2:27 when Ben asks "How much more New can come out of them" gets funnier every year because here it is 10 years and three grammys later and we just got The Prayer
They had most of the week to arrange it. This is the inaugural PTX Mitch Slap. This was basically the moment, 10 years ago, that I fell madly in love with Mitch Grassi :D
Yes - they finally let the secret weapon loose! This is my fav, they left it all on the line with this one. Thanks for the awesome reaction!! ETA: Shawn’s was a significant comment for Mitch, who was bullied in high school for his voice, and was also told to tone down his homosexuality for the show. Thankfully, he feels open now to be himself!
Honestly, to be told by Shawn Stockman of Boyz II Men, one of the greatest vocal groups of all time, that you have one of the most beautiful voices he's ever heard is HUGE validation, and well deserved! It takes a lot to impress someone who sang/sings regularly with Nate and Wanya Morris. Shawn also compared Avi to his former bass bandmate Mike McCary in an earlier episode, which is huge compliment too.
This performance was so emotionally charged, that I was absolutely floored when I watched it live. You are probably right Mitch may have gotten teary eyed because his whole life he's been made fun of because of his high voice. Keep in mind that he came to the show straight out of high school, skipped his graduation and everything. I voted for this group so hard when the show aired. It's crazy it's been 10 years 😭😍❤️. I love them so much still! 🙏🏾
What makes this moment even more powerful was that during their final rehearsal before the taping, they basically crashed and burned. Nothing was coming together. About halfway through the song you can see their smiles when they realize that despite their terrible rehearsal, everything was coming together and magic lit the stage on fire. The tears at the end were probably tears of surprise and relief. I also heard that Scott had lost his voice a few days before and was struggling with getting it back to full capacity, which is why his voice cracked and gave out at the end. He'd given everything in his soul to that vocal.
This may be unpopular but I love when reactors watch videos twice! They always hear something they didn't catch the first time. Thanks for this one! I recommend their song Sing if you haven't heard it.
♥ A pivotal moment for Mitch, you could tell he was so nervous and insecure. The guys had his back, though. Did you see Avi, Kevin, and Scott hug him at the end? Beautiful!
I've watched tons of reactions and no one ever mentions the fact that at some point during Mitch's solo the audience goes silent just to listen. It's so quiet in there that you can hear a mouse fart.
Excellent reaction! Mitch had a ton of anxiety/stage fright during the series. Watching him finally shine, and seeing his band mates so thrilled for him still gets me choked up. I watched the series live in real time and my roommate and I sat with our jaws dropped and stood and applauded when it was over. Still one of my top PTX performances ever.
At 8:30 when you said, “Listen to Mitch right now,” that was actually Avi and his overtone singing. Their final rehearsal went horribly as Scott was losing his voice. The fact that they came out and killed it was just incredible. Scott was definitely working for that last note.
that one sound you hear about the 4:40 time stamp is Avi doing overtone singing. there's a video of him performing only that. i had never noticed before how quiet the audience was during this performance. Great reaction
Such a great performance! It can hold its own with any cover they've done since, imo. The Mitch reveal was brilliant, and reminds me of the way he broke out in Hallelujah. So much of their genius was already present at this stage. Thanks for sharing your appreciation with us... twice! Super reaction.
The odd background tone you were attributing to Mitch was actually Avi doing his overtone vocal while doing bass too! It’s amazing and adds that little bit of spice! Great reaction!
Apparently they struggled during rehearsals to get this one right. That’s part of the reason they were so emotional at the end…they all went for it and it paid off.
Along with everything else I love about Pentationix, I love the way all of them are so happy when one if them is receiving praise. You can tell they are all so happy for Mitch, not for the group or the fact that he just propelled them into the winner circle. They are happy for him. Imagine being 19 and having some body like Shawn Stockman giving you such high praise.
Your reaction was exactly what I was expecting. I couldn't help but laugh as I sat in awe of PTX, yet again, and notice you didn't pause during the entire first run through of the song. I knew you were as sucked in as the rest of us were when we saw it live. I couldn't move, didn't want to breathe too loudly, and didn't take my eyes off the screen for fear I might miss something when they performed this live. When they finished all I could say, very quietly, was "hory sheet". My heart was pounding, my ears were ringing, and I was slightly out of breath from, literally, holding it when Mitch came in solo. My stomach was tight, and I was sweating slightly. Then I remembered I was just WATCHING what had happened!!! I couldn't imagine being in that audience. I couldn't even come close to imagining what being on that stage was like. I knew, I didn't guess, I didn't think, I didn't want, I KNEW I had just witnessed something that was going to change everything in the music world for years, maybe decades, to come. And, here we are, 11 years later, and Pentatonix is one of the most recongnizable names in music, known as THE go to band for Christmas music every year, have won 3 grammys, members have been on several TV shows, done just about every award show known to man, spoken almost everywhere someone can about music, toured the entire world several times over and had sold out shows on every continent, had themselves featured in a movie, members have been on Broadway...and music, not saying that they're directly the cause mind you, has changed so that it's become more and more vocal, people appreciate artists that can truly SING more and more, for the past decade. Groups like HomeFree and VoicePlay have sprung up and come to the forefront of music, as well. And, it all started with a little TV show, one group who won some little singing competition that a lot of people never heard of. Now you know why those of us who have been with them since the start are such loyal fans. Now you know why we feel so proud of them. For some, like myself, who are a bit older, this group are like our kids. Every time they achieve something amazing, every time they do something awe inspiring, every time they put out something that blows people away, we FEEL that. And, and, and...the absolutely amazing people that this group is, they NEVER let us forget that everything they achieve, every dream they've been able to live out, every mile they've traveled, every country they've visited, is our fault! lol. They say, and show, over and over again that what has happened to them could ONLY have happened because we believe in them, we let that happen. The fans. The Pentaholics. They show it, too, by spending a LOT of time with fans after shows. You know they're tired, wiped out, but they spend hours with fans after their shows just hanging out, making sure that as many fans as possible get a personal story they can tell about a member of the group. Simply amazing people, our group. Sorry for the long rant. I know that most of my comments aren't exactly short, but this one got away from me a bit. Lol. Excellent reaction, as always, D. Loved watching you experience this for the first time. Thank you for going on this journey, and taking us back with you.
Despite its length, or maybe because of it, I loved your comment! I just got tickets to see Pentatonix in Los Angeles in September of 2022 and I am over the moon! And BTW you're the first person I've told. Just thought you might want to know.
@@HelenWheelsUtah That is amazing!! Conga Rats, Valeri. You're going to have a wonderful time with the group and, more importantly, with the other fans in the audience with you. Make sure to take a few short videos to post onto TH-cam. Nothing too long, mind. We want to make sure you're living in the moment. The absolute best recording device you'll ever use is your own memory!
Mitch has been my favorite since out of the group since the first time I heard him. He is extraordinary. You will never hear a better a capella group then them ever in our life time. I am disabled and hurt a lot so everytime I hear them I don't feel my pain. If I had the money I would love to go see them. Thank you God for getting PTX together.
Mitch was a year behind Scott and Kirsty in School. He missed his high school graduation to be in the show. They were so amazing 🥲. They just keep hanging together and getting better. 10 years on I’m still amazed by them
I've been waiting for you to get to this one 'cause I had a feeling it would blow your mind. That they could pull that kind of performance off at the end of what had to be a very long ordeal - just amazing! Showed the promise of what was to come.
I remember watching this live when they sang it, and to this day, I still say that this performance is, hands-down, the best live performance on TV music competition show I've ever seen. Nothing else is even close.
Loved your reaction! At some point, I hope you do their performances as guests on Season 4 and the Season 5 Christmas special. The change and growth between each one is mind-boggling!
Dog Days and Video Killed the Radio Star were my 2 favorite performances and that last one won it for the group. They were good in the Sing Off but they just keep getting better and better with their song releases. We’re looking at pure unadulterated talent. Love me some PTX. Thanks for a great reaction and I loved that you p,ayec it again💕
I’ve been *waiting* for you to get to this one. This is one of the first songs I ever heard from them and it synched my love for them. The chills are real lol I *still* get them after all these years. This was my first Mitch-slap 😝 I’m really glad you enjoyed this and it’s so fun looking back. Shawn was the first Pentaholic and his love for them was real. I bet he’s so damn proud of them 😊♥️
This was simply breath taking...every other group knew that they were just waiting to hear who got second place. Your reactions have been phenomenal and I really have enjoyed watching the ptx sing off reaction with you! Thank you!
Most of these shows will have a judges pick week. The songs are picked usually after their last performance from the previous week which gives them the time to arrange.
True fact: Florence + The Machine was the group I fell for last, before I fell for PTX. :-) This is a great song, and they did it justice! Scott was losing his voice before this performance; he managed to channel his desperation into the over-the-top emotion of this song: "Happiness hit her like a train on the track ... ." The audience had heard little snips and scraps of Mitch before, but this was his first high-stakes solo: on the original, Florence Welch does this part as an unaccompanied solo, just as Mitch did it here. Near the end, when they started stalking toward the audience like the badass squad they are, I wanted to cheer! Re ages: Scott had actually turned 20 during the course of the competition - he was 19 when the original group biographies were put together. But he wasn't going to contradict the nice judge!
They were on fire that night. Amazing performance. They deserved the win. It was cool that some of the competitors were excitedly applauding for Pentatonix after that performance.
Great reaction! I'm glad you took the time to see it twice - we all did the first time we saw it. As others have commented, the buzzing tone you heard in the middle of the performance was Avi doing overtone singing, where he sings his bass note, and at the same time, another higher tone. He did it in the first Sing Off performance, Alien, a couple of times, during Mitch's and Kirstie's solos. I don't think the judges knew what it was, because they never commented on it. It's almost like they have a 6th singer. Looking forward to the last two Sing Off performances - WIthout You and Una Noche.
The producers wanted to keep Mitch out of the spotlight because of his high voice. I love the way PTX set him up to be the center of the stage on the most important song before the audience voted.
I'd been so anticipating your reaction to this! As said, that wasn't Mitch but Avi doing overtone singing - two notes at the same time. There's a clip of him doing The Lion Sleeps Tonight in overtone.
In addition to this being my favorite PTX performance on The Sing-Off, one of the things I love is that the audience members were paid to hold up signs - and most did not know who the groups were when the season started. You can tell who became fans along the way. Yours is one of the best reactions I've seen to this performance, and I enjoyed it throughly.
This is where I stop when I rewatch the series. After this performance the audience picked the winner. The rest of the performances don't count. You can see that they are exhausted, some of the fire left them. I loved this song as PTX did it. I heard the original later in a restaurant and remember asking my nephew who was messing up this song. He just laughed at me and said what I was hearing was the original. I plan on watching all the performances with uou. I love watching the series again with you. I also love Shawn's comment about losing the song. They always honor the original. This was one of the weeks they had 2 performances. The master mix was the same show as the judges choice.
Mitch was teary eyed he spent his years in high school (Missed graduation to be on this show) anyway spent most of his high school years being teased and bullied for his high voice.
OMG they are 'babies' here! LOL Adorable. They have matured wonderfully from their beginnings to now. So talented! I never saw that show, I don't think I saw it on TV or even know about it. I don't know what channel it was on back then. I love competition shows and almost always watch the beginning auditions at least until I find a particular talent that keeps me watching.
Watching you get excited over PTX's performances in this competition, reminds me of how amazed my husband and I were at this group's accomplishments week after week! It is amazing how far they have come through their journey!
This made me so, so happy…maybe even a little teary because I am still so proud of them for this performance. Thank you so much for sharing your genuine excitement for and appreciation of PTX!
I have watched a number of your vids and this one sold me on hitting the follow. The fact that you didn't want to stop the first playthrough and just hear the ear candy that was this in this performance just shows how much you are a fan are. I will say right now if you have done it already go back and listen to the swan songs from each group from season 3 (when a group gets eliminated from the show they do 1 last song on the way our the door) their was a good number of well done songs and their is 1 in particular that was hilarious and you have to watch it to understand
I love your reactions so much. You get me hyped for videos I've seen many times. So glad you enjoy PTX and it's been fun going through the journey with you.
Some reaction videos are entertaining/satisfying enough that I rewatch then from time to time. This is one of many from you that occupy the above-mentioned list.
the most amazing thing to me is that scotts voice was gone i mean totally gone during their final rehearsal for the show so they were on a wing and a prayer when they got on stage and yet he and they gave it all they had stressing out his voice but it made it sound better somehow.
This is the last performance. They return on the following seasons finale to perform I Need Your Love please react to that one as well. You won't be disappointed!
Hey bestie, would you mind making a Pentatonix reaction playlist to make them more easy to find on your channel (also because I like watching your PTX reactions while I paint)
i've always thought Shawn Stockman's voice was one of the best i've ever heard and so when he said Mitch's was one of the prettiest he'd ever heard i felt proud like a parent even though i did not discover these guys until like 2015 ish. btw i love your reactions its like seeing it for the first time again its awesome! i know this was a year ago but i am enjoying them anyway. I would like to suggest you put these reactions in a playlist. your ptx ones all together so we can start them up and get you some views while enjoying our favs and your reactions! edit: ok i checked all of your playlists and all of your videos it was a lot and could not find any ptx play list but the first video listed next to the video is the archived ptx reactions list. wtf youtube! lol
Of the groups still competing, PTX was the only one given a current hit. Avi was doing overtone singing, Google it. Did your goosebumps get goosebumps? And you looked like you were hit by a 2x4. Ever get your brains unscrambled?
They didn't show the rehearsal for this because it was the judge's choice and the producers didn't want to reveal what they'd chosen until the actual show. What you're hearing from Avi at the beginning is overtone singing ... doing two notes at once. There's a video of him out there where he performs Lion Sleeps Tonight with overtones, and explains how overtones are done.
I Love It! 😂 "F*ck It, Let's run this back one more time!" This is another banger! Please, no hate from anyone, but this is the last performance I watched repeatedly and still do. The next couple can't be topped by the favs you've already watched. The one you REALLY need to see at some point is their return performance on The sing Off Season 4 "I need your Love". It is so amazing and heart warming! th-cam.com/video/611cZlSiHh0/w-d-xo.html
It lended so well to the timbre and texture of the song, though. Of all their performances, THIS one needed that extra rasp and breaking emotion in his voice ❤. God had his hand on all aspects...judges song choice, tumultuous rehearsals allowing for extreme focus in performance, and Scott's broken voice executed perfectly in this raw and emotional song. This was orchestrated to be a perfect recipe.
2:27 when Ben asks "How much more New can come out of them" gets funnier every year because here it is 10 years and three grammys later and we just got The Prayer
Man, WHAT! Everything they come out with is innovative and nuts! Loved them from the start.
Hollywood Bowl 2022 New ending to Halleluja
They had most of the week to arrange it. This is the inaugural PTX Mitch Slap. This was basically the moment, 10 years ago, that I fell madly in love with Mitch Grassi :D
Same
Same!!!
And he’s never caused me to not love him
Yes - they finally let the secret weapon loose! This is my fav, they left it all on the line with this one. Thanks for the awesome reaction!!

Yeah they just flung themselves into this song SO HARD because they were sure they were going to go home, and they wanted to go out with a bang.

Poor Scotty was sick that day YET HE KILLED IT!! Mitch FLEW!!
The end with Avi makes me cry every time. I cannot imagine how exhausted they were after this show.
The passion in this performance is EVERYTHING. They wanted that win and it showed

This performance absolutely deserves a re-watch and another and another… This song propelled them into…”THE FUTURERRRRR!!!”
Dude, I watched this live in 2011. And I’ve seen this 100 times since then. I still get goosebumps. Every. Single. Time.
they used that transition to Mitch solo later in Hallelujah
Lol. Whey you said can we run it back one more time, I yelled out YES!
That was the end of Scott's voice, he was sick for that one
Mitch was a year behind Scott and Kirsty in School. He missed his high school graduation to be in the show. They were so amazing 🥲.

They actually kept the song intact. They didn’t change anything. This song was truly perfect for them.
The judges are done at this point. It’s up to the call-in votes.
I've been waiting for you to get to this one 'cause I had a feeling it would blow your mind. That they could pull that kind of performance off at the end of what had to be a very long ordeal - just amazing! Showed the promise of what was to come.

The origin of the Mitch slap?
I get chills every time I watch this video and I watch it a lot.
That was sick, I too got goosebumps the same time you did
Yes finally. I was waiting so much for this one
Told you your socks would blow off - absolutely loved this reaction thank you :)
Ah yes, my favorite one!
Watching you get excited over PTX's performances in this competition, reminds me of how amazed my husband and I were at this group's accomplishments week after week! It is amazing how far they have come through their journey!
This is my absolute favorite of their sing off performances
This made me so, so happy…maybe even a little teary because I am still so proud of them for this performance. Thank you so much for sharing your genuine excitement for and appreciation of PTX!
That 12th performance blew everyone away 🤯. 13 was just okay, 14 let Kirstie shine again before the winner announcement & I really enjoyed it.
My favorite performance by them from the show
I got so excited when I saw you did this one!! And I watched it twice with you!
How did I miss this 10yrs ago? Thanks fur for reacting to this. 😲😲😋😀😀
My favorite reaction, thank you. 😊
I have watched a number of your vids and this one sold me on hitting the follow. The fact that you didn't want to stop the first playthrough and just hear the ear candy that was this in this performance just shows how much you are a fan are. I will say right now if you have done it already go back and listen to the swan songs from each group from season 3 (when a group gets eliminated from the show they do 1 last song on the way our the door) their was a good number of well done songs and their is 1 in particular that was hilarious and you have to watch it to understand
at the end of mitch's solo, kevin is being the train. No matter how many times I listen to this song, it always leaves me speechless.
I love your reactions so much. You get me hyped for videos I've seen many times. So glad you enjoy PTX and it's been fun going through the journey with you.
i love your reaction so much 😭😭😭 you’re so hype and genuine and energetic :) you’re the BEST i appreciate u
love your enthusiasm my favorite song they did in the competition
I would love a followup interview with these three judges.
Some reaction videos are entertaining/satisfying enough that I rewatch then from time to time.
This is one of many from you that occupy the above-mentioned list.
I love that the other groups were giving them standing ovations, too.
Yep...I saw your goosebumps.
the most amazing thing to me is that scotts voice was gone i mean totally gone during their final rehearsal for the show so they were on a wing and a prayer when they got on stage and yet he and they gave it all they had stressing out his voice but it made it sound better somehow.
Great reaction!
At 8:30 is Avi doing overtones
Great reaction
😄 twice! Nice👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
i've always thought Shawn Stockman's voice was one of the best i've ever heard and so when he said Mitch's was one of the prettiest he'd ever heard i felt proud like a parent even though i did not discover these guys until like 2015 ish. btw i love your reactions its like seeing it for the first time again its awesome! i know this was a year ago but i am enjoying them anyway.
I would like to suggest you put these reactions in a playlist. your ptx ones all together so we can start them up and get you some views while enjoying our favs and your reactions!
edit: ok i checked all of your playlists and all of your videos it was a lot and could not find any ptx play list but the first video listed next to the video is the archived ptx reactions list. wtf youtube! lol
I have read that producers of the Sing Off tried to hold Mitch back during the series because he is so good no one else would have had chance
So good!!!
This is the moment they won, I think. Like, there was some more stuff after this, but this was it.
The only thing you missed was Avi's overtones. Wish I had watched this live.
That is the one that won them the Sing Off.
No practice footage needed with this performance. The trio did grow up together
Of the groups still competing, PTX was the only one given a current hit. Avi was doing overtone singing, Google it. Did your goosebumps get goosebumps? And you looked like you were hit by a 2x4. Ever get your brains unscrambled?
Hi! Tomorrow, new session of BZRP! =D
Scott was sick for this performance that's why his voice was breaking at the end.
Mitch missed high school graduation to be on the show
🤩 For your Al Gore Rythm 🤩
This was their peak performance. The next song was not that great. But we all know they come out winners.
The Original is a pretty damnamazing one. Check it out.
🌶🌶🇺🇸🇺🇸
Mitch was bullied in School because of his voice
