On the standalone subject, I tried Cyberpunk with Luke Ross mod. RTX 4090 and quest 3 = mind blown. Probably the experience we all picture in our minds when we think of AAA VR, too bad you dont get 6 DOF with the mod, but still a great experience with a gaming controller.
I haven't tried any of those 2D to 3DOF mods. SOMA would be number one on my list, but I just don't wanna deal with the jank, so I've always avoided it.
3rd Loving the Q3. The lenses and extra sharpness is a nice upgrade. When the extra power starts being used it'll be awesome. I also think its the most comfortable stock Quest of the 3 regular models despite the whining. To claim its "unusable" is hysterical.
I switched from soft light to cold light bulbs and passthrough and hand tracking improved. I can read my phone now; not perfect but usable. I can't wait for new facial interfaces.. hate the stock one and feels rough and stiff. Replaced the strap with the elite with battery and it is much better.
Great video, bro! I am enjoying your content more and more every video. Your brutal honesty, and the way you express it reminds me of how I used to love ericforpresident videos. Keep up the great work.
@@grayfoxdiekilla1934 yeah, having owned both, the image is substantially crisper in the Quest 3. It's a better experience. But that doesn't mean the Pro is bad at all. I just know I watched a movie last night in Bigscreen, and for the first time it actually looked 1080p.
I had the same exact experience with the passthrough that you had, I thought perhaps my headset was just defective or something. In all it was somewhat disappointing. Ultimately I believe that this Meta Quest 3 VR headset was extremely over-hyped. Oh well, live and learn as they say. Great review by the way, thumbs up!
Wifi 6e made the Quest 3 upgrade worth it alone. 5ghz wifi traffic at my home was bottlenecking my performance. Now i'm running HL Alyx on ultra with 90fps no dips. All my pcvr games are maxed out at a solid 90fps. It's better than the link cable, because of the optimization features Virtual Desktop has. With the better lenses, fov, audio, and haptics, it feels next level.
@@bringhurstvr cool, I didn't get to that video yet... Going to watch it next. Keep the awesome videos coming. I really like using the Quest 3 with the Pro Controllers. I only run my Quest as a native device.
@@-RedAfro and I only use PCVR. A lot of games will perform better on standalone, without the hiccups of Virtual Desktop. But I love having everything in my steam library. And what's $60 today will be $5 tomorrow.
A lot of complaints on binocular vision being a deal breaker. You have not mentioned this in your video. It's a deal breaker for me and I'm sending mine back.
Well, yeah, I've seen some people comment on it, and they attribute it to the displays being tilted. Honestly, I've noticed it, but it's been a thing for me since the Quest Pro. I have to keep my IPD at 63, and there's always a little overlap. But while I can see it when I look for it, it's completely benign when I'm in a game. Not a deal breaker for me.
After watching a bunch of videos and reading quite a bit I came away with many of the same conclusions you did (I'll be getting the Quest 3 in the next couple weeks) and realized PCVR is likely far and away what will keep me coming back for more once I grow tired of much of the mediocre stuff through quest. I've never been much of a PC gamer especially over the last 5+ years so my current computer is far from great but do you think it would at least be solid enough to get my feet wet for now and upgrade later? here's my specs.. I don't really have any exact "limits" but if I were to just upgrade the video card in the $3-500 range would I be able to play Alyx with at least decent settings you think? If not, what would you recommend? Windows 11 AMD Ryzen 2700 Radeon RX 580 series 32GB (2 x 16GB) DDR4 3200 Over WiFi 6, 1GB speed internet
Yeah. The RX 580 is on par with the GTX 1080 (I'm more familiar with Nvidia), so it'll give you Alyx, but you'll have to crank the settings down to medium or low.
That's a lot better than I was expecting tbh so I'll happily take it even on low settings and eventually do an upgrade if I really start getting into it which I'm hoping I will. Appreciate the quick reply and making the best video on Quest I've seen thus far!

I noticed even the RTX 2080 Ti seems to be in the low $300's and that was well over $1k I believe last time I looked. I wont keep taking your time so just one final question if you don't mind? I have the 2060 saved but would jumping up to say the mentioned 2080 (or something in that range) be worth twice the cost as far as jump in performance for PCVR goes in your opinion? Or would I be better off just grabbing a 2060 soon and possibly doing a full computer upgrade sometime next year?
@@hype88 I bought a 3070ti for $1200 a couple years ago. It was wild back then. They will be turned off by it because of the crao comfort! Makes me mad 😠. Then you go to purchase a new headstrap and there aren't very many options but Meta's way over priced straps. It's disappointing that 3rd party sellers weren't prepaired for launch. So much money to be had. Thanks for the video, it made me feel better someone else validating my frustrations.
Yeah, it's all pretty rough. I've got a mountain of head straps, gunstocks and headphone solutions coming, so these convenience/comfort mods are about to level up.
Overall package, I've found the Quest 3 to be a great purchase. The only weird thing is the lack of any launch game. Theres plenty of games getting updates, and If you're new to the ecosystem theres a big library of great games to play. Asgards Wrath 2 should have been a launch title, I'm surprised we have to wait that long to play a bundled game with the headset :P Luckily theres Dungeons Of Eternity, which plays and looks great on quest 3 and 2. Question, does that dock also top up the elite battery strap aswell as the headset ? I got almost the same config as you, but i havent pulled the trigger on the dock yet.
very good and accurate first impression. every issue I seem to have you've covered. I could vouch for the Kuejct head strap. it feels as good as the bobovr I had for the quest 2. same material. I'm still waiting for the silicon facial interface from meta but I'm sure it'll be better than the stock. most of the other stuff like hand tracking, I'm waiting for updates, or a hardware option at least to make using think like bows in some games usable.
I have the same issue with the screens, although mg phone is usually okay, my desktop display is completely unuseable unless I'm an inch away from it. Its because of the amount of light coming off my 38" display vs my phone screen. I hope they rework the auto exposure to work better on screens, or maybe use AI to detect when Im looking at a screen, which shouldn't be that hard seeing as its a bright rectangle of light. Even in full, window open daylight, my pass-though isn't that great. Small text is readable, so I don't think its defective, its just VERY grainy all the time and the dynamic range is terrible, its like cheap dashcam quality video. In fact, dashcams might actually be a little better. Its fine though, its in its early stages, these are 4mp cameras after all, and its 100% functional which is the most important. I can walk around and do quick things with my headset on, which is awesome and incredibly convenient. The quality I'll improve as we see more competition in the MR space. Overall I'm very happy.
I could neardly afford a Quest 3 before Christmas but Amazon, for some reason, set the import fee for the 128GB model to double the import fee of the 512GB model, so although the 128GB model is cheaper, it cost more than the 512GB once they added import and shipping fees at check out. I contacted Amazon and they simply did nothing about it. The 512GB was out of my budget completely so thanks Amazon for ruining my Christmas!!! 😢
Quest 2 controller haptics and tracking is better than quest 3. I also believe the headset should come with a microfiber to clean the lenses. Total cheap out.
Well. I won't be playing much of those at all. I think for the increased power, better display, and the new lenses very nearly worth it. But so long as they keep cheaping out on the headstrap and audio, it'll always be over priced, regardless the number they arrive at.
I don't see the value here AT ALL. There aren't enough compelling experiences to justify spending more than 400 dollars on a headset...ANY headset. 300 dollars was JUST at the price point that I would buy a VR headset and what I got was right on the money. I think the Quest 3 needed some more work before being released to the public. The slanted displays cause terrible aliasing and its hard to imagine how they didn't think of that. The battery life is awfull, half that of the quest 2 in practical everyday use, and there have been instances of the headset overheating and dying for hours when using airlink. The comfort is terrible and the headset is the same weight as the Q2, they made no effort to fix that. There's a shortage of third party head straps which you NEED to use these headsets. To top it all off, every time Meta puts out an update, their OS gets worse and worse to the point where I don't even put on the headset anymore because I dont want to deal with the menu. The idiots over at Meta don't deserve their jobs. But even if they DID fix all the problems with it, it still wouldn't be worth 500 or 650 dollars to me.
