Hugh, I've been following, both, you and Kandao for awhile now. After the Qoocam 8k and the Enterprise version. I was hesitant to pick up the Qoocak 8k because of the infinity focus issue. But the Qoocam 3 Ultra has seemed to iron out all the issues. I ordered one and am excited to start using it. Thinking of car rigs, and back pack rigs. Glad you're still here, sharing info on 360 cameras and best workflow practices!

Another great video! Also thanks for featuring my timelapse shot. For getting the best in-camera audio, my current solution is use fan off and external power, it can run quite long time(much longer than using battery&fan off) and stay silent aud capturing good quality audio. Just my 2 cents. Keep up the great work Hugh!

@@jayes5066 Thank you for answering my question. But Gaussian splattering doesn't look good, to be honest, and you don't move a lot when you're in a virtual car. I think regular video will be good enough. I have tried some 360 virtual drives on my headset, and they feel so real compared to those CG ones.

These specs are amazing ESPECIALLY the HEAT TEST. I am presently using the X3 and was thinking about upgrading but the X4 isn't worth it so this Q3U sounds much better than the X4. However in my personal opinion the X1/2/3/4 streamline form factor just feels practical and simple and grown accustomed to it. Hopefully the X5 doesn't take another 2 years to launch or the Q4U gets the streamline design also. Great video, thanks for sharing the information

The color is HLG - 10bit intended that way and you need to add LUT or color grade it. If you want drag and drop solution- this is not the right camera for you.

I have a DjI Mic2 that I use with my X4. I have heard that it is also compatible with the Ultra. This would resolve having to choose between video length and sound quality.
Very good video, it's a shame I'm late and I missed the discount. I don't think they'll release another 360 Insta camera anytime soon. The truth is that I was waiting for them to release a 2nd generation of a 360 with a 1-inch sensor but for now we will have to wait. Even seeing this I'm still hesitating whether to go for the X4 or the 3 Ultra. Keep it up.
There was a reason why GoPro removed the GPS sensor and Insta360 doesn't have it. It's because the camera can have more internal chassis room for e.g bigger battery or on the flip side the body can be made smaller and lighter. In my opinion, an action camera is better controlled from your a wrist remote like a watch and that controller can have all the additional sensors. Either way the specs on this new Q3U are amazing and they have just raised the bar for 360 cameras. I hope they either change to a streamline form factor or remove things like GPS to make the camera smaller and give us a wrist remote instead.
If Qoocam keeps up this good work, they will definitely take away some of Insta360 market shares. Which is good, competition is great. And if Insta360 takes another 2 years just put AI and a bigger battery in the X3 and rename it X4 then Qoocam will definitely be a future force in 360 action camera world.
Thank you for another in depth video. I do not see any info on the Developer platform (open android system). I am curious about multiple camera control and possible frame or gen-lock between multiple cameras. I would at least look into it for multiple camera control
15:45 How do you have both external power and external storage? I see what looks like a SanDisk SSD, but those aren't batteries. What are you referring to there? Where is the external power coming from?
It is a USB-C splitter - 1 for SSD and 1 for power. Ask Kandao they will suggest some brand for you. Don't use mine - it is not official - totally DIY lol
@@hughhou Kandao has never responded to any communications I've ever sent them. Not once. That's why I've been hesitant to buy another one of their cameras. You're a very good reviewer and I've followed you for years now, but one thing I've noticed you never discuss in reviews is customer service and support. You have a relationship with these camera manufacturers, but if you ever tried sending them an anonymous support request/email, you could let your viewers know how long (if ever) it takes to get a reply or any kind of assistance. My impression of Kandao is that they are totally unreachable, zero support, and if there's ever a problem, a regular customer is out of luck, regardless of what the warranty says. Re the splitter, that's a good idea. I didn't know those existed. Thank you! You can actually use most Insta360 or GoPro accessories on this camera as well. It is not much a different. You can buy GoPro to 1/4 mount converter - but most Insta360 is in 1/4 so all your old accoessoies should just work
How do you make a 10K VR180 with TWO Qoocam 3 Ultra? How do you sync them? Do you need to put them at a certain distance? Is there any tutorial? It would be cool to see some DIY project.
Yes. I need to sync them. I was travelling making my own Spatial Films and for brands. Just got back for the holiday. I will work on all the tutorials - sorry we are slow b/c lots of research and custome mod we need to performance and make sure the quality up our standard :)

Yes livestream is not here yet. The battery remove mode with silence fan - not many people know about it. Haha you have some experience with this camera.
Meta Quest just release that feature. All we need is Meta develop a player that can handle 360 - that is on the headset. USB-C to HDMI or vice verse is possible now in latest Meta update
great update, +: seeing differences between (14bit) 24MP and (10bit) 96MP, yet to analyze further. Initially my gut feeling was 24 color looked better, previous fw. but also have seen some ? conversion issues perhaps, need to investigate. Would love 96MP 9EV bracket 14bit colour as an AEB option like Z1. Apparently native LUTs are on the way for video. On interval, this is great for Google maps but now need GPX file output and '0' sec interval like Qoocam3 for faster capture (when on bike/ scooter). Not sure if 'timelapse' is any better but I doubt it. PS, Luma does not yet accept 360input for GS unfortunately, looking for good alternatives right now
Thank you! 14-bit will require qual bayer 4 pixels HDR merge so it is only can reach 24MP unfortunately. So it is 14-BIT or 96MP - but not both of them.
Thank you for all this awesome information - SO helpful! Can you comment on the mobile app at all please? I notice you don’t show it in the video and i’ve had problems in the past with connectivity - is that still an issue with the ultra? I have both the x4 and q3u on my desk unopened - I want it to be the q3u that I go for (based on your and Mic’s info) but need confidence the mobile app will work reliably ‘on set’. I don’t need anything fancy - just solid monitoring and setting changes with sufficiently close to real time response to guage what the setting changes have done. Out would you advocate only using the camera screen? Thanks as always!
Mobile app is the weak point of Kandao but it is getting better on each updates. Also the Kandao Mobile app support HDR live preview if you have a HDR devices - like the new iPhone. So it is unique in a way that is different front Insta360. What you want is def enough. The connection is not related to the app but your phone bluetooth connection - it will be the same as Insta360.
@@hughhou Thanks for the speedy reply. On my Insta360 pro and one inch the app connection works a million times better than on my Q3 5.7 - assumed it’s the app but maybe it’s a faulty camera? A friend tried their android phone with it (I have iPhone) and could barely connect so all. Good to know that in theory the mobile app should work with Ultra for the basics…. 1. It it always on :) / 2. It is always better to edit in laptop - as phone only support source footage up to 4K including the Insta360 brand. So all 360 edit should be done in laptop no matter what camera you use.
Sure! This is almost 12K with the new firmware. It is always nice to crop out some of the edges to get out of some CA and flare problem but getting 10K is soild and close to 12k is possible. I need to wait for their firmware of course

I would be happy if you could clarify me a doubt perhaps trivial but of great importance I think for many: for a VR viewer with XR2 chipset (like the PICO G3) is it better to record (with the Qoocam 3 Ultra) a 360 video in 8K / 30 FPS (to be then reduced in resolution to make it compatible with the viewer) or directly a 5.7K video but with 60 FPS? So is it better to prioritize resolution or frames per second when recording the video for XR2? Thank you for your precious help! Lorenzo
I personally will prioritize frame rate than resolution. But that is me. You do see image will look softer. To me, low frame rate is a problem. Need to address. Resolution, most people can not tell. So in your case, I would shoot 5.7K in 60fps. But do test and find out.
It’s a tough one… I want to invest in a 360 camera to record dj sets (60 min +)… but the fans interfering with the ambient/crowd noise is a potential issue… does the insta360 really overheat that easily? I heard having the right SD card can help with overheating?
Not easy just has 30 - 40 min recording limit depends on your shooting environment - avoid directly under the Sun the Insta360 X4 should be able to keep going.
Yes absolutely! The shadows is not important and HLG can easy boost the shadow back in post by reduce the contrast curve. The best way to grade it in my opinion. I might design some lut base on this settings. Hold tight!
I read somewhere that you recommended the X4 over the Qoocam for more action intensive shots. I intend to use whichever camera I purchase as a running camera from multiple angles and vantages. Up to 3m with a selfie stick while moving. Do you feel there is a clear winner for this type of content? I may wait to see if there is an X5 or rumored DJI 360, or even new GoPro.
Maybe the new DJI? Just joking. X4 seem to be more stable on a long stick - not because it has better stabilization but just simply lighter - lot lighter than Qoocam 3 Ultra. So your pole flex less mean more stable. But if it is short and thick pole - then they are pretty much the same.
I've noticed some frame "glitching" about every 15-16 frames in playback. It's more noticeable if I zoom in. Cannot figure out which setting or playback function is causing it. Any thoughts on what it might be?
Qoocam 3 Ultra? Sound like encoder bug. Are you shooting in DR Boost - are you using SD card instead of internal storage. SD card is not fast enough and it will glitch as I state in this video
@hughhou This is recording in 10bit, DR Boost turned off and recording to the internal SSD. I confirmed it's still there with the latest firmware as well. Hardly noticeable at the standard wide reframes, but when I crop way in, which is common for my use case, it becomes more noticeable.

I don't know if you upscale to 8K - as there is AI variable there. In low light RS might still be better. But compare "without" AI, Q3 is sharper. If you are familiar with RS 1" - I will suggest you stick to it as your outdoor shot has lots of details just require a bigger sensor to handle
did you saw lower temperature and/or lower fan noise when recording on q3u on external ssd vs internal storage recording (as the heat generated from solid state storage is now external, or is the heat from internal storage negligible compared to heat generated by cpu and camera sensor inside the q3u ? i remember that heat from fast sd card was quite high)
Okay since you ask, I forgot to mention 1 very important thing: turn the fan off (slient mode) with external SSD and external power will last the camera forever as storage and battery is what generating heat. That is another way to have forever slient recording - for music show and performance.
@@hughhou these are the useful findings you may want to share, as i think overheat on camera sensor degrade image quality at sensor readout ( increased noise) , so lower heat is always good ;) should we go up to the point of removing the internal battery and letting the battery door open to vent out the cpu and sensor heat from natural convection ? thanks for sharing your experience and hacks

Dang I did not... wait what is the problem? Why everyone having issue on photo stitching and I DO NOT... I honest never see any stitching issue. So what is the issue? Also, you can just stitch in PTGui on this camera. You get raw fisheye not like Insta360.
@@hughhou it will not allow me to tag you in the post. I sent you a link via Facebook messenger to the original post I made with the issues. I have reached out to customer service and they don’t have a definite answer. For some people, they may not care, but if you’re trying to use these images in a high resolution headset, the problem stick out like a sore thumb. They said they were going to work on a calibration procedure like they have for the QooCam 3 which I’m hoping fixes the issue
It is me not them lol. So the camera is mount on a 3 meter pole and poling it out of the building - so in 360 you look like you are floating in the air (pretty nut - that shot only look good in VR or Vision Pro). But since the pole will flex as the camera is not light, the wind will make the camera move. That is what you are seeing there. Timelapse DNG has NO stabilization as it is just individual DNG without stabilization. So you need your platform super solid. For us, we choose creative instead of stabilization here. But very good eye and attention to details. We love viewers can point out problem and this is this community for!

thank you for your helpful review , I already ordered this camera after your first review and waiting for it to arrive . you mentioned that we can develop some apps for it , it makes me think about the potential of this camera for my job . I do aerial photogrammetry and do some test with insta360 one x for some small area project . lack of resolution makes it hard to get acceptable result , but with qoocam 96mp photos , things might change . I hope that I can make a program for it to get GPS data from RTK receiver and make it much accurate to make a low range accurate photogrammety camera for my job.
Wow that sound really interesting! I doubt the resolution is there still. But maybe with lidar and G-splat you can fill up the gap. Love to learn more as well. That is the world I will eventually want to get there hehe.
Overheating had been the bane of my existence. I use a 360 on a boom at the back of my kayak and let it run constantly, cuz you never know when you're gonna get a fish and you want to catch that surprise. Insta X2 was overheating after half hour. I switched to Max and it's actually pretty good. I've recorded 11 hour sessions in the spring, fall and winter and about 6 hours in dead summer without issue. I just think the video quality is lacking
Qoocam 3 Ultra with the latest firmware WILL NOT overheat even under the hot sun. There is fan inside. So you will be good on this camera and prefect for your usecase - set it forget about it.

I also have the RS 1" and thinking of switching if for no other reason the heat problem I am constantly fighting with the RS 1". I need low light also, but how low can the Q3 go is the question. It might be acceptable.
Hi Hugh, love your content, great video! I just got the QooCam 3 Ultra and I am NOT getting the same quality you are getting here, not sure if I am doing something wrong, but there are some real issues with this camera that need to be pointed out, starting with the need to install the Android app on your mac, as macs do not see the file system of the QC3U, but the really annoying part is that I am getting way better image quality from my X4 than from the QC3U, I get way better dynamic range on HDR shooting on the X4 vs the HLG-10bit, and the extra-step to stitch the image and export before using it on Insta360 studio adds to the workflow.
Yes Android file transfer is needed for Mac to use Andorid based device - like Meta Quest. I just assume most Mac users has it as most folks has Meta Quest. For the HDR mode in X4 is not real HDR - and full artifacts - not a mode I will recommand to use and even Insta360 wont advice to use that mode. But it is strange you get better result. Are you shooting at 8K?
@@hughhou yes in 8k, but I realized what happened! The HLG 10bit can only be used at lower ISOs 100 and below, so if you are not in a bright environment then you’ll crush the shadows. Only 8bit mode alllows to use higher ISOs

We have no idea if One RS 1" is coming at all - I am just teasing there but no info so far. If Insta360 is going to launch something it is One RS turns. But for 360 mod to come out will be a while. As traditionally, the mod is 1 year or more after the release of the brain unit. Insta360 compete with GoPro and DJI first so make sense the next camera will be a 2D not 360.

Thanks for this video. I had ordered an X4 last night and had just enough time to cancel and consider this camera too. The timing could not have been better. Quick question if you're aware - for how long can you record 8k 360 onto the 128gb internal storage at production quality?
With 150mbps bitrate it should last for about 90min of high quality recording But I wish they increase bitrate higher for better quality and lower the compression artifacts

Hi Hugh, Is it possible to turn a 2d content to an immersive experience for headsets using software alone or do i need to have shot it on a VR camera that is 3d or 360 first? New to this and am waiting to buy either a 3d 180 or 360 like the QC3 Ultra.
It is better to shoot it right now as AI is not there yet. Mostly because there is no enough sample data. Literally AI can only train on my video lol. Also, AI can not reach more than 1080P resolution as the GPU limit unless you have A100 so learn capture is still easier and way cheaper.
This is the second video I watched of yours and I’d like to congratulate you, they’re excellent. What I did noticed on the timelapse section was the buildings were wobbling. Any idea what that’s about given the camera static and if those are solution?
@@hughhou Ah, I see, thank you for finding the time to explain. I’ve just ordered one. My Insta 360 X4 is so bad I think it is faulty but Insta are just giving me the run around and sending the same standard email. In daylight condition it’s worse than my x3.
would definitely choose it if they had more accessories that an action camera should really have. For example, a chest strap, or less preferably even just a head strap. I want a 360 cam for filming fishing videos on the beach so its disappointing they do not have good options. even the X4 can be mounted on a insta360 backpack but all this seems to have is a 120 stick.
I still lol. Testing the firemware now but still like that -0.5 or -1 EV look. Even DR Boost only give you 14-stop of DR and the sun is way hotter in 360. Think about even RED with 16-stop the sun will clip so it is always smart to reduce EV a bit to just keep all info inside. The camera in daylight is surpirsingly clear - so raising the shadow won't be any issue. In low light that set it back to 0 EV
My insta360 oneR just died in the pool whilst filming. RIP. So now do I buy an x4 or a one Rs 1 inch edition. Or wait until the ridiculously teased canon 180/360 that is supposed to release this year 🤷🏻♂️
Ownig the Qoocam 3 Ultra, I have the impression that the debayer algorithm is up for improvement on video I would have expected less greeny, reddy and bluey pixels .. We do not have access to RAW The pixels are not really "clean". Don't get me wrong it is a good camera, but I am not as knowledgeable as Hugh. Maybe he knows ... Is there a resonon by the way, why there is no comparison between Canon dual fisheye and 3 Ultra ? I would be VERY interested to see that, as the 3 Ultra has the capability to debayer 4 pixels to one video pixel, as the Canon is not ? I understand that the lens is key, but (bayer pixels/video pixel) should account for something right ?
Quad bayer is SONY sensor tech lol. Canon do not do that. Kandao use SONY like sensor I assume (not confirm but same as Insta360 I believe? GoPro make their own sensor) Also, it won't be fair as Canon sensor is soooooo much bigger than Qoocam 3 Ultra. Honestly, R5 II sensor blow everyone out of water (including the latest SONY) but for some reason everyone hate Canon... Internet is a strange place.

In one of your recent videos you showed that x4 video are a lot sharper if processed with premiere instead of insta360 studio. Do you think it would be closer to qoocam result this way ?
at 22.34 we see q3u workflow output is h265 100mbit/s 30fps vs x4 workflow output h265 200mbit/s 29.97fps can't q3u workflow also output h265 200mbit/s 30fps to be replayed internally (not with pc link cable) on meta quest 2 and 3 headsets ? thanks
So Qoocam acutally has High Mid and Low instead of letting you set the number. Here is the thing - the source is 150Mbps so artifactually up to 200Mbps won't be good for the output. Insta360 X4 source is 100Mbps - and no idea why they allow people to pick 200Mbps. So for Quest, you bitrate should be 80Mbps - not 200Mbps (can't play it back - way too high). So bitrate is one thing, the source quality is way more important. That shot I am just comparing fps - I might pick the wrong Q3Ultra render to compare lol.
Higher bitrate intermediates can make sense to reduce generational loss, particularly if using simpler encoders like hardware encoders in faster modes. Twice as high might be excessive though, unless switching to something like I-frame only (e.g. ProRes). At some point you'd just reproduce prior compression artifacts. Side note, 29.97 isn't cinema. It's USA colour TV, for historical reasons, and was always a mismatch for film (which led to devices reconstructing 24/1.001 from 60/1.001, while the source was often 24). Many cameras conflate them also. All HDMI displays should accept either, simply because it's within the margin they can sync to. The main thing to run into problems is computers that don't adjust their output rates; e.g. 90Hz VR headsets will stutter with both 24fps or 60fps source material, causing users to request 72 or 120 modes. Stutter is far more disturbing in VR than small flat screens, but so is low frame rates, and 60 is low.
Tell me pls how does Qoocam 3 Ultra work with the QooCam app on the phone? I used the latest version of the QooCam app with the QooCam 8K camera during my last trip and the app still worked poorly. It constantly disconnected from the camera and in order to connect the app to the camera, I constantly had to manipulate it. I think you understand what I'm talking about. I also wanted to ask you if the video blurs after long shooting on the Qoocam 3 Ultra? On the QooCam 8K camera this was a problem and many users came to the conclusion that this happens because the camera heats up, which leads to blurring of the picture. Have you noticed anything like this?
Would two Insta360 X4 side by side, 8k mode, on a tripod, with a distance of 64mm work for 3d stereo 360 ? :) Make and experiment. Might work only with 14700k CPU, via SteamLink streaming to VR goggles. That would be 2 x 8k playback.
The whole reason insta 360 was better than gopro was the software Saying this device is better but u need to use the insta360 software or divinci resolve makes this entire product not investment worthy The whole point for hobbyists and amateurs buying a 360 cam vs a action camera is the software and reframing etc fast and simple etc I would rather wait for insta360 to see this product and surpass it next year Or just buy an action camera But fantastic review tysm
yes, fast and easy reframing/editing (maybe on phone as well) is important.. BUT: many 360cams sofar put out a video image that is not that great (reframed, zoomed in) - some 150US$ Action-Cams look better.. so i want every more of image quality in an 360cam i can get, even when easy handling and stiching is not that easy anymore
The Qoocam 3 Ultra is a great camera, I feel it is like an upgrade from my X4 because I use it solely for 360 VR Video creation. However the only downside now is the lack of accesoires like Utility frame and Diving case. When it could have those available it would be a 100% replacement from my X4.
How is the experience of viewing the output quality in meta quast 3 of this camera compared to the Insta 360 pro 2 camera? Both cameras shoot 360 videos in 8k quality 30f... Comparing the output between these two cameras(Qoocam 3 Ultra vs insta 360 pro 2 camera ) is important for many clients... I don't want to buy insta pro 2 the old and more expensive camera. Other insta 360 cameras are not satisfactory either. I want to know your experience... My customers are not satisfied with the output quality displayed on the meta quest 3 glasses

One reason is that a 180 camera has a lens that sticks out from the face of the camera. Without this, 180 is physically impossible. On the other hand, if we settle for something less than 180, you could put two on the back spaced eye distance apart, and have pretty good 140 to 160 3D. That would be enough for the Apple headset.

X4 weights 203g without it's 2290mAh battery. Q3U weights 296g without it's smaller 2280mAh battery which makes it 45.81% heavier. Additionally the X4 is 8.92% bigger by volume. So the Q3U is smaller by volume and has a smaller batter but 45% heavier. Wow! What did they stuff into that camera? Since you got a free camera, @hughhou make a year down video let's see the insides of the Q3U. Let's vote for a teardown video with thumbs up on this comment.
I am not smart enough for tear it down lol. That require some enginnering skill I do not have. They have GPS, livestream module and internally storage. The chip I hear it is bigger as it need to be powerful to process all those data.
I reckon they stuffed in a lot more glass for those nearly 40% bigger image sensors (1/1.7" vs 1/2"), likely a ceramic antenna for the GPS receiver, a metal chassis and most importantly an actual heatsink for the cooling system (which also has ducting and a fan). As for 2.29 vs 2.28 Ah, that difference in nominal numbers is irrelevant (individual battery variance is larger).
Update: New Firmware V1.0.2.6 solved the issue I had with V1.0.1.33. So far I found two software bugs (V1.0.1.33) with my new Qoocam 3 Ultra, it happens if I expose with the camera and with the App: 1) AEB, with the following settings the 1st Exposure does not use the adjusted ISO. Exposure M: Time: Auto / ISO: 100 / EV 0 / Exposure Max: Auto / WB 5200K -> 1st Exposure is NOT at ISO 100, 2nd Exposure is at 100 ISO, 3rd Exposure is at 100 ISO. 2) Photo mode sometimes saves a stitched DNG. Camera is set to Exposure M, if I set Exposure Time to Auto I get two the usual 2 circular fisheye images, if I set an Exposure Time (for example 1/1000s) I get a stitched equirectangular DNG. Any ideas ? I googled and searched here in the comments, but found no report about that. Remark: Would be nice if the bracketing would offer -4 EV.

Hugh, I've been following, both, you and Kandao for awhile now. After the Qoocam 8k and the Enterprise version. I was hesitant to pick up the Qoocak 8k because of the infinity focus issue. But the Qoocam 3 Ultra has seemed to iron out all the issues. I ordered one and am excited to start using it. Thinking of car rigs, and back pack rigs.

For getting the best in-camera audio, my current solution is use fan off and external power, it can run quite long time(much longer than using battery&fan off) and stay silent aud capturing good quality audio. I think regular video will be good enough. I have tried some 360 virtual drives on my headset, and they feel so real compared to those CG ones.

These specs are amazing ESPECIALLY the HEAT TEST. I am presently using the X3 and was thinking about upgrading but the X4 isn't worth it so this Q3U sounds much better than the X4. However in my personal opinion the X1/2/3/4 streamline form factor just feels practical and simple and grown accustomed to it. Hopefully the X5 doesn't take another 2 years to launch or the Q4U gets the streamline design also. Great video, thanks for sharing the information

The color is HLG - 10bit intended that way and you need to add LUT or color grade it. If you want drag and drop solution- this is not the right camera for you.

I have a DjI Mic2 that I use with my X4. I have heard that it is also compatible with the Ultra. This would resolve having to choose between video length and sound quality.

I don't think they'll release another 360 Insta camera anytime soon. The truth is that I was waiting for them to release a 2nd generation of a 360 with a 1-inch sensor but for now we will have to wait.

There was a reason why GoPro removed the GPS sensor and Insta360 doesn't have it. It's because the camera can have more internal chassis room for e.g bigger battery or on the flip side the body can be made smaller and lighter. In my opinion, an action camera is better controlled from your a wrist remote like a watch and that controller can have all the additional sensors. Either way the specs on this new Q3U are amazing and they have just raised the bar for 360 cameras. I hope they either change to a streamline form factor or remove things like GPS to make the camera smaller and give us a wrist remote instead.

If Qoocam keeps up this good work, they will definitely take away some of Insta360 market shares. Which is good, competition is great. And if Insta360 takes another 2 years just put AI and a bigger battery in the X3 and rename it X4 then Qoocam will definitely be a future force in 360 action camera world.

Thank you for another in depth video. I do not see any info on the Developer platform (open android system). I am curious about multiple camera control and possible frame or gen-lock between multiple cameras. I would at least look into it for multiple camera control

15:45 How do you have both external power and external storage? I see what looks like a SanDisk SSD, but those aren't batteries. What are you referring to there? Where is the external power coming from?
It is a USB-C splitter - 1 for SSD and 1 for power. Ask Kandao they will suggest some brand for you. Don't use mine - it is not official - totally DIY lol
@@hughhou Kandao has never responded to any communications I've ever sent them. Not once. That's why I've been hesitant to buy another one of their cameras. You're a very good reviewer and I've followed you for years now, but one thing I've noticed you never discuss in reviews is customer service and support. You have a relationship with these camera manufacturers, but if you ever tried sending them an anonymous support request/email, you could let your viewers know how long (if ever) it takes to get a reply or any kind of assistance. My impression of Kandao is that they are totally unreachable, zero support, and if there's ever a problem, a regular customer is out of luck, regardless of what the warranty says.
Re the splitter, that's a good idea. I didn't know those existed. So you're using something like this and then just connecting SSD + battery into it?

Thank you! You can actually use most Insta360 or GoPro accessories on this camera as well. It is not much a different. You can buy GoPro to 1/4 mount converter - but most Insta360 is in 1/4 so all your old accoessoies should just work

Yes. I need to sync them. I was travelling making my own Spatial Films and for brands. Just got back for the holiday. I will work on all the tutorials - sorry we are slow b/c lots of research and custome mod we need to performance and make sure the quality up our standard :)

Yes livestream is not here yet. The battery remove mode with silence fan - not many people know about it. Haha you have some experience with this camera.

Meta Quest just release that feature. All we need is Meta develop a player that can handle 360 - that is on the headset. USB-C to HDMI or vice verse is possible now in latest Meta update

great update, +: seeing differences between (14bit) 24MP and (10bit) 96MP, yet to analyze further. Initially my gut feeling was 24 color looked better, previous fw. but also have seen some ? conversion issues perhaps, need to investigate. Would love 96MP 9EV bracket 14bit colour as an AEB option like Z1. Apparently native LUTs are on the way for video. On interval, this is great for Google maps but now need GPX file output and '0' sec interval like Qoocam3 for faster capture (when on bike/ scooter). Not sure if 'timelapse' is any better but I doubt it. PS, Luma does not yet accept 360input for GS unfortunately, looking for good alternatives right now
Thank you! 14-bit will require qual bayer 4 pixels HDR merge so it is only can reach 24MP unfortunately. So it is 14-BIT or 96MP - but not both of them.
Thank you for all this awesome information - SO helpful! Can you comment on the mobile app at all please? I notice you don’t show it in the video and i’ve had problems in the past with connectivity - is that still an issue with the ultra? I have both the x4 and q3u on my desk unopened - I want it to be the q3u that I go for (based on your and Mic’s info) but need confidence the mobile app will work reliably ‘on set’. I don’t need anything fancy - just solid monitoring and setting changes with sufficiently close to real time response to guage what the setting changes have done. Out would you advocate only using the camera screen? Thanks as always!
Mobile app is the weak point of Kandao but it is getting better on each updates. Also the Kandao Mobile app support HDR live preview if you have a HDR devices - like the new iPhone. So it is unique in a way that is different front Insta360. What you want is def enough. The connection is not related to the app but your phone bluetooth connection - it will be the same as Insta360.
@@hughhou Thanks for the speedy reply. On my Insta360 pro and one inch the app connection works a million times better than on my Q3 5.7 - assumed it’s the app but maybe it’s a faulty camera? A friend tried their android phone with it (I have iPhone) and could barely connect so all. Good to know that in theory the mobile app should work with Ultra for the basics…. 1. It it always on :) / 2. It is always better to edit in laptop - as phone only support source footage up to 4K including the Insta360 brand. So all 360 edit should be done in laptop no matter what camera you use.

Sure! This is almost 12K with the new firmware. It is always nice to crop out some of the edges to get out of some CA and flare problem but getting 10K is soild and close to 12k is possible. I need to wait for their firmware of course

That I need to test lol. Resolution is better but we need to see color science. DNG8 mode allow outdoor shooting so that is already better than Z1.

I would be happy if you could clarify me a doubt perhaps trivial but of great importance I think for many: for a VR viewer with XR2 chipset (like the PICO G3) is it better to record (with the Qoocam 3 Ultra) a 360 video in 8K / 30 FPS (to be then reduced in resolution to make it compatible with the viewer) or directly a 5.7K video but with 60 FPS? So is it better to prioritize resolution or frames per second when recording the video for XR2? Thank you for your precious help! Lorenzo
I personally will prioritize frame rate than resolution. But that is me. You do see image will look softer. To me, low frame rate is a problem. Need to address. Resolution, most people can not tell. So in your case, I would shoot 5.7K in 60fps. But do test and find out.

It’s a tough one… I want to invest in a 360 camera to record dj sets (60 min +)… but the fans interfering with the ambient/crowd noise is a potential issue… does the insta360 really overheat that easily? I heard having the right SD card can help with overheating?
Not easy just has 30 - 40 min recording limit depends on your shooting environment - avoid directly under the Sun the Insta360 X4 should be able to keep going.

Yes absolutely! The shadows is not important and HLG can easy boost the shadow back in post by reduce the contrast curve. The best way to grade it in my opinion. I might design some lut base on this settings. Hold tight!

I read somewhere that you recommended the X4 over the Qoocam for more action intensive shots. I intend to use whichever camera I purchase as a running camera from multiple angles and vantages. Up to 3m with a selfie stick while moving.

Maybe the new DJI? Just joking. X4 seem to be more stable on a long stick - not because it has better stabilization but just simply lighter - lot lighter than Qoocam 3 Ultra. So your pole flex less mean more stable. But if it is short and thick pole - then they are pretty much the same.

I've noticed some frame "glitching" about every 15-16 frames in playback. It's more noticeable if I zoom in. Cannot figure out which setting or playback function is causing it. Any thoughts on what it might be?
Qoocam 3 Ultra? Sound like encoder bug. Are you shooting in DR Boost - are you using SD card instead of internal storage. SD card is not fast enough and it will glitch as I state in this video
@hughhou This is recording in 10bit, DR Boost turned off and recording to the internal SSD. I confirmed it's still there with the latest firmware as well. Hardly noticeable at the standard wide reframes, but when I crop way in, which is common for my use case, it becomes more noticeable.

I don't know if you upscale to 8K - as there is AI variable there. In low light RS might still be better. But compare "without" AI, Q3 is sharper. If you are familiar with RS 1" - I will suggest you stick to it as your outdoor shot has lots of details just require a bigger sensor to handle

did you saw lower temperature and/or lower fan noise when recording on q3u on external ssd vs internal storage recording (as the heat generated from solid state storage is now external, or is the heat from internal storage negligible compared to heat generated by cpu and camera sensor inside the q3u ? i remember that heat from fast sd card was quite high)
Okay since you ask, I forgot to mention 1 very important thing: turn the fan off (slient mode) with external SSD and external power will last the camera forever as storage and battery is what generating heat. That is another way to have forever slient recording - for music show and performance.
@@hughhou these are the useful findings you may want to share, as i think overheat on camera sensor degrade image quality at sensor readout ( increased noise) , so lower heat is always good ;) should we go up to the point of removing the internal battery and letting the battery door open to vent out the cpu and sensor heat from natural convection ? thanks for sharing your experience and hacks

Dang I did not... wait what is the problem? Why everyone having issue on photo stitching and I DO NOT... I honest never see any stitching issue. So what is the issue? Also, you can just stitch in PTGui on this camera. You get raw fisheye not like Insta360.

I have reached out to customer service and they don’t have a definite answer. For some people, they may not care, but if you’re trying to use these images in a high resolution headset, the problem stick out like a sore thumb. They said they were going to work on a calibration procedure like they have for the QooCam 3 which I’m hoping fixes the issue
What is up with the building going liquid on the top left of the time lapse. They need to fix that. Yikes!
It is me not them lol. So the camera is mount on a 3 meter pole and poling it out of the building - so in 360 you look like you are floating in the air (pretty nut - that shot only look good in VR or Vision Pro). But since the pole will flex as the camera is not light, the wind will make the camera move. That is what you are seeing there. Timelapse DNG has NO stabilization as it is just individual DNG without stabilization. So you need your platform super solid. For us, we choose creative instead of stabilization here. But very good eye and attention to details. We love viewers can point out problem and this is this community for!

thank you for your helpful review , I already ordered this camera after your first review and waiting for it to arrive . you mentioned that we can develop some apps for it , it makes me think about the potential of this camera for my job . I do aerial photogrammetry and do some test with insta360 one x for some small area project . lack of resolution makes it hard to get acceptable result , but with qoocam 96mp photos , things might change . I hope that I can make a program for it to get GPS data from RTK receiver and make it much accurate to make a low range accurate photogrammety camera for my job.
Wow that sound really interesting! I doubt the resolution is there still. But maybe with lidar and G-splat you can fill up the gap. Love to learn more as well. That is the world I will eventually want to get there hehe.

Overheating had been the bane of my existence. I use a 360 on a boom at the back of my kayak and let it run constantly, cuz you never know when you're gonna get a fish and you want to catch that surprise. Insta X2 was overheating after half hour. I switched to Max and it's actually pretty good. I've recorded 11 hour sessions in the spring, fall and winter and about 6 hours in dead summer without issue. I just think the video quality is lacking
Qoocam 3 Ultra with the latest firmware WILL NOT overheat even under the hot sun. There is fan inside. So you will be good on this camera and prefect for your usecase - set it forget about it.

Hi Hugh, love your content, great video! I just got the QooCam 3 Ultra and I am NOT getting the same quality you are getting here, not sure if I am doing something wrong, but there are some real issues with this camera that need to be pointed out, starting with the need to install the Android app on your mac, as macs do not see the file system of the QC3U, but the really annoying part is that I am getting way better image quality from my X4 than from the QC3U, I get way better dynamic range on HDR shooting on the X4 vs the HLG-10bit, and the extra-step to stitch the image and export before using it on Insta360 studio adds to the workflow.
Yes Android file transfer is needed for Mac to use Andorid based device - like Meta Quest. I just assume most Mac users has it as most folks has Meta Quest. For the HDR mode in X4 is not real HDR - and full artifacts - not a mode I will recommand to use and even Insta360 wont advice to use that mode. But it is strange you get better result. Are you shooting at 8K?
@@hughhou yes in 8k, but I realized what happened! The HLG 10bit can only be used at lower ISOs 100 and below, so if you are not in a bright environment then you’ll crush the shadows. Only 8bit mode alllows to use higher ISOs

We have no idea if One RS 1" is coming at all - I am just teasing there but no info so far. If Insta360 is going to launch something it is One RS turns. But for 360 mod to come out will be a while. As traditionally, the mod is 1 year or more after the release of the brain unit. Insta360 compete with GoPro and DJI first so make sense the next camera will be a 2D not 360.

With 150mbps bitrate it should last for about 90min of high quality recording
But I wish they increase bitrate higher for better quality and lower the compression artifacts

Hi Hugh, Is it possible to turn a 2d content to an immersive experience for headsets using software alone or do i need to have shot it on a VR camera that is 3d or 360 first? New to this and am waiting to buy either a 3d 180 or 360 like the QC3 Ultra.
It is better to shoot it right now as AI is not there yet. Mostly because there is no enough sample data. Literally AI can only train on my video lol. Also, AI can not reach more than 1080P resolution as the GPU limit unless you have A100 so learn capture is still easier and way cheaper.
Should we shoot low light still with hdr when there are some hot lights but still dark mostly or in regular video mode?

Thank you! That is because the camera is on a long 3 meter pole and it flex. If it is shorter pole or on a tripod should be fine.

No. But 10-bit has a bigger file and I do not have enough internal storage for that and do not want to bust out my external SSD.

They released a new firmware udpate claiming to fix some stuff with EV... would you still recommend turning it down by -1EV?
I still lol. Testing the firemware now but still like that -0.5 or -1 EV look. Even DR Boost only give you 14-stop of DR and the sun is way hotter in 360. Think about even RED with 16-stop the sun will clip so it is always smart to reduce EV a bit to just keep all info inside. The camera in daylight is surpirsingly clear - so raising the shadow won't be any issue. In low light that set it back to 0 EV

Quad bayer is SONY sensor tech lol. Canon do not do that. Kandao use SONY like sensor I assume (not confirm but same as Insta360 I believe? GoPro make their own sensor) Also, it won't be fair as Canon sensor is soooooo much bigger than Qoocam 3 Ultra. Honestly, R5 II sensor blow everyone out of water (including the latest SONY) but for some reason everyone hate Canon... Internet is a strange place.

So Qoocam acutally has High Mid and Low instead of letting you set the number. Here is the thing - the source is 150Mbps so artifactually up to 200Mbps won't be good for the output. Insta360 X4 source is 100Mbps - and no idea why they allow people to pick 200Mbps. So for Quest, you bitrate should be 80Mbps - not 200Mbps (can't play it back - way too high). So bitrate is one thing, the source quality is way more important. That shot I am just comparing fps - I might pick the wrong Q3Ultra render to compare lol.
Higher bitrate intermediates can make sense to reduce generational loss, particularly if using simpler encoders like hardware encoders in faster modes. Twice as high might be excessive though, unless switching to something like I-frame only (e.g. ProRes). At some point you'd just reproduce prior compression artifacts.
Side note, 29.97 isn't cinema. It's USA colour TV, for historical reasons, and was always a mismatch for film (which led to devices reconstructing 24/1.001 from 60/1.001, while the source was often 24). Many cameras conflate them also. All HDMI displays should accept either, simply because it's within the margin they can sync to. The main thing to run into problems is computers that don't adjust their output rates; e.g. 90Hz VR headsets will stutter with both 24fps or 60fps source material, causing users to request 72 or 120 modes. Stutter is far more disturbing in VR than small flat screens, but so is low frame rates, and 60 is low.
Tell me pls how does Qoocam 3 Ultra work with the QooCam app on the phone? I used the latest version of the QooCam app with the QooCam 8K camera during my last trip and the app still worked poorly. It constantly disconnected from the camera and in order to connect the app to the camera, I constantly had to manipulate it. I think you understand what I'm talking about. I also wanted to ask you if the video blurs after long shooting on the Qoocam 3 Ultra? On the QooCam 8K camera this was a problem and many users came to the conclusion that this happens because the camera heats up, which leads to blurring of the picture. Have you noticed anything like this?
Would two Insta360 X4 side by side, 8k mode, on a tripod, with a distance of 64mm work for 3d stereo 360 ? :) Make and experiment. Might work only with 14700k CPU, via SteamLink streaming to VR goggles. That would be 2 x 8k playback.

The Qoocam 3 Ultra is a great camera, I feel it is like an upgrade from my X4 because I use it solely for 360 VR Video creation. However the only downside now is the lack of accesoires like Utility frame and Diving case. When it could have those available it would be a 100% replacement from my X4.

These cams are so great it makes me wonder why Apple hasn't come out with a 360 iphone.... they just need to have a front and back camera...
One reason is that a 180 camera has a lens that sticks out from the face of the camera. Without this, 180 is physically impossible. On the other hand, if we settle for something less than 180, you could put two on the back spaced eye distance apart, and have pretty good 140 to 160 3D. That would be enough for the Apple headset.
Oh we don't know... iPhone 16 is coming in coupled days....

X4 weights 203g without it's 2290mAh battery. Q3U weights 296g without it's smaller 2280mAh battery which makes it 45.81% heavier. Additionally the X4 is 8.92% bigger by volume. So the Q3U is smaller by volume and has a smaller batter but 45% heavier. Wow! What did they stuff into that camera? Since you got a free camera, @hughhou make a year down video let's see the insides of the Q3U. Let's vote for a teardown video with thumbs up on this comment.
I am not smart enough for tear it down lol. That require some enginnering skill I do not have. They have GPS, livestream module and internally storage. The chip I hear it is bigger as it need to be powerful to process all those data.
I reckon they stuffed in a lot more glass for those nearly 40% bigger image sensors (1/1.7" vs 1/2"), likely a ceramic antenna for the GPS receiver, a metal chassis and most importantly an actual heatsink for the cooling system (which also has ducting and a fan). As for 2.29 vs 2.28 Ah, that difference in nominal numbers is irrelevant (individual battery variance is larger).

Update: New Firmware V1.0.2.6 solved the issue I had with V1.0.1.33.
So far I found two software bugs (V1.0.1.33) with my new Qoocam 3 Ultra, it happens if I expose with the camera and with the App:
1) AEB, with the following settings the 1st Exposure does not use the adjusted ISO. Exposure M: Time: Auto / ISO: 100 / EV 0 / Exposure Max: Auto / WB 5200K
-> 1st Exposure is NOT at ISO 100, 2nd Exposure is at 100 ISO, 3rd Exposure is at 100 ISO.
2) Photo mode sometimes saves a stitched DNG. Camera is set to Exposure M, if I set Exposure Time to Auto I get two the usual 2 circular fisheye images, if I set an Exposure Time (for example 1/1000s) I get a stitched equirectangular DNG.
Any ideas ? I googled and searched here in the comments, but found no report about that.
Remark: Would be nice if the bracketing would offer -4 EV.
Prob software bug they will need to fix it in next update. For AEB - it might need to adjust ISO to get your the same EV gap?

Just so you know, if you are in the market for action camera - both DJI and GoPro are releasing an action camera. I am not gonna review any action camera on this channel as it is focus only on VR180 and 360. But I do recommand you wait for that before pulling any trigger. Know your options out there first. There is lots of new release this month and Oct!
