    ►SCRIPT
So to make his mixes exciting and unique in every performance, Marshmello tends to Drop Mix
So Drop Mixing is done when a DJ switches the drop of the current with the next song.
So here’s how Marshmello does it:
When the current song reaches its build up section specifically 16 beats before its drop, Marshmello then mixes the next song’s build up section in which is also 16 beats from its drop, then he works on fading out the current song and fading in the next song so that the 4 beat countdown we hear will be the next song’s.
So how do you do this transition yourself?
So play your current song, wait till it reaches its build up section, then once you’re there, play the next song via the cue point we just made, then work on shifting your volumes before the next song reaches its 4 beat countdown section.
Balancing EQs and smoothly mixing songs with them can be tricky for beginners, but Marshmello has a sure fire way to smoothly mix tracks together only using 2 Low EQ knobs.
With the current song’s Low EQ at the 12 o’clock position and the next song’s Low EQ at the 7 o’clock position, he then mixes the next song in by slowly bringing its volume fader up to the top, and once there he then grabs the current song’s and next song’s Low EQ, and shifts them, so that the next song’s Low EQ is at the 12 o’clock position, and the current song’s Low EQ is at the 7 o’clock position.
So the challenge of this technique is using your ears to gage the pace of how you’re going to shift those Low EQs. So to smoothen his transitions even further Marshmello also utilizes 2 Color FX.
So let’s talk about the first one which is the Space CFX. You can think of the Space CFX as a combination of a Filter, Delay and Noise effect
So Marshmello doesn’t go crazy on the Filter FX. He actually tends to use it quite sparingly, but when he does so, he uses the effect to mix out from a song
Knowing how to use the Filter FX is one of the important things a DJ must learn, and luckily using it is quite simple and intuitive.
All you gotta do to use is, turn the Filter knob clock wise, then brings the previous song’s volume fader down when you’re about to mix out.
Now most pro DJs use Filter in combination with an effect, and the effect Marshmello tend uses to smoothly mix out of a track is Reverb.
Using Reverb creates a nice dissipating reverb tail that lingers shortly after you deactivate it, making it perfect to use when mixing out of tracks.
So all you have to do is when you’re high pass filtering your track away, is simply turn on the Reverb effect on the song you’re mixing from, then high pass filter your track, and bring down its volume fader.

I realized pretty quickly.that this is how.EDM djs.succeed... which just reinforced my belief that hip.hop.djs.are still king!!!... mix radio edits is way more impressive... i have tons of DJ edit mainstream music and it makes EDM style mixing easy for popular music... but its not impressive like quick urban mixing goes... but I tried it with EDM and I.quickly.learned how to sound like a DJ GOD... but it would only work with EDM crowds... basically Marshmello and the like learned how to capitalize on DJ respect while mixing the easiest possible tracks to mix... i appreciate what I learned from edm style mixing as a beginner... but they are not impressive... they are overpaid button pushers...unfortunately... the lights and big production really help them out from being exposed... with that said. I respect Marshmello for being able to be a regular dude...gain optional fame and wealth... and be highly respected yet still not recognizable in public...i would envy the dude if I had that emotion downloaded.

It’s not 4 beats, that was 4 bars, also known as measures. 4 beats is one bar in a 4/4 time signature.
It’s cool to teach music, but let’s teach it properly because if you tell me to sing 4 beats and you mean 4 bars, that’s a huge difference.

Great video once again - have learned massive amounts from you! Thank you! One question I have, when you are doing demos then you are showing how to set things up in Rekordbox. The issue I am having is then moving into a club and not knowing if things are going to work on CDJs in the same way. Most club setups don't have Hot Cues (so I setup hot cues and memory cues). But with the effects... is there any point in setting them up, I imagine that you would need pioneer mixers in the club (that are modern) for it to work. Thoughts?

    • @djcarlo
      @djcarlo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Mostly yes Bart. You'd need Pioneer gear there, but most clubs do use Pioneer mixers. Most of them, however, do have the basic effects, like echo, roll, etc, so you don't need to overthink the effects set up in Rekordbox, unless you use some of the less-common ones. Only the entry level mixers (Pioneer or not) lack effects outputs from what I recall.

😂 “The pros mix”... 😂😂😂 They aren’t mixing. It’s all pre recorded. It’s all just smoke and mirrors dude. Most of these EDM guys aren’t DJs. They just throw some pre recorded junk together and play it back at a show, while pretending to DJ by turning knobs on a mixer that most of the time isn’t even on, or plugged in. Congratulations by being duped by the illusion.

Carlo, your videos are always great:) The issue many of us have with "new age" DJs, is they only DJ the basics. Along with a great PR campaign, these DJ's, get huge main stage shows. 1) How do you get people to recognize actual DJing talent? 2) We would love to see someone with your skill set, working the mixer, and blowing people minds on a main stage.

    • @Whopcap
