I started bawling my eyes out when Mike died, but when I realized Brian survived it completely shocked me merely for the fact that Mike probably thought Brian was already dead. What added to that was the foreshadowing throughout, with Mike saying “If something ever happened to you I’d take care of Janet” and when Jake said on that same day “ever heard of the Butterfly Effect?”

As a cop with 22 years on the job, i would say that this was one of the most realistic movies that i have ever seen in so much as capturing good cops interactions with each other and the morals and integrity involved as well as conflicts with doing what's right vs what u may actually want to do. I have always wanted to take my badge off and throw hands with a suspect who only understands and respects that kind of interaction, but in reality the repercussions of that in this day and age r career ending ....over all ...great job ...great movie ...the chemistry with all of the actors def worked. As a cop who has always taken my job and my oath seriously and who has always done my best to keep the community that i represent safe, it was nice to see a movie that i felt accurately represented me

I’m not gonna take off my gun belt and fist fight someone either, but it’s a good mix of a hollywood angle on real police like events and the interaction between officers.
It’s not completely perfect, but I think the point of the movie was to show the bond between the two main characters

Whereas End of Watch had a smaller budget and smaller studio, which gave him pretty much free reign for the film.

so is no one going to talk about the utter realism used in this movie? like the fact that the police cruisers ACTUALLY used the correct style light bars (which is the Arjent) or the fact that they ACTUALLY used the correct dispatch double beep tone when a call out comes over the radio? that imo was what made this movie real. I hate it when LAPD movies don't use the correct style light bars on the cars.

    Great analysis!
I have a friend that's a former LAPD officer and I asked him about how he felt about End of Watch and if it was real. He lit up and went on to tell me that he was stationed at the precinct the movie was filmed at and that both Jake and Michael went on ride alongs for months so they could learn to act like cops. He told me that in his experience the movie was 100% real because the shit they did everyday was what came out in the film.

I'm a middle-aged, softy. I get emotional when I see great acting. The realism and brotherly love that these two actors dug out and performed is damn near Shakespearean. Both Pena and Gyllenhaal deserved SO many more awards for this. An incredible film for its time.

Everyone in this movie was absolutely phenomenal. The two main guys, Jake and Michael played their parts so well that if I didn't know they were acting, I would think that they're actual cops. The two girlfriends as well, they made it that much more real. Long story short, this is one of my favorites, without a doubt.

Any cop can tell you the significance of the last scene. Man I sobbed at that funeral scene but I was cracking up at the end. That’s our world. We push off the understanding of how fragile we are and supplant it with tough, gritty, gallows humor. Every single one of us has had a conversation like that with a partner many times over. The best part of the movie for me (and a lot of other cops I know) is the banter between the two, because it’s what we know. It’s who we are. That’s why we love this movie so much. It’s us. And people finally get to see that.

But at the last scene, WHEN I was watching the movie I was confused too, now I watched it in your video and I broke down crying. Because it's not about 2 cops, it's about 2 friends.

Thank you SO much for pointing out the breaking of the 180 rule in the fight scene. I loved the Bourne movies, but the second one was really hard to watch because they purposefully did NOT use steadicams in the fight scenes - they wanted it to feel legitimately confusing and more focused on the fight than on the environment. Through the way the editor compiled the shots in End Of Watch, however, you can actually still follow what's happening in this fight without getting nauseated.

The dialogue for the Mexican gang members is extremely accurate as well. This is coming from a person who grew up in these areas so i really got give the director props for this movie.

I watched this movie after I saw an interview with a retired no-nonsence Oakland, CA cop (who is originaly from Soviet Union). He sort of swiped all the cop movies as full off fantasy, but recomended this one as being the most realistic one. So I'm going with that. Hhe also said that the Training Day was pretty up there too.
PS.: speaking of foreshadowing, there's another one, even darker in my opinion. During the wedding their sergeant gives a drunken rant about Garcia (?) taking "his" bullet, and ends it with a heartbroken "Fuck it, man." I can see Brian having the same kind of speech a couple of years down the line.

What’s really funny about the two leads is they DID NOT get along at all when they first met. Ayer knew that if we didn’t buy these guys chemistry as brothers the film wouldn’t work. He actually sent them to buddy boot camp essentially to make sure they could get along and deliver the performances they gave.

30 years in law enforcement, 3 of that with LASD. This movie nailed the camaraderie and the humor (as well as cynicism) of the street cop and the grizzled "veteran" (Van Howser). I've been to many funerals for my brothers in the years that I was a cop, and the emotion I felt watching the funeral scene in the movie wretched that all back in one fell swoop. I like how he added the final scene showing the bond between the two characters to break up the negative scene and sort of end it on a "good note"...a way to make it a happy ending despite it not being one.

However: This is not how the everyday reality of Police work looks alike. It is still a movie and therefore taking certain artistic and dramatic liberties is absolutely justified.

Given his past repertoire of films, I can understand why the hype was so much for Suicide Squad. Cool trailer, big cast, and the thought "man, if he made such a hit with only 7 mil, imagine what what he could do with 250 million funding this!!!"
Considering what he's talking about at 1:20, it's safe to say it's like Biggie said, "More Money, More Problems". More money involved, less personal freedoms for his creativity as a director and screenwriter to be applied, and more chaos when going through multiple people to take the movie from script to shooting.
That said ,i'd imagine that a lower budget would've had Suicide Squad shot as a lower scale, "Snatch"-esque crime action thriller, where the Squad is sent on a suicide mission to take out a crime lord (like hmm, i dont know, the Joker as the trailer led to believe) without the govt's hands getting dirty, like the premise is supposed to be. But, it went for the heavy handed "saving the world from apocalyptic threat route", and came up empty handed. Amongst other production problems im sure given the major budget involved and people to work with.
But ah well, life goes on.

Through the entire movie their relationship feels so real. It feels so genuine as the movie progresses and makes the ending so devastating. One of the best movies of all time for me. One of the best low budget films as a SoCal resident the sets were spot on and authentic. They really showed the true nature of evil and how two friends sacrifice to push it back. One of the best movies I’ve seen and the whole cast meshes extremely well that their relationships also feel authentic and believable. A truly less is more approach that hits home with an emotional ending that tied it all up. And the ending scene with them both laughing and joking is so bittersweet and humorous all in one that it really brings it home.

You missed the best scene - after David Harbour gets stabbed the Sergeant conducts a little street seance under the streetlights. The Police family is extended from Brian and Z to include the rest of his relief as they put the night to order. The Sgt brings the situation to an end - "are we Ok?" - gets nods - "get back to work". I've taken part in hundreds of those little shareholder meetings under the streetlights when everyone else is sleeping. The whole movie is great, but that scene really hit home.

Great breakdown, when this movie first dropped I was obsessed with it, the realism is truly perfect. Interestingly enough, on DVD they had deleted scenes and the alternate ending was actually supposed to have them both die. Saw the funeral scene and everything with both of their caskets. I think the director realized that it would be too dark and a very sad ending. So it changed to what we all know now. I like this ending better and I wish more films were like this gem.
