Sam Hazo came to my school today and worked with us because our symphonic band is playing this and our wind ensamble is playing arabesque...he is the most amazing person i have ever met! He made our band sound like a college band after one hour of work. He told us meaningful stories, and he gave us inspiration to play this song to our best abillity. If anyone of you ever get the chance to meet mr.Hazo, you will LOVE him!!!! Me and my band are VERY lucky to have had this oppertunity!
It’s my senior year of band, we were suppose to perform it but obvi that canceled bc of corona. Had to write about our favorite piece from our selection and this is my favorite. I play tenor sax btw
fun fact! this was written for a high school in the area where he grew up, I actually attend this high school and we play this every year at graduation. There's parts of it that are pulled from our Alma Mater. I had no idea Sam Hazo was so well known, I'm so excited to see other bands all over the place playing his music!!
I'm playing this in band and it's beyond doubt one of the most majestic pieces I've ever had the pleasure of playing. The 2nd clarinet part is really simple, so as I'm playing, I get to listen to others more and that makes it all the more fun. The trash can part at measure 49 really brings this piece to life, I should say, but in my opinion, there is no single best part since all of it is an emotional ride from start to finish. Thank you, Mr. Hazo, and thank you to the saint who took the trouble to post this ^-^
I just came back from a band camp...I was given the honor of being a part of Samuel Hazo's honor band here at Swosu Band Camp...The best experience of my life.
I played this song in band during a really difficult time in my life where alot of changes were happening. The songs title means "a new and better change". I was able to connect to it on a deeply emotional level and this song will stay in my heart as the song that changed my outlook of my year and my life.
I played this in 8th grade for my spring concert and still to this day it is my favorite piece I have played besides maybe Four A Remix of Beethoven. It was written for Upper St. Clair High School in Pennsylvania which is the rival school of Mount. Lebanon the high school I would have gone to if I had stayed in Pennsylvania.
I loved playing this song in our last concert. The notes tugged at my heart. I thought I was about to cry when I played it at our last concert. I am definetly getting Novo Lenio and remembrance and qui non proficit deficit and a new beginning tattooed somewhere on me. :D
supposibly there are three parts to this song. part one gives you a feeling of rememberance. the second part is a feeling of reconstruction and rebuilding of times since past. the third is a feeling of a new begining.
I am playing this for The Cleveland Youth wind Symphony and I am in love with it. Now all that I have to do is play it in front of about 500 people and I will be good!
I feel like knowing what the song means and THEN playing it puts so much more feeling in the performance. Just played this about a month ago for our district concert band. It was such an amazing experience with this piece.
A friend told me we may be playing this in band. We just played Solas Ane. I play bass clarinet. I'm kinda sad this one has no place where bass clarinet takes the bass by itself because, seeing as I'm the onlyest bass clarinet in the band, I shone. And I was able to play Solas Ane on bass clarinet after five months because I just started playing in October :3
for the age group it was written for, I feel it is a great song! We used it for our middle school group, and for them it is a pretty good challenge, and all of the parents really liked it
I remember playing this in sophmore year. It still brings tears to my eyes. I love this song and I know it has a huge story behind it thus that is why it is so powerful!
@Mrtechguy94 coming from somebody who has played this song before...it is not advanced. it might say level 5 but its pretty easy literature. sometimes songs get higher levels because of range..but this song is easy. play it in junior high all you want but most of the Hazo songs i've played arent techically "advanced" its just a high range. ANY band can work on a song for half a damn year and still play it. we only had 6 rehearsals and perfected it. EAT IT!!!
@DarkArtsPrincess15 1. me too. I played it once as a 7th grader; I played bells. I loved it. The second time was my senior year in highs chool (we just had the concert less than a month ago). This time I played snare throughout the whole song. at 2:40 I played a snare/ride combo, and at 3:42 I played a snare/temple block combo. 3. I still have the mallet and perc. 1 parts :] I have the "original" from 7th grade, and a copy of this year's.
@DarkArtsPrincess15 II QUI NON PROFICIT DEFICIT... he who does not progress weakens. Very true. :D I love this song too. I most probably will be recordin it when we play it (against the rules but so wat I tape takeoffs in planes) and I will upload it, but it will sound very tromboney. What part dpo you play? I play 3rd trombone. Its weird since sometimes I am in a higher chair and sometimes I am in a lower chair. There is a low note that I don't know how to play-- the LOWEST note on there Eb
@tinyrsdimplepi yeah im the only bass clarinet in my band and we playing it and it does suck because it like the bass clarinet never gets any really cool parts in beautiful songs like this
@Kidagirl5 yeah but if you play Solas Ane, since you're the only bass clarinet, you have quite a few bass solos. In fact you would have a really big one with a piccolo/flute in the very beginning. And my band is really small, like, we have 3 tubas, one Bari sax, 5 euphoniums/baritones, and 3 tbones on bass line so I usually end up with the bass solos which is pretty cool. And since I'm pretty much the only one in tune everyone usually tunes off of me if not a tuba :3
Hazo's web site says it's a grade 3-1/2 piece. But it also says it was the Winner of the 2001 National Band Association Merrill Jones Composition Award for High School Level Music (Grade III/IV). :) And, I think this was written for a school Hazo had attended in younger days, Upper St. Clair High School.
@trumppy1: songs aren't rated as harder just because of their technicality. They might be a jr high level for fingerings and other techniques, but it requires more advanced musicality. And that is the case with most of hazo's music; the pieces require a lot more emotion and expression than other pieces
@DarkArtsPrincess15 we've played all kinds of exciting songs, but I have to say, this is my favorite. I think it's because I started playing drums in 6th grade, so learning the mallet part was pretty challenging. Looking back on it, today, as section leader... I had so many pleasant memories teaching the parts to the younger drummers who had just began learning to play ;]
@DarkArtsPrincess15 I told my band teacher abt you. She laughed. XDDD not at you, but at what you wrote and how attached yolu were to this piece. I know how you feel.I really didn't want to give back "In the Hall of the Mountain King" when we played it last year, but I did anyway. :D Music is CERTIANLY changing.
Hearing this song again and having played it before was an amazing experience. I was so happy by brother got to play this song too now.
I played this song for district honor band back in 7th grade and it was the best expirence I got to live. This piece brings back so many memories.

I just found your comment but had I stayed where I lived I would be going to the rival school

My favorite part to play is 2:48-3:20ish
+Abi Foster same, i play the timpani part and its pretty hard
Alice Cuiyerm-Lee I play the baritone part and its great.
I like 4:20 to the end, and the flute part is amazing!!

its hard to play as well ahahaha
OOOOOKAAAAAAYYYY...... so I am to play a six minute song in band??? :P I LOVE the second movement.
I loved playing this song in our last concert. The notes tugged at my heart. I thought I was about to cry when I played it at our last concert. I am definetly getting Novo Lenio and remembrance and qui non proficit deficit and a new beginning tattooed somewhere on me. :D

I played this song in 8th grade on tenor sax and man was this my most loved song to this day, I can't exclaim how awesome this song is
I like the second movement the best.
@trumppy1 No, this is a Grade 5 song (meaning it is advanced for a junior high concert band and even some high school concert bands).
We're playing this in my band class and it's really fun!
I play trombone and this song was so fun with the melody
for the age group it was written for, I feel it is a great song! We used it for our middle school group, and for them it is a pretty good challenge, and all of the parents really liked it
I remember playing this in sophmore year. It still brings tears to my eyes. I love this song and I know it has a huge story behind it thus that is why it is so powerful!
So excited to play this omg this is beautiful
Even though I play the trumpet, the low brass and percussion have my favorite part in this song
as a percussionist, percussion is my least cuz i kept messing up LMFAO
I am just playing this song in my band and I think it is the best so far.
ps. if you didn't know...this song was written about his school. it was desructed and rebuild.
:D
I played this song for Band camp and its the best song i ever played
All County 2010... oh, the memories (tpt)

So beautiful I played this in 8th grade and all discount
This really bring me back to my high school days we played this at festival, and it's the reason I'm a band director and performer now
our band gets to play it this year, which is my freshman yr....i love it soooo much
I play tuba and this is my favorite song by far
this song sounds like Jurassic Park. "nufff said

I love this song so much i played it first a few years ago and now i can actually understand the music and it's one of my favorite pieces of all time.

I'm doing a combination with the 8th grade band at my Spring Concert
Great piece, definitely one of my favorites, but is it just me, or should there be a horn rip at the very end to a high concert Bb.
this was definitely written for Jr. High type bands...not some of Hazo's best work by far. Little disappointed :(
Cool
