Warm inside the house retains when in cold climate. Little cool in inside when it is hot ouside I think this wooden roof keeps the inside temperature as neutral which is very good for our health Our ancient houses are mud walls which doesnot obsorb heat or cold, it acts like insulator, and coconut leaves used for roofing which is also a good insulator and protects us from harsh climate This is the same reason we have small doors and windows and full wooden windows Wooden roof is good, but it needs hot air ventilation like chimney, otherwise all the heat emitted from the earth will circulate inside the house

It much lesser compared to the thick concrete roof with steel bars which is usually made these days. The roofs with steel have a short life as the steel starts rusting and falling apart after 30-40 years. The steel and concrete heat up the roof as well. None of that happens with this wooden roof. Madam, whether this house has been constructed with rcc columns/ pillars, rcc footings and beams with wooden roof or is this a completely load bearing structure with wooden roof? And kingly make more videos on this house with detailed walk through
If you are not in an earthquake zone, you can make it without any RCC beams and pillars because the walls are load bearing. In our case, we added some pillars and a beam to hold the structure together in the event of an earthquake
I am trying to figure out what Iqbal bhai said, wood planks bear their own weight as they are screwed with long screws. Watched the video several time but still in darkness.
Wow that’s a very attractively beautiful house. I am so glad that I got that chance to ship wood for making of this project 😊. From Dhiman Timber House, Panchkula.
Madam, I have heard and seen in some village houses that high ceilings keep the house cooler. Have you gone for a high ceiling or a low ceiling which is found in most of the modern houses these days.
Yes high ceilings keep the room cool, because they have roshandaans/ ventilators which allow the hot air to escape. We have 10 feet high walls and ventilators all around
Nice job with the wooden work there, team Ananda. Any particular reasons you went for flat wooden roof than the gable? While this looks good the gable roof has its own charm.
That was purely the architects design decision. Given our climate and needs of water harvesting/solar panel installation on the roof and overly aesthetics, he proposed flat roof would be better.
Wooden roof is expensive. You will have to check the price of wooden planks and rafters, and also the cost of carpenters labour and estimate the cost. For the rammed earth walls, the material is cheap as it's just mud, gravel and lime. But you will need to get some formwork made with wood/metal sheets and pipes etc.. and the there is labour cost. You'll have to calculate that yourself.
Hello, I want to plan a farm for my family.. however I am concerned about our children’s activities and school.. if we buy a farm farther from city, kids upbringing might hamper.. please share your experience on how you did it when you started Ananda in 2011 and your girls were younger.. Thanks!

Cost per square feet will depend on the cost of wood and workmanship in your area. But this roof is more expensive than a conventional steel and concrete roof. I will take Iqbal bhai's permission and share his details in the description section.
Which is better? Wooden Roof, Concrete flat Roof or Metal frame roof on the basis of strength, weight, water-proofing, insulation and other aspects? Would like a Structural Engineer's perspective. Also, can Ram-Earth and/or Earth-Bag walls hold a concrete flat roof?

Main problem i see with cob houses is the amount of wood one uses, specially to give it a beautiful look. Wood and cob go together. Problem one is the prohibtive cost of wood in India and Pakistan. Second is the chance of termites. Here wood and clay are a recipe for disaster. In US/ Canada the main advantage they have in sustainable living projects is that plenty of wood is available on the property which they are allowed to use. Timber is no issue. In Pakistan at least it's a major expense when constructing a house. Specially an adobe house.
