3 years later, I just purchased an M1 Mac mini 8GB/256GB (I do use a 1TB NVMe enclosure as my boot drive), and I have zero issues running InDesign, Illustrator, Excel, approx 20 Safari tabs, and various other apps simultaneously. For some people it is, the problem is that getting for example a P3 4K monitor is not cheap, so, If you want a Mac mini with hardware similar to the iMac one, it will be maybe near as expensive.
It is not "a lot cheaper". The mac mini is just the cpu box, it does nothing until you spend a whole lot more money. How much more depends on just how much you are prepared to give up. After you add everything missing to the Mac mini, it is only marginally cheaper, or in fact much more expensive, whilst still inferior. I've done the costings and the Mac mini will only save you US$70 or cost you $391 more despite having an inferior substitute display.

that's not true, I bought a 34inch 4k monitor for under 200 with my mac mini. It's larger, runs great, and I have no issues. I have always hated all-in-ones for 3 reasons. One, anything fails, it either hard to replace or have to get an external device. 2. Having the other devices, it's easy to replace if they fail. 3. @@ceasar12c The problem is that monitor may be 4k, but its not the same. The color accuracy is the real seller of the iMacs display. I think the iMac is an incredible professional machine, for those who don’t need to spend $5k to achieve their goals.
I would get an iMac if the display went beyond 60 Hz and it supported gaming (eg warzone). For now I’m getting a Mac mini for studying/productivity (to work with my iPad Pro) and I can switch my monitor to my pc when I want to play games.
I actually have a mac mini spec with the 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD. I am selling it to get the iMac because of the 4.5K display, built in speakers, mic and camera and I am making a trade off by accepting the base 256GB storage and 8GB RAM. I don't do a lot of heavy multi tasking to consider the RAM and then hard drive space is so cheap to add later and I have the 4 ports on the back of the iMac. I can easily expand storage.
I was recently thinking about the same question. I'm currently using a 4 years old macbook pro. As solid as it is, it is starting to show degradation in battery and other stuff. I really want a desk top set up for my needs. And I prefer using macos systems for me daily use. Eventually I think Mac mini might be a better fit for me.
Reckless, I was in the same boat as you, except my 2017 MacBook Pro just up and died (it had been having battery issues, then it stopped charging, and then it shut off and never came back on). I’ve been using a PC to tide me over and it’s annoying me beyond measure after being in the Apple ecosystem for 10+ years. After watching a bunch of Sagi’s videos, I decided on the M1 Mac Mini. It should arrive on Monday, so I’d be more than happy to tell you what I think of it once I get it up and running.
We also need to see if they fixed the problems the Mac Mini had like slow external storage speeds and bluetooth issues. This will be critical to the iMac's success because if those problems were not fixed completely, it will negatively impact sales.
@@TechGearTalk Yeah but $300 for 1TB is not good value. Most reviews show SSDs getting about 330 MB/s for the 1 TB size which is way lower than you should expect. I ended up using the OWC Envoy Express and adding my own NVME drive to get about 1300 MB/s off the Thunderbolt port.
I have a late 2013 27” iMac which is now getting too slow to do anything useful without the beach appearing. It’s also not compatible with Big Sur. The monitor is perfectly adequate for my needs. So I’m currently struggling to reach a decision about what to buy for the very reasons you describe. I know the configuration of the Mac I’m after, if I go with the mini, I’ve got the everything but the monitor decided. I think I’m going to get the BenQ SW240, 24”, 100% sRGB, 95% AdobeRGB, 1920x1200 resolution. But I’m waiting to see the 24” iMac screen before I finally decide.
The very important point for make the right choice is the monitor. I mean what external monitor is comparable with iMac 24? Keyboard, mouse, webcam, has not really important from my point of view. How much I need to spend to buy a display for Mac mini, in order to have same quality level of IMac 24? Asus, LG has good display for 300/400 € it worth ?
I was thinking about a Mac Mini, but after figuring out monitors and keyboards, mice, trackpads, I just wanted to go with the iMac for convenience. Ordered one in blue.
If you already have a monitor and accesories or want to choose your own accessories, you should get the mini. But the imac is the best value for money and convenience. I tried to find a comparable monitor and accessories and pair them with the mini but the total cost and quality just could not match the imac apart from of course the magic mouse. Then there is the convenience. I am too lazy to go and pick all the accessories to make my computer work. I just want to buy it and start working.
Hey there... first time finding your videos, and I am contemplating this exact thing. Do you have any videos on monitors to go with the Mac mini? I’m almost leaning towards the Mac mini because I’m so aggravated with Apple that they don’t have a larger display. I originally had a 30 inch, then I went to the 27 inch iMac and I do not want to lose 3 inches of real estate! Thanks!
personally i'll go for the imac. even tho buying all the accessories seperately isn't an issue for me, i think the imac is GREAT value for the price (might be the first time ive said that about apple lol) why do i think that? well, i tried mix'n'matching windows pc parts to make a custom pc that has the same performance and features as the imac and it came out to around 2k dollars. 4K display, core i7 11700K, nvidia 1650 and some accessories like camera, microphone, keyboard and mouse. even without the accessories, it came at around 1k dollars (still more than the mac mini) maybe i went a bit overboard, idk really but i think i did a decent job matching the performance. i already have a monitor, speaker, keyboard, mouse, camera so the logical option would be to go for the mac mini but whilst at it i decided it might be a good idea to upgrade everything rather than just the computer itself (21.5" 1080p display, the cheapest logitech keyboard and mouse i could find at the local computer store, and speakers that are decent enough). BUT, nothing will be wasted, i will be giving all those things i mentioned to my younger brother (he's like 8, he doesn't need more than a 1080p display and decent speakers)
The entry level iMac lacks a second fan. No cooling for the processor side on the iMac. Thus it will run hotter, and the single fans spin more often than the next grade up. This has been coming up in reviews as of late. I wonder just how much you can push it when doing photo editing ( not video ) before it heats up and the fan goes to max, followed by throttling. Oh boy, yet another thing to think about. When going base, the Mac Mini could be a better choice, but then again you miss out on the wonderful monitor, so ??? Not needing a camera -- I have an iPad and iPhone for FaceTime, if need be. If you value the monitor at $500, and a camera at $100, then the Mac Mini and the iMac 2nd level are basically equals, cost wise. The advantage of the Mini is that I could get a Logitech Solar keyboard with the 10K, and the M510 mouse, which I am thinking is better in use ( let me know the error of my ways, if the magic mouse is better ) and a cool little HomePod mini for sound. Should one item fail, the whole PC doesn't have to go in for repair or replacement, with the Mini. My only fear is that the monitor will not work as well, especially for fonts, as scaling with the iMac still renders fonts just fine. The true colors are a plus as well. I doubt I would use the True Tone option, if it works like my phone = yellowish whites in True Tone :( In regard to the singular fan. I do not edit videos, and use more basic photo editors, so I am thinking the thermal issues might not be a concern in the base model. There are other considerations however, such as do I need Ethernet or not? Lots to think over.
How good do you think the iMac display will be for photo editing let’s say compared to something like the BenQ SW321C that you’ve reviewed? Of course know the BenQ will be more accurate, but will it be by a lot?
The iMac is so lite, the base doesn't hold it down. It moves around a lot. And I don't like the new big WHITE bezel. Now, 24 is too small - so the 27's will be even more expensive. But the mini upgrades come out then too - and the $699 price will not hold as the M1 Pro will be the default chip set.
Awesome video! Thanks for the knowledge! Quick question. I have a MacBook Air as well as a monitor, Bluetooth keyboard and apple trackpad. If I get the Mac mini, will I be able to use both my MacBook air and existing monitor together with the Mac mini for a 2 screen display?
My primary use would be photo editing (LR and Photoshop). I do like the all in one iMac machine but I'm curious about two things: 1) can the screen be calibrated (and I don't like the automatic adjustment in the iMac) and 2) I fear that the 8GB memory will be insufficient? So maybe I'm better of with the Mac Mini 16GB?
iMac, definitely. I bought the Mac mini and I love it but I already had monitors and Apple keyboard and Apple trackpad, yet is not perfect a the iMac is still more portable
Is it a good idea to get a Macbook M1 and use it as a desktop machine, like 24/7 usage? I like the portability of a laptop for some situations ( 2 or 3 times per month ) and still I need a powerful desktop machine. I don't know if those 2 or 3 times per month worth it to invest on a laptop or its better to invest on a mac mini with more powerful specs.
Does the current mini no longer meet your needs? If it still works well for what you need - do not upgrade. If you need more, the new Mini is nice. Hope that helps. Thank you for being part of the channel!
I have a room that is green. When ever calibrate my Benq PD 3200U. The images usually come out tinted towards greenish when I view it in my phone screen. Is there a workaround?
Firstly I love your videos on apple m1 products. Its my first ever apple product , which I am planning to buy. Can I go with m1 macbook air or m1 I mac ? I do not have any accessories to set or else I would have gone for m1 mac mini. Please suggest me?

As much as I wanted to give m1 a try. After doing spreadsheets of both new, used and refurbished iMacs/Mac mini, they are way overpriced. Decided to build a micro itx build that has more RAM,storage and was capable of doing both video editing and 3D modeling. Not to mention I still got a 4k monitor included too within the price range of the most expensive iMac.
Mannnnn! I wanted this video to last longer... That's a good sign 😂. Well, you always make us think. There is one thing though not very clear for me yet. You know I got the iMac (27" 5K monitor), the one from last year and it works fine so far, just the other day I was editing a video and it was a long video with many adjustment layers and titles and effects etc and I saw the rainbow ball for the first time, which actually scared me a bit, cause the video was in 4K (not 6K)!... but, and here's the thing, when I got it, I got from amazon some memory, so I brought it up to 32GB with 1TB of SSD. My question still is, shall I be able to upgrade the memory on these ones, or they come as they already are???? Thanks Sagi! You rock, man
500 nits is pretty shit for the imac actually considering the price, and a great 4.5k display 500 nits seems too low., need a pro imac model asap.. i ordered the miniled 12.9 ipad not because of the m1 but the miniled is the reason why.. my current i7 15 inch macbook works fine but if they come out with stupid white and/or thick bezels on a macbook, magsafe bs, i will never even consider buying one. iphones need to switch to usb c/thunderbolt. no one wants ten sorts of cables, different cable for your iphone, macbook, ipad, or watch(which i will never buy considering limited cababilities and cable. THANK you for your review, the mac mini seems to be a viable and smart option considering many things.

With the current shortage / price hikes of desktop components, GPU & the best AMD CPUs, a Mac mini might actually come in handy. Its price isn't terrible, and in most cases, you might have all the necessary stuff to have it work in tandem with your desktop, or simply be on a switch on the main display, right from the get go. And since the mac mini got the full sku, 8/8 cpu/gpu, the ram amount is depending on the work you do on it. BTW does Procreate work on the Mac Mini M1, with a wacom cintiq setup? The thought of being able to have a desktop experience of the Procreate drawing/painting app, would be, quite something!
no, still only facetime voice or video i think. i have the cellular version and its only good if you are without your phone... not that i am ever without my phone :-)
I feel like the IMac is such a great choice for aesthetic offices/users who truly enjoy minimalism The all in one form factor is great for people who aren’t very technical and creative people That said, the Mac mini is very appealing in terms of price and for users who are more used to a “traditional” pc setup Like you said, both have their places and it ends up to personal preference and needs. Very good videos - thank you. Can an old iMac be used as a 'display' for an MacMini? (or any other M1 device?
Nice comparison. Thank you for helping us to make an informed decision.
Can you say which one is quieter ? Would just watch videos on youtube or surf in the internet
Still happy with the iMac?
Still happy with the iMac?
Thanks!
Mac Mini with other stuff, monitor, speakers, etc, takes many more cords, more plugs etc.
personally i'll go for the imac. even tho buying all the accessories seperately isn't an issue for me, i think the imac is GREAT value for the price (might be the first time ive said that about apple lol)
why do i think that? well, i tried mix'n'matching windows pc parts to make a custom pc that has the same performance and features as the imac and it came out to around 2k dollars.
I doubt I would use the True Tone option, if it works like my phone = yellowish whites in True Tone :(
In regard to the singular fan. I do not edit videos, and use more basic photo editors, so I am thinking the thermal issues might not be a concern in the base model. There are other considerations however, such as do I need Ethernet or not? Lots to think over.
Is there a good 1080p webcam you can recommend that will be compatible with the Mac Mini?
How good do you think the iMac display will be for photo editing let’s say compared to something like the BenQ SW321C that you’ve reviewed? Of course know the BenQ will be more accurate, but will it be by a lot?
-- Question - does any of those system featured a touch screen feature for Apple Pencil?
Thanks for watching. No - only the iPad has a touchscreen.
Uhm i think mac mini can hold upto 2 monitors alone
Can Mac mini work with iMac display? I have iMac 2014 but since it’s so old I can’t get updates anymore.
They no longer offer the gig Ethernet option for the iMac. I wish they did.
I have a 2012 Mac mini which has been maxed out. Do I really need to upgrade to the M1 Mac mini?
Does the current mini no longer meet your needs? If it still works well for what you need - do not upgrade. If you need more, the new Mini is nice. Hope that helps. Thank you for being part of the channel!
Awesome and helpful video! Thanks man!
So glad it was helpful. Thank you for being part of the channel!
Talk about setups with imac vesa mount 🤗
i see we are blessed with another Tech Gear Talk video! Good job with this one Sagi!
Thanks so much Sky!
I have a room that is green. When ever calibrate my Benq PD 3200U. The images usually come out tinted towards greenish when I view it in my phone screen. Is there a workaround?
Do a Test of Logic Pro on the M1 asap. I'd like to see what it can do.
Nice analysis
Perfect. This is my current first world
Problem. To replace an aging iMac 🖥
Firstly I love your videos on apple m1 products. Its my first ever apple product , which I am planning to buy. Can I go with m1 macbook air or m1 I mac ? I do not have any accessories to set or else I would have gone for m1 mac mini. Please suggest me?
Would you ever take advantage of the portability of the Air? If so, Air - otherwise, Mini! Hope that helps
@@TechGearTalk thank you for your suggestion, in that case I am going with mac air..
Has there been any info or rumors regarding an updated (M1X or M2) chip for the Mac Mini?
Dear sir,
I am doing research in the market in which I have found out that there is a lot of demand for mirrorless camera in entry level but there is no comparison video which tells the benefits and disadvantageds of Canon m50 Mark II versus Sony a6100. Can you please provide it?
As much as I wanted to give m1 a try. After doing spreadsheets of both new, used and refurbished iMacs/Mac mini, they are way overpriced. Decided to build a micro itx build that has more RAM,storage and was capable of doing both video editing and 3D modeling. Not to mention I still got a 4k monitor included too within the price range of the most expensive iMac.
May I ask if it's possible to connect a HD monitor to a Mac mini? And must we get an Apple Keyboard/Mouse? Thanks
You can add an HD monitor and you don’t need Apple mouse/keyboard
İmac has a superb monitor, i need to invest 4k monitor too for macmini
Correct!
You rock, man
NO BEACH BALL!!! Good question - both machines can not be upgraded (not the RAM and not the SSD).
@@TechGearTalk which both machines? Imac and Mac Mini? But Not 27"?
If you buy the mini, and do any zooming or the cost of a WebCam needs to be added.
Absolutely (and microphone)
And remember that must of us are going to geek out on keyboards, mice, webcam, cams etc. I went for the atem mini ISO + Sony camera for webcam. It cost more than the Mac mini 😂
waiting for your latest imac and ipad pro product review....
Pretty sure I'd like to have Mac mini even though I like the color of iMac so so much
thank you for the video. We need a mac mini pro or a mini mac pro
Thanks for watching William! A Mac Mini Pro would be great!
Intresting video ❤️loved it
Glad you enjoyed it!
i made a video explaining why the mac mini is way more appealing and easy to build a desk set up that suits you for cheaper than the iMac. great video dude.
Appreciate it.
Hey, bro, pls, can you do the subtitles for your fantastic videos, because l'm from Russia and I find it realy difficult to perceive spoken English. Note this comment pls)
I am definitely working on it!
@@TechGearTalk ok, thank you for it😉
I prefer Mac mini, because I already have magic keyboard and mouse, also lcd display and blue teeth speaker.....
The Mac Mini with the M1 is such an incredible machine, I only wish it offered a 32 GB of RAM option, for future proofing.
Can you plug an Xbox series x into the imac monitor? If not then I might jump into the apple ecosystem with a mini.
iMac cannot be used as a external monitor sadly
Thank you! As always, very good information.
So glad I could help Marilyn. Thanks for watching and for being part of the channel!
I cant wait for the rumoured M2 chips
It's going to be something special for sure!
Epic Video!
Thank you so much!
You just convinced me to buy an iMac.
Is Apple coming out with an iMac with a bigger screen anytime soon?
Maybe an iMac Pro
Can we do face time call on only wi- fi version?
yes
@@TechGearTalk thank you sir. Actually I am planning to buy I pad pro 12.9 inch cellular version 256 gb but now I changed my mind and looking for only wi-fi version.
I’ve had a Thunderbolt Display for years. For me, it was a no-brainer. Mac Mini all the way. The only rwal issue I have is with my Mouse dying at login. So I have an extension USB cable which lets me easily replug. (This issue re-surfaced with Big Sur 11.2. Come on, Apple). Coming from a lone time of writing $oftware on the Command Prompt of successive DOS, Windows 95 through Windows XP platforms, and, having successfully ported some of it over to Apple Terminal, I’d say Apple has a long way to go to become a competent software provider. /* end rant
Super grateful for the insight!
MacBook Air + 2k monitor + keyboard + mouse = $1400 (portable and dual display)
iMac = $1300
maybe my eyes are wrong but this true tone feature are really bad, never using it. And i imagine how it will be pointless when you are making color grading. Maybe i'm wrong, but when i set true tone to my iphone it not match whites. It is more yellow compared to near white paper aside. Maybe someone can explain it? Do not get this...
Appreciate you sharing your experience. Maybe I'll do a video about it
@@TechGearTalk Sounds great! Maybe a pool - who is using true tone in daily life? Hmm... for eyes may be it is less disturbing at night, but it is really true tone? I have doubt.. 🤷♂️
@@cosmolv Tried it on my SE 2020 and everything went yellow. No thanks! Not going to use TrueTone. No need for Sepia tone ;)
Mac Mini M1.
Appreciate the insight. I haven't looked into procreate on the M1. I know they are releasing an update for the M1 iPad Pro
Can I voice call in I pad pro cellular version as like a phone?
no, still only facetime voice or video i think. i have the cellular version and its only good if you are without your phone... not that i am ever without my phone :-)
@@AverageDadOfficial Can we continuously use internet 3 to 4 hours with our phone's hot spot ,when we are outside the home in wi-fi version?
You can only make cellular calls with Wi-Fi calling and an iPhone - hope that helps
@@praveenkumar-kk2jj yes, that’s what I use when I travel 👍

Neither...wait for the new faster Mac Mini coming Q4 2021.
Great breakdown, Segi! You hit all the important points to make a sound buying decision. Nice job! Another excellent video.
I feel like the IMac is such a great choice for aesthetic offices/users who truly enjoy minimalism
The all in one form factor is great for people who aren’t very technical and creative people
That said, the Mac mini is very appealing in terms of price and for users who are more used to a “traditional” pc setup
Like you said, both have their places and it ends up to personal preference and needs.
Thank you for making these videos, they are both informative and fun to watch!
Super grateful for the support and your personal insight!
You should do a 10 reason in 10 minutes why to get the iMac when you get it
Good idea!
Mini is better
Both are good options for sure - glad you found what works better for you!
It’s Ross Gellar reviewing a Mac!!!!

I'd go for an iMac any day!
It looks great! Can't wait for Friday!
mac mini has better value :D, in Germany that stupid imac 24 8core cpu 8 core gpu cost 1669€ vs mac mini same configuation 719 €
Oh wow, that's a big difference.
The imac is nice but i wish it would be a 27". I feel like 24" is too small.....
Get mac mini and buy a 27"
Hopefully we'll get one soon

Let's go!
Hello, does anyone know when will the iMac be available to buy in store?
Should be Friday
In my household, we’ve owned many apple devices (5 iPhones and 5 iPad Pros), but I’m thinking of buying a Mac for our next home computer. Your two minute summarization at the beginning of this video helped a lot.
The Mac mini is more interesting. The imac will get another version soon.
