how strange that an anonymous user released their self-made game on a japanese board forum almost 20 years ago and it still being talked about and even made high quality videos about to this day, amazing work, truly.
Mental Illnesses stories done by Japanese are not praised in there, since there hasn't been much social progress about mental awareness. If you look at Hideaki Anno, he doesn't feel accomplished or positive about Evangelion, even if his works touched people's lives for the better in most cases.
This game just has a weird feel to it. The sheer EMPTINESS of it. The fact that her WHOLE LIFE meant nothing, and it never will. If this never happened, there would be no difference. In most games, there are people who care about the main character. In most games, there are people who'll be affected by the main characters death. But not this game. In this game, her life is "lived" in an apartment room, with only her own mind to make up demented worlds to pass time, until she realizes that she is bored of life. She's tired of having to be interrupted by waking up in her real boring old room, so she finally wakes herself up.
I like this, it gives a whole new way to see this game. It doesn't un-confirm any other theory, it just goes in depth on Madotsuki's psych. I really like this theory.
I always loved the thought of a melancholy moment of finding peace in death, this is such a great theory. The basic idea of Madotsuki being a hikikomori is obvious given the time period the game was made and that you can't leave her apartment while awake, but the human mind especially someone who's not in the best mental state like Mado probably is the best part of all of this. She's aware she's in a perpetual state of a lucid dream and even when she's free in her dreams she's still just as trapped as if she were awake.
Although it's a pretty common theory that the whole game is a dream, I've never seen anybody go so in-depth with it before. I find myself agreeing a lot with your interpretation. Wonderful analysis!
The longer I'm alive, the more I remember that someday I wont be alive and my existence will be a memory like many others. I always worry that something that I say or do is gonna "be incorrect" or "look stupid", but what do I really mean by that? I'd be all like "stop being annoying" and then go watch a Death Battle video or something. But how much can being myself really hurt someone? This chronic fear I have of being annoying affects every single thing that I do, and for what? Self defense? I've already BEEN annoying. In fact, I'm being annoying RIGHT NOW. Besides my copium'd "Mado didn't actually die" theories, I can also believe that she had already jumped irl and the end of the game is just her accepting her demise by reenacting it, allowing her soul to pass on.
Wow.. you really got me stuck thinking and reflecting now. Great video! Such a interesting point of view, and one I think I believe in it too. Death is such a impacting thing to think about that its acceptance can be quite a work to pass through..
R.I.P. Mado... :( I hope she's happy somewhere... :? (I know that might be silly to say for a fictional character, but I can't help it. XD By the way, I absolutely love that some people tried to make YN happier than it actually is, same for DDLC. :p There's drawings of her having an absolutely adorable smile like the true end of Blank Dream, being alive as an adult, having a skyrail or whatever to be able to meet the other YN girls, or even gaming with the other hikikomori boys Russel from End Roll and Omori from Omori and winning.
I am struggling with health anxiety, and in my case, I'm also struggling with accepting my "death" I know it's probably dumb, but I can't really change it. It's an obsession. Right now i'm having a crisis- oop But at least, this comforts me, so thanks for the theory. It makes a lot of sense given the mixed messages the game gives.
Death is inevitable, but I know that when I die, whatever I wanted to do or whatever has concerned me in life won't matter, because it wasn't meant to be. I think an acceptance of things being in control and necessary events happening is a large stepping stone to accepting every bitter thing that happens to us. Even if it hurts, even if we cry, things are as they should be, and we should always be appreciative of the things we already have, knowing they too may leave some day. But in the end everything has a purpose and, if you'll accept it in your heart, a God to believe in that already has things figured out. Once you're saved you truly just need to live life, do what's right, and when your time comes, there's no need to worry about whatever you may have "missed", where you're going is far better and it was your time to go anyway, nothing to worry about
@@MystDawgdeath is inevitable for all living things. and from the moment I understood the weakness of my flesh, it disgusted me. I craved the strength and certainty of steel.
I happen to hold a reverse-trans-humanist view on longevity; I think mortality might be something that is better than immortality. Lady in video mentioned subjective view of what one wants to be; similarly, the way people view the world and experience the world is different(phenomenology). Often, many people are more subjectively more optimistic in viewing the world, but naturally, the world is much more cruel. There are also many who are tired and prefer rest over anything else. That does not mean we should be devoid of hope, but its just better to know there's a limit to suffering as there is to joy; so the moral of the story is to live a life where you are enjoying each day, or at least try. Revel in the fact that suffering will end, and revel in the fact that you lived and can enjoy life. For the older people who lost their anchor to this world and feels overwhelmed/just waiting for death, maybe take a walk sometimes, enjoy the view and appreciate the beauty of the world. Try new things, talk to people etc.
i can't believe this doesn't have more views, it's one of the best theory's i've ever heard and makes lots of sense and kinda makes me feel better about the game; since i feel like there are most defnitely goofy elements in the world building as well as scary moments, i feel like the entire game being a metaphor for one thing never sat right with me. thank you
You managed to turn a game already about exploring dreams into a 'But it was all a dream/coma' trope. A very interesting take on Yume Nikki as a whole, though.
I'm 27 and sometimes I have anxiety when I overthink about death (my own and my beloveds), but thanks to this video I'll start acceptipg that this is the way that it is
7:30 I wouldn't say it's ok. In fact it doesn't matter how you feel about it, it happens anyway, so you may just accept it. It can be ok, or good, or bad, or horrible, or great. Your reaction to the thing happening doesn't change that it is happening to you, so you accept it and take the experience in instead of searching for solutions. There can be a peace in it, but this doesn't mean its ok.
a really great video as always!! I don’t really know much, if anything about yume nikki, but this video was still really easy to follow along with and really enjoyable. the analysis and theory are both really well done and make a lot of sense (even as someone who doesn’t actually know the game) thank you mimiyori for another lovely video
"Eckhart saw Hell too. You know what he said? He said: "The only thing that burns in Hell is the part of you that won't let go of your life; your memories, your attachments... they burn them all away." But, "they're not punishing you" he said, "they're freeing your soul". So the way he sees it, if you're frightened of dying and-and you're holding on, you'll see devils tearing your life away. But, if you've made your peace then the devils are really angels, freeing you from the earth." - Jacob's Ladder 1990
That black cat thing is genius, it makes sense as it is found nearby a ledge which we also see with the Falling Man event and the Ending, while simultaneously acting as a hint to use the Witch. It is interesting to think about the idea of finding peace within yourself. Great video!
Your voice is lovely! I adore this analysis of Yume Nikki because somehow after all these years, I never considered the concept of it. It's melancholic but also gives this relief? Knowing she finally accepts what happened and finds peace? Even if it's just a theory I really like that. Dreams have always been an ethereal experience yet on occasion that it is terrifying, it stays when you wake up. But the loneliness is always there. The entire playthrough of Yume Nikki is so unique because there is no dialogue, it's just wandering through a dream world. It's lonely. I believe that the game is intentionally made to feel that way. So I'd like to know that Madotsuki can find relief in that loneliness. To accept it and be at peace with it, despite the imperfections and pains of life. That the beauty and simple joys of life are made priceless by the fleeting nature of it. That it's all okay. I really like that. Great video!
i haven't decided what i think is the true meaning, but something i thought about is that you can jump off after collecting all of the effects. You've essentially went through your entire subconcious and there is nothing left to explore. If you were stuck in your room all day, and even your own dreams became uninteresting, then what would you do
I'm glad I watched this video. Didn't think I would actually agree with a different view on the game, in 2023. But it's like everything clicks now. Everything suddenly makes sense. The fact that Madotsuki doesn't eat, the fact that the stairs seem to magically appear there, the fact that despite Kikiyama describing it as a "warm-hearted game" the only ending available is to jump off... but even the YNDD adaptation's "good ending" seems to make more sense. Although you see Mado walk back into the world and come out of her confinement, the framing makes it look like she's entering the afterlife, you know, "walking into the light". Plus, every time the shadow gets you, or any chaser for that matter, your punishment is to either be trapped or sent back to an earlier position, thus preventing you from "moving on".
A small correction. You being the snowman and going to bed has no baring on if you go to that deeper dream. It's a random chance for any of the five beds including the one in your room (only one of the beds in the numbers world works I think) that dictates you going to that world. You don't have to have any effects equipped at all to get it work, and actually in a recent playthrough I went to sleep and then went into her bedrooom bed on my first run and got to that world. So you don't need to use the snowman at all.
The multiple beds that can lead to this location is talked about at 4:06. At 7:49 the snowman is mentioned because it’s relevant to the event that was being analyzed, Melting Madotsuki, and one of the possible ways to trigger it.
@@kerophibian "If you happen to sleep in the bed as a snowman, there's a random chance it will transport to you a staircase that leads you down into a hallway" This is the part I have issues with because the implication is that the hat and scarf effect have anything to do with your chances of going to the staircase with the hallway. I'm willing to believe this was misspoken and they simply meant "There a chance the bed will take you there and the snowman has this effect in this location" but that isn't at all how that phrasing comes across and could have been better expressed.
@@LimeJinjoEXTRA I don't really think that's a nitpick. I love the overall video, don't get me wrong but it's a pretty big factual error or at the very least poorly worded. It's fairly light criticism I feel and people are making my extremely light criticism out to be something it's not lol I mean, it's literally the reason I referred to it as a "small correction".
@@LimeJinjoEXTRA I'm sorry that your standards are so low that you think it's okay for content creators to include objectively incorrect information. Just because you don't see how it matters, it doesn't mean that it doesn't matter.
Haven't even started the video yet but that disclaimer at the beginning showed a humility and self awareness that I think a lot of online theory posters lack. Idk I just liked it
Wow! I really liked that! I like the game because I’ve had experiences like; depression, anxiety (and kinda a sad life), and this game kinda embodies that and its like other ppl can understand what that is like, and I love the music in the game, really helps give the feelings of the game!
(Someone has probably already mentioned this but...) You do not need to be a snowman for the bed to take you to the staircase, it can happen regardless of what form you are in.
really great theory, always love looking at recent uploads and ideas of this game and other people’s perspective of its narrative, i for one didnt grow up with this game, played in back in 2020 and yet its probably in my top 10 favorite video games, you make a lot of interesting points and your editor did a fantastic job with the visualization. If your an animator i applaud your little short segments during the video too. As you said in the beginning of the video not to critic your theory which I wont, its a very beautifully thought one. Heres just some stuff I found out about the game Poniko has a correlation with Uboa: Its kinda obvious she does but its likely there are the same person or another perception on Poniko as lf she’s killed and the event triggered Uboa will not be seen. However one fun fact a lot of fans may not know is that Uboa wasn’t even an event prior to version 0.10 as its not in 0.4 version and the pink sea has a completely different change (i recommend looking into the original maps or song bgms before they were pitched down and mixed its very interesting hearing stuff like number world or stairs to sky garden) As for the ending anything is up for interpretation and people see the jellyfish as a flower signifying death but a great video by Seagen Hawkes believes Kikyama but the stairs there as for people who just wanted a goal when playing the game which was collect all effects however kikiyama encourages people to keep looking and finding them so the ending could be intentional. Lastly I love your bit about mars and how it may be the most isolated area in the game never thought of it as that and that just makes me love that area so much more, I do wish you tackled mars-san or the ufos Madotsuki gets when using the cat effect (maybe shes calling out for help? And Mars-San being apmost the literal dream interpretation of madsuki aside from the hell shadow event) Who knows but great theory and cant wait to check out more of your content, you more than earned a sub
thank u! and no, i always use the normal purupururin song as the outro for my vids, but since this one was more spooky i used the 'denpa' purupururin song also from nhk, just a creepier version of the og
I think poniko is just a schoolgirl that she wishes she could be, only to get close to her and become her friend, and realize she had a different perspective of madotsuki than she had previously thought, depicting her in madotsuki's psyche as a monster that looks down upon her at best and actively berates or maybe even physically abuses her when madotsuki shows discontent
1:30 what does it remind me of omori/sunny Japan off the hospital building at the different engine of the game spoilers If you don’t know. Well it’s too late now.
I love the editing and art in this video, and the whole theory in general gives a way new perspective to the game. This video is super underrated for what it is, and I hope you get some more recognition in the future!
Where do those Yume Nikki manga panels come from? I've been looking for information on it for a while, haven't found any. Pretty sure the idea of "reality" also being a dream was in said manga, but I haven't been able to find out whether the manga is official or not
Here's the full lore behind the game, and it's actually confirmed: She's not conscious, she's still in her mother's womb, both of them are sharing the same dreams and that's why the mother could be seen in the manga saying "I've promised to give birth, and when I do...I'll finally hear your cries, your voice for the first time..and say good morning" Because the mother already met her baby (which is Madotsuki) but only in her dreams without even hearing her voice, and that's why Madotsuki can't get out of her room, She Only will get out when her mother gives birth, which means Madotsuki's apartment represensts her mother's belly. Also the video game (the red console) that could be played next to the tv, represents the baby eating his mom's left overs. That's why a red creature looking exactly like a new born could be seen eating certain stuff falling from above. And btw the mom wasn't assaulted at all she was just lustful, and all that was confirmed in the manga. Madotsuki didn't die at all, she's just unborn. And that's why tons of reproductive organs are seen throughout the game, It's the only piece of reality that Madotsuki could see. Also, Madotsuki's eyes in the game are shut, because her mother is still in early pregnancy, the unborn child had already experienced depression without even opening their Eyes throughout it's mother's dreams and memories. And btw, yall guessed it right..the Mom's name is Poniko, she's the girl with the blonde appearance. That we'll eventually meet half way through the story. That's basically the story, Madotsuki didn't die or anything like that, she's just waiting for her birth, and while doing so, she's reliving memories...
This, I think, is my favorite theory of what this game is about, and I like how you presented it. On another, what song is playing in the end card? It sounds nice.
@@mimiyori Your video made me realize the similarities between Maddie's and Jacob's journeys in their acceptance of death. Kikiyama stating the visions we see are meant to be 'comforting' ties into the Buddhist concept of a Wrathful deity, which is the embodiment of an otherwise peaceful being which takes on a fierce disposition to drive out worldly desires and severing the soul from the material world, essentially cleansing it. Whether the visions both Maddie and Jacob see are angels or devils depends on perspective. The visions necessarily have to be wrathful or threatening because that is part of the soul purification process.
Death Acceptance? :? Hmm... never heard of that before surprisingly, but not entirely unexpected. :p Oh shit, that reminds, I always wondered if Uboa was some type of youkai or something, given that Noh Face from Spirited Away and Arakune from Blazblue and so on have similar vibes, a dark shadow with a white mask, or something. :p Seriously, what's up with that? :? Sigh... if it's a youkai, I really want to know the name of it. :p
"the greatest anime youtuber" You sound like a tiny girl XD. Cute. Now, nice Yume Nikki video! T_T The Pururin outro I would like to try some day DMT or LSD. Maybe I'll experience my very own Yume Nikki. WIll dying wake me up?
Accepting death is dumb. Why? Because it doesnt need you to accept it. It will come regardless. And that discomfort is the only comfort I draw from the idea. So some rpg maker game isnt gonna really shake my foundations on that. Personafying death also I feel is the biggest cope, and I feel is a dumb way to accept death. Accept it, or kick and scream. It will come regardless. thats cool
not to be that guy, but the "main character is akshually asleep/in a coma/already dead" theories are always so lazy, they are literally aplicable to every piece of media in which something strange happens at any point in the story

@@iconofthicc6086 You know bioshock? Water and city is not a good match. Unfortunately its same for neurons and metal. lol
that video was so awesome omg
thank you !
i can't believe this doesn't have more views, it's one of the best theory's i've ever heard and makes lots of sense and kinda makes me feel better about the game; since i feel like there are most defnitely goofy elements in the world building as well as scary moments, i feel like the entire game being a metaphor for one thing never sat right with me.
thank you
You managed to turn a game already about exploring dreams into a 'But it was all a dream/coma' trope.
A very interesting take on Yume Nikki as a whole, though.
I'm 27 and sometimes I have anxiety when I overthink about death (my own and my beloveds), but thanks to this video I'll start acceptipg that this is the way that it is
the editing talent in this video essay is astounding. huge props!!!
I don’t really know much, if anything about yume nikki, but this video was still really easy to follow along with and really enjoyable. the analysis and theory are both really well done and make a lot of sense (even as someone who doesn’t actually know the game)
thank you mimiyori for another lovely video
Also the fact that that ladder appears out of nowhere after you collect all the effect proves even more your theory
really cool theory and great analysis!
Seeing Omori made me both confused and very happy
This theory literally gave me the same feeling, as an Inside a Mind theory on dhmis... Excellent job!
i haven't decided what i think is the true meaning, but something i thought about is that you can jump off after collecting all of the effects. You've essentially went through your entire subconcious and there is nothing left to explore. If you were stuck in your room all day, and even your own dreams became uninteresting, then what would you do
Ponikos room is possibly the only area that creep me out especially with that jumpscare event and i haven't played it yet
great video! really enjoyed the analysis and theory crafting, it was almost as thought-provoking as your other hit video "deku = jesus" !
I'm willing to believe this was misspoken and they simply meant "There a chance the bed will take you there and the snowman has this effect in this location" but that isn't at all how that phrasing comes across and could have been better expressed.
this is such a nitpick it really doesn't matter
@@LimeJinjoEXTRA I don't really think that's a nitpick. I love the overall video, don't get me wrong but it's a pretty big factual error or at the very least poorly worded. It's fairly light criticism I feel and people are making my extremely light criticism out to be something it's not lol
I mean, it's literally the reason I referred to it as a "small correction".
@@LimeJinjoEXTRA
I'm sorry that your standards are so low that you think it's okay for content creators to include objectively incorrect information.

New favorite theory just dropped
Oh my god I remember seeing that blue weird thing and i had so many nightmares about him when i was a kid
Haven't even started the video yet but that disclaimer at the beginning showed a humility and self awareness that I think a lot of online theory posters lack. Idk I just liked it
wow, this is a really unique and beautiful theory! well delivered and crafted, really one of a kind. :)
thank you!
Uboa being a representation of ego death is something I never considered but actually makes so much sense to me
I really like the theory!! I've seen a bit about this game and this is a really cool way of looking at it
Wow! I really liked that! I like the game because I’ve had experiences like; depression, anxiety (and kinda a sad life), and this game kinda embodies that and its like other ppl can understand what that is like, and I love the music in the game, really helps give the feelings of the game!
honestly me and my sisters theory is that madotsuki killing herself is just her thinking she can fly
Thanks for making this, I really liked your take on uboa :)
Heres just some stuff I found out about the game
Poniko has a correlation with Uboa: Its kinda obvious she does but its likely there are the same person or another perception on Poniko as lf she’s killed and the event triggered Uboa will not be seen. However one fun fact a lot of fans may not know is that Uboa wasn’t even an event prior to version 0.10 as its not in 0.4 version and the pink sea has a completely different change (i recommend looking into the original maps or song bgms before they were pitched down and mixed its very interesting hearing stuff like number world or stairs to sky garden)
As for the ending anything is up for interpretation and people see the jellyfish as a flower signifying death but a great video by Seagen Hawkes believes Kikyama but the stairs there as for people who just wanted a goal when playing the game which was collect all effects however kikiyama encourages people to keep looking and finding them so the ending could be intentional.
Lastly I love your bit about mars and how it may be the most isolated area in the game never thought of it as that and that just makes me love that area so much more, I do wish you tackled mars-san or the ufos Madotsuki gets when using the cat effect (maybe shes calling out for help? And Mars-San being apmost the literal dream interpretation of madsuki aside from the hell shadow event) Who knows but great theory and cant wait to check out more of your content, you more than earned a sub
i remember this game
great analysis!! also i love that you used purupurupururin as the song choice for the ending did u make a cover of it??
thank u! and no, i always use the normal purupururin song as the outro for my vids, but since this one was more spooky i used the 'denpa' purupururin song also from nhk, just a creepier version of the og
@@mimiyori Wait, that song at the end was just a darker Pururin song from NHK? o.O LOL, I didn't even realize that... ^^;
I think poniko is just a schoolgirl that she wishes she could be, only to get close to her and become her friend, and realize she had a different perspective of madotsuki than she had previously thought, depicting her in madotsuki's psyche as a monster that looks down upon her at best and actively berates or maybe even physically abuses her when madotsuki shows discontent
1:30 what does it remind me of omori/sunny Japan off the hospital building at the different engine of the game spoilers If you don’t know. Well it’s too late now.
how do you think goku would fare in the world of yume nikki
He would not.
very nice video, i liked the visuals and especially enjoyed the closing thoughts!
Madotsuki: *gets hit by a car*
Doctors: *trying to get her out of the coma*
Madotsuki: *gives up*

I love the editing and art in this video, and the whole theory in general gives a way new perspective to the game. This video is super underrated for what it is, and I hope you get some more recognition in the future!
This is an interesting interpretation of Yume Nikki. Thank you for sharing your thoughts
The story tho is actually amazing
This is a really high quality video for such a small channel, I hope you succeed.
6:15 so thats what happened to me after going to the denist!
Where do those Yume Nikki manga panels come from? I've been looking for information on it for a while, haven't found any. Pretty sure the idea of "reality" also being a dream was in said manga, but I haven't been able to find out whether the manga is official or not
uhh so I know it's been 10 months, but if you still can't find it, this is the official manga, it's also just called "Yume Nikki"
@@xddsher357 I had kinda given up on it lmao, thanks man
@@danielishere1012 Glad I could help :D
Made me emotional . Awesome video 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Here's the full lore behind the game, and it's actually confirmed:
She's not conscious, she's still in her mother's womb, both of them are sharing the same dreams and that's why the mother could be seen in the manga saying "I've promised to give birth, and when I do...I'll finally hear your cries, your voice for the first time..and say good morning"
Because the mother already met her baby (which is Madotsuki) but only in her dreams without even hearing her voice, and that's why Madotsuki can't get out of her room, She Only will get out when her mother gives birth, which means Madotsuki's apartment represensts her mother's belly.
But then...
There's the reboot/sequel. It seems to go in the opposite direction.
your animations and video editing skills are great!
Thank you! But my editor is actually the great one, he's very talented 😊

FINALLY, THE POINT OF THE GAME FIGURED OUT.
Someone's watched Jacob's Ladder
I actually hadn't watched Jacob's Ladder before making this video, I did watch it recently though, great movie
Great analysis! Do you mind sharing which song is playing during the endcard? Very eerie vibes!

Death Acceptance? :? Hmm... never heard of that before surprisingly, but not entirely unexpected. :p

It will come regardless. thats cool
Yume nikki made way more sense after doing dmt i tell ya hwat
not to be that guy, but the "main character is akshually asleep/in a coma/already dead" theories are always so lazy, they are literally aplicable to every piece of media in which something strange happens at any point in the story
