"I don't care anymore" probably saved my life. As a bullied high school student, I would listen to this on repeat in my car as I drove around at night, the only escape I had that told me that I didn't have to let the cruel kids beat me down into potentially suicidal thoughts. They wouldn't have cared if I lived or died, and this song made me realize that I didn't have to care about what they thought about me. Not Phil's reason for writing the song, but definitely my reason for making it through very rough teenage years.
I sympathize, very much. 15 years after those bad school years, my worst bully got out of prison (dealing drugs, running prostitution, multiple charges) and killed his ex-wife & mother-in-law while his little kids watched. He's been in prison ever since. Back in school, friends and relatives said I had to fight back and teach him a lesson. But one time during a brief break from his attacks, he said to me, "I can get to you any time I want. But if somehow I can't get to you, I can get to your sisters. Or your mother." So for years I kept feeling like all that was my fault for not having the courage to stand up to him. But after the murders I realized that he was really a true psychopath, and if I really had managed to give him a beat-down, one of my sisters or my mother really would have paid the price. So I still have the scars, but I don't blame myself anymore. I'm also glad you survived. Never blame yourself for that bullying.
I was bullied too. It most definitely left scars and changed me as a person. I'm also extremely resentful of the kids who tortured me. I was I could say I've come full circle about it all but I know better. It leaves scars and has affected my self confidence and body image to this day.
I get angry when I hear stories like yours. Especially happening at schools. I am so sorry this happened to you. Every Friday schools need to hold anti bullying pep rallies. It has gone on far too long. Parents sometimes have no idea their kids are doing things that hurt others. I could tell you my sons story, but not mine to tell. I’ll just say he struggled, got better, got popular and then became so disgusted with the kids in school he has withdrawn from school, sports, everything. This song for me represented my first marriage and divorce. I think its success was from the rawness of the feelings behind it. Good luck in your life! You aren’t alone.
This song helped me through my split with my cheating ex. Once I learned that she lied to me from day one, and that she was sleeping around willy nilly, this song hit home. I finally understood that I never knew her, so how could I miss someone I never knew...
In effect, you created a fictional person. Makes perfect sense that you could miss that fictional person while not wanting to have anything to do with the real person. In your mind, they aren't really the same person. To get over one ex, I had to accept that the fictional person I cared so much about in effect died. I still miss that fictional person and hope I never meet the real one again.
I was a beer vendor at 3 River Stadium when Genesis played there. I can't remember who else was on the bill but. I was blown away by Phil and co. Great show.
Phil is legendary. His lyrics, voice, and emotion pulled you in as if it were your own experiences. Love his solo work along with his work with Genesis. Maybe not the best at family life, but a great musician.
“In the air tonight”…always reminds me of risky business…train scene. It had that special something…how can he sing that over and over when it reminded him of his divorce?
Yet the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame hasn't put him in for his solo career. This guy was a TITAN along with Madonna, Michael Jackson, Prince, Whitney Houston, Van Halen & Duran Duran at that time!
Yeah, for some reason people seem to forget how many hits he had during that decade compared to other artists that doesn't even include songs that weren't hits that later became more popular than some of the hit songs he had.
I remember getting into my car one night around 1987 and my friend who was riding shotgun reached at the radio and said “Ok what kind of Phil Collins song do you want to hear because it’s all Phil Collins Radio.”
I was in Army Basic Training and we had received access to our personal items, clothes, walk men. I had a tape of “hello I must be going” And was in the latrine shaving and cleaning up and was singing “I don’t care anymore”. I was singing out loud and one of my drill sergeants walked in and yelled at me. “You better start caring” he said and made me drop and do push ups. 30 plus years later, I guess I’ll never forget it.
As someone who went through a divorce, I knew how the death of the relationship was much harder than the legal process. Phil expressed this so well in his music.
I’m 42 and I grew up on Phill and Genesis. I remember being a little girl, dancing in our living room with my parents to his songs. My son now 16 used to refer to what concert he wanted to watch as a small child as “Phill with hair and Phill without hair”, and I absolutely love this! He’s an icon! Oh, forgot to mention, this was my moms “Divorce Song” when she left my dad in 84.
I was born in late 77 and thankfully had a 1980's childhood. One of the absolute best things about being fortunate enough to live through that decade was all the cultural things going on. When I want to be transported back to the best times in my life 3 things get me there really easy in my head: Phil Collins music, Back To The Future movies and Miami Vice / A-Team, etc TV shows. You were a captive audience in the 80's...just enough tech to be able to experience so much but not enough to be consumed by it or miss out on actually living. That's what it represents to me I suppose
And thankfully I had a 1970's childhood (but no, this isn't going to be one of those contrarian posts). It seemed like all the "good" songs came out in the 70's, while the 80's was mostly unmemorable stuff. So I stayed focused on the 70's offerings. Then over time, I started to find exceptions in retrospect: "Well ok, there was U2... and ok there was Genesis... and there was..." After some time, I came to see 80's music in a different light. So I suppose the fundamental truth is that music is there to speak to each of us in our time. Plus, as you observed, stands ready to transport us back in time whenever we feel the urge... or the need. "You were a captive audience in the 80's...just enough tech to be able to experience so much but not enough to be consumed by it or miss out on actually living." Excellent observation! I raised a kid in the 90's, and getting them off the computer to get to their homework could be one of the more daunting tasks a parent faced (flash-forward another 15 years, and it turned out doing things on the computer was their real homework -- I just didn't know that at the time).
@@marcmcreynolds2827 I was born in 1978 and hated a lot of the 80s music when it was coming out (though not all of it--I really liked Phil Collins and a couple of others). I was really into the music of the 60s and 70s and still am. But I've gone back and listened to a lot of the stuff from the 80s and have been able to appreciate it now. Things change as you get older and have more experiences!
As I was going through a break of my family, I needed this song. It got me through intense despair. To allow the anger to flow was essential to getting through it. A devastating time. Thank you Phil, and Professor.
Phil is also an underrated producer. He produced the first solo album for Frida from ABBA, there’s something going on which included her only huge American hit “ there’s something going on“. Phil’s drumming is all over the song
He also produced, around the same time, Adam Ant's Strip album. His drumming is unmistakable, and he even had Frida do the spoken word part on the "Strip" song, since he was working on her album at the time!
@@Spiderific what woman didn’t love Adam Ant and his Strip song. My friend and I used to watch him that video on MTV all the time. Back when MTV was good.Phil really is underrated isn’t he? I mean I always thought he was a great drummer but I never knew all this.
Official Phil Collins record sales: 150 millions. Official Genesis record sales: 100 million. A quarter of a billion records! And drumming/producing for people like Eric Clapton, Frida from ABBA, drumming for Mike Oldfield, Peter Gabriel, Brand X. Phil is a proper musical legend!
To say that Phil Collins was bitter in "I Don't Care Anymore" would be an understatement. LOL - This was one of the songs that put Phil Collins (as a solo artist) on my radar and opened the door for me to his music. Some bands/artists were hit or miss. with Phil Collins, he was always a hit. Love his stuff, this one included.
th-cam.com/video/rxY4vLvgTTM/w-d-xo.html Phil just uploaded _“I Don't Care Anymore”_ a bit over a year ago. You should check it out on his TH-cam channel.

@@ProfessorofRock - I actually had tickets once back in the early 90's to a concert, but due to a family emergency I couldn't go, Gave the tickets to a friend so they wouldn't go wasted. She said he was awesome (of course). lol
I've had this song on repeat more than a few times in my life. And being able to scream out the lyrics while driving down the road is extremely cathartic.
Phil is great. He bought then donated many items to The Alamo Museum. It's uncanny how much he sounded like Peter Gabriel. I saw Genesis in 1978. He did a juggling act during the show.
I bought Phil’s coffee table book called “The Alamo and Beyond” several yrs back and it’s full of cool pictures and articles about the history of his collection. He apparently goes back to San Antonio every year to visit The Alamo and they even made him an honorary Texan. Haha.
We'll take him for sure!! The only thing left in San Antonio is the chapel and a couple of bunkhouses. It is chilling to be in the room where the women and children were hiding.
This song is a good healing one for a bad breakup, divorce, or in my wife's case her relationship with her mother. So much pain vocalized and relieved here. Helps to assure yourself that whatever happened won't keep you down, better things are possible. When you stop caring about it, it doesn't matter anymore. No more, no more, no more...
When I was going through my divorce, I had Blue October's Foiled on replay constantly. That record got me through a difficult and dark time. Music saves lives.
Phil is simply amazing…. There not an event in the 80’s that his music wasn’t playing. Even if he had a lot of competition he’s still created tons of great music that continues To be played
Speaking from my own heart break. About 12 years ago I was going through a very rough break up. I was cheated on and then gaslight into believing it was my fault and humiliated in front of all of my friends at the time. I probably listened to this song somewhere around 15 or 16 times in a row. I then worked up the courage to loudly dress them down in front of all of our mutual friends and let out all of my frustration and anger over the situation. After that I probably listened to this song at least a dozen more times in a row. It really helped, It helps me find a voice at that time
Love his music, both solo and with Genesis. He sings with such power and passion. Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now) hits me hard, reminding me of a difficult breakup. It's one of my top cathartic songs. It's one of the songs I have to play and sing at full volume.
He’s in my Top 5 musical artists. His songwriting, emotional content, his ability to inflect such emotion when he sings and in the lyrical content, not only his solo stuff, but Genesis also! Guys unreal, his collective works between the two will fill an entire day. “Against All Odds”…”Take Me Home”…”Please Don’t Ask”…”Throwing It All Away” and “We Said Hello Goodbye”, all tremendous tunes jam packed with emotional gems…it’s a go to for those times when you need a song to rely on to get you through !! Dig into those lyrics and you too will feel the warmth those songs bring…matter of fact, I’m gonna hit them up right now….thanks Phil !!
I am a child of 3 decades born in the 6-s grew up in the 70s and 80s the music was incredible I am so lucky to have grown up with all that, Phil Collins was a big part of my musical upbringing In the air tonight is absolutely my favorite of all his songs followed closely by I don't care anymore but there are none of his songs that I have ever disliked one of my favorite artists of all time.
This song came out the same time my parents started going through with their ugly divorce. No wonder it always brings back uncomfortable memories whenever I hear it.
Phil Collins has always been a favorite of mine. First heard his music when I was a bit too young to take the lyrics to heart, but the emotion behind his words was always crystal clear. He made me feel, and in those remembered feelings I feel young again. Got me through so much pain and anger and loss. For that I'll always be grateful.
I was born in 1971, so my entire teenage years in the 80s were described perfectly by Phil's solo works. And, after multiple failed relationships in the 90s, Phil's work comforted me again. My favorite is "You Know What I Mean." Thank you, Phil, for your words and music. My first wife's name was Andrea (Andi) as well. Sigh.
We are the same age! In my case, I pulled solace and inspiration from all sorts of genres of the time. Invisible Touch is one of my favourite albums. I do hope you're doing better with relationships these days - the most important one being with ourselves.
I heard the song,” Separate Lives” for the first time on the morning I had decided to leave my boyfriend and leave California… I cried all the way back to Colorado, and that song still makes me cry to this day! Great song….
As a Texan, I appreciate that Phil Collins does “Remember the Alamo!” He is a huge patron of the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas. Very surreal to hear him narrate the battle of the Alamo in the museum he paid to have built on the Alamo grounds.
All of Phill Collins music is absoluely phenomenal. Like the other greats of the time, he's an amazing musician. the 80's and early 90's had the best film and music, best pop culture.
Phil not only wears his heart on his sleeve, he sings it too. His first post divorce album is actually Duke, where he wrote many songs that went to Genesis, such as Please Don’t Ask, Misunderstanding, and part of the Duke suite where he shouts “take what’s yours and be damned”. Tony Banks even praised Phil for his vocals on Duke, as Phil became a real singer due to his strong emotional vocal chops.
Great call out. I was going to highlight Misunderstanding. I forgot about Please Don't Ask and hadn't heard the corrrelation with the Duke lyrics. Duke is my favorite Genesis album. Now I need to listen again. :)
It's certainly a discussion to be had for sure. All in all, it's a great song indicative of the 80s, even if made by a rather depressing moment. Cheers as always
The effects of divorce are awful and for me, I don't know if I will ever feel quite as good again. Phil definitely puts the massive exclamation point on the sadness, anger and depression I have been feeling.
@@ProfessorofRock It's rough going through divorce after 25 years of marriage. It really devastated me even though it's been since 2016 since it was finalized. Emotional, physical and spiritual pain. To be honest, I struggle a lot.
Depression means you're looking too much into the past, Anxiety means you're looking too much into the future. - Lao Tzu Changes are inevitable and if you focus (force yourself at first) on the current day and current week more so than what happened before or what's happening in the future you begin to make improvements. I got divorced in 2020, as you can imagine not exactly the ideal time given all the isolation of that year, but I've found great progress and hardly think about it anymore. Just like athletes have to work every day to stay at the top level physically we all have to work every day to stay at the top level mentally. 99 percent or so of people just don't do it because it isn't emphasized in our cultures
@@bishdizzle67 - Sorry you are still having rough times. In my experience, it is easy to feel rejected, also to keep wondering if we could have done something different, and so on. Those thoughts go round and round on the same track, never getting out of the ruts. If you can close such thoughts off for a while and make a new life, then you can get a new perspective and face those feeling and questions from a different - and stronger - place, with less guilt or trauma or shame, whatever mix of feelings you have been experiencing. I am grateful to have reached a better perspective just 2-3 years after my divorce, although I had help from others, including a therapist for about 6 months. Friends get tired of hearing of the angst, so therapy was very helpful - I could gripe and cry and whatever, plus my therapist could show me things I had not considered, which stopped the endless "loops" my thoughts would be on. I wish for you an easier time and more joy going forward.
What I love about Phil Collins is there is a song for whatever you are going through in life. Phil’s drums create a heartbeat for his music that hits deep inside of you. I Don’t Care Anymore is in my playlist for those days I need to rage. Phil Collins is a legend, no one comes close to his mastery of lyrics and music
Ha! When I left my egg donor and her husband after graduation, I left this album on the counter with a note saying ‘listen to every word! I’m gone forever, you don’t exist in my world. I don’t exist in your’s.’ Along with legal documents that removed me from any Wills. It was fabulous! My da laughed when I told him. He loved it. Loved Miami Vice! Epic show.
Phil is an icon! You couldn't listen to the radio for an hour in the 80's without either Phil Collins or Genesis song playing. It seemed like there was always a steady stream of songs from him. I can't even imagine growing up without those songs. Always loved his voice, and his music. But I have to say I think In the Air Tonight is my favorite. When he drops that beat....Volume up...every time :)
Phil Collins does with his music what Victor Hugo did in writing Les Miserables... He causes you to understand any emotion particularly all the kinds of love and through the full course of a relationship from start to finish. I feel very differently about this song as an adult than I did as a kid when it came out. As a kid I fast forwarded through it. But when my marriage was falling apart and I finally got mad and stopped trying to save it, this song helped me process that and give me the strength I needed to move on.
I had forgotten how much I listened to these songs when I was going through my divorce in the 80’s. I really didn’t know what Phil was going through we he wrote these songs until now. I was going through the same thing. Thanks Phil for putting my feelings on your album. It helped me get through a rough patch in my life.
I don't specifically think about that song, but Phil Collins was a wall of sound from the late 70's to the late 80's. An incredible talent, and a huge memory for me.
Absolutely love when you do anything on Phil Collins! As for this song and the album it’s on “Hello, I Must Be Going”, this is probably his darkest, most personal album he’s ever written and recorded in my opinion. The material from this album he rarely performed live since then, except for the major singles “You Can’t Hurry Love” and the song your covering “I Don’t Care Anymore”. The rest of the album is fairly dark, and that’s not a bad thing whatsoever. Phil Collins pretty much owned the 80’s.
Phil Collins in the 80's, was a lot like Alannis Morrisette in the 90's. Her lyrics spoke to so many people who had been treated badly, and were fed up with it. Her lyrics were angry, she was pissed, and she wasn't going to take the BS any more. Women LOVED IT!! You Oughta Know had such a rockin' guitar and driving beat, and such a memorable verse, you could sing along with it immediately! It was kind of a reflection of Phil's album, but from the woman's side. It was relatable to men and women, but Jagged Little Pill was full of heartbreak in one song, and then defiance and anger in another. She sold 33 million copies of that one album globally. I was a huge fan of Peter Gabriel, Genesis and Phil Collins in the 80's. They were all amazing!
From Sussudio to Land of Confusion and beyond (Tarzan soundtrack), Collins is simply one of the most talented musicians in my lifetime. Thanks for sharing.
The hypocrisy of a spouse who leaves and cheats on you because you are trying to build a successful career yet then wants the spoils of that career when it works out is astounding.
Ohh thanks for this reminder. Phil is at his best when he writes heartfelt stuff. I wish it would rain down, take me home and In the Air tonight. So good.
Phil Collins is the king of 80s raw emotional songwriting and singing. Many of his songs (along with Genesis) are on the soundtrack of my youth. His 1990 hit “Do You Remember” was on the CD player when I saw the tragic news of college basketball star Hank Gathers collapsing on the court and then passing away. The song reminds me to treasure the time and the people in our lives.
I’m so happy I got to see Phil in Charlotte NC a few years back. I’ve loved him since I was a kid in the 80’s. I can still hear in the Air tonight while driving through Myrtle Beach in the mid 80’s.
Phil Collins and Genesis are woven into the fabric of my early adult life. In high school, college and even during my first marriage, figuring out how to sort out my emotions was a battle and "I Don't Care Anymore" definitely was a lifeline. Back when A&E was still "Arts & Entertainment Television", they had some great concerts. One of the legendary artists they featured was Phil Collins. It was a fun night. Greatful for the man and his music. ❤
I've been a fan of Phil's since the early days of Genesis...Nursery Crimes..Selling England By The Pound and especially The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway.. they were an "import" band in the early days... I had mixed feelings when they became mainstream...but I Don't Care Anymore changed my mind in a positive way. We didn't lose our "underground" band. We shared them with the world. Thanks for all the memories Phil Collins.
I played this song a lot when I was going through a divorce in the late 90’s. He was my stalker & I just couldn’t make him accept it was over. It was so overwhelming… fell in love with “I don’t care anymore” during that difficult time in my life. ❤
Lived my whole life accompanied by Phil and his music, he echoed every hurt and rejection, love and acceptance. Carried me thru long nites and painful days. I survived as he did, now we simply grow old together. He can’t be replaced copied or substituted by anything, or anyone. Phil is in my soul. Thanks for all the memories of a lifetime, stay strong.
I was told by My OWN In-laws that I was Too nice to My wife, their daughter. That I should be tougher! "I don't care anymore" helped me greatly through my divorce
My m-i-l ripped "favorite" daughter a new one. Daddy's lil girl was slammed by him too. 16 years and pffft because (here it comes.....) "I'm not happy." Feel your pain, my man.
I’ve always loved this song. And I don’t see a problem that Phil recorded this song….it was obviously a catharsis for him. That very angry drumbeat later in the song says it all….you feel it, regardless of whether you’ve weathered the trauma of divorce or not.
Sort of off-topic, but I found extra respect for Phil Collins upon learning how fundamental he was in helping Robert Plant get his solo career started after the end of Led Zeppelin.
He also put up the singer songwriter John Martyn in his house after John's divorce that ran parallel to Phil's and played on two of John's most successful albums in 1980 and 1982, producing the second one as well. Plus he was big mates with Clapton through his divorce. So many divorced musicians!
I love your channel not only for the amazing things I learn from it about some of my favorite songs and artists. I also love it because often when watching one of your videos, I come away with yet another song to add to my Spotify list, one I'd previously overlooked or nearly forgotten about.
I was madly in love with Phil Collins. I believed he was looking for someone that could support his endeavors and trust his heartfelt relationship. Phil, I love You.
Almost 40 years on, I'll still always remember Phil Collins for being the only artist to perform both in London and in Philly on Live Aid day. Took the Concorde from London landed in Philly, and shot right out to the stadium to complete a very busy day.
@@jayintn71he sat in with Page, Plant and Jones who had already recruited Tony Thompson. Tony was not too happy to have to share the stage with Phil. I like Phil! I’m a drummer and he’s amazing on drums and as a songwriter, vocalist, etc. He didn’t really play that well however with the former Zep members at Live Aid.
Sure did, from Status Quo opening the show in London to We Are The World ended it all in Philly. When the London part of the concert had ended Bob Geldof came out to the stage after a while and just laid down for a bit. A few people hadn't left yet, and one kid came up said to Geldof, "Is That It?". That ended up being the title of Geldof's autobiography. @@ProfessorofRock
The song I remember resonating with me so strongly during my second divorce was also from Phil, or maybe with Genesis, not sure. It was "Throwing It All Away." We had a life a lot of people envied--good jobs, nice house, nice cars, two beautiful, healthy kids, and it wasn't enough when I began having some health issues. All these years later, though, I know it worked out the way it needed to. I found the person who had the compassion and loves me enough to deal with my blindness. Sometimes you have to let go of the wrong thing in order to have your hands free to hold on to the right one.
My husband left me four months ago when I got sick. I think maybe it was because I got sick, but I don't know for sure. He never told me why. He just left.
"In the air tonight" and " i don't care anymore" are my de-stress songs, while "Separate Lives", "Against All Odds", and "In Too Deep" are my fav ballads. "Land of Confusion" and "Another Day in Paradise" are my thinking and emotional songs. While "Billy (Don't You Lose My Number)" , "Sussudio", "Take Me Home", and "Invisible Touch" are my "general" favorite sing along songs. I'm sure I'm missing some; can't say enough about this man's talent, and if you watch vids of the later generation watching it now, they are floored. 70s and 80s music was no joke! And the 90s aren't far behind! Every decade has it's own contribution.
Grew up in the 80's so Phil Collins was a favorite for me until early 90's grunge changed the world, then he became a secret favorite for me to listen to alone lol...
Am I the only one that is gonna spend the next week listening to a Phil Collins playlist because of this video? Thank you, professor of rock for a top notch analysis.
I love Phil!! He was my crush back in the 80s. I loved his drum playing in his songs. I never realized it was about a divorce. I did wonder why he was so angry in some of them. Lol. He is still one of my all time favorite with Billy Joel!
About the time “in the air tonight“ came out I had just become a fan of Collins and was really enjoying his solo music, but I was unaware of the backstory. I also was going through a divorce at the time and it probably would’ve helped me work up a real strong anger. It wasn’t to be though because I didn’t find out about the connection to his divorce until years later so I just had to enjoy the music. And what music it was. That iconic drum break that Phil puts to such dramatic affect in his recent live shows is still one of the top five or six strings of notes played on percussion instruments ever.
I had the opportunity to see him for the first time at “I’m not dead yet” concert in Australia but had all his records from day one including Genesis. His words have impacted me in the loneliest hours and made me feel I was not the only one that felt like I did…lost. Thanks for bringing this talented artist to us and the respect you have shown was priceless.
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 Life or art? I was never a good artist! 😅😅 (But I draw a mean stick figure). Great song. Has a "Mama" type vibe to it........... the haunting beat and lyrics. Thanks for this one Professor. Oh, and I'll be around a bit longer......... surgery a success yesterday, so everyone is stuck with me. 😂
Phil admitted that 1985's "No Jacket Required" needed to be a happy, upbeat, uptempo album for him (and us too). It is my personal favorite Phil Collins album, with or without Genesis.

That my brotha, was a great homage to Mr. Phil Collins, and I appreciate your personal response to his music. The Professor of Rock monicker is definitely fitting.
Great song, great singer, and I consider myself a Genesis fanatic. This song helped me through a bad breakup, but even if no conflicts were associated with A Don’t Care Anymore, I still love that Collins anthem. And a shoutout to Chester Thompson for giving it balls during Phil’s live performances over the years! 👍🏾
I used to DJ Rock in the Airman’s Club in the 90’s, Phil Collins was often played and requested. In the Air Tonight has the best drum solo/transition I have ever heard.
You're such a tremendous artist in your own right. I feel like we're sitting across from one another sharing stories. Just brilliant content, so inspiring, informative and instructive. Every creator should take a page. Well done, sir.
Songs like "I Don't Care Anymore" are indeed "three chords and the truth". I've heard of the notion of "selling"" a song, but this doesn't need selling. The honesty is clear and gut-wrenching.
Nobody could express the beginning or end of a relationship like Phil. I Don't Care Anymore is my favorite on this album. I saw Phil at the Atlantic Records 40th anniversary which included every superstar group that ever recorded for Atlantic including Led Zeppelins remaining members playing together for the first time in 10 years and Phil performance was most the best out of all of them bar none and he wasn't even my favorite artist to perform that day. Great episode professor!!!
Collins in Belgrade, 2005, his first farewell tour, was the first big concert I'd been to. And it was as they say - you never forget your first. Amazing!
Some friends of mine still hang on to the urban myth about "In the Air Tonight" when Phil even admitted years ago that it was about his marital troubles. Phil has always known to be an "aw, shucks" kind of a guy, so this experience must have really pushed him to the breaking point. It'd be cool to have a pint with the man.
love Phil and Genesis. In high school in the late 80's. I had CD's and vinyl and made my own cassettes with my component stereo system that could rock the house. Take me home always flashes me back to an all night drive up north back in the 80's everytime. I am sure I injured my hearing driving around with his music blaring.
Phil Collins is an American institution regardless of being British. In the 80s my older brother had a cassette with Abacab on it. I reached into the front seat of his orange Honda Civic; mom up front and I played it 15 times while he ran into the store. Genesis and Phil have been on my playlist before there were playlists! The versatility of the man both instrumentally and his genre defying song choices. From the Supremes cover to the heartbreaking Against All Odds, Home by the Sea (burglars breaking into a haunted house, c'mon right?) , Mama in it's glorious creepy strangeness, the collaborative Easy Lover, the upbeat fun of Pseudio, to the anger and simplicity of I Don't Care Anymore which resonates for anyone who's had any go so badly that you just want it over ! No looking back in anger just as long as you "Let me Be" I don't care, I can't care or it'll eat me up so "No More!" , "I've got a million things to do with my time" then waste it thinking about you for another second! If all Phil was was an incredible percussionist it'd be enough but, Phil is incredible at nearly everything! God given talent! Such a gifted guy ! Who _can't_ relate to at least some of his songs ! Who hasn't enjoyed something from Phil?! Solo, w/ Genesis, a duet, Live Aid playing drums for the late John Bonham (an honor that nobody could have done a better job doing when Zeppelin reunited there! He was omnipotent in the 80s if you had a radio and the music is timeless! Obviously I can't say enough about Phil and his impact on my life! Such honesty in his music! Such imaginative stuff, he's "Like no other" !!!
I have said it before, and I will say it again.....when a woman gets to that point when she says her heart and gives the last warning of what is a final straw.....it is already too late. Him leaving, despite it all, was her neon sign that she will always be second and is of little value to him. There is no going back. It takes two to destroy a marriage. I was an 80's teen who loved his music, not knowing the context behind each song. Some of the greatest songs come from deep pain.
TBH, I had no idea that the music was tied to Phil's personal troubles. I just loved the music. And maybe that is the beauty of it, it helped Phil, and yet stands on its own. Fantastic talent.
This is far and away my favorite Phil Collins solo song on multiple levels - it applied to my own divorce and later to other relationships, and like Phil, it had a great cathartic effect for me and provided closure. When I saw him in 1994, he opened with this song and it absolutely rocked the house. Another great video, Professor.
I like that you covered what his ex might think, his ex sheds a whole new light on what really happened during the break up, I really like Phil and especially this song but there's always 2 sides to a story and glad you mentioned that! Love the videos you produce!!!
You are the very best commentator of music. I cannot stop praising you.... from Zimbabwe. That comment does not do justice to you. Each TH-cam video is a work of art. I wish I could listen to your work all day until I have hear them all...... I am not even a music guy, but your stuff is a work of art worthy of being listened to. I love silence, but I am forced to be Judas to my self because you are sooooo goooood! PLEASE DONT EVER DIE!!! Post script. I might download and listen to 5 songs a year. Honest! but all through the years he is one of the few. That comment shows how valuable he is to humanity.
Happy you’re still alive❤❤
I sympathize, very much. 15 years after those bad school years, my worst bully got out of prison (dealing drugs, running prostitution, multiple charges) and killed his ex-wife & mother-in-law while his little kids watched. He's been in prison ever since. Back in school, friends and relatives said I had to fight back and teach him a lesson. But one time during a brief break from his attacks, he said to me, "I can get to you any time I want. But if somehow I can't get to you, I can get to your sisters. Or your mother."
So for years I kept feeling like all that was my fault for not having the courage to stand up to him.
So happy you’re still here with us 😂
He earned his artistic licence, God bless you Phil.
Phil is a legend. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t love his music. I can feel it coming in the air tonight is epic! That drum solo!!
It's not a drum solo, it is the most overrated drum fill of all time.
He's always come off as whiny and self absorbed to me. Never have been a fan. Now, knowing this back story? Sheesh. I agree with his ex.
Are you sure? Each to their own but I think that's a vast overstatement of his popularity
This song helped me through my split with my cheating ex. Once I learned that she lied to me from day one, and that she was sleeping around willy nilly, this song hit home. I finally understood that I never knew her, so how could I miss someone I never knew...
Well said. Went through something similar with my divorce. How could you miss someone when you really never knew who the hell they are.
@@stevedj101Does anyone really know their partner? Especially when they are no longer partners?
We all feel that way sometimes. You think you trust someone, but then they break your heart and you discover something deeper.
@@williebeamish5879 true....
A huge percentage of the adult world is not the best at family life. And agreed ;)
I absolutely Love phil
Exactly. Gut wrenching
“In the air tonight”…always reminds me of risky business…train scene. It had that special something…how can he sing that over and over when it reminded him of his divorce?
Magic spoon cereal..wow never heard of it.
10.00 a box???
Phil is and will always be a legend! I listen to his music all the time and his drum solo in “Coming in the air tonight” is unforgettable!
He definitely is in a class of his own, and so many of his songs are so emotion packed! In the air tonight is my absolute favorite.
The drumming on that one is iconic.
even his version of True Colors is beautiful
Somehow he has a knack and nails it
Mine too! This and, Take a Look at Me Now - both so powerful.
Nobody had more hits in the 80's than Phil Collins and his ballads are some of the best ever.
I used to always watch the Mtv channel hoping for a Phil Collins video 😀
Yep, can’t get any grocery shopping done without hearing Phil.
Great story Hansel...... Having a walkman in the 80s was an essential part of anyones wardrobe. I did basic at Leonard wood and AIT at Gordon.
As someone who went through a divorce, I knew how the death of the relationship was much harder than the legal process. Phil expressed this so well in his music.
One of the toughest things to go through for sure.
I was a slow learner. I had 2 divorces. It IS like a death. Someone who has never experienced it has no idea how hard it is.
Knocks the hell out of you! Been five years and I still haven’t found all my stuffing!
All of it sucks so bad.
Hopefully by now you’re enjoying,”If she would have been faithful “ by Chicago. 🙌🏼
A celebration of the social disaster called “single mothers”.
I had no idea Phil Collins was in Genesis wow
@@BillySmith-np5zn yup, he was the drummer. When Peter Gabriel left the band to be a solo artist, Phill stepped up as lead singer. Pretty cool!

@@davebritton7648 no what is that?
I was born in late 77 and thankfully had a 1980's childhood. One of the absolute best things about being fortunate enough to live through that decade was all the cultural things going on. When I want to be transported back to the best times in my life 3 things get me there really easy in my head: Phil Collins music, Back To The Future movies and Miami Vice / A-Team, etc TV shows. You were a captive audience in the 80's...just enough tech to be able to experience so much but not enough to be consumed by it or miss out on actually living. That's what it represents to me I suppose
MacGuyver ! 💥😎
I loved that song!
He also produced, around the same time, Adam Ant's Strip album. His drumming is unmistakable, and he even had Frida do the spoken word part on the "Strip" song, since he was working on her album at the time!
It’s a great song. Phil might be the hidden star of the show on that one!

He also recorded drums for Tears for fears, if I remember correctly
And Robert Plant and Howard Jones! Legend.

This song is the epitome of bitter.
Awesome! Where'd you see them?
@@ProfessorofRock Austin, Texas. Frank Erwin Center
A juggling act? So cool!

Phil is simply amazing…. There not an event in the 80’s that his music wasn’t playing. Even if he had a lot of competition he’s still created tons of great music that continues
To be played
Speaking from my own heart break. About 12 years ago I was going through a very rough break up. I was cheated on and then gaslight into believing it was my fault and humiliated in front of all of my friends at the time. I probably listened to this song somewhere around 15 or 16 times in a row. I then worked up the courage to loudly dress them down in front of all of our mutual friends and let out all of my frustration and anger over the situation. After that I probably listened to this song at least a dozen more times in a row. It really helped, It helps me find a voice at that time
I love this song and have never gotten sick of it. This is probably because it didn’t get the airplay like In The Air Tonight did.
Love his music, both solo and with Genesis. He sings with such power and passion. Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now) hits me hard, reminding me of a difficult breakup. It's one of my top cathartic songs. It's one of the songs I have to play and sing at full volume.
Collins’ vocal on that one was exceptional.
Yes such a powerful song! My favorite hands down
He’s in my Top 5 musical artists.
My favorite is Take Me Home. He’s phenomenal. Always loved him.
This song came out the same time my parents started going through with their ugly divorce. No wonder it always brings back uncomfortable memories whenever I hear it.
Hugs 🫂
Sigh.
Abacab was a pretty cool song.
That’s a fact right there!
He sure showed up Ozzy huh

Perfect song for breakups, divorce, or just not wanting to be a part of something anymore.
I loved that episode of Miami Vice Phil Collins was in. I loved the show in general, true, but recognizing him playing a villain was a real treat.
The effects of divorce are awful and for me, I don't know if I will ever feel quite as good again. Phil definitely puts the massive exclamation point on the sadness, anger and depression I have been feeling.
Thanks for sharing. How are you doing today? I know I still have up and down myself..

Changes are inevitable and if you focus (force yourself at first) on the current day and current week more so than what happened before or what's happening in the future you begin to make improvements.
He sells the emotion pretty well and he means it.
I’m curious about the song “mama” now. I love Phil Collin’s. His vocals are truly amazing. He is a genius vocally and musically.
But when my marriage was falling apart and I finally got mad and stopped trying to save it, this song helped me process that and give me the strength I needed to move on.
i had a dream
I’m glad this song saved you Jennifer.

I was going through the same thing. Thanks Phil for putting my feelings on your album. It helped me get through a rough patch in my life.
I spent 11 years with my ex and this music helped me get past the loss of the woman i swore at one time was my soulmate. Thank God for Phil Collins!
I don't specifically think about that song, but Phil Collins was a wall of sound from the late 70's to the late 80's. An incredible talent, and a huge memory for me.
I think writing from such true life experiences is what made the songs so great. The true heartfelt emotion bleeds through to the listeners soul.

16 years and pffft because (here it comes.....) "I'm not happy."
Feel your pain, my man.
Oh, they can eff off! Hope you’re in a better place now.
He’s a selfless man.
He also put up the singer songwriter John Martyn in his house after John's divorce that ran parallel to Phil's and played on two of John's most successful albums in 1980 and 1982, producing the second one as well. Plus he was big mates with Clapton through his divorce. So many divorced musicians!
I was too young to understand all that..I just felt and loved his music! Thanks for reminding me about such a great artist! So many feels.
He's such an amazing artists. Did you watch that live?
I did. I was a huge Phil Collins fan, and was disappointed that he played the exact same songs both times.
One of the 80s trivia facts I will never forget! It’s impressive how Phil made it to the states just in time!
Love Phil Collins. I graduated from high school In 86
The song I remember resonating with me so strongly during my second divorce was also from Phil, or maybe with Genesis, not sure.
Haha, you escaped from the loudness of it all…
Divorce...I absolutely wish it on no one... Many years have passed and still feel empty
Sad…

Life or art?
I was never a good artist! 😅😅 (But I draw a mean stick figure).
Great song. Has a "Mama" type vibe to it........... the haunting beat and lyrics.
Thanks for this one Professor. Oh, and I'll be around a bit longer......... surgery a success yesterday, so everyone is stuck with me. 😂
Mama was very haunting. Wishing for a speedy recovery Roger
Phil admitted that 1985's "No Jacket Required" needed to be a happy, upbeat, uptempo album for him (and us too). It is my personal favorite Phil Collins album, with or without Genesis.
You could say Phil made a solo career out of separation/divorce songs! Great artist who I saw in concert July 1994.
Where'd you see him?

I have been a Phil Collins fan since i was a young girl (50+ yrs old now) I still have his pictures i cut out of a "Teen Beat" magazine in the 80s.. love that man and his music still!
As great as "In the Air Tonight" is--it's nearly perfect--my favorite solo Phil tune is "I Missed Again." I absolutely love that song.
Yeah, these songs have gotten me through a lot in my life, from kid to adult. And have also given me a healing balm, peace, and even joy.
There's another great song on that album "Don't Let Him Steal Your Heart Away". After hearing this story, I can't help but think that's about her too.
Ha, I wrote this before I watched the whole video
That is a great song. Heart wrenching!
Good observation. I thought the same thing.
Hold you like China always gets to me. These songs were so relatable at a time when he was speaking directly to me, and me alone. ❤
I have been a fan of Phil Collins for a long time, mainly because of the raw emotion he puts in his songs. Love his version of Groovy kind of Love
The video was fantastic.

What year was this? I wish I was there!
Nothing makes cheating right though.
There’s black, there’s white, and we always want to get to the grey areas. Acknowledge both sides.
@@mgratk Totally agree! According her and other sources during the divorce proceedings he had cheated several times before she ever did
