  • Will these whales make it?
Farewell Spit, in New Zealand, is a narrow sand pit that is known as the 'whale trap'. In 2017, hundreds of whales found themselves beached on this very shore, in need of urgent rescuing. We speak to the one of the volunteers who was on a mission to help bring these majestic creatures to safety.

Thank you BBC for helping us to tell this story. Whale strandings are extremely complex, exhausting events. It is only with the assistance of local communities, our volunteer Marine Mammal Medics and many others that we are able to care for these whales and give them the chance of a second chance at life. If you'd like to support our work or find out more, please visit out website 💙💙💙

Then again, I know im in the minority here, but whale strandings are apart of nature, the orcas have no natural predator and nature has to keep them under control some way, that's why i believe beach strandings happen.

I wish there was a way to change the topography so it wasn't so dangerous, to erect a barricade of sorts to redirect the pods, but I understand that is impossible. @@ProjectJonahNZInc I do wonder how smart it is of us though to interfere with nature. Nature has a way of balancing itself out. When humans get in the way, all we seem to do is fail. I mean, we're killing mother earth at an alarming rate due to capitalism, so. Just how wise of us, is it to "save" what nature has chosen to take? Sick how we've decided to enact Genocide of our own, then attempt to save animals we feel should be saved. I'm not so sure humans know best. In fact, I know we don't. We've done nothing but made a huge mess of it all. If not for us, the earth and animals would thrive. We are the failure. Nature knows what it's doing.

An immediate rescue could be adopted for short term, aerial arrangement where a water pooled holder carrying the whale swiftly dropped in deep water by a special helicopter which is designed not for altitude but for weight.
But for the long run , to prevent it from happening it would be their behavior, what sounds alerts them and they change their track of movement would be the best to use during the period of their journey. But , what kind of mechanism is it that people are calling the state itself is not responsible for keeping checks for them as it had been their habitat these majestic creatures have obviously huge territorial habitat requirements.

Need come up with a solution to prevent them stranding, maybe a call/warning they are familiar with. Combination of human interaction with them and increased predators will make events like this more costly for the whales and more common.
Believe it or not, human actions rub off on intelligent species, the more creatures they see on land the more curious they will be about land... and curiosity kills the cat.

Hi Deborah, Farwell Spit is a big sandspit over 30kms in length (and being a natural phenomena it grows and shrinks year on year). It's also an internationally renown migratory bird sanctuary along with a number of other functions. We have tried a number of deterrents such as bubble nets, playing orca (predator) calls and pingers. While these have had limited success, they are often ignored by the whales after a day or two.

He's right, they're too small to be orcas, these are pilot whales, both are blackfish, which are small whales belonging to the family Orcinidae, blackfish (family Orcinidae) are the only toothed whales (suborder Odontoceti) to retain their macroraptorial lifestyle from their ancestors, as these whales are known to target prey larger than themselves, with orcas being predators to other marine amniotes, while other blackfish species would only prey on large-sized fish, there are six living blackfish species within five genera, the Melon-Headed Whale (Peponocephala electra), the Long-Finned Pilot Whale (Globicephala melas), the Short-Finned Pilot Whale (Globicephala macrorhynchus), the Orca (Orcinus orca), the Pygmy Killer Whale (Feresa attenuata), and the False Killer Whale (Pseudorca crassidens).
