Veryt cool. Never thought of the roleaux triangle as something to achieve back and forth motion with a dead stop on either end.
A Mazda RX-7 can go backwards and forwards. But I get your point. Me neither :)
Now it's up to you to make something with a reuleaux triangle, Raspberry Pi, pantorouter and wood gears.
Matthias, I recommend checking out mechanism 135 from “507 Mechanical Movements”. This is right up your alley.

Same here. While a circular cam might generate a sine wave, this shape generates more of a square wave.
@@_rlb It can run in reverse because it has a transmission that allows it to do so. The engine itself does not rotate in the opposite direction.

When someone reinvents the wheel and uses this triangle as wheels for their bike they'll be the coolest person on the block
They wouldn't be as effective unfortunately, because the centre of mass of the wheel would keep going up and down
Also wheels attach by their center, and while the triangle's diameter might be equal everywhere it's radius sure as hell ain't
@@irwinblair5494 somebody already made this though, with suspensions made to compensate for the varying radius. It's not an effective vehicle =P
It's also how a rotary engine works, like you find in many Mazda cars.

You sir, are amazing! I have never seen such a perfect Reuleaux triangle made out of Lego until now!
Those lego pieces with three shafts mounted at equal distance from each other are really useful. They can be used to make any perfectly triangular assembly.
Lego should make a collection called ‘Lego education’ or ‘Lego science’ and hire you to design the creations. I think stuff like this would definitely get kids into science!

This is amazing and has really sparked my imagination as to what uses these mechanisms could be put to. Animated dioramas for a start. Who would have thought this was even possible from the limited/finite number and size of Lego pieces!
