I thought I was being funny and tried to scan a $20 bill one night shortly after we got our first fancy pants printer with the scanner on top. A web browser opened up automatically with some gov logos and big warnings about the penalties for counterfitting. I was scared shitless......thought the cops were gonna show up at my door any minute.
On a side note..... not all printers did this. There was a time when you could photocopy both sides of a bill, tape them together and stick em in a high school vending machine. Then just hit the coin return. Not that I ever did this ....just that you could. So I heard anyway.

@13:00 Remember, a case being thrown out due to illegal search and seizure is not a failure of the justice system, it is a failure of law enforcement. These laws protect little people. More importantly, they defend your constitutional rights. I was a cop before switching over to the legal side. The amount of cases we had to throw out because of a basic failure to adhere to any level of due diligence was staggering.

This so much. Even with the current existing laws, police officers are using loopholes to harass people (generally minorities and disenfranchised people). That story about how he got off after the judge ruled it an illegal search and seizure happened to me at 16. I had 4 plants in my cupboard in a hydro set up, 2lb of dried bud, and the worst thing (in Australia) a full steel replica Desert Eagle. The one thing that saved me was that as I was only 16 I needed to either have a guardian with me while they searched, or to waive my rights to one. As we were walking upstairs to my room, the cop asked if I wanted a guardian while they searched and I looked back and just said “pffft” thinking I was edgy. They searched and found everything, I was arrested, charged, given bail, and at court 9 months later, as soon as the judge watched that video of the search, he paused it and told the police prosecutor that I had to directly answer the question. My response wasn’t enough to even say that I understood the question. Therefore, all evidence was deemed inadmissible and I walked home without the 2-4 years I was looking at lmao. They did take 19 months to return my watch though (an automatic Tag Heuer Chronograph), which they actually tried to charge me for (goods in custody reasonably being suspected of being stolen or otherwise unlawfully obtained) but that was thrown out too because I showed them the receipt, but they claimed the money was from drugs (it was, but lmao). I’m a changed man now though. Been over a decade since I been in trouble these days. Did 3 years jail over that time period, but learned my lesson in my early 20s and now on the straight and narrow. It really isn’t worth it. Get a job and EARN it. You’ll respect your money so much more!

I blame it on not having a father around to teach me the morals I needed, and being raised in a very bad area with a lot of drugs and crime where those were my only role models. I thought the cool thing to do was to sell drugs and make money. It was fun at the time, if I’m honest, but all I did was waste tens of thousands of dollars on parties and cars, and end up doing a few years in jail. It wasn’t cool at all. Cool is getting up and earning your money legitimately and being a good role model to your kids and peers. It took me a long time to realise who I actually wanted to be, and now I actively try to be the nicest friendliest person you’ll meet on any given day, no matter who I’m speaking to. It's crazy because this was really a thing in Chicago. Growing up on the west side of Chicago me and my cousin found big black plastic laundry bags of counterfeit money in my garage back in 2000. Needless to say, we went to different stores splurging, buying snacks, candy, etc. He was 10, and I was 11 at the time. My mom found out about it because I was bringing in all kinds of crap in the house that i bought.. She gave me the ass whooping of my life, and I've never done crap like that again.

Back in the ‘90s I had a few food service companies. One day we got a visit from the police because we had deposited a counterfeit $20 among the rest of our cash. Honestly, I think it was just a colour photocopy. Why staff accepted it is beyond me! So, after that, all bills had to be tested with that pen-thing. I found it amazing to think that people were still counterfeiting cash. Seemed so 1920s!

I can top that. I worked at a store in 2018 where someone took a fake $100 bill. I wasn't on shift at the time, so I didn't see it until after it had been put in that day's sealed baggie. Someone had clearly bleached a $10 bill and just printed the stuff on there. Now remember, this was *2018.* I still think about it sometimes.
The woman who accepted the bill was the one who told me NOT to say silly things like "Let's see if it's legit!" when I'd hold bills up to the light or mark them with a pen. She said she didn't want people getting upset. Kind of ironic, really.

However, after some digging, it seemed the Williams were based in Chickaloon, a half hour or so northeast of Palmer. Chickaloon's small, Palmer and the rest of the Valley have a population of probably 100k, so not small. Also, it's inland -- there are a lot of "fishing" towns here, but Chickaloon is not one of them!

This is exactly why a ton of stores don't accept 100s or even 50s now, and some places will specifically say they don't accept 100s for purchases below a certain price.
It's dumb as hell, you have to specify that you want cash in 100s from most banks and ATMs (my bank doesn't even give you a choice, you get it in 20s from the atm and that's it), so I always assume something is up if someone is using a $100 bill to pay for milk from a grocery store. Using 100s to buy appliances or bedding or stuff, sure. That stuff is expensive, it's normal. Carrying around 100s to buy a Kit-Kat and some vodka from the gas station at 2 am?? Sus.

This is a captivating narrative, and I think it has the potential to be adapted into a compelling film.
