    That cover is so PAINFULLY late 90's that I just puked up whole 3-D Doritos in a puddle of Surge. I bet you could just cut out that box art and put it in a CD case, and fool someone into thinking it's a single from an Alanis Morissette wannabe.

      This controller was a PS1 version of the PC "SpaceOrb 360". The company that made this, 3DConnexion, is around today as is tech in more practical form. (I think the company had a different name until 2001, and is or was part of Logitech, but they're still around).
      3DConnexion makes the "SpaceMouse" line which is a 6 Degrees of Freedom user interface device used for 3D design/modelling/movement. It comes in a variety of forms. It also can still work as a video game controller, but I don't recommend it. The SpaceOrb was an attempt to spin off the tech into consumer video game controllers. Since Decent and this were about the only games that it made sense for, it was a hard sell.

    • @Xeo7
      @Xeo7 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Was that the controller advertised in the Clock Tower (PS1) booklet? Or was that something else?

  • @kyleolson8977
    @kyleolson8977 4 ปีที่แล้ว +29

    I don't know why they didn't just say "we made a Descent clone with a Doom style theme." Decent sold well enough. There were multiple sequels. Except that it was the 1990s, so let's use a hot babe to sell it instead.
    The problem was that we all knew that video games that had babes on the cover were not about babes, so a sexy cover would tell us nothing about the game. At least with this one, the understanding was pretty quick. Everyone saw it play for a moment and said "oh, it's Decent".

    • @ix8750
      @ix8750 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wait.... They said "oh' it's decent"? Or descent? Lol by the way badass name. The first one anyways. 😉

      I only clicked on it. Because i used to see it all the time at A used game store. It was in a box with used ps1 games, that weren't worth a lot. The Kept the better ones in a glass display counter. I didn't buy it because the screenshots in the back looked generic.

      I know he's acknowledged this very sentiment, but I never thought I would see the day. I recommended he play Space Station Silicon Valley a few years ago and he ended up making a video on it and he seemed to genuinely enjoy it, but he still held the same sentiment that, overall, N64 games just don't hold up. I have a deep affinity for the console and its early 3D graphics. It's what the Atari Jaguar was supposed to be. I know Nintendo made mistakes with the N64 and lost a lot of 3rd party support, but their 1st party games and 2nd party games from Rare were second to none in that generation.

    It might interest some of you to know that the N64 levels were quite different from the PC and PS1 versions, which the remake is based on. However, the remake also throws in a selection of the N64 maps for fun, so while it isn’t the complete Forsaken package it’s still the best value one available today.

      When I saw this on the rental shelves, I thought it was some low budget racing game or something. With how much garbage western developers pushed out back then, it was a safe bet too. I didn't get to experience playing it until like 2008, when the PC version was cheap and I could actually look up what it really was. I'm almost mad at whoever went with that cover, because it's a fantastic game in general.

    I remember playing this years ago but I like the PC original (which I also played years ago as well) and the recent Nightdive Studios Remastered versions. By the way the original version of Forsaken was going to be developed as Descent 4 and later renamed as both Project X and Condemned (even one of the music tracks in the game is also named Condemned) until due to trademark disputes it was renamed to Forsaken, and the PC version was even bundled with several graphics cards.
    It was even used as a benchmark program to test GPUs of the time as well. The announcer is voiced by Jon St. John aka the voice actor of Duke Nukem, and the soundtrack is done by The Swarm.

    I fell in love with this game while playing it on a demo PC in Sam’s Club back when it came out, naturally i had to have it so i went out and bought the n64 version. I was confused at first due to the lvls being different and the n64 version had a warmer less sterile color pallet than the PC and PS1 version but I loved that game especially for the unconventional PVP. It really filled the void between Goldeneye and PerfectDark for quality pvp content. I had just given up on Doom64 due to the lvls being to hard with the n64 controller so having a fun single player game with a quality multiplayer was a huge plus in those days.

    Weirdly this game’s box art popped up in my head a couple days ago just out of nowhere. Then I see this box art thumbnail on TH-cam and I say to myself “Holy shit SNESdrunk decided to do a video on Forsaken 64 what form of power is this?!
    I always saw this game at my local Blockbusters and Hollywood Videos when I was younger and those rental stores still let you rent N64 games yet I never knew what the hell this game was about lmao. I always just assumed it was some random FPS Mad Max like post-apocalyptic type game and the girl on the front cover was just random, non existent character in the game that is posed to represent what people in the game look like theme wise but I was way way off after seeing actual gameplay 😂😂
    That box art always stuck with me for when it came to games that have questionable cover/box arts that I saw when I was little. Definitely hit the nail on the head when you said we’d clicked the thumbnail cause we remember this box art from back then 😂😅
    It’s interesting to look more into the cover/box art of Forsaken. Apparently the girl on the front is an actress/model named Donna DeCianni and someone apparently met her at an E3 Show back in 1998 when this game out.
    Still leaves me wondering what does the front cover/box art have to do with the game though 😂😂😂 I can understand making a front cover art different than anything else on the shelves so it sticks out more and grabs the consumers’ attention such as the cover art for Phalanx on SNES but least that cover art showed a flying ship in it to not entirely confuse you on what type of game could it be 😂😂 still looking at this cover art is definitely like a trip back to the N64 days that we all miss 😭😭

    I had this underrated shooter back in the day on my 64. The multiplayer had this great level called " Pandora's Box" which had a floating sphere in the middle. The sphere also had a hallway inside that extended to another part of the level, but since the sphere was free floating in the middle of the chamber you could not see the hallway from outside. In essence, the whole level was inside the sphere, which itself was inside the level. TARDIS physics, ladies and gentlemen!
    Also, strafing via the C-buttons made dodging easier than one would think.

    as mentioned, the game is loved enough to warrant a really good remaster that looks awesome, not to mention, the game was a product of it's time, a fast paced, action heavy descent with a lot of appeal, the girl on the cover was used in a lot of ads in magazines to boost sales, and it sold well , not to mention , this was an early 3DFX title, this one coupled with INCOMING, really showed the power of those fancy 3d cards we payed 100s of dollars for , also, in case anyone reads this, try OVERLOAD , it is a recent game and pays homage to this game and descent and at the same time, doing a great job bettering the controls and the map, Forsaken was and still is a good time and can be picked as a remaster on a sale for around $5, and that is a great value.
    P.S : Drunk...i know it is a long shot, fan since ur early days, problem is, this is a hard game for u to review , but one that i loved for ages, BLAM! MACHINEHEAD....can ya give it a shot ?

    I was a big fan of Descent on PC-DOS, so I definitely appreciated Forsaken 64 for the "six degrees of freedom" on a nintendo console. It sadly didn't have the same level of polish as Descent so it never pulled me in much. But I still liked it as a concept.

    As far as I can tell, the PC version and N64 version had different Campaigns, the N64 had a starfox style branching path system where meeting certain requirements took you onto different paths and levels. The Remaster released recently is based on the PC version of the game that had different levels and different missions for the same levels.

    • @zaphero5518
      @zaphero5518 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Oh that's because they had to make an entirely new campaign for N64 to make it work and run well. Not a single level from the original pc version or the PS1 version is in here; it's all created just for this port. The remaster takes advantage of that by weaving in campaign levels from the n64 game with the original, often combining two n64 levels into 1 to match the pacing of the pc levels because the n64 levels are significantly smaller.
      The Remaster is essentially an ultimate extended cut that combines both versions of Forsaken into one (though the multiplayer bots didn't make the cut; they couldn't access the bot code that's exclusive to the n64 version).

    Because of its fast-pace, 3D movement, and versatile controls, Forsaken absolutely needs to be played with a mouse and keyboard. Granted, it's been over 20 years since I've actually played this, but I can't imagine a handheld controller doing it justice. Having played video games for the past 40 years, to this day, the online multiplayer of Forsaken remains one of my fondest gaming experiences. No other FPS that I'm aware of has achieved its level of breakneck intensity, especially after you became familiar with the maze-like level designs. It ran so damn smooth, too.

    It was pretty important in the PC world. As mentioned, it's basically a Descent clone. HOWEVER, it used hardware 3D rendering, while the Descent series was mostly software rendered - aside from a special 3DFX version. That version only played in full screen (non cockpit) mode, and I'm not sure it even had all the levels. I can imagine that it was difficult to play on a gamepad. At least for PC, you can map the controls however you like. It was a good looking game, at the computer stores. It was fun to try out, and I think the demo version gave you enough enjoyment for a good long time.

    1) The camera functions perfectly. The only thing that would make camera angles "awkward" would be an individual players inability to process what they're viewing. As comprehending a six axis environment is unfamiliar to most gamers. This is no fault of the games. In laymans; The camera functions very well, better than MANY more popular 3-D titles, you just might not be sharp enough to keep up with it.
