That's a kind of lesson that remind me when I was studying Arabic at the University :-) Yeah everybody almost everywhere study the modern standard Arabic, that is spoken through the media, in the newspapers and generally in public. This is a great language, with no doubt, but don't forget that in each Arabic Country they speak their official dialect that is open to other linguistic influences. Between these dialects I know qite well the Syrian one and I have to say that it is one of the spoken dialects closest to the standard Arabic, regarding to the used words. More far we go from the Mashrek, the Middle East, toward the North Africa or Maghreb, more distance we find between the standard Arabic and the relative dialect. It was so hard to communicate in fusha with people from Morocco or Tunisia when I was in Italy...

The literal meaning of Selam is peace; but it's used to greet people. Same thing in Hebrew, Shalom, and in the Ethiopian languages such as Amharic.
