ll even wear a UPF-rated top or jacket, if I know I’ll be out in the sun most of the day.
Since melanoma’s been mentioned in this thread: cancer’s not the only skin damage the sun can cause. My skin tone’s in Fenty’s medium range (in some other brands, I’m either deep tan or medium deep) and I have melasma plus other random hyperpigmentation. I’m also in my 50s. Sunscreen has helped protect my skin from worsened hyperpigmentation, excessive wrinkles, leathery texture, increased acne, and other types of skin barrier damage. None of those things are worse, health wise, than skin cancer, but they’re all still skin damage.

  • @MrVinceMunro

The girl with the fair skin is right, most foundations are either yellow or orange. But alot of us pale people have very cool, pinkish undertones. The white cast of a sunscreen can make you look even more pale btw, that's why we use them too, to add that pop of healthy glow back.
The way I fix it is to buy a concealer or foundation closest to my skintone. So that's once rosy/cool toned one, which is still yellow compared to my skin. Then I mix it with a cool toned red/pink liqued blush on my hand to get a perfect colour match. It works perfectly! If the colour is still too warm you can add in a little bit of blue colour corrector (liquid).
I know it sounds like alot of work, but once you know your personal mix a bit it's very easy. At the moment I use the NARS radiant creamy concealer in the color Vanilla (which is very greyish beige) and mix that with a spot of the NARS liquid blush Dolce Vita. I use these two because the textures mix very well.

Brands not having shade ranges that include the Fairest shades is not rooted in the same systemic and cultural factors as even Not That Deep shades being left out or poorly created. Yeah it can be hard for me to find a foundation shade that works, but I don't need to "BUT WHAT ABOUT ME" whenever people of color express how there's NO shades for them in MOST brand's shade ranges. They are excluded on purpose, whereas I think very fair shades are just not included because brands think they're going light enough or that we want to fake-tan it up. If anything, very pale people should be amplifying the calls for more inclusive ranges instead of going "WELL BUT ME TOO THOUGH". Better representation and inclusivity only helps EVERYONE. More shades and undertones and all that means more people can get workable shades, all across the board.
