About Jewelry and Hairpins. Its a sign actually for "This Person is mine" or "don't think about to mess with her" casually explained. I love Maomao, the borderliner xD
That's clearly how it starts, but the show remains short on detail of what's the expected back and forth that follows, or what the beats mean. All we know for sure is that maomao doesn't know or care, and her friends at the pavilion love the drama
14:00 What I love so much about Jinshi giving Maomao his hairpin that not many people catch, is that it is his way of offering protection to make up for Maomao having her freckles removed. She wore freckles as a defense so as to not be approached by those who have ill intentions, but they were removed for the garden party. By Jinshi giving his hairpin to Maomao, he’s marking her as “taken,” (even though she isn’t really) so she will have some protection during the party from any men looking for unmarked women. That’s also the reason why Lady Gyokuyou gave her ladies-in-waiting nice jewelry pieces.
When i watched it I thought he brought ingrediens for the warming candy, its a nice gesture if its a bribe it shows how Maomao is rising in the hierarchy
With this anime, it's better to put ourselves with the point of view of that era, like there are things that are not allowed now, may be allowed back then or things that were okay but not okay now or things that were not okay back then but okay now. Most of the times, realize or not, we put our pov in today's logic, understandable.... Just because we put ourselves in that era, we don't really have to agree to all things (like the politics, like how they can sell family members to have one less mouth to feed, consent, etc), but simply imagine if we are in the same situation in that era or simply imagine why a person does something... sometimes we also simply know very little about the era, like what was allowed and not allowed, the culture, politics, etc....
Exactly, there are some things that now we are like what the hell??? but yeah it's because of today's logic but the anime is on that logic so if someone is not gonna understan that, i feel like the anime is not for them
I feel like it is easy to look at other people as just a presence in your life until you actually know their story. Then that person becomes very real. That's what that freckles scene was - Jinshi probably saw Maomao as an important presence but not really as a person with a story and feelings. I think the whole "toy" thing was already fading, since Maomao has proven her value already but her humanity really hit home once he heard her story. I think he's hooked at this point and not likely to treat her lightly again.
3:21 In episode 2 a military officer sent buns with aphrodisiac to Jinshi to seduce him. Jinshi pulled a reverse uno card, gave the aphrodisiac made by Maomao to a female palace servant and made her (or helped her) seduce the "woman hating" (gay) military officer as revenge.
I don't like it when Jinshi did it to maomao like that ..He always do whatever he want without her consent.. In facts in almost every chinese traditional drama always do that (So far that I watch)...I get it he did it just to make her becamo hos ow. And in order to keep her safe but.....😅 How should I explain it.... Anyway, ext episode gonna be interesting and one of the concubine have amazing story.
Its part of the setting if you couldn’t tell women are objects in this time they are people but ultimately they’re a commodity also jinshi has his personal attachment thing with his “toys”
the time setting is not from today's setting, what Jinshi did may not be agreeable but that time men could do worse to women or higher status could do worse to lower status...
Lady Gyokuyou puts the necklace on her and literally says: "Remember, you are MY lady in waiting" That's fine because it's a she... But when Jinshi offers the same thing with the words "Sorry, it's yours" That's suddenly bad because consent... ohhhh the double standards are strong with this one....

That was a very good explanation thank you i kind of knew but didn't fully grasp it until i read your comment❤
At least the cook brought a food bribe for Maomao sewing those warmer pockets. Maomao's freckles are like Clark Kent's glasses.
When i watched it I thought he brought ingrediens for the warming candy, its a nice gesture if its a bribe it shows how Maomao is rising in the hierarchy
Unfortunately, the cook was bringing along ingredients to have Maomao show him how to make the warming candy for the Emperor.

The Pure, Wise, Virtuous in their titles are not meant to be associated with their personality, more the name of the palace they occupy.

Nice reaction. And I love(d) the series as well. The apothecary diaries and Frieren are the best anime of the decade. I long for a second season!

Haven't studied history much have you? China is still this way to an extent.

Consent? From woman? From a lower class? At a palace? In the ancient China?
Such disrespectful remarks, say goodbye to ur head..
