    I know this is an aging video now but man what good fortune. That is in way better shape than any free boat I have ever seen. A free Catalina 30 that requires minimal small task items to have tons of fun. You have been given the dream of many. Don't play it down so much. Lots of folks would consider this boat the opportunity of a lifetime as a boat of this caliber is otherwise out of reach for them. Be happy.

    We love our Catalina 30.... 1983 MK I Tall Rig. We got her for free 18 months ago. We re-engined her, replaced all the plumbing and countertops and sinks. All new Garmin electronics.... too much to list here. We got caught in a gnarly squall on Long Island Sound last season, and she performed flawlessly. She’s a beast of a boat. A lot tougher than you’d think for a “coastal cruiser”. Super comfy and roomy for a 30 footer. If you keep yours, you’ll fall in love!
    P.S. Make sure you re-glaze and re-seal the windows! Catalina Direct sells a kit.

    I had a Jaguar 27, (1974) which was actually really a Catalina 27 made under licence in UK. It was beautiful and a great boat to learn on, very sea worthy but forgiving of a clumsy beginner. I hope you enjoy every day with her

    Catalina 30 is a miracle boat. Tons of fun, sails well, acres of room inside. There’s a reason they sold about 6500 of them.

    I have had a Catalina 27 and two Catalina 30's. I love these boats. I find it very roomy for a thirty. The engine is crazy easy to work on. You can even remove the kitchen island and it provides even more access to the engine. Its easy to sail and forgiving. Comfy ride for a 30 thanks to its wide beam. More Catalina 30's have been built than any other so there are so many people that still own them (like me). There is a huge online presence and people have added so many different options over the years. I think you will love it. I own two sailboats. A Macgregor 26X for trailer trips and this for comfy days and nights on the Chesapeake. I plan to sail the 30 up and down the east coast, from maritime Canada to the Caribbean. Not a boat for crossing the Atlantic, but for sure it handles coastal sailing with ease.

      The amount of info and availability of parts for these boats is very refreshing coming from an older boat fore sure. It does seem like a very comfortable boat and I think the wife will really like that! Excited to sail it!

    Ben, you can come out and race with us again and get all the sailing experience you want anytime. I've found racing is a great teacher. You're out in conditions you wouldn't normally go out in (like the race you came along on), there's almost always close encounters, and you have to trim the sails to direction you need to go, not go the direction you're trimmed for. Another nice video, liked seeing Bill and Sea Gypsy in it.

    The absolute best way to learn sailing is to volunteer and crew on your local beer-can weekday (PHRF) race boats. Racers are always looking for crew and you will learn what makes a boat go fast, what boats can handle, and make friends in the sailing community. Catalina 30s are great family cruisers that are well made production boats. Very strong user association, and Catalina Direct has all the parts you may need. They are a tad slow since they trade room for performance, but that is no big deal. Your old boat has much more character and style. Since you are redoing the interior you have the advantage of looking at efficiencies of modern day designs and incorporating those features in your CL.

    The Catalina 30 is a remarkably strong boat and quite forgiving, underestimated for a number of reasons, but when compared to others in her range, one will be surprised. There is a Catalina 30 owner's fleet in Kenah. They meet at least once per month and offer considerable experience and knowledge specific to the C30, including just about anything one needs to know from engine work, the hull, rigging, etc. Almost every Harvest Moon Regatta, a 150 mile off-shire race in October from Galveston to Port Aransas has at least one C30 and they come home with good results. The local group is Fleet 10. Next meeting is first Saturday in April, 10:00 at Waterford clubhouse (their March meeting was today). See you there!

    Hold the tiller extension like a microphone and put it on your lap. This will take a bit of getting used to bc I saw you holding it up and like a frying pan. The reason I say this is it’s just a better way to do it and you will move your rudder less. This will make you go a little faster because it reduces drag when you keep your rudder as straight as possible. Also you will sail straighter and have an easier time reacting to puffs and shifts and waves and things. If it’s hard to steer with a tiller that’s called weather helm. You can adjust the tuning of your sails and the boat to fix this. You may already know all this but you said somewhere you don’t have a ton of experience so here’s a few tips!

    That automated router could be a money maker. I see a few people including myself that need to replace their ports but you destroy the trim in the process. I didn't know what I was going to do. I thought about having stainless sheet machined on a water saw. But if you can make teak trim I would be a customer. I ended up just patching, filling and painting the teak and living with it. Cheoy Lee Offshore 33 Ketch.

    • @SailBros
      @SailBros  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m definitely looking into making some money with it. That trim is tricky. I destroyed most of mine removing it too. It was so thin from being sanded over the years anyways. I’ve been trying to figure out how to remake the trim for a long time now. I think this is going to work though. When it comes time to replace your trim let me know. Maybe I can cut some out for you!

    Hint: Put breakers on all the individual circuits using something like "Blue Sea Systems ST Blade Fuse Blocks". You have complete control of the fuses that should have blown, way before any fire and damage. Use the proper gauge wire for the load--I do not think who ever wired it knew what they were doing. Most devices say what the recommended wire size should be.

    Rule #1 if you want to become a better sailor, always wear a personal floatation device as soon as you leave the dock, otherwise you may not live long enough to become a skilled sailor. Second, take a US Sailing or ASA basic keelboat course. Your local power squadron will also often provide free safety and skill classes. Eventually work your way up through the accreditation curriculum to at least bare boat cruising. Third, find out where in your area there are local “beer can” races and weekend sanctioned races such as by OYRA. Best way to build your sailing skills is working your way up the racing ranks on other people’s boats.

    first thing I see is it is DRY.... so it's simple work, as must as you want to put into it... Some staining , redo the cushions ... I don't recall you speaking of the sails , but that would be relevant

    I want to see that boat shining while it's working on the high seas it doesn't mean anything when it's sitting at dock looking good in which the inside looks good except for the floor, it should be looking good Wireless sailing

    You have carpentry skills and you can swing a brush ….. What are you waiting for ??? You just need to assess cost for the transfer and current mooring . Then sell it .
