Congrats John Perry for being first to guess the winning length of 87.5” brought in by Headwaters Fishing Team Angler Abel Platio. Thanks everyone who participated.
Be careful about buying the mesh-back PFDs with the thick lump of foam mounted high to clear the seatback. Make sure it fits you high enough to ride above the backrest in your particular yak. I bought one online that doesn't work with my yak. The thinner, full-coverage backs that are also intended for high-back seats are the safer bet.
My first time Kayaking and this Kayak held strong. th-cam.com/users/postUgkx4k5UrhC3v_Y4hIEaXLGvHcN5a5aBmZNB The water got pretty rough as a speed boat zipped by me, and the Kayak withstood it (I expected to be capsized). The Ores are very easy to put together, the pump worked beautifully. the seats are a bit hard to sit in after a while (I recommend sitting on the floor). after reading the reviews I was very scared it'd get a hole in it, the material is very strong and durable. The Air valve may need a small Phillips head screwdriver to adjust, other than that, it's well worth the money!(update)I've gone Kayaking in 3 Lakes and 2 rivers totaling about 40 miles. the kayak had two holes and they patched easily and no other problems can't wait for kayaking season this year!
Thanks for the great info. Your vids are really helpful. I just picked up a sit on top 2+1 fishing kayak for river and sea use in the UK. My NRS Chinook pfd's are in the mail. Keep up the good work man 👍
03:23 Does the Stohlquist Keeper vest ever get in the way of the paddle when kayaking? I can't tell if I'll hit the vest with my paddle, or hit the vest with the inside of my own arm, or push the vest up against the coaming on a kayak. Can you do an in depth review of the Keeper specifically?
For those days when you need more gear, I am looking for a pfd that will comfortably ride high so I can get my fishing vest around it. These look to have good potential! Thank you for reviewing!
very nice... glad you were talking about PFDs that do not inflate. The first one looked good. I personally do not trust those. I ended up doing a kayak safety video after a situation on the water.
Fantastic perspectives on several different PFD’s even these several years later. I was dead-set on a NRS Chinook but got to my local shop and tried on several different vests for fit/comfort and ended up with Stohlquist instead for me and kids (brought them along too). Wife went different NRS. Once again learned the lesson of just because it looks great doesn’t mean it will feel great once tried on. But the choices of which to try/look at were definitely brought about from the info in this video and the friendly folks at our local shop. Looking forward to going through more gear reviews from Dan and crew! Hope to see more “kayak continuing education” videos in 2021! Dan’s level, honest and down-to-earth perspectives are sincerely appreciated.
Excellent review, thanks for that. The side-by-side comparisons are exactly what I was looking for. You need to include your website and location in your video though, I wanna come shop!
Always enjoyable to watch your channel really good content. Really like the NRS only thing stopping me from going out on my kayak. I don't think I will ever take the chance and go out without a pfd. Hopefully soon I can pick it up have a good day and stay safe Jimmy from Massachusetts
I'd love to see how you carry your stuff in the pfd. I tuck the small waterproof camera inside between the pfd and my chest. The floating VHF radios are bigger than the older radios and most pfd's have smaller pockets so I don't have a good answer for this. Chapstick , a granola bar, and nail clippers round out what I always take and the little pockets work great for this. Where do you carry your stuff, especially the vhf?
Thanks again! Wish your store were closer! What kayaking life jacket do you recommend that would be under $100? I’ve seen several on Amazon, but want to make sure that would be worth it. I’m a beginner and would not be fishing.
Love your videos. Helped me select a kayak! Having trouble with PFD's. I'm not a huge guy (6ft 225) but I unfortunately have a belly. Kayak PFD's from Dick's seem to ride very high. One's without a belt would probably cover my face if I fell into the water. I dont need a fishing style, but watched this assuming it would focus on larger men. Any ideas when your only options are Dicks or online ordering?
Your opinion which is best for pedal kayak? I’m 5’11” and weigh 210. Have an Oldtown topwater PDL 120. Need to see what pfd would work best. Unfortunately there isn’t a place near me to try one on
Which pfd works best with high backed fishing kayak seats? Most of the ones you showed on this video have floatation high on the back of the pfd which would probably not fit well on the high backed seats. What would you recommend. Thank you.
What do you recommend for women who fish? My wife and I kayak fish together, but we've had a really tough time finding a true fishing PFD for her. She really likes my Chinook for its fishing attributes, but ultimately settled on comfort over fishability.
Richard Peebles the new KOkatat cane out with a woman’s model!!! It’s same as men’s just with cups. Incredibly comfy. It’s the gray and blue colors on the left side of screen.
NorCal OutDoor have you ever been in the water with one? I ask because I’ve thought hundreds of people how to perform open water rescues and I have not found that to be true. They work just the same as any other type three coast guard approved kayaking PFD.
@@HeadwatersKayak Yes, I felt from the kayak twice with different PFD. One with the cheap PFD that has the more floating located surrounding and at the lower bottom and it kept my head and neck above the water and I like it. The second one is Stohlquist Fisherman with the thick floating in the Front and the high back floating . With this PFD, my neck sunk and my mouth touch the water. I have the hold on with my kayak so I do not drink the water. Test it in the vertical position, you will see it the different. If the Floating on the shoulder, how it keeps the body/neck/heat above water.
Chris Amend the new Kokatat is an awesome option for ladies. You can see some of the girlier colors behind me to the left. They actually make a ladies only fishing vest! It’s gray and powder blue.
Headwaters Kayak thanks for the reply back. What is the name of the Kokatat i am looking to get my wife a more comfortable pfd.Dont know why i haven’t subscribed sooner. Seen you on Greg Blanchard videos and enjoyed the demos!

I’d love to see you guys host a gal covering PDFs for ladies!!!
Love your videos. I got a Crescent Lite Tackle because of you and now I'm back to trust you on PFDs. Thank you!

Great review thanks, I believe the green fishing pfd is the same model used by Yak Motley 👍

Nice video Dan. I was just admiring the new PFDs when I was in last. I need a new PFD badly!!!
Brittany Pudwell did you see the new ladies fishing vest from KoKatat? It’s bad ass
Thanks for the review..
Can you update your list of best kayak pfd's? I noticed the Keeper is not available anymore.
79.7 bass tournament, good luck gentlemen.

Which is recommended for the surf when deploying bait in a kayak
96” and I’ll drive to come pick it up from you
What would be your top PFD picks for a beginner recreation kayaker?
Stohlquist trekker
@@HeadwatersKayak Thank you! would you recommend the same one for my wife that is 5ft tall?

So glad you asked this question because I’ve had the same problem!

82.4" My birth year for the win!, there's a few 82" already so editing to 82.4".
High position floating on the back is not good because it locate on the shoulder. When you fall into the water, you head will sink.
