Deus Ex Invisible War Retrospective

  • Continuing on with my Deus Ex Retrospective series we come to what might be considered the black sheep of the family. To most people who played and fell in love with the original Deus Ex at launch, Invisible war was something of a disappointment. And While I definitely had that initial reaction to it I'm here today to tell you that judged on it's own merits there's a lot to love about Alex Denton's journey through a dystopian cyberpunk world of conspiracies and intrigue.

    I actually love they handled the question of “which ending is canon” in Invisible War by saying “all three are” as none of them generally preclude the possibility of the others. As for the shift in JC’s personality to be more dispassionate and logical… what did you think would happen when he merged his consciousness with that of an AI?

    • @arkham666
      @arkham666  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was certainly one way to handle it. As I said at the start of the video the sequel to an open game like deus ex has a big problem in that it has to canonize certain choices. So just kinda saying all endings happened sorta gets around that.
      As far as JC becoming dispassionate, of course that's what would happen. But my point was the character I played in the first game would never have chosen to do that. Which brings us back around to the issue of mashing all the endings together. Some people may have played a JC who felt a return to the status quo was best for humanity or maybe felt Tracer Tongs ideas were too drastic. So on one hand everyone gets what they want, on the other we're all a little disappointed.

    • @Kenshiro3rd
      @Kenshiro3rd 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@arkham666 FUN FACT: they did it again for Mankind Divided. The canon ending of Human Revolution is all 4… Adam sent out all 3 messages then destroyed Panchaia, leading to his own death. The Adam you’re playing in Mankind Divided is HEAVILY implied to be a clone with implanted memories from a backup/download, and forged augments.

    • @arkham666
      @arkham666  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Kenshiro3rd yeah I have a video on MD too. Love the shit out of that game. You probably know about Adam's body being in the versalife vault too. I'm suspicious it could have been a double bluff but then square got greedy and wanted to make live service BS so we never got a conclusion to Adam's story. Though things are looking up for that now. :)

    The underrated sequel.
    Deus Ex and Human Revolution might be better, but Invisible War is utterly brilliant. It says something about the original DX trilogy when even the one people agree to be the weakest is fantastic. Really, all we need is a Thief 3 Gold/Sneaky Update-esque fanmade addon.

      I have something of a soft spot for black sheep games. I'm actually playing blood omen 2 now and getting the same feeling. Not a bad game overall just to a much lower standard than the others in the series. It's too bad invisible war couldn't be modded the same way deus ex could. I wonder what we would have got if it had been possible.

    Just completed the game. Actually on the contrary, I had taken the path of Helios merging with JC Denton in the first game and I was very much in line with the idea of all of humanity having a common consciousness. That was the ending that I actually kind of wanted as that seemed the happiest of all endings by far. So the game playthrough went very much the way I wanted to. So, I don't really have any hard feelings as such or any disappointments, the game in the end was very much satisfying for me.
    Great video by the way. Loved the retrospective!

    I think that something I enjoy about both Invisible War’s and Mankind Divided’s approach to the previous game’s ending, is that as a player, I had a really hard time picking an ending that felt right to me. For me, the endings of Deus Ex and Human Revolution are (brilliantly) a choice between a myriad of bad options. Because of that, in both games, I saved, played the ending I thought was best, but then reloaded and tried each option just to experience every ending. With that approach, Invisible War’s method of incorporating all the possible endings of Deus Ex actually felt like the most in line continuation of the Deus Ex story as I had experienced it, which felt really satisfying. I could see how it would have the opposite result for someone who really believed in their final singular choice for the first game, though.

    Greetings. I just played Invisible War again last year and earlier this summer to briefly forget the global pandemic. This game had most of the bells and whistles from the original Deus Ex despite smaller levels, subpar character development, streamlined item inventory, and frequent loading screens. Ironically, Invisible War is more relevant these days since the game also mirrors current events with a pandemic and an armed takeover of an entire city across the Atlantic.
    About the Omar ending, I can see why that one appeals to players. Alex Denton has been railroaded and manipulated by many factions and even the Dentons that he/she didn't have much freedom anymore if the player felt that doing jobs for those factions was unfulfilling. An option to fight *EVERYONE* would be welcome despite the hard work and numerous resources that must follow. I'll have to play that ending again soon.

    • @arkham666
      @arkham666  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah it's a game that shines despite it's faults. I really had a great time capturing the footage for this video, though there were a few bugs and crashes along the way. I feel the pandemic situation vis better captured in the 1st, "Deus Ex predicted it" is starting to feel as much of a meme as "Simpsons predicted it."

    You know, it's funny how merging with Helios is something you have a problem with. I never even considered any of the other options once I heard I could merge with an AI god, and seeing merged JC redeemed Invisible War for me by a lot. I agree with your sentiment, it's definitely a great game, and the only truly bad thing about it is that it isn't anywhere near as good as the first one. That and universal ammo.

    Why wouldn't an EMP bomb be able to counteract grey goo?

    • @arkham666
      @arkham666  ปีที่แล้ว

      You should probably ask Google. Remember the grey goo scenario is a hypothetical scenario about hypothetical nano bots of unspecified design. We have no idea if they'd work the same as regular robots and be sensitive to emp. Then we'd need a hypothetical emp from something other than a nuclear bomb. So it's not something to be thought on too heavily.
