Great review, as always. A lot of reviewers make apologies for this camera (no weather sealing, no stabilisation, only a single control wheel on the body etc) and completely miss the point. You celebrate its uniqueness and opportunity to do what it is intended to do: bring excitement and joy back to photography, something missing from pretty much all modern digital cameras.
Best overview of the 907x / CFV II 100C I've seen, Ted. I've been in the system since it was introduced several years ago and just got the new 100C. Yeah, everything you said is true. I use these backs all three ways ... including on a technical camera. The image renderings are simply sublime. It's the equivalent of, and in many ways, the superior to, Leica.
Nice overview, Ted. Like you, I have both the 907X and the X2D, having started with the 1000F a very long time ago. One thing I don't believe you mentioned is, with the XV adapter, the ease of mounting all of our old original V series lenses with these cameras. There are some limitations, of course, but Zeiss made some very good optics way back when and they still hold their own today. I've done some comparison shots with some of my CF and CFi lenses against my new XCDs -- sure glad I never sold mine!
I’ve been shooting with Hasselblad for decades, until switching to full-frame a few years ago. The X2D and this camera are a great reason to come back to my old love. The IQ is still unsurpassed, perhaps with the exception of Phase One.
Hello. This is a wonderful review of a fantastic camera, albeit pretty specialized and professional. I have recently started to use a digital camera after a lifetime of using a Leica standard, and a Leica m3. Due to defective eyesight, I have crossed over and selected a digital camera that could be controlled as simply as a barnack... a Leica T. The Hasselblad is technically a million miles away in terms of resolution, performance, etc. However, the interface is very similar to the Leica T: one power button, two rotating programmable rotary switches, one lens release button, one screen, all controlling the camera in the very same way. This interface, to me, before anything else, indicates the genius of these two brands. If we were about in a forest, the way you take pictures with the Hasselblad and me with the T, would be exactly the way Oskar Barnack envisaged it all these years ago, with only one (unfair) advantage: iso control. Thank you for the great work you do, it is greatly appreciated. Jean-Guy.
I like your reviews clearly understand how you describe and are visually perfect. although I cannot buy this camera, but known this camera and other high-end cameras for several decades. How beautifully designed the camera is. I like the right side handle with functional buttons and if there is a dummy handle left side, it was excellent to hold the camera with two hands and take pictures.
I just bought the 907x 50c about a month ago. Absolutely LOVE it! It's been a wonderful way for me to reconnect with photography, and a reason to get out my old 500CM.
I hear you. Actually, with this new 100C back you can shoot like it's 1963 again by setting a square crop factor when shooting on a 500 body. Also, Iif you use that 28mm lens (or the older, more costly 21mm) you can pretty much get the same feel as shooting with the old SWC!) The 100mp back now offers square croppers enough resolution for just about everything. I actually usually shoot 1:1 with these backs. It just feels better.
Great review Ted 🙏 with regards to the hot-shoe adapter you can get a Hasselblad 907X Optical Viewfinder. Ok it’s not an evf but wow certainly opens up the possibilities 😀
I cant imagine handholding this without IBIS as soon as the light drops even just a little bit. I own a sigma FPL with 61Mp and finding it incredibly difficult to handhold it and get perfecly sharp shot at what is usually normal shutter speeds. And then I also have a GFX 100s and found that the IBIS is so important to utilize such a sensor. In your next video, could you please cover this a bit more? At what shutter speeds can you handhold his camera at with a given focal length?
The IBIS on the X2D was a game changer for me since I often shoot handheld (I have had the X1D and the CFV 50C). If this had IBIS I might be tempted away from my X2D because I love the form factor and feel, but without it....not for me.
Looks like a nice camera, while it’s great that it can adapt to a film body, the cost really makes that impossible for many. At 100 mp the older V lenses are probably not sharp enough for a 100 mp digital sensor. I think Hasselblad should make a 6x6 digital back even if it has between 16 mp and 50 mp. It would be a great way to keep the cameras in use with the cost of film and the possibility of film ever being discontinued.
That would be endgame for me and my 503cx... if I could afford it. Regarding the cons, I understand there's just no physical space into either the 907x body or the CFV 100c back to fit an IBIS system, so one has to cope with that. However, I see no excuse for Hasselblad not to make a modular EVF for the CFV 100c. I still don't understand why they didn't do it for the 50c. Hell, Leica did that already! I'd love to see some Zeiss V lenses tested on this... The sharpest of those (most likely the 40mm CFE, the 100mm CF, the 180mm CF and the 250mm Superachromat) were able to keep up with the CFV II 50c back, provided you had focusing right (using an optical viewfinder + split-image focusing screen or focus peaking in Live View certainly helps here). Do they still with 100 MP?
Still waiting for a true 6x6 or 645 medium format digital option (other than PhaseOne). All these options from Hasselblad and Fuji are much closer to 35mm in sensor size than 645.
@theartofphotography Ted, I think you'll find that the PC connector for flash (and it doesn't stand for "Personal Computer"!) is more traditional than the hot shoe. It certainly pre-dates it. Somewhere in my box of good junk is a SunPak flash with a PC cable that can be plugged in to either the PC socket on the camera or the flash foot for cameras with a hot shoe. My first SLR didn't even have a cold shoe! The camera, a Praktica Nova 1B, had X and F sockets for electronic and bulb flash. As I recall the F fired just before the shutter was fully open to allow for the few milliseconds it took for the fire to take hold in the bulb. Cameras like the one reviewed and the X2D are only for my dreams, unfortunately... 😞I can live vicariously through channels like yours, as well as picking up valuable tips. You're never too old to learn!
Thank you for letting us know that this particular camera does not have image stabilization. I was about to click "buy" but now I know to purchase the X2D instead because it does have images stabilization.
Yes the form factor. Makes medium format street art capable. I can just get variable hand grip accesory and long strap. Price similiar. I prefer this cam ie leica m
Thanks Ted, this has been the best review I've watched on the camera, appreciate that. Question, is it possible to shoot at lower than 100MP resolution and if so how's it look? Would also love to see some work with the older camera and lenses. Thanks, d
Questions: How do the Hassy lenses compare to the old Zeiss lenses? With the new format, the lens you have on is roughly what: like an 80mm, or a bit wider than that? The whole thing looks to me like a possible step up from full format DSL's, particularly in handling the camera.
I really wanterd the 907x 50c. I kept placing it in my cart and removing it. I would have dreams of owning the camera. I guess at the end of the day I just couldn't afford it plus a lens. This next model looks awesome! Maybe I can afford to pick up a 50c at a discount. Great review!
Thanks. The experience of shooting with a 500 series. How to set it up, does the camera detect the shooter or we have to keep it open and use a shooter in the back etc.
Excellent video as always. I love your content and style. It would be great if you can cover how to connect studio strobes to the 500cm+50C back, and 907+CF(or adapted lens) combos. There’s very little out there that shows how it should be done.
It’s reminiscent of the SWC… and great to totally integrate with the old film cameras. Would be interested to see some digital shots done with an original SWC - specifically looking out for ‘Italian flag’ edge issues…
It's alluring for sure. I already have the 500 c/m and wish that I could just buy the cfv 100 digital back by itself. But I don't see that buying option yet anywhere.
Hey Ted,Great review of the Hasselblad.I found since I started using mirrorless cameras I tend to use the back digital display to align & to focus my shots and because of this reason I'm warming up to the idea of using the 907x instead of the X2D,reason being,I still have my 503 CX & 500CM with pretty much all lenses which brings me to this question. What method or methods are used that you know of to operate remote flash using the 907X on a 500CM body?
Hi Ted, as you have both the X2D and 907x I have a question that is important to me and no one mentions it, but I think I saw in one review briefly on the camera back that the 907x has a live view histogram. Is this correct, or perhaps I may have seen them in playback mode.
I wouldn't say that phase detection AF with face detect, 1TB of internal storage and better flash compatibility are marginal , but if they are to you the 50mp version is still a pretty good camera ;-)
When connected to a computer, do the camera’s internal SSD and CF card look like external disks (i.e., can you simplify drag and drop the desired files from the camera to the computer)?
@@theartofphotography thank you. I’m currently using Leica cameras, including the M6 TTL film body and the digital CL, SL2, and M11 bodies (I’ll soon get an M11 Monochrom) and an Arca-Swiss 4x5 camera (w/a 6x9 roll film back). However, I’ve always wanted a Hassy as a stand-alone camera. Their new digital backs make them even more compelling because they work on the 907 digital and 500 series film cameras and I imagine could work on my view camera. Definitely food for thought.
Have the CM system with most of the V lenses . I would love to see the ins and outs using back on my system . Lots of V images . The question i have is the dust issue on that sensor with my moving mirror in the CM body . Thanks this great review as always .
It could be much better. > film size sensor > 6x4.5, 6x6, 6x7, (and 6x9, 6x12, 6x17 with in body stitching) > Monitor on top compatible with sun shade, magnifying hood, prism viewfinder > trade some internal storage for higher frame rate 10fps~ (20+ at lower resolution?) > higher max ISO >IBIS!
Already possible with the 'new' Sinar P3s and Cambo MV series cameras and of course many other legacy makes via third party adaptor plates as it's effectively a direct replacement for the original Hasselblad 'V' & 'C' series film backs!
Have they changed the firmware to allow the primary function in AV to be exposure compensation or do you still have to hold the button? I want to be able to use the lens ring for aperture and the dial for EV comp with the scondary for ISO.
I have a question that I haven’t seen anyone ask yet and that is, what if you already have the 907x body with the 50 mp sensor, can you just purchase the new 100mp sensor?
Thank you so much for the informative video. I was wondering if one could use the front (Lens) of this camera wit the C500 "Film Back" Hasselblad? I like these XCV lenses better! Cheers!
I love what Hasselblad is doing but also am a bit disappointed about their lack of communication. Maybe it is just me - but I would have probably stayed with the X system if I had known about the plans to extend it …😅
I basically live next to Hasselblads building here in Göteborg/Sweden… but I’ve never tested one. I wouldn’t dare to try if I come in there with a Nikon to compare 😅
Internal storage should have been the default, there is really no excuse! The cost and the space is so small nowadays. Actually my 2000s point and shoot had a bit of internal storage that had saved many walking sessions that I may have forgotten the SD card on the reader. I don't understand why companies stopped offering this very basic but useful feature 🤷
Saw this announcement on Hasselblad earlier today. Hopefully, this may make the 50 cheaper on the second hand market while everyone who uses those upgrades to this one, ha ha. At £6500 UK price, its way too rich for my blood. But I'd love to use one with my 501CM.
I wonder what a photographer would say to this question: Why would anyone pick this over the Normal Hasselblad 100mp, x2d. Or maybe the Fujifilm. These all seem similar in price. Wouldn’t people choose the already normal looking cameras?
Incredible how a machine with such a retro design has the most modern graphic interface of the entire photographic market!

I’m watching your review on a big screen and without a doubt your reviews are top notch. NICE!!
What are the odds that you and GxAce drop a video about the same camera as the same time. What a treat.

Great video. As well as the amazing camera, my eye was also drawn to that Doxa Sub 300 Carbon White Pearl. Very nice!
While lacking an EVF, Hasselblad does offer a clip-on optical finder with frame lines for 21, 30 and 45mm lenses.

About the lack of EVF, putting the back on the vintage film camera gives a top view via de mirror. That could be a solution.

Why would anyone pick this over the Normal Hasselblad 100mp, x2d. Or maybe the Fujifilm. These all seem similar in price. Wouldn’t people choose the already normal looking cameras?
Cool Doxa...
You beat Matt Granger to the upload by 10 seconds 😀
Hey Ted is that new hot shoe compatible with the CFV ii 50C?
Perhaps it is compatibel, but functions as a coldshoe. I use the viewfinder assesoire with a coldshoe…
No, unfortunately. Where the new hot-shoe adapter attaches to the CFV 100C is a new feature only on the 100C version.
