No pressure test, no inspections. What a hack job...
When I first moved to my place, I installed a 500 gallon tank. Hauled it home on the bale forks on the back of a tractor. After about 20 years of buying cheap propane in the late summer and then paying about twice that for a fill in the winter, I got a 1000 gallon tank and only fill up in late summer. Saves me $300-$500 per year in fuel costs.
I was told that here in NS Canada the propane companies don't use the 1000lbs for home use any more....as they make more money with multiple tank rentals and delivery fees.
How much to run your home off propane per year?
I just filled my tanks (one 500 gallon and one 250) last week at the summer special price of $1.60 a gallon. It will be $2 a gallon at the first frost and $2.25 a gallon the first real cold spell.

Buy your own tank. It's an investment at that point. Most propane companies install free to give their new clients incentive to choose them.

No way I would not have run a 2” conduit for that line to live in. I’ve had my line leak 4 times from a puncture just from soil movement. We have used both copper and this style. Finally I just buried a 2” conduit and now if it leaks I pull it out and replace it.

Ground that tank good with those trees that close. My daughters rent house tank was real close to a tree and lightning hit the tree and jumped to the tank. You could see what looked an arc spot where it hit the tank. Then the flex hose behind the cook stove arced where it was close together and burned a hole in it and had a fire going. Just lucky we was right there and ran outside and turned the tank off and threw water on the wall and put it out. The landlord moved that tank over several feet.
That's how they did it on the ranch I worked on in SD. They were on the electric grid but that massive tank was what got them through the winters and refilled the BBQ tanks.
I would have put the riser on the back side of the tank just to dress it up a little - I have had a pinhole leak in plastic gas line, so I dont cover up the gas line till a pressure test has been done - nothing worse then having to dig up the gas line again
Why would you not have a pad pored level for the tank 100 ft. from the house, looks unsafe period.
I know my fathers set up required a pad plus a barrier around the tank.....or the company wouldn't fill your tank....
I agree. Those little concrete blocks look entirely inadequate. They must be installing in an area with lax or non-existent building code. Even so, one can't ignore physical laws, and the homeowner may end up paying the price in the future. I would have used a couple of prefabricated reinforced concrete sleepers at the very least, equivalent to concrete railroad ties, with pre-cast threaded studs to properly secure the cylinder against movement. The installation shown here wouldn't pass muster in earthquake zones, like within 250 miles of the U.S. Pacific Coast from the Mexican border to the Canadian border.

Well they should’ve used 16” x 16” blocks at the minimum instead they used 8” x 16” which are inadequate for a 1000gal tank

Yes, The International Fire Code. I'd guess this installation might have been under the 2015 edition. Table 6104.3 says that an above ground LP container between 501 to 2,000 gallons needs to have at least a minimum 25 ft separation from buildings, property lines, or a public way.

The black sleeve is just to protect the pipe from damage the connections are the silver ends and they are a press fitting just chamfer the gas pipe and press it in

You can see the warning tape sticking out of the ground at time mark 13:35. The guy also mentioned installing it after they put a little dirt cover on the gas line.
I think I might have used sand to back fill that plastic line at least 6" and then the "tracer" wire and tape. Pretty tough to locate a u/g line 5 yrs later without a wire...

Better ensure that tank is RATED for burial, because steel corrodes and LP or NG can permeate soil while leaking making for some interesting explosions.

Proper installation, cathodic protection process, next to the ground installed tank with, an anode or multiple devices, and adequately coated tanks very much reduce very long-term Security in the prevention of leakage. You have to check the soil electrical charge surrounding the tank typically every 3 years. This must be done by qualified installers , propane service people.

How come you do not use a narrower bucket for trenches like what you needed for this little gas line?
If you have the narrow bucket with you that day... I was more worried about the gas line being shallower than 24", I always sunk my gas lines to a minimum of 24 clearance over the top. I had a C99 Ditch Witch held together with spit and a prayer, it would dig 27" to bottom of trench.

If you had a generator using LP, a gas stove, water heater and furnace, you would be good for at least two years off grid. You could conserve and make it longer. The initial cost would be less than those solar panel setups I've seen.

Folks, if you have one and own it; make sure you have your Chinese regulator changed out for one made in the Carolinas. Mine leaked out over $300 of propane with it's four screw seal.

Gee, how about measure the distance between the feet on the bottom of the tank, and appropriately appropriately place the cinder blocks at that correct distance apart and in line with one another. That way you make sure you have a solid footing underneath the cinder block without disturbing the natural ground pack. Then you simply guide the tank feet on to the cinder block Center. Like a stone wall you make sure that first course of the wall is setting on undisturbed or very well packed material. That's 101 for assuring sound footing. And it certainly is safer for the installers, in placement of any heavy object upon ground material.
You have to keep forest fires in mind. You don't want that thing blowing up right next to your house. . . I'd keep it as far away as possible. Just me.
You had the tractor there. Why not bury that unsightly tank? Makes it look like Sanford and Son's with that thing.

Just bought and installed a 1000 gallon tank myself only to find out all the propane suppliers want to see permits before they will fill it. The last thing I want is county inspectors snooping around my property.

@@awakentruth1116 Found out it it had 350 gallons in it when I bought it from a failed pot grow. Not problem getting it filled. They just want to see that it's hooked to an appliance. In my case and on demand water heater.
Paint the tank brown & leave it in the woods is what I wood do.

manbeastx69 To up grade the tank to one that you can bury and cover was $215.00 plus maybe $350.00 to dig the hole and bury the tank, so maybe a $600.00 up grade would bury the tank.

I gave the home owner the option to bury the tank but he wanted to try out this thousand gallon tank for a winter and see if maybe a two thousand gallon set up would be better as he is not sure just how much propane he is really going to burn this winter.
That tank is not designed to be buried.

Propane goes up and down from $0.75 to $1.25 per gallon.

Can I use this 1,000 gallon tank for a mini fuel/gas station for vehicles?
I love the idea of having fuel on site but I don't think I would bury it in the ground in fact I would try and elevate it so that you can use gravity for filling vehicles in a scenario where you don't have power also you can monitor the tank for leaks and access the tanks easily for adding stabilizers.

@@straighttothebank4124 I still think you're a smart man to have your own gas station for both convenience and preparation in case of some kind of catastrophe. Which means you may want to go the extra mile and build some kind of solid concrete storage bunker to store your fuel in, something that would survive a hurricane.

Juuuust about twice as long as the 500 gallon model.
There is a formula that most companies will work out for you.....as most of these guys know exactly how much you will need by the number and size of your appliances/btu's required, converted into lbs, you do need a certain size of cylinder or cylinders for the proper flow rate and in this case a large tank.... just google it.

silly to dig out for the high side, it only puts the tank in the dirt so it will rust quickly and be hard to repaint. i would have kept the high side and added spacers to the low side if there was no room for more blocks. in fact, all my tanks (3) are sitting on a concrete pad with aluminum spacers under the legs (to prevent corrosion caused by concrete/steel contact). common sense is not common these days......g

There doesn't have to be a pad. Just a foundation made from blocks, but 4 blocks is not enough. There should be a minimum of 10 blocks, 5 on each end. There is tracer tape. Tank doesn't have to be "grounded" as the metal sitting on the blocks sitting on the ground is ground.
@@drwgmail I agree. I would have put blocks (wider blocks) under at a space of 3 or 4 feet apart. Why not add that security and safety? That tank is gonna shift due to the dirt giving way after the propane is added to it.

On the grid means being reliant on utility companies for the supply of water, gas, power etc. Using propane tanks allows you to not be reliant on that, therefore you are technically off the grid. You could make the argument using a company to resupply your gas tank is not technically "off the grid"... but that's a stretch considering you can use a 1000 gallon propane tank to autonomously fuel your home for up to a year. Couple that with other fuel sources like solar, wood, etc. and you aren't relying on the city to provide you essential resources to fuel your livelihood. I'd say propane is a solid choice to move off the grid.

propane.. gas.. water.. makes no difference. If you have to continuously buy propane you aren't off grid. Propane is the dirty little secret of the "off grid" world.
The "grid" is the wired electrical and gas pipeline grid. I don't see any utility supply lines....
Even in SHTF natgas and LP will continue to be produced and shipped. Oil and gas still flow in many places under the most primitive conditions which is no surprise considering they've been produced since the 1800s. Many Americans have gas wells on their property.

I'm confused. What part of 'off grid' is a tank that has to be filled by others?? And this installation foundation looks pretty schlock to me! You're worried about water erosion but you place this tank on 4" blocks on bare earth. Better have termite traps placed around the house since you are building in their feeding grounds.
Please change the clickbait title. This is not an off grid property, unless you're going to produce your own hydrogen and pump it into the tank but it does not look like that is what you are planning.

Exactly, the "propane grid". Now if he were to have some solar panels and used a hydrogen generator as a dump and pumped it into his tank then he could claim being off grid. A lot of people either sell their surplus electricity back to the grid for pennies on the dollar or dump it into hot water. Both of which is a waste in my opinion. Hydrogen gives you the ability to use your surplus electricity when you want and a manner of your convenience. So much more flexibility also, you can heat your water when yo need it, cook with it, heat your home, run a generator or even a vehicle if need be. You can't just stick a propane tank in the ground and be dependent on a company to keep it filled and claim your off grid, it's a lie.
Yeah and what he needs gas to run his chainsaw that makes him part of the gasoline grid-? Off grid is a continium. Some people are really off grid, like bush Alaska, but even a guy on an boat is gonna use propane. It's safer too.
