What happens to the metal when it begins to oxidize? It doesn’t just turn right into rust right? There’s other metals in it, that are stronger than just iron.. Won’t they oxidize in different stages and maybe different colors?

As Nickle / Iron weathers and oxidizes, it transforms into different phases of metal including Kamacite, Ni-rich, Schreibersite, Taenite for example. Mike Kelly is better to answer this question. (I am on the edge here.)
