The Hillenburg Enan seems pretty nice, but I think I'm going to end up going with the Moment DW for one simple reason: it's about half the price, and the downsides you listed aren't massive considerations for me. Thanks for making this video!
I was looking to buy myself a Scarp 1, but they weren't available at the time. Being impatient, I ended up buying the Moment DW, with carbon poles (including the crossing pole). I don't mind having to pay extra to get it sealed, or to provide my own guylines (I'm fussy, and like to pick these things for myself), and I love its efficiency and flexibility, but it's too small to comfortably spend any time in. Only for short trips in inclement weather, and longer trips if it's fine. *edit* just watched to the end and it looks like you've got something wrong with the placement of the restraint pockets for the arch pole. The crossing tension strap is very high, it should be at ground level.

I'm still conflicted. I've come to the realization that there is no perfect tent. After much thought I bought the Durston X-Mid 1P Solid. Same model I had last year and sold. Will have to give up my storage poles as part of the problem with that tent is the need for adjustable poles for varied pitching options and terrain. Also I will have to deal with the bigger footprint. But overall it a good, solid, no fiddle tent to put up in the worst of conditions. Also, I just like a well constructed product that is going to last longer than one thru hike. So far I have found that in all of Durstons gear. Keep Smilin'

No matter what tent you get, you have to stake them out. Condensation is the number one problem in tents. You can’t get proper circulation without staking a tent. And if you’ve ever seen a freestanding tent loaded down with equipment suddenly start tumblweeding across the desert, you’ll never leave your tent unstaked again. We carry a 10’x10’ piece of ultra light Sil poly as a tarp and wrap up anything not in the tent and cinch the top instead of using the vestibules. Better air circulation and equipment doesn’t get wet from condensation. As far as the pole sleeve, I struggled with it on the Rainbow DW. I just swabbed the whole sleeve with some very thinned out silicone and it made a big difference insert and removing the pole. Maybe 10 grams added, maybe nothing. The sleeve is also more rugged now and I’m not so worried about tearing. I like the tarptent because it is really light and compressible. It is different than other tents I’ve used so it will take some getting used to. And you know how it is, you’ve got to make some changes to make it suit you.
I liked the Moment, but once I could get the backordered Hilleberg enan I did. Much more expensive, but worth it for me. Much less fiddling. Appreciate the comment. Makes a lot of sense. Keep Smilin'

Mine is 41 oz. It cost me $700, but I think they are $750 now. My first one was the Akto. I used it for 17 years and still sold it for half the price I paid. Not just quality build & material , but I take good care of my gear. Keep Smilin'
Solid review on a solid tent! Was on my short list, but concerned about interior height (39"). This has raised added concerns. Did you check out the Dipole? How's the 32" width in the X-Mid 1? Looking at full DW, solid options for shoulder seasons in alpine WY where wind is heavy and night temps range from 25-40F. 2 lbs or less. The X-Mid (1/2 solid, 1/2 mesh) is better for me than the 2/3 solid 1/3 mesh of the Dipole. Less claustrophobic. Agree with you - reduce vestibules and add interior space. I only put my boots outside. Think the Dipole wins on width (36-28") vs the X-mid (32") though. Top of my head on a Neo Air NXT is 36" so 39" H in the X-mid is a bit tight. 43" in the Dipole is nice, but seems that 43" is only at the center, where the X-mid 39" peak is much longer. Coming from a roomy, 28 oz SMD Trekker with 45" peak height, 48" W at base. But, 1 panel is single wall and no solid wall option. Freestanding tents at this weight aren't as strong/durable and don't have a solid inner option.
I liked the Moment & the xmid solid, but went back to my Hilleberg Enan because of less fiddling, and better quality. The other two are much less expensive, but the Hilleberg should last me for years. Been in a lot of blows with it over the years and trust it to keep me warm & dry. Keep Smilin'
It looks like you might have the carbon fiber arch pole. If so, that is likely a big source of your frustration. I had the TT rainbow tent and it’s a similar design except the pole goes head to foot. The carbon fiber pole was very difficult to slide through the silnylon sleeve because it would stick to the fabric. I put some light silicone lubricant (for airsoft guns) on the pole and it went through like magic after that! Henry Shire verified it wouldn’t hurt anything. You could also try baby powder, or maybe just get the aluminum pole. I will admit those nylon webbing pole pockets are fiddly! Trying to get the pole tip in the opening of them always drove me crazy. Anyway, if you still have this tent I hope that helps!
Thank you. I sold the tent, but that does make sense. I bought the carbon poles because they fit into the storage hiking poles I used at the time. I had never had carbon poles before. In the end I think it was the fiddle factor with the end sleeves. Seems like a small complaint, but I don't like to fiddle. Keep Smilin'

You made me think about whether I really want to be putting the pole tips into those little nylon webbing pockets in cold windy conditions! I will say that I am going to try the setup method that Hilleberg recommends for their tunnel-type tents though - stake out one end upwind first, then the tent is more under control and won’t blow away while I put the pole in and walk to the other end to stake it down. I do really like the idea of potentially only needing 2 snow anchors to fully secure the tent though (with others as needed depending on wind). If I get the Moment I’ll probly try sewing an end to the pole sleeve on one end, to make setup easier. Thanks again for your thoughts on this tent!
Late to the party but thank you for posting this on the TT Moment. Saw it and paid attention but went ahead and purchased one. And with your review added some bits to the Moment to make it better. I am a backpacker and bike tourist with 40-60 nights out a year around in Wyoming and Montana so my $$ for tents is split into threes, winter, three season, and a bivy 'n micro tarp. The quick set up and stability of the Moment is light years ahead of its predecessor, so its a win for me.
Glad it is working out for you. Tarptent makes good product. I have since gone back to a Hilleberg Enan. They were out-of stock when I bought the Moment. this is excatly what im looking for out of a review. An old timer that has used a product and knows what to look for because he actually used it. So tired of all the goons in my feed coming out of europe where all they do is show you how they tie their shoes, eat food, and walk on trails as part of their 30min review of a tent. 3 minutes of which they actually talk about the tent. and then it is all, lovely, wonderful, really surprisingly stupendous, right on, cheerio.
Glad it helped. This is not a bad tent. I used it when my Hilleberg ripped and they were on backorder. As soon as I could buy another Hilleberg I sold this one. It is half the price of a Hilleberg, but no where near the quality. Everyone has their own needs when it comes to gear. There is no perfect tent, but the Enan comes close for me. Great review, you make some really solid points. I'd love to try the Enan but it is currently selling for $785 and the Moment is $299 so I think I'm going with the Moment. I own the Hilleberg Unna so I know the quality of their tents is top notch. If a person can only have one or two tents I'd probably advise them to get the Enan as well. Buy once cry once. I guess all we can do is gather the most information we can and make the best decision possible. I think you will be happy with the Moment. It's not a bad tent. There were just a couple of fiddly things I didn't like compared to my Enan. I know what you mean about the price, ouch. Keep Smilin'
I sold my Durston as well due to its large footprint. I’m using the Tarptent Rainbow LI and so far it’s wonderful….but I don’t have enough nights in it yet to know for sure.
Besides my trusty enan i had a notch li, then durston 1p xmid solid, then tarptent moment, now as of yesterday, back to the xmid solid. Can't get a hilleberg so I'm taking the Durston on the CT. It checks a lot of boxes for me. Footprint is my concern and reason I sold it this winter, but I'll have to deal with it and give up my storage poles to make this tent work for me. Keep Smilin'
Boy oh boy you just can't see how good this tent is. Too bad because it is great on the trail in ALL weather. I've had the Moment DW for years and prefer to use it in winter camping. (My TT NOTCH Li is for 3 season) I have the optional Crossing Pole but shortened it 5" and run it UNDER the fly for better support in heavy snow and high winds. Under the fly I sewed shortened two double-sided Velcro cable ties, sewed them to the reinforcing patches for the exterior X-ing pole attachments and seam sealed them.These 2 wraps keep the X-ing Pole in place in high winds. AS FOR THE HILLEBERG AKTO: It's flat ends do NOT shed snow so it is purely a 3 season tent. The ENAN is better for this. Your comparisons with the Moment DW are mainly niggles. ** The Moment DW has no blind end on its main pole tube B/C you could no longer RAISE THE FLY HEM on both sides for better cross ventilation and still have rain protection. Different design than the AKTO/ENAN for a good reason. BTW, MSR Ground Hog stakes are MUCH better than the round shank stakes for holding power.
Yes, it's all subjective with gear. Sold my moment as soon as the Enan came available again from backorder. Just prefer it. I like my stakes as it allows me to drive them flush with the ground and put rocks over them. Thanks for commenting. Keep Smilin'

You should check out the Nortent Vern 1. It seems to fill in a lot of the gaps that the Hillenburg Akto/Enam and the Fjallraven Abisko Lite 1 have in terms of space and access to ventilation. It’s a nifty tent with dyneema at the points needing reinforcement.
They seem really good and spacious compared to your hilleberg. Check out a couple of videos by Andrew Park where he sets one up for the first time and another in which he uses it a night out in the rain. Paul Messner also did a recent ASMR video in which he used the tent (where I first became aware of the tent). Xander Budnick uses one of the Nortent done tents for hot tent camping in northern Ontario and has used it in extreme conditions.
@@wanderworm I did look at the tent. Has many of the setup features this Moment has. A bit too heavy for me. Trying to go the other way weight-wise. Bought the xmid solid again. Lighter than both Enan & Moment, super simple setup, storm worthy and quality built. Never should have sold the one I had last year. I've only had the Akto & Enan. Loved them both. Pretty much the same tent, Enan the lighter version. Both lasted years of constant use. They're having supply issues currently. Good luck. Keep Smilin'

@@packtoterthanks for posting. Our Double wall rainbow has similar problem with pole sleeve as the Moment. And like so many modern tents the vestibules are much too big. Who needs monster vestibules when you are packing ultralight? But those huge vestibules do limit camp site selection. Proper staking requires those to be fully stretched out. Finally, what jennifer7588 says here is also true. Most designers abandoned sleeves for clips for exactly all the issues discussed. In addition( as we’ve seen with the Double Rainbow) sleeves are sites of condensation and restrict air flow. Keep smiling
Tried to like the Moment but too many little quirks I couldn't get comfortable with. Finally the Enan was back in stock and I bought another one. Just saw a tent called a Nortent Vern 1 I think. Can't remember exact name, but looks a lot like the Enan with large Vents above door. Keep Smilin'
I have videos on how to make them. Aluminum poles that I can store things in, and easily replace tips. Just google DIY hiking poles. They should pop up. Keep Smilin'
@juskojj sold it too, for the 2nd time. Hilleberg was backordered on the Enan when mine ripped this spring on the Arizona Trail. I used the X-Mid on the Colorado Trail. I think it's a great tent, but I always end up going back to my Hilleberg. Keep Smilin'
Well you know what you like. Personally too expensive and heavy. Very similar to the moment dw.... ever look at slingfin tents? If I got out more I'd spend more money on the tent but I can't justify it and like you don't like dynema so I'm looking at the X-Mid 2 for winter, or when I bring one of my boy's. I also have an alps tasmanian 2 but that's 7lbs of solid 4 season tent, great tent but heavy.
@joshjusko3236 I carry the hoop pole & stakes in my storage hiking poles, which gets me to about the same weight as the xmid on my back. Been using Hilleberg tents for 25 years. Every time I try something new I regret it. The Tarptent Moment was the same design as the Enan, but nowhere near the quality. I think I'm cured of tent shopping. Cost me a few hundred bucks buying high and selling low. Keep Smilin'
Looks like a great tent but definitely not for me. Looks too complicated to set up especially in wind like you said. I've tried the xmid pro 1 and so far I'm really happy with it. So I'd say if you liked the xmid solid 1, you'll love the pro. You said you were considering it. If you can afford it, I'm sure you won't be disappointed. The pro is more spacious than the solid, smaller footprint and is stronger in the wind. And it does a great job with condensation after a really humid night with 2h of really strong rain, I had no condensation in the morning (I opened one door after the rain stopped) if you don't like the xmid I'm sure you'll be able to sell it without loosing much money if at all. You should check out the Nortent Vern 1. It seems to fill in a lot of the gaps that the Hillenburg Akto/Enam and the Fjallraven Abisko Lite 1 have in terms of space and access to ventilation. It’s a nifty tent with dyneema at the points needing reinforcement.

They seem really good and spacious compared to your hilleberg. Check out a couple of videos by Andrew Park where he sets one up for the first time and another in which he uses it a night out in the rain. Paul Messner also did a recent ASMR video in which he used the tent (where I first became aware of the tent). Xander Budnick uses one of the Nortent done tents for hot tent camping in northern Ontario and has used it in extreme conditions.
@@wanderworm I did look at the tent. Has many of the setup features this Moment has. A bit too heavy for me. Trying to go the other way weight-wise. Bought the xmid solid again. Lighter than both Enan & Moment, super simple setup, storm worthy and quality built. Never should have sold the one I had last year. Just have to deal with the bigger footprint & back to adjustable poles. Thanks again. Keep Smilin'
Which Hilleberg do you like more? I am in the market for a new tent and the options I am down to all share the central pole sleeve feature.
I've only had the Akto & Enan. Loved them both. Pretty much the same tent, Enan the lighter version. Both lasted years of constant use. They're having supply issues currently. Good luck. Keep Smilin'
do you like it any better now. Debating buying the li 1 or the rainbow li 1 for the pct. like you I only need one vestibule and door only debating one of these because someone has one for sale
I remember answering this, but it doesn't show I have. Haven't figured out this comment system yet. Sorry if I have already answered you. It was a good tent, but not close to a Hilleberg Enan. However it is less expensive. I sold it and bought a new Enan as soon as they were available again. Keep Smilin'

I would change the middle pole design to have carbon cups at the ends and put clips instead off sleeve then it be faster pitch and less hassle .
Yes, that design needs some tweeking. Fine in fine weather, but try it when the wind it blowing sideways. Keep Smilin'
@@packtoterthanks for posting. Our Double wall rainbow has similar problem with pole sleeve as the Moment. And like so many modern tents the vestibules are much too big. Who needs monster vestibules when you are packing ultralight? But those huge vestibules do limit camp site selection. Proper staking requires those to be fully stretched out. Finally, what jennifer7588 says here is also true. Most designers abandoned sleeves for clips for exactly all the issues discussed. In addition( as we’ve seen with the Double Rainbow) sleeves are sites of condensation and restrict air flow. Keep smiling

The Moment dw look great with the ventilation and weight specs though.

Tried to like the Moment but too many little quirks I couldn't get comfortable with. Finally the Enan was back in stock and I bought another one. Just saw a tent called a Nortent Vern 1 I think. Can't remember exact name, but looks a lot like the Enan with large Vents above door. Keep Smilin'
@@packtoter Vern 1 yes a Norwegian brand. About same Weight as the Hilleberg Akto with the crosspole.
By the looks i think it handles snow better.

I have videos on how to make them. Aluminum poles that I can store things in, and easily replace tips. Just google DIY hiking poles. They should pop up. Keep Smilin'

@juskojj sold it too, for the 2nd time. Hilleberg was backordered on the Enan when mine ripped this spring on the Arizona Trail. I used the X-Mid on the Colorado Trail. I think it's a great tent, but I always end up going back to my Hilleberg. Keep Smilin'
Well you know what you like. Personally too expensive and heavy. Very similar to the moment dw.... ever look at slingfin tents?
If I got out more I'd spend more money on the tent but I can't justify it and like you don't like dynema so I'm looking at the X-Mid 2 for winter, or when I bring one of my boy's. I also have an alps tasmanian 2 but that's 7lbs of solid 4 season tent, great tent but heavy.
@joshjusko3236 I carry the hoop pole & stakes in my storage hiking poles, which gets me to about the same weight as the xmid on my back. Been using Hilleberg tents for 25 years. Every time I try something new I regret it. The Tarptent Moment was the same design as the Enan, but nowhere near the quality. I think I'm cured of tent shopping. Cost me a few hundred bucks buying high and selling low. Keep Smilin'
Looks like a great tent but definitely not for me. Looks too complicated to set up especially in wind like you said.
I've tried the xmid pro 1 and so far I'm really happy with it. So I'd say if you liked the xmid solid 1, you'll love the pro. You said you were considering it. If you can afford it, I'm sure you won't be disappointed. The pro is more spacious than the solid, smaller footprint and is stronger in the wind. And it does a great job with condensation after a really humid night with 2h of really strong rain, I had no condensation in the morning (I opened one door after the rain stopped) if you don't like the xmid I'm sure you'll be able to sell it without loosing much money if at all. Great video, as always.
