Same here. While a circular cam might generate a sine wave, this shape generates more of a square wave.
@@_rlb It can run in reverse because it has a transmission that allows it to do so. The engine itself does not rotate in the opposite direction.
They use this exact same triangle in rotary engines.

They wouldn't be as effective unfortunately, because the centre of mass of the wheel would keep going up and down
Also wheels attach by their center, and while the triangle's diameter might be equal everywhere it's radius sure as hell ain't

I believe the mechanism at 3:00 was used in some film projectors as it could move the film frame and activate shutters all off of one spinning shaft
