This happened to me 3 times when I rented a basement suite 🤦 My entire suite was flooded in sewage. Everything I owned had to be thrown away. Slum-lords didn't change any of the flooring, just poorly carpet cleaned. Turns out tree roots were blocking the main drainage pipes. The city had to come and dig up the whole street to fix it. I saved my money and moved as fast as I could.
For anyone in the UK watching this in 2023, the drains on those properties are all linked together (shared drain) and from 2011 in the UK they became the responsibility of water companies, so if there was a blockage the water company would have to sort it out with no charge to the property owner. If you have problems with drains always get the water company out first before paying a private contractor, the water company will advise if the drains are private or shared, and you could be saving yourself a lot of money. This video is older than 2011.
It would be impossible to change how the sewage system is today in old housing estates but newer estates have better sewage systems same as the U.S not all your sewage systems are the same
