I used to work at the RAC in their back offices. Their computer system at the time compressed all place names down to the first four letters. Yes, you're ahead of me. Any breakdowns in Clitheroe raised eyebrows.
There is or was a dress shop across the road from the shopping centre there, as you exit the centre the sign is partly obscured by a street sign and it's 'Lady Clit hero'
Similar story to Shitterton village. The locals there banded together. Raised the money to have the name engraved on a 1.5 tonne block of Portland stone. To put off the theives.
Opie Street in Norwich was once Gropekuntelane. There used to be lots of Gropecunt Lanes (or variations thereof) around England in the Medieval period but, sadly, they've all gone now. The last record of one was from 1561.
Over 11 million views in 2023, wow. Jon, the viewers keep coming back because of the content and your unique presenting style. Best wishes for the new year.
Did you know that the weather presenter, Paul Hudson on BBC Look North is the current Mayor of Wetwang? The previous Mayor was the now deceased Richard Whiteley of Countdown fame. Wetwang has a good chip shop too.
Of course there is scope for many more episodes on this theme. Those I can think of off hand are Crapstone (Devon), Shitterton (Dorset), Pishill (Oxfordshire), Sandy Balls (Hampshire), Pratts Bottom (Kent), Fingrinhoe (Essex), Twatt (Shetland and Orkney), Titty Ho (Raunds, Northam0tonshire), Fanny Lane (Keighley, W Yorks), Grope Lane (Shrewsbury, Shropshire), Butthole Lane (Shepshed, Leicestershire) and no doubt plenty more I can't think of at the moment.
My favourite silly/offensive name is from two villages south of Stonehenge. The village of Wilsford and the village of Lake, jointly known as “Wilsford Cum Lake”. I certainly wouldn’t want to fall into that lake. 😱😂
Brilliant, you could do another hundred episodes off these and still not run out of rude place names. I bought my sister a map of rude British place names for Christmas so she could plan her own road trip 😂
Still love Titty Ho in Raunds, Northamptonshire. There is a car company called Titty Ho Motor Co, so cars proudly drive around with it stuck in the back windscreens! 😂
BRM's supercharged V16 was nuts. Then ten years later give or take, in 1966, they showed up with the H16, which was two V8 engines mashed together, with a chain system. It vibrated a lot so they put weights on it. The weights had a tenancy to fly of and blow up the entire thing. Then in the late 60s while doing the H16 shenanigans and madness, they teamed up with Rover, yes, /that/ Rover, to enter a gas powered car at Le Mans. An then not to be outdone, they won the last pre-chicane Monza race in one of the closest finishes ever, Peter Gethin won. Howden Ganley fiffth. The story goes that ater the race, Gethin had to help change the tyres on Lord Owen's car because it got a puncture while leaving Italy, as well. BRM could probably be a mini series/or long vid all on its own. EDIT: Also now I want AutoShenanigans to explain the Scunthorpe Problem, too as regards interwebs filters, too
I'd need to check but I tought he and Lord hesketh (he of Hesketh let's put a naked girl on our F1 car, fame ran in the same social circles, at least that's something I've read quite a ew places
I can't believe you went to Folkingham and missed the village of "Dyke" a few miles south on the A15 Absolutely loving the new camera shots and extra work you are putting in to the production.
Used to do roadwork management in the North East including Chester-le-Street a famous town in County Durham. One of my employees answered a call and asked "what town is that", was given the answer "Chester-le-Street" asked and answered the same again then snapped back "i asked what town, not what road".
Great stuff, I live in Northern Norway, not that far from a place called Barstad. Your videos are getting very fancy, filming your lovely Saab from another car and drone footage, thanks for all the great nerdiness, and hope 2024 sees a lot more of it.
Excellent 👌🏼 I said to Mrs wife after part 1 “I wonder if Wetwang will be mentioned” You never cease to amaze 😁 Thank you Jon and all the best for 2024
So you went to Scunthorpe but not Penistone. Or are future installments taking you through Penistone and Shitterton? (EDIT: Perhaps via a Butt Hole Road.) In any case, a fun little tour! My thanks as ever, and a Happy New Year!
@@k.r.baylor8825 Yup, it's a hamlet off one side of Bere Regis. The road through it is itself named "Shitterton", and its street sign kept getting stolen -- until they had it carved into a 1½-ton boulder set deep into the ground. The name dates back at least 1000 years, and comes from a nearby brook -- called the Shitter since it historically was where the privies drained to. You forgot the two hamlets of Twatt in Shetland and Orkney, and the hill in Cornwall called Brown Willy. Although it’s not rude, my favourite sign in England is near to Stansted Airport in Essex. It says “Bacon End Banana Depot.” I just think it’s daft and it always makes me smile.

The humber bridge has a cable dehumidification system installed on it to try and combat corrosion. The system basically injects dry air into the cables at various points along the cable to keep water out of the cables. Once took a detour to Wetwang just to get fish and chips, as marked on the map shown. We were assured by a friend it was the best fish and chips in the country. I remember the detour more than the chips themselves, but they kept us going for the rest of our journey.

When I was a student at the university of York, Wetwang was the perfect distance away for a quick drive to make sure my car kept its battery alive through the winter. I'd take my mates there, we'd buy fish & chips and then drive home. It was a vibe
Thanks for an entertaining 2023 and all the best for 2024, I'm glad that this channel is helped you out during hard times. Between 1986 and 1995, I drove around most of England and your Secrets of the Motorways bring back found memories of those trips, although it's a bit disconcerting to hear of all the changes since then, makes me feel old.
A great series, keep it UP. 😅 The underpass at Castleford (West Yorkshire) railway station is called Tickle Cock Bridge. Also, there was Butt Hole Road in Conisbrough near Doncaster. But due to resident pressure the council changed its name about five years ago. There are photos of it on the internet.
Seeing "SCOTLAND" on that map earlier made me think of a great video idea! How about "Places that are the same but really hecking far from each other". My favourite example being the tiny village of Portsmouth in West Yorkshire.. which gets some lost lorry drivers sometimes...
Blackpool and Preston both in Devon both quite close by, a long way from their Lancashire namesake... Or Blackburn in Lothian...a long way from Lancashire.
Having lived close to Folkingham in my youth I initially thought you had included it due to the way us, as teenagers, pronounced the name back in the 70s I speak from the experience of me and my mates. Shocked to say I never knew about the nuclear launch site there. Great video - have a Happy New Year.

Great video, there are quite a few Grope Lanes which used to have a name 4 letters longer. If you visit Uckfield in Sussex you will see the very narrow gap between the U and the edge of the sign, no room at all for the capital F it cries out for.
Twatt is worth a visit and a photo by the roadsign with the horizontal arrow - have to travel to Orkney though! Thanks for a great channel, Happy New Year everyone.
Thanks for another year of great content. Looking forward to more videos in 2024 and keeping Sunday as my AutoShenanigans day. Happy new year Jon and team.
I remember a number of years ago on the outskirts of Liverpool, there was a HiFi shop called Beaver HiFi and right next door... Anne Summers shop 🤣 @AutoShenanigans - you should have gone to Lowton (Greater Manchester) - Slag Lane
Slightly disappointed that we didn’t get the other Bell End and Mincing Lane. But touring around is fun. This year I went to Bavaria and enjoyed Titisee but never did get to Wank.
If you head to Cornwall there is a small village called cocks, when I was younger i would always see the signs and say it’s my brother’s favourite place
I absolutely knew you would be going to feature Wetwang in this series, after all how could you not. As an extra bit of info, Wetwang is also a place in Tolkiens "The Hobbit". Anyway Jon, thanks for the videos and have a great new year.
Oh Jon you missed a fantastic name link. Folkingham (/ˈfɒkɪŋəm/ FOK-ing-əm) is a village and civil parish in the South Kesteven district of Lincolnshire, England. It’s FOK-ing-em!! 😂
If you need a holiday, I suggest visiting North America and do a bit on some random region or highway. I think you could make a Nebraska farm route interesting.
Wicked sweet awesome as usual Thanks again Jon. Living in Australia now, your show brings me back home every episode. I remember a town near Orpington Kent called Pratts Bottom and thought there was a lower and Upper Pratts Bottom 😊but that may have been an urban myth as I can not see it on the map. Great Scunthorpe observation 😊 Happy new year and keep up the excellent work.
**EPIC** two-parter John! I bet that the behind-the-scenes/outtakes are superb. I'd love to see a making-of for these specials, I'm curious about your crew helping with the in-transit sequences, the corpsing etc. Thank you John!

Dick Trod Lane in Skinburness, Cumbria. There's Cockfield and North Bitchburn in the North East.
Brown Willy (Cornwall), Cocking (West Sussex), Scratchy Bottom (Dorset)
I have heard of a Grope Lane that used to be Grope C*** Lane, because that was where men met up with the local pros.
You nearly had the triumvirate of Scunthorpe, Wetwang and Penistone. But I suppose you need more places for the next installment!
I was wondering if/when Penistone would get a visit from John. Still theres plenty of dodgy names left for a part 3!!
Then theres Pennycomequick.
Cockfosters comes to mind
He didn’t even get to Cockermouth

The humber bridge is still the world’s longest bridge open to pedestrians.
And cyclists
Beat me to it!
Yes, I've walked across it. Never saw anyone else tho, it seems to go on forever.
pedestrians. you mean suicidists
Wonder how many takes Gene Pitney had to take on his video 24 hours from tulsa, across the Humber Bridge.

I’m still waiting for Pusey! 😂
Happy new year with or without Pusey! 😂😂😂
The videos are getting great, especially the drone shots and commentary 😁
Nice one, thanks for watching!
Excellent, interesting, and funny, as always! Thank you John
This is the best video I've ever seen about anything
Great videos, and I look forward to more in 2024
Twatt and Shitterton next please. Pisshill and Stonor near me always got a grin on the way past too.
Richard Whiteley of Countdown fame was the mayor of Wetwang until his death in 2005. Great vid, have a great 2024
Oh Jon you missed a fantastic name link. Folkingham (/ˈfɒkɪŋəm/ FOK-ing-əm) is a village and civil parish in the South Kesteven district of Lincolnshire, England.
It’s FOK-ing-em!! 😂
Another great video! Here's to the coming years content, All the very best and a Happy New Year, Thank you, 👍👊🥳.
Hi Jon another great vid you could have also gone to Cocking near Chichester or you could say ' gone Cocking 'nice one!
I went to Cocking primary school but lived 3 miles away from Cocking at ... Didling
If you need a holiday, I suggest visiting North America and do a bit on some random region or highway. I think you could make a Nebraska farm route interesting.
Thanks. V good film and excellent camera work. Every best wish for 2024
Nice one, thanks for watching! Happy New Year!
Well done Jon, thanks for all the videos. All the best to you in 2024.
Wicked sweet awesome as usual
Thanks again Jon. Living in Australia now, your show brings me back home every episode. I remember a town near Orpington Kent called Pratts Bottom and thought there was a lower and Upper Pratts Bottom 😊but that may have been an urban myth as I can not see it on the map.
Great Scunthorpe observation 😊
Happy new year and keep up the excellent work.
Again, most good video Jon. One village that always makes me smile is upperthong near Holmfirth in Yorkshire. Happy New year
Thanks for all your videos in 2023, and best wishes for 2024.
**EPIC** two-parter John!
I bet that the behind-the-scenes/outtakes are superb.
I'd love to see a making-of for these specials, I'm curious about your crew helping with the in-transit sequences, the corpsing etc.
Thank you John!
Thanks for the posts its been a blast. Happy New Year to you and Best Wishes for 2024.
There's also 'Twatt' in the Orkney Islands, along way to go though for a quick giggle
