    I've had many 2 strokes over the years, RD250s 350s and 400s, 350 and 500L/Cs and Aprilia RS250s, but by far the best bike I've ever had was in 1995 a Yamaha/Aprilia hybrid, it was a Yamaha RD500L/C engine with a stan stephens stage 3 tune in an Aprilia RS 250 frame and chasis, it was the sweetist handling stroker I've owned and more than a match for any of the 1990s superbikes.

      Indeed, I rode the blue & white 400cc Gamma in Japan (just a test ride). It felt like riding a 1970's 10-speed at 90 mph. Although mid to late 1980's, their performance was likely similar to a modern (read very fast) 600cc. A wicked and beautiful motorcycle.

      Apart from slow, all valid points. Did you watch the video. Nsr500 v4 200hp how is that slow. 2 strokes are twice the power and twice as SMOOTH as there 4 stroke equivalent. Lighter and simpler.

    I have a 2002 NSR 150 SP sitting in my garage. It's one of the last Honda 2 stroke road bikes made and was assembled in Thailand. It's a 150 cc single cylinder 2 stroke putting out a claimed 39 hp at 10,000 rpm. Stock it topped at 180 kph ( 112 mph) and ran about a 14 sec 1/4 mile. I modded it with Tyga performance parts including air box, carbon reed valve, porting, reprogrammed ECU, exhaust, jetting and suspension mods. The stock motor was dynoed at 27.5 WHP and after mods, it put out 34.7 WHP at 10,500 rpm. Stock, it redlined at 10,500 rpm and modded it was still pulling at 11,000 rpm. I timed it with GPS at 193 kph (120 mph). The quality of the steel frame was poor and developed a crack. Although welded, it's probably going to break again. I then ran into the back of a small truck at about 30 kph. Forks bent and fairing and various bits broken but I rebuilt it with parts from Tyga Performance. However, it has just sat for 4 years but this video has rekindled my desire to get it back on the road. Before the crash, I rebuilt the gearbox and clutch which took a hammering. Two stroke power band can be addictive. It's like having a turbo. I rode it like I stole it everywhere I went. Lucky not to get booked once apart from the negligent riding fine when I crashed. The engine may need to be freshened up with a rebore, cylinder recoated and new piston. Parts are getting harder to get. They were the gun bikes in South East Asia along with the Kawasaki 150 and 125 RR's. They all tend to be thrashed without mercy so there are very few good examples left for parts. Aprilia had a kick arse 125 as well. My NSR 150 is an absolute giant killer and shocked some big bike riders at track days. I might need to lose a bit of weight to get up and boogie again, although at a slower pace (:

    Not quite sure where you get the idea that none of the Bimota 500-Vdue's were road legal. I bought mine in 2001 and sold it in 2016 and it was very much road legal. That said 26 updated units were produced in 1999 which were not road legal. Then in 2001 the "Evoluzione Corsa" was produced ( 14 units ) which were not street legal. The first 150 Bimota 500-Vdue's produced were all street legal.

    One of the advantages of the two stroke is the simplicity. While you focused on the extreme high tech rockets, the simple, light weight, low cost two stroke race bikes totally dominated the dirt tracks in the '60s and 70s. And the most popular were bikes from Spain (!!): Bultaco and Montessa. I owned a Bultaco Mattise TT 250 4 speed, and later, a Pursang 250 twin plug, electronic ignition, mikuni carb, backporting and and still have screws and plates in my arm as a special trophy for a flat track race I did not win half a century ago. I have had a very good life.

    OMG i seriously had heart palpitations listening to those two stokes, god what a trip - total nostalgia brings back so many good memories of my childhood.... My al time favorite would have to be my KX 500 E12 .... What a total animal / nut case machine it was - i used to wheel stand that bike in 5th gear - no clutch - bit of rear brake - it would pause for a second - take a deep breath and it could wheel stand literally for kilometer's.

      He's a Legend & a top bloke as well,I've met him on 3 or 4 occasions,sometimes with Bazza (Barry Sheene) Mick did with the NSR what Casey Stoner did to his Ducati,nobody else could ride them but these guys won World Titles on them. I'd like to see the racers of today riding the bikes Mick Doohan & Wayne Gardner rode to win their GP 500 Titles back in the late 80's & mid 90's. I did quite a few trips to Phillip Island back in the day just to see those guys win.. Maybe Jack Miller can notch up a win down there this year or next,I'll pray for rain,ha ha ha.

      Rob Kimler that checks out with everything I've heard/read,Wayne Rainey who was my favourite rider from that era when I was young,always respected Mick and admired his straight talking antipodean ways,also his guts,grit and grace.Wayne was trying to (ironically) get some safety introduced for riders and the tracks made safer and he said that Mick was one of the few riders with the balls and backbone to stand up to the corporate money men that have always had their noses in Grand Prix racing.After Wayne was injured,cheering for Mick seemed the right thing to do.As you say Stoner is in that mold,I thought it was the 2nd coming of Doohan but despite the incredible talent the dominance never materialised,even having said that,still the greatest rider since Mick and yes,I think even greater talent than Rossi.👍

    To this list I would add;
    Yamaha RZ500 and Suzuki RG500, awesome roadbikes
    Yamaha TZR250, Suzuki RGV250, great track day bikes
    The Honda NSR500 with the Big Bang engine, it made it so that more than 2 riders in the world could ride this beast to its limits.
    To those who think Mick Doohan was awesome, I would say he is even more so. When Honda introduced the “Big Bang”engine, Mick not only mastered this bike but went on to ride the older “screamer” engined bike for a further season to mess with his heads of his rivals. None of them wanted to keep riding the old bike, it was too hard to ride. He was the master.

  • @AuMechanic
    @AuMechanic 6 ปีที่แล้ว +50

    The CR500
    Yes they had lots of power, but it was the top speed that was more the issue IMO
    I rode a 91 model CR500 and road raced 1000 superbikes and no stranger to power and speed, but that sort of top speed on a dirt bike put the scare up me.
    It spun the back wheel in every gear on loose dirt so it wasn't like you could get all the power down, and that wasn't really the dangerous or scary part, just that given enough distance you soon got to widow maker speed which is likely why they got a reputation.
    If you are careful enough to know what point "too fast" is on dirt they are not a dangerous bike to ride nor any of the big bore 2t dirt bikes you mentioned.

    Quarter mile in 12.something seconds! That’s fast even today! Here in Denmark we had a Suzuki 750 2-stroke dubbed the “Water buffalo” because it was water cooled. My dad has some great stories from when he was a kid, in which he every morning woke up opened the window and listened because a guy in our neighborhood had one of these and would every day drive out on the main road and floor it through all the gears before slowing down getting into the town. After which my dad would go on about his daily routine.

    Yes. While good you left out the early 90’s 250’s. All of the big four had one. Tough call in the best, but I’m going with 1992 Yamaha TZR 250 SP.
    Also, the Suter 575 is by far the most exotic 2T ever offered for sale. It does have fuel injection.

    I still have my 2 stroke RD350. It was tons of fun. I got a bit carried away when I built it though so the pipes are ridiculously peaky. At 5 grand, you can whack the throttles wide open and it just sounds a bit different. Do that at 6K and the front tire meets the heavens. I'd always warn people, but 4 stroke bike guys were always the same. They'd roll into the throttle at 3 grand, wouldn't feel anything and then roll it half way and hold it there. And of course, the instant it hits 6 grand, it would either snap the front end off the ground like it had dynamite under it or the back tire would just step out. And then they'd come back with shaky knees and be all "I'm good". Not exactly a good bike for commuting, but my god was it fun to ride around town. Those RD's were wheelie machines stock... After you had enough power to make the stock clutch slip though, they were just ridiculous fun. Ring a ding ding ding... ding. :P

    That's not why the H2 was called the widow maker, the first models had a gearbox that would let you go straight from 5th to neutral to first. riders would do this going roughly 100mph and crash. That's why it was called a widow maker.

    I've been riding 2 stroke motorcycles on the road nearly everyday for the past 39 years. They can be an addiction that lasts a lifetime. It all starts with that first 2 stroke powerband experience and then your hooked.....
    I borrowed my son's 1985 CZ 125 a few years ago to ride into town. Saw a kid on a new top of the range Yamaha 125cc R1 wannabe bike. He wanted to race so he blasted off down a long straight, head in the fairing, ass in the air. As I easily overtook him, I pointed to the engine and mouthed, "Two Stroke", then just left him to choke on the blue haze.
    That's the point. Even a 1985 2 stroke commuter bike (with the restrictors removed) will still eat a 2015 expensive top of the range 4 stroke 125cc.
