She's astonishing. I discovered her a few years ago - starting to get into Brazilian music via psychedelic group Os Mutantes. I didn't realise she'd died recently. She carried on producing a very high level of output throughout her long career.
She used to say she wanted to sing until her death. At 91, she left an album and a concert she recorded two days before her passing. Amazing til the end.
A little bit of history about her. She was forced to marry pretty young, in teens age, and suffered a lot. She was abused in may ways. At 21 she was already a widow, with 4 kids, 2 stillborns and living in poverty, starving. As she always had a dream to make a carrer in singing, she felt that was the only thing that could turn her life for the better, she didn't have much choice at the time. She applied to a singing contest in a TV program, hosted by a famous samba composer, Ary Barroso. When entering the stage, he, trying to be funny, asked: "wow, you are so ugly, what planet did you come from?", and she replied: "the same as yours, Ary, planet hunger". Then she sung and obtained the highest score. I would like to say that, from there, she went sky rocket, but no. She had to still try. And eventually she made it. I have mad respect for her, it takes a lot of resilience to live what she lived and mark the lives of so many people. Ah, and she was elected the Voice of the Millennium by the BBC radio in 1999.
Elza Soares is an icon, a legend, with a life story of a lot of struggle and overcoming. She was elected by the BBC London as "the singer of the millennium" in 1999. She sang to the end, as she wished and as she said/sang in her last album: “Até o fim eu vou cantar, eu quero cantar Eu quero é cantar, eu vou cantar até o fim”
And, in a way, she'll keep singing for as long as we exist. Her reward for facing everything she faced is being immortalized in her song, becoming not only an icon buy also a symbol of Brazilian culture in music.
I like to think that Elza Soares was our Nina Simone, suffered, but never silenced her voice. A cry of resistance against discrimination and injustice against women. All her songs that I listen to and makes me cry a lot.
Thank you, Ms Roars for show Elza Soares to your followers. The comparison with jazz singers is not exaggerated. If she were an American or even a European artist, she would be a jazz diva celebrated around the world.
One thing you should know that explains why Elza Soares was BBC's Records - The singer of the Milenium in 2000 is that she were born with one extra pair of vocal chords. She had been studied by USA Universities for a long time, then they found the extra pair of vocal chords. There are MANY interviews with her where she tells that. Another info is that she was Louis Armstrong friend. I remember watching one video tape of her singing in Paris in Operá Theather. GUESS WHAT, she was singing with NO gd mic and her voice was WAAAAAAAAAY up th orchestra. The world's end woman was AMAZING.
Dear Elza Soares, the wonderful voice of Brazilian jazz, samba, choro. She is the finest flower of Brazilian musical culture, toasting life and the world. Missing You, darling!
she met louis armstrong at a festival in a country next to ours. and louie wanted to meet her, when he got there he said my daughter she understood nothing since she was semi-illiterate and didn't know who louie armistrong was someone translated it, so she said my father in english.he hugged elza and they took a picture with her
I had the privilege of having her as my neighbor for a couple years. RIP About the guitar introduction, it's only Yamandu Costa, probably one of the best guitarrists in activity in the world!
For me her Pot-Pourri “Quebra lá que eu quebro cá” in the album “Do Cóccix até o Pescoço” is such an statement for her vocal abilities! I think I haven’t listened to someone reach the vocal registry’s she reached in that performance! It’s more amazing when I realized she was over 70 years old when she recorded it! What a woman!
And that, my friends, is what we call Samba (with uppercase "S"). The guitarist with the orange shirt is Yamandu Costa. One of the best in the world. Brazil has certainly a lot of great musicians, not just percussionists.
Elza Soares é a voz do século, segundo a Rádio BBC de Londres, e um dos maiores talentos brasileiros de todos os tempos. Com mais de 70 anos de carreira, a artista marcou com seu canto diversos estilos, momentos e sentimentos!
Thank you for making this video. Elza is one of Brazil's greatest artists of all time. In fact she is the voice of the millennium. I grew up listening to her and absolute love and miss her deeply
About 20 years ago Elza said in an interview that in the years she lived in the USA, I don't remember which university, but the fact is that they found out that she has an extra vocal cord, which makes possible these incredible vocal effects that are her musical signature.
She was the original singer of mas que nada featured by Black eyed peas. Yamandu Costa is internationally acclaimed as one of best virtuoso guitarist lately.
Beth, darling, love ur videos. Please do a series on her. She’s done so much, on so many different styles and always being socially relevant. She was awarded by bbc London in 2000 the singer of the millennium, she has worked with eletronic music recently, u will love to know more

Obrigada por te conhecer assim, muito de longe, pela poesia que você fez ser presença única na face da terra. Te amamos! Vá em paz! ❤️
This was a GREAT reaction! That's what a BIG smile can do LOL I have this song in my playlist for years and never knew there were a video o it. Always loved the guitar without knowing it was Yamandu Costa! It had to be! LOL
Thank you for reacting to Elza Soares. She was legendary!! There is another Brazilian singer called Gal Gosta and you should definately react to this song of hers called Meu nome é Gal (My name is Gal), in which she makes an incredible "duet" with the guitarist. She isn't only an artist per se, but a (by then) living legacy. An entity. Those lyrics talk so much about her own private life, since it's about male violence against women and she herself was a survivor. I really, REALLY recommend you to take a look at her bio, not only listen to her (which is also a pleasure ❤️) (Btw, she was awarded as the "Singer of the Millenium" by a well-known music newspaper years ago. Now you had a tiny bite of it all, please bite harder then 😊 Thank you so much for reviewing Elza, she means so much for so many people in so many ways ❤️ and then she will live forever 🙋✊
Elza is amazing.. Just love her voice, personality and how she stands for important themes.. She is an icon that will live forever. Maybe, you should check out the album "Do Cóccix até o Pescoço", especially "A carne" track. Such strong message with an amazing interpretation.
- e ela disse: - Do planeta fome! 🤗😍😘💖✨
I'm Brazilian and please I suggest you to listen her album: "Baterista Wilson das Neves". She was very young in that album, her voice singing some bossa Nova and sambas it's just perfect, a little touch of jazz, it's everything. I feel so excited remembering this album lol I just want people to feel so excited as me.
The very fact that she gathered two of the best acoustic guitar players in the world - including Yamandu Costa - to play with her, speaks a lot to her stature and importance
She first performed on a radio show in the 1950s. From a famous songwriter and presenter named Ary Barroso. She was so poor that she borrowed a dress. and the presenter asked, "What planet do you come from?" and she replied: "From the planet of hunger".
What a loss! We brazilians will miss her so much. She have a great history of resilience. On Her first time in TV, a singer contest show, she was so miserable, malnourished, simple clothers. The presenter looked at her and asked "what the hell? From wich Planet did you come from?". Everybody laughted at her and she answered "I came from the starvation Planet". To this, they shut up. So she sang like this way she used to sing. when she finished the same presenter was shaken, hugged her and sad "a new star is born". She have recent albuns named starvation planet and woman from the end of The world. Everything she did was so great and impacting.
Louis Armstrong called her his child in 1962. She was an icon in Brazil. In the 60's. In the 2000 she made a comeback: as The voice of a generation. She died this year; at 92.
She's astonishing. I discovered her a few years ago - starting to get into Brazilian music via psychedelic group Os Mutantes. I didn't realise she'd died recently. She carried on producing a very high level of output throughout her long career.
Her personal life also is amazing! She's a fighter, a symbol of strength since the 60's!
Rita Lee, the Mutantes' singer, also has a great solo career
Mulher do Fim do Mundo. One of her's last albums. Just listen.
She was singing until the day before she died. The woman of the end of the world. 91 years. The biggest and most loved brazilian singer.
The biggest Brazilian singer was Elis Regina but Elsa was a human rights fighting legend.
She used to say she wanted to sing until her death. At 91, she left an album and a concert she recorded two days before her passing. Amazing til the end.

Ah, and she was elected the Voice of the Millennium by the BBC radio in 1999.
And she married with Garrincha. Soccer player world cup champion 58 and 62.
muito bom o seu texto. Gostaria de saber escrever assim em inglês. Parabéns!
Great info for the people bro!
As a side note: Ary Barroso is the composer of one of the most famous Brazilian songs worldwide: "Aquarela do Brasil".

she sounds like a female Louis Armstrong! I think that's the most accurate description for her. So fascinating!
The guitar player with orange shirt is Yamandu Costa. He is a genius! One of the greatest in the world!
I had the honor of interview her once. Full of generosity, irreverence, open honesty, empathy, sense of humor and talent, a true grande dame.
