My fondest memories as a kid in the 60's and 70's was watching the parade as the smell of Thanksgiving dinner took over the house...
My Mom always had a wooden bowl filled with nuts to crack and eat during the parade!
My mom passed away 28 years ago. I can still see her in the kitchen cooking while we watched the parade
When I was a small child growing up in the 60s and 70s I used to watch the parade all the time and I would never miss a beat when watching the parade. It always gave me the chance to be excited for the holidays, and seeing Santa Claus at the end of the parade made me very excited back then! But now that I am 65 years old I still get the feeling that whenever Thanksgiving comes around the parade comes around. And it's how fitting that I can watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade a half an hour earlier! And for 96 years it always started around 9 AM. But now a new tradition starts, the parade now starts at 8:30 AM. And that will give me a chance to get up and start watching it a little earlier.
I remember when it was a parade...not a made for TV glorification of Broadway acts (which isn't a bad thing) and pop stars trying to peddle their latest "music." Thanks for this look back!

They should go back to just SHOWING the parade,not an endless parade of musical acts, which is,unfortunately,what it's evolved into in the last 20-odd years. It's not a real parade anymore.

@@bluejedi723 don’t mind the Broadway shows, it’s all the talking by the hosts. I want to hear and see the bands! Moar bands, please. Also less lip syncing pop stars - although I guess to attract a young audience they need to include this. I guess the audience is too “sophisticated “ to get excited by the balloons and floats.

Always watched Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade....I had, also, marched in the parade in the 60's with a 'Twirling Group' from Huntington, Long Island....We were a National Twirling Group at that time. 🌹♥️🙏👽🤗✍️☕
My twin n I matched in parades also twirling batons w out dancing school or gymnastics ✨🤗🤗but not Macy's That's Great!!! 😁‼️✨

My dad marched in the Macy’s day parade from 50’s-60’s he was in the drum and bugle corp Hawthorn Caballeros
We've come a long way! Having lived in NYC, as a child, I'd sit and watch on TV with my dad. I went maybe twice to take my children, yet enjoyed more in the comfort of our warm home... Went with family in Nov of 2018 which was the coldest Thanksgiving Day Parade in 100 years. Figure that out. Our feet froze even though we used toe warmers... From now on, I'll watch from home in The Sunshine State. Lol.... It isn't worth it anymore. Sadly it isn't family oriented like it used to be! Ok, I'm sentimental now! 😢

Have been watching for many years. I have to agree, the 60's and 70's parades were pretty remarkable. Oh, and I watch my copy of Miracle on 34th Street every year!

I grew up on the Upper West Side. 71 and B'way. Very year I would walk to Central Park West and watch the parade.on 77 th Street they would blow up the balloons. You could watch it.Absolutely fantastic as both a child and adult. The one year I had the opportunity to sit at the VIP section in front of Macys. one word describe my experience. WOW!
I always thought that was one of the cool things to do. Watch them blow up the balloons the night before. So cool. My brother lived over on the East River 23rd St. but he'd take my niece & nephew to see them.

I haven't missed a Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in 63 years. Not even the year I had to tape it and watch it later.
I can remember getting up in the wee hours of a cold chilly morning, standing over a coal furnace heat vent with cookie & soon hot coco to start my glorious day. I'm nearly 70 now and my heart is still a child's heart. I wake up early to this vay day, grab my warm drink & cookie sit in my chair looking at the clock ticking down to that special time, " Thanksgiving Day Parade ". As I look back yesterday's may have been cold & poor but our hearts were filled with love and soon Christmas. Believe this or not I have the same routine at almost 70 for Christmas.
I get up early turn my tree lights on grab my drink & cookie sit in my chair with my cat waiting for my husband to arise so we can enjoy another glorious day together..he loves the Holidays like me..we are still kids at heart.
I was a balloon boy, Thanksgiving Day 1959. I always talk about it. My family delayed their dinner so that I could return to Jackson Heights to join them. Was paid a total of $6, before taxes. But I was a kid and had a great day. Probably the best job I ever had. (Ha, ha)

I was looking for something chill to put on in the background while I build and paint minis and I got so distracted by how good the food looks I totally stopped what I was doing and watched six or seven in a row. The food looks incredible and these recipes/walkthroughs are so user-friendly and encouraging! Can't wait to make some of these!

I record the parades in the morning, let them run during the day. The drums in the marching bands are my favorite. After dinner, it's Trains, Plains & Automobiles, one of my Son's favorite movies. Now it's a Thanksgiving Tradition.

I love the 1947 version of Miracle on 34th Street. I used to watch the parade every year. I missed a few years because I had to work on Thanksgiving I’m an RN). When I had a chance to watch it again, I had no idea who most of the celebrities were. I still enjoy the floats and the marching bands, and of course Santa. 🎄🎄🎄
While I certainly agree with your comments, if you really think about it, it has always been one big commercial for Macy’s. It just wasn’t as disruptive as the current parade format.

Another great Recollection! My favorite memories would be of Thanksgiving morning with the TV on as the parade took place while my mom made thanksgiving dinner in the kitchen. Oh that wonderful smell of turkey, stuffing, gravy, cranberry sauce, celery, in the air and sound of cold gingerale/hawaiian punch and ice cubes pouring into the punch bowl as Andy (our dog) followed Momma around the kitchen anticipating scraps and handouts with great hope and expectation.

For our family college football was the Thanksgiving entertainment in the 70's. After the feast all the guys would retire to the TV room while the women cleaned up and did the dishes. But they didn't mind because as they worked they talked and gossiped about everything. So everyone got "entertainment".
Thanks for a very interesting video of this tradition. However, it's a terrible shame what they've done to the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. It's become nothing but a 3-hour advertisement. But such is the way of capitalism run amok. When I was a child in the 50's, it was designed purely to entertain, with kids being the primary focus. I can't even stand to watch it any more because every minute is now strategically designed to sell/promote something/somebody. They never fail to keep me constantly aware that we're all being manipulated for our $$$. The old fashioned sense of authentic joy we all used to experience in watching the parade (when it was an actual parade) is long gone.

It makes me SICK what they have done to a great Holiday parade. In the 50's and 60's it was for the kids. Not some big advertisment and to push messages to the youth. I will never buy anything from perversion that they are trying to push. Pay attention to commercials if you look for it you will find it!!!🤬🤬.

went once in 1968....was 7....my moms crazy friend got us to the front of the crowd by using crutches and a neckbrace to fake an injury

For our family the parade officially begins the Christmas season! The most exciting part when we were kids was the arrival of Santa. This would fill the room with jumping and cheering! Our neighbors must of thought we were crazy! My grandchildren have maintained the tradition.
I watch the parade every year I look forward to it. It is such a beautiful parade. This is one of my traditions and I see the parade it makes me think of how thankful I am
I grew up in Brooklyn in the 1960’s and ‘70s. I was the youngest of four boys and my parents watched the parade every year. I started attending the parade in person in 1973 and did so until 1980. I left NY in August of 1981 when I joined the Navy. I really enjoyed attending the parade. We had a spot we liked at about 63rd street. We would attend the parade and then take the subway back to Brooklyn and have thanksgiving dinner. Those were wonderful times and helped make Thanksgiving my favorite holiday even up to today.

The producers of the original Miracle On 34th Street originally wanted to feature Gimbel's Department Store, but they declined to participate in the film.
As a kid, I couldn't wait to see the newest balloon in the parade.
I grew up in NJ. Our homes were built on an old Gimbel estate. Beautiful old stone mansion w/great views.

For over a decade now I have been left saying "Who are these celebrities? Never heard of him/her." My favorite parade is The Tournament of Roses Parade on New Year's Day.
I was born in Boston in 1960, as a kid I would watch the parade on tv to see the giant balloons, to see what new ones or old favorites like snoopy and Charlie brown, it was cool.
I was lucky to be in 15 parades and bro work in the Studio with Manfred Bass for 7+ years. THE BEST JOB EVER!
I love to see the high school marching bands! They come in the cold in their brand, spanking new uniforms and I think of the thrill it is for them to have traveled together - usually for hours, by bus - from all over America to get to perform in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. I think of all the hard work and all those band practices, all the fundraisers, bake sales, car washes and everything that went into getting these kids there. I really love to see these kids from everywhere and to think that most are in New York City for the very first time and how big and spectacular that must be through their eyes and here they are performing on national tv on Thanksgiving! I love that!

I am from Canada but still watch the parade every year when I can.It started with my parents/family watching it and even missing school some years on this day when we were little. It was like a starting date to get going on xmas decorations/shopping 🎄. I know I'm a Canadian but that day still feels special to me and I have passed it down to my daughter to continue the tradition. Happy Holidays Everyone 🎅🤶

When I was a kid it just wasn't Thanksgiving without the family sitting in front of what is now considered a tiny TV set watching the parade. I love your channel but sometimes it makes me very sad. We have lost so much of our identity as a nation and what has replaced it hasn't been better or good. I hope someday we find our way back home.

I haven't watched The Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade since 2013 and that was only to see Santa. Hopefully, the parade in 2021 will be a great success. Thanks for this fun and informative video. I'm feeling even more "nostalgic" for the 1950s/early 1960s. It's bittersweet when I realize that we'll never go that way again.
My daughter was in the marching band at her high school. They were chosen to March in the Macy’s Parade. This is a small school in a small town in Wisconsin. The band had just got all new uniforms. They put the names of all the bands in a hat?. Drew out names in order to march. My daughters high school drew first and led off the parade. It was so awesome watching them dance and the band perform in front of the executives and dignitaries in front of Macy’s. They looked great!
I know, and a very happy and proud mom to watch her baby in the parade... My daughter is 45 and I still say "My baby" 😊

I never attended a Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade but i watched it on television especially back in the 70s & 80s, today you can view it in high definition.

There was nothing I looked forward to more as a child in the 60's & 70's than watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade from beginning to end knowing that Santa Claus would officially appear at the conclusion of the Parade to begin the Christmas season. Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol & Babes in Toyland almost always aired Thanksgiving evening on the local TV Channels. These cherished memories help me keep my sanity it a world & country that is getting progressively worse.

When I was growing up in the 1970s my grandmother cooked most of the Thanksgiving meal. Her kichenette had a counter that lead from her entrance to the cooking area to the back door, She had a small tv there and always watched the parade while cooking. I am the person who cooks most of the TG dinner now, and I have to have the parade on in the background, I may not get to watch much of it, but I like the sound . I get to see bits and pieces. I dont remember if we watched the dog show afterwards, but we do that here,.
Haven't watched since my mom passed in 2011 but Macy's sure know's how to put on a show with the parade and 4th of July hopefully they never go out of business................
I remember my mom waking me up very early to watch the parade (we were on the west coast time difference) on our old black and white Packard Bell maple cabinet TV, she brought me hot chocolate and I would watch the parade. I was 4 years old in 1964, and I've watched every year since. Thanks for the memories! 🥲
When I was a little girl, I watched the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on NBC-TV every year. It was hosted by Lorne Greene (from "Bonanza") and Betty White from 1962 until ten years later. In 1973, it was hosted by Martin Milner & Kent McCord (both from "Adam-12"). Another year had passed, it was also hosted by Karen Grassle (from "The Little House" series), David Hartman (from "The Bold Ones" & "Lucas Tanner") and Ed McMahon (from "The Johnny Carson Show"). And the rest was history. Nowadays, I carried on the tradition by watching "The Annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade" on NBC-TV year after year after year. Always & forever. Miracle on 34th Street. I personally knew someone in the parade back in the 80s. Cold as a biotch that day!!!
Watched the parade on TV every year starting when I was a kid and continued into my adult years. Introduced my girls to it probably when they were two or three. Enjoyed it so much! Watching for favorite balloons, seeing the new music acts, the Rockettes, the floats - all were great.
We went one year to see it in person but it wasn't the same. Hard to see the balloons, if you were in the wrong spot, you missed some of the music acts, plus the crowds and the weather was miserable that year. It wasn't raining but it was misty and cold 🥶. We had four or five layers of clothes on and snow boots but we were freezing. Taking the train at 5 am on a holiday is much better than during rush hour 😃. Never again. Back home on the couch with hot chocolate every year after that. Enjoy it with my grandchildren now.

I'm one of those that enjoy the parade every single year since I was a young boy. I would never miss the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade for anything, 496 years they've always started at 9:00 a.m. but now this year they start at 8:30 a.m. and I think that's a very good idea because an extra half-hour would give me a chance to watch more of the parade! That is why I would never skip a beat on watching the parade itself but since I'm in my mid-60s now I can still get the chance to watch it because it makes me think like I'm a kid all over again. That's why I get very excited at this time of year when the parade comes around.

if the announcers would just STFU and not talked and we didn't have commercials every 5 minutes, the parade would be far more enjoyable. I like it on youtube because of this.

I remember watching my first Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. It was in 2000 when I was 5 years old, I loved seeing Big Bird, Barney, Cassie, and even Ronald McDonald, just to name a few of the balloons.
When I was growing up we had a tradition. Every year my grandmother would call asking if my brother and I saw Santa. To us kids it meant Christmas was coming and we could start getting excited. Now I continue watching the parade calling my nephew and asking him if he saw Santa just sa my grandma did with me years ago. We also talk about our favorite balloons.
Oh my goodness, I noticed the advertisement of the "Camel Cigarettes." I have never smoked in my life, and don't like the smell! But as a little girl I used to enjoy looking up and see the smoke come out of the mans' mouth while walking down 42nd St... Sweet, sweet memories of my dad and I 🥰
I loved to watch the parade as a kid in the 1960's. My favorites were the float Tom Turkey and the balloons Bullwinkle Moose and TV cartoon character Underdog.
Grew up in NJ only 60 miles from NYC, now even shorter with the ferries. Go to the HS game, come home, watch parade & games on. But through that 4 day weekend my brothers & I always watched March of the Wooden Soldiers w/Laurel & Hardy, King Kong & Mighty Joe Young on WPIX 11.
I think I'm going to cry. You sent me right back to the best years of my life. I remember those and WPIX got me teary eyed.

I watch the parade on television but I am lucky enough to watch the Macy's Holiday Parade at Universal Studios Florida every year...true it's not the same but it's still fun to be a part of the festivities.
I love the parade, I went when I lived in New York, now I don't miss it in Puerto Rico on TV.
You should do a video on the oldest 4th of July parade in the country in Bristol Rhode Island.
I think there has only been a handful of times that I have not watched it. When I was younger, I used to right down all the balloons, in the order that they went by.
I didn't get to see the Macy's Thanksgiving parade in it's entirety until I was an adult. My parents always had chores for us to do!
I worked at Macy’s in the mid ‘90’s during Christmas. A group of employees went down to NYC to help out with the parade (holding balloon float ropes). I am so mad that I didn’t go! That would have been awesome!
I got to live through the better days in America and now I'm living in the worst days of America all because of CROOKED POLITICIANS dividing a once great Nation.

A video/film of the 1920s Macy's inside the store during the holiday season would be wonderful to see.

I saw the parade sometime in the late 60s with my family - it was too many people in one place just a few blocks north of Macy's on Broadway (38th & B'way? - I can't remember exactly) but great balloons and marching bands. I saw it alone in the later 90s at 38th & Broadway - good, but let's say it's much better on television.
I went to New York while in high school. Was able to sit on the balcony from hotel & watch parade. I remember being able to look way down to what was coming. I bought a belt at Macy’s. The store was very posh & the window decorations were excellent. The best part of the parade was seeing Santa, as a child or now as an adult. Thank you for posting this. Been fun reminiscing!
The store windows were so intricate and ornate! All of them! ...Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, Saks, Lord and Taylor... to see the Christmas store windows alone was a treat! Yes, thanks for the memory!
I hope there will be a video lookback on those store Christmas windows. They really were a work of art with all the moving pieces ....like a Swiss watch, doors opening and closing precisely, figurines of people and animals moving around. It was something special to see the creativity in all those Christmas window themes!

I haven’t been to NYC during the Christmas season in more than 10 years but I did see this year’s Macy’s windows were just unveiled last night and there’s a youtube video of the windows and in-store decorations posted by “actionkid.” It’s still full of creativity! Oh dear, I keep thinking of this video. I was just watching "Sunday Morning" (a program I watch faithfully) They showed Horn and Hardart restaurants. One of them stood near Macy's. I used to eat there. Gimbal's was also shown. My thoughts flashed right back to the 1960s. My very first job was B Altman & Co, that stood at the corner of 34th Street... I am so happy for this video! 🥰
Awe thank you ! I have to admit I stopped watching many years ago. 🙁 It became more of showing off new talent and less coverage of floats.
Sad thing today is that companies like Macy's, JC Penny's..et al won't even mention the words "Christmas, Thanksgiving.." because they are afraid of offending a Minority in this country who are offended by watching paint dry!

Have you noticed, those companies you mentioned are struggling now. 1 reason is online from Amazon, Ebay etc but the main reason is their thinking and trying to be PC for a minority of people instead of the kids enjoyment. I haven't watch the parade since the 90s. PC is killing the heart of America. I picture that the parade will disappear from the holiday season lexicon.

We watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade every year. Love the floats, balloons, bands, singers, and dancers

Yep, i would have to say the sixties and seventies were the best. Popular commentators narrating the Parade, added something special, a kind of twinkle lacking today. Sure do miss those times!
