One thing about Blade that doesn't get enough praise is how beautiful the cinematography is.There's nothing like it in terms of visuals in the comic book genre.

    • @GRZNGT

Agree, even Blade's own sequels pale in comparison. The lighting is what makes the cinematography so outstanding, and Blade nails it perfectly.

Lighting and cinematorgraphy often falls down to a saparate person, director of photography. No matter how good your directing, a mediocre dof can nullify that.

Kriss Kringle Watchmen (or really any Zack Snyder comic book film), TDK trilogy, Ang Lee’s Hulk, and Road to Perdition all had really great cinematography too. Honestly better than Blade’s in a lot of ways.

@@wariowuzo9433 That's like comparing different art styles. You can often look at bad art (meaning artistic technique is bad) and clearly see the difference when comparing it to good art (so artistic technique is good... and beyond the realm of surrealism, which we won't get into. But, comparing good art to other good art with different techniques is a harder sell, because at that point, you are comparing what works on an individual level.
There is a gritty, but very stylistic flavor to Blade that I haven't quite seem replicated elsewhere, even in Stephen Norrington's next film, the huge failure, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. There is also the factor of what the director brings to the table and what the cinematographer brings to the table, because it is often different mixtures depending on how hands on or off or how in unison the two are. Given Norrington's painter background, it is not unreasonable to think there were a lot of discussions on how the film should look, meaning a hands on approach.
Given the films you've mentioned, which by the way, I love most of them, Road to Perdition is one of the most breathtaking films I've ever seen. At the same time, a very different approach to the cinematography. The slow moving paintings, so well orchestrated, the long shots that fluidly reveal details, etc. I'm not sure any of this would have worked for the Blade film, even though Road has some of my fav. cinematography of all time in it.
The look and feel of Blade is on target. I don't think it's necessarily fair to compare Blade to films that are drastically different in tone and feel, whose goals are very different. Of the types of films that could be in the same vein, I think Blade easily tops them. I can't think of another monster/vampire hunter/whatever, such as the Underworld films or even the 2nd Blade film (which I still enjoy), comes close to comparing, because while they often have the grit and darker feel, they lack the visual aesthetic that really sells the backdrop and world of Blade.

TinMan 1325 that movie wasn’t really pushed as a comic book movie though. It was more a supernatural thriller, with everything being more about Brandon Lee than anything else.
Blade, had a well known comic origin, and was a major hit outside the normal crowd; and way outside just the Emo crowd that paid to see The Crow(plus the people who saw it out of morbid curiosity)

WB owns the rights to those films, so Marvel are not gonna take on the baggage of that universe just to avoid pissing fans off and not replace the actor playing Blade. Plus the MCU is a PG-13 world, they won't make an R rated film into their MCU, they don't have the balls. The most we may get is a series with Blade but it'll be played by someone else. Great exploring.I love the original blade, more so than Blade two. Not that the second one is bad, but I like the story of the first one a lot more. Weasley Snipes is awesome as blade and honestly really made me appreciate the character. I liked how the female character wasn't a love interest. A female character who isn't there just for romance. What a concept?! And it had fantastic world building/ Heck, if Marvel studios is smart and they decide to do something with Blade, intergrate this world with the MCU.
Vampires have always been secretive and as such, being that it takes place before Iron Man one, I can totally see this working.

I'm glad the creators managed to keep that hospital scene in. It is without a doubt the right way to do a jump scare. When I put the movie on for my sister she actually bolted off the couch at that scene with the fright and then proceeded to hit me with a cushion for not warning her about it. I was naturally cracking up laughing. It got me in the cinema the first time I saw the movie too and so I was dying to see her response and I wasn't disappointed :D
It proves studios should stay out of creators way.

I was introduced to Blade though Ghost Rider and Midnight Sons comics back in high school and became a big fan of the character, so naturally I was excited when the movie came out. Blade 2- one of the very rare instances where the sequel is actually better than the original and the original is quite good itself. I love that this video just got posted today when another reviewer just posted something about Gone Girl and (incorrectly) stated that David Fincher was only ever a Director and never a writer- I knew there were examples, and then lo and behold, this appears.

"What if the vampire was Jewish?"
It doesn't work that way. It's not the belief of the vampire that counts, it's the belief of the person wielding the cross. That's why Nightcrawler (a devout Catholic) was able to repel Dracula with a cross, but Wolverine (an atheist) could not. Also, Shadowcat (who IS Jewish) was able to also repel Dracula with her Star of David necklace.
Ironically, David S. Goyer is a comic fan AND Jewish, yet he didn't do the damn research before writing the script.

    • @DesignatedMember
      @DesignatedMember 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Interesting. That's a very post-modern way of dealing with the question. In the old days, it was the crosses themselves that held power (not people's belief in them). The thought underpinning this idea being that God was objectively real, and therefore his symbols would hurt forces of evil. Others Gods then, would not be objectively real, and therefore their symbols would hold no such power. The old Universal/Hammer Vampire films for example, seemed to have gone with this assumption. It's interesting how thoughts and assumptions change over time.

Blade also created that whole "bullet time" idea that the Matrix is often credited with.
The film cranked up the quality expectations for an action movie- longer, more elaborate fights, believable armored suits- everything expected in a Batman or Captain America movie today...and a kick-ass soundtrack!

Blade was also the first film to have the Marvel logo opening, and basically started the MCU. Also, there IS a reboot scheduled for production, however Marvel is following the "trend" of replacing the male lead characters with "strong women that don't need no man", by basically emasculating the male characters so the female replacements "appear better". Sadly, this is the fate for Blade according to what's been released/leaked of the script so far.

Hey GoodBad Flicks! Its your new biggest fan! I wanted to offer you one correction on this fantastic video about one of my most favorite comic book/vampire movies!
The Japanese female rappers and DJ that appear in the Japanese Vampire club scene were called "Bang Wa Cherry" and not "Shonen Knife." Then song they are performing is entitled: "Chin Chin," which I guess is basically a vulgar, Japanese slang term for the male sex organ. However, Shonen Knife's music did appear in the movie. I believe the inclusion of Shonen Knife occurred when Blade finds the secret entrance to Pearl's archive layer in the Kitchen of the Japanese Vampire club. If you listen, you can hear the song "Ah Singapore" by Shonen Knife playing in the background of that scene.
Anyway, I thought I would just add my 2-cents! I absolutely LOVE these videos of yours! Thanks for all your hard work!
