Snorkeling the US Virgin Islands National Park St John at Trunk Bay

- Believe it or not, Trunk Bay actually has an "underwater hiking trail" for snorkeling through its coral reef. The trail is a series of underwater plaques with various facts about coral, fish and the state of the reef.
Can these signs be seen from the top of water if we are just floating? how deep is it or far out is it? safe to bring my 5 year old with?
You could maybe see where the stone signs are on the bottom from the surface, but you won't be able to read them. They are typically 8-15 feet underwater, depending on the tides of course. The water conditions can be different each day, but count on at least some waves at the surface. My entire family are very strong swimmers and even I got caught off guard a few times. Unless your 5 year old is already an extremely strong swimmer I would suggest again taking him/her. There is still plenty to see from the surface though, coral on the bottom, fish, etc...
