I live 2 min from the spot you were fishing. Really enjoyed this video, gave me some ideas on what to use out here other than rooster tails. Thanks man
NE Tn is blessed with so many great trout waters. Good to see ya in my neck of the woods. I just got back from fishing Paint Creek for 2 hours ..7am to 9am. Caught 5 rainbows and hooked a total of 9. Used a silver spoon, gold Rapala and a rainbow color spinner. We must fish with only one hook, artificial and no barb. I lose a lot of fish right up near the bank but enjoy the battle anyway. You should hook up with some of the guys on youtube in this area. One is Bass and Beer who is an awesome fisherman and a good guy too despite his yt name. Never saw him drink a beer lol....
I used to have a tiny Rebel grasshopper crankbait in chartreuse and red it was one of my favorite little lures. I never found anything that wouldn't hit it. I had it for years. Boy I hated when I lost it. And I've never been able to find another one
Lol that's crazy I've seen so many people from our area on here. I'm from Roan Mountain. I couldn't tell for sure but it looked like he was close to the Black Bottom part of the river lol.
He’s down below McDonald’s in Elizabethton, that’s the new concrete bridge in the background. I never thought that was good fishing in that area of Watauga, I’m gonna have to pick me up a Rebel Minnow lol
@@Deatheater91 Oh ok, is that where the old green metal bridge used to be then? It's been a little while since I've been through there. I moved from Roan Mountain to Ooltewah, TN a little over a year ago and honestly haven't been back yet. I agree, that Rebel Minnow was working well lol. Those looked like some big trout he seen a couple of times. I fished the Watauga in several different places over time, and had some luck. But overall I always had better luck fishing over on the South Holston around Bluff City. Idk why, the few times I went to S. Holston I always got lucky. Nice to hear from someone back home lol, I found this guy on here several months ago just because I looked for some videos about people fishing the creek I live next to down here lol.
Samuel, we live in Chuckey and I have been up to S Holston and Wilbur Dam area but never fished. I have walked around at the Weir Dams and out on that island across the bridge, sorry I can't remember the name of island. I love to trout fish both spinner and fly but that area on the backside of the island looks like it should be loaded with bream and small mouths. I actually loaded up my equipment and collapsible wagon on Tuesday to fish that area. I left my GPS at home and couldn't find the place and too proud to stop and ask, lol. Wondering if you have or know of anyone who has fished that backside for bream and smallmouths or is it mainly trout in the area?
@@undergroundchuckeytennesse2526 In that part of the Watauga River near Elizabethton it is mostly trout, the water is quite cool. If were to go fishing on down the river near Johnson City you probably will catch some smallmouth. Nice ,just not quite the same as a cold rock bottom stream / river. Still fun seeing you catch some trout. Try "Mepps Trouter Kit" #1's or #0's Aglia spinners and see how they work. Tom DB, FL.
That Rebel Trackdown was a perfect choice. I've been fishing for trout in CT for many years. 3 types of lures that work best are spoons, inline spinners, and minnow crankbaits no bigger than 3". The Rapala Flat Rap, Husky Jerk, and X-Rap in colors that imitate small trout, small minnows, and small perch work best for me. The retrieve that works the best with the minnow crankbaits is steady retrieve with a jerk or twitch every full second.

You are obviously a gifted fisherman. Have you ever considered putting a waterproof bag in a backpack and bringing those fish home, cleaning them and blessing some of the families in your church who have kids to feed?
The reproduce naturally I believe in that part. A smaller river called the Doe River starts in the town I'm from, which runs into the Watauga in Elizabethton, TN. They stock rainbow trout up there every year before the kids fishing tournament, but they can reproduce there as well. Rainbow and Brown trout aren't native here though, they were brought to our rivers sometime in the 19th century from Europe. The only trout native to the region is brook or speckled trout, and they stay in the tiny streams that are way up in the mountains.
Conditions in tailwater trout streams favor the brown trout over the rainbows when it comes to spawning. The browns spawn in the fall, so they have either started their run right now, or are close to it. Since the river is usually lower during the fall months, more eggs survive to hatch and grow into catchable sized fish. I am pretty sure the SoHo has a self sustaining brown trout population, and I don't see why the Watauga couldn't be the same. Rainbows, on the other hand, are spring spawners, so higher water levels during that time of year greatly hinder natural reproduction. Some successful spawning takes place, but not enough to support the fishery without frequent stocking. It doesn't help that freshly stocked trout are just plain stupid, so they tend to get caught and eaten within days of being thrown in the river.
@@Forgive7x70times I believe that the habitat and conditions in Taneycomo keep natural spawning to a minimum. The lake starts virtually at the base of Table Rock Dam, so there are not many places where trout could spawn in conditions that would allow the eggs to survive.
Oh wow, that’s the first time I had ever heard of it. I almost didn’t fish there but they said it was full of trout. I later looked up some videos and saw how big there is in there
