Vex was forced in and Ahkshan got shoved in Yorick's motives, bcuz riot prefered to give that important role to a sexy shirtless man than a sad buff gravedigger that had an actual connection to the ruination with the mist maiden and whose whole purpose in life was to bonk the ruined king. Heck! Not even Gwen seemed that necesary, despite being tied to viego and isolde, seeing as even wild rift forgot about her. -sigh- at least LoR did a fair attempt in giving gwen and vex something to do post ruination that makes sense with their stories.

Akshan's entire existence is redundant. While I genuinely like Gwen as a foil to Viego as well, she was also admittedly not wholly necessary. Hell that same comic as Senna sealing Viego in Camavor instead of Gwen, so all Gwen ultimately did in the story was make everyone's Sentinel outfits, I guess. But yeah, Vex got it by far the worst. The premise of an actual Shadow Isles yordle is fun, however it was butchered in execution... Like nearly everything involved with that event.

They've already committed to it, referencing the events that happened there in multiple stories. That's why I choose to just have my own version of the canon instead.

Like, where the fuck was Lux when darkness was sweeping over Demacia? How did Swain react to the Black Mist in his city, considering that it supposedly causes demons to go feral? Sejuani apparently doesn't know anything about, asking Olaf if he'd ever tell her "why he went south." The Harrowing lasted what feels like maybe a week and the whole world barely seems to have been impacted at all. Pantheon and Vayne are like the only ones who seem to have really been affected by it any meaningful way.
Iirc Pix is the most serious aspect of Lulu, so the dual dynamic of adhd Lulu dragging Vex around while Shadow constantly tries to befriend Pix who just wants no part of shadow would be hilarious You could do a cartoon with them
Vex is my second most favorite Yordle right after Poppy and it's funny because they have the exact opposite personalities, Poppy never wants to surrender while Vex literally goes ¨give up, I did¨ they'd make a nice couple in LoR I'll have to try that deck out

Speaking of the Ruination, I always thought they'd be able to retcon Vex's involvement by giving her role to Karthus, make him be empowered by Viego and that's how he manages to spread the mist all over, I mean it's essentially what the character wants to do. Then again, they could just retcon the whole thing and re-tell it with a better focus. Still, she looks fun in PoC, so thats good.
Vex is pretty tied up in viego's whole deal though. I don't think it matters all that much cuz Ruination is functionally soft canon so they never have to dig into it.
Karthus is the perfect henchman for any Shadow Isles Bad Guy that it is shocking they haven't done anything with him. He is a herald of death and wants to spread the 'gift' of the Shadow Isles across the lands.

Personally I want to see Veigar and Poppy both ending up accidentally adopting Vex, Veigar would be a fun supportive parent to Vex's dark side while Poppy would be able to bond with Vex over the experience of feeling out of place in Bandle. In fact I want this to be a multi-season 2D animated series
Vex's 2-star with Wicked Harvest seems like it could be pretty great. Those story landmarks seem like they're taking inspiration from class cards (and sagas, somewhat) in Magic - play it, then pay costs to get progressively better effects
I've never heard a better description of the ruination event than "tonal problems up the ass and through the mouth".. it literally made me quit lol and when I remember it... I still can't believe it happened xD
I think it's actually going to be a Nocturne rework card rather than Lillia. Why? Because in both their level up animations Vex and Lux seem to be beating back a nightmare.
While the Sentinels of Light event overall definitely did have tone problems, I actually feel like Vex is the only character who can get away with that kind of tonal dissonance between her personality which is kind of played for laughs and the heinous things she's doing, and it's specifically BECAUSE she's a yordle. Like, yordles are fey-ish creatures, and while all the yordles are played for comedy, at the end of the day, the fey are fucking SCARY. Lulu (and not a yordle but Zoe too) already is a character who has some existential dread floating around at the edges hidden beneath her layers of goofy whimsy with the things she'll just casually do to people without a second thought, and Vex feels like an easy fit for a more deliberately malicious fey-type creature. Sure, her emo goth act may be entertaining, but just because she acts kind of funny, doesn't mean that a nigh-immortal being of pure magic with a dislike of happiness and joy wouldn't be extremely dangerous and not someone you'd ever want to risk meeting.
I feel like the ruination is EXTREMILY BLOATED OF CHARACTERS THAT DONT FIT, i feel like the only characters who deserved to be in where. Viego Yorick Isolde Lucian Senna Illaoi Maokai And all the other shadow isle champion who have to do with viego being kalista, hecarim and thresh But like we got twice the size we needed and most of those didnt have to do initially or didnt even existed
Vex was going to have a skin similar to Thresh "unbound" but Rito canceled it because according to them they wanted to turn the page of the event, ah but Gangplank skin came out...
I'm now trying to figure out how Vex and Lulu go as a comedic duo. I think Vex and Teemo would be the funniest combination personally (Vex thinking she's the straight man to Teemos antics, but actually Teemo is the straight man who gets things done but with a veneer of silliness)
Vex felt more like an Embodying parody of Nihilism. like how Veigo wants the whole world to suffer because me was/is suffering. Vex being the exaggeration of that Doom and Gloom. turns into a Gloomy Emo, misery and Boredom are normal, happiness and positivity is Bleh Yordles are Designed in their very lore to be 1 thing and hyperfixate on that 1 thing. and in her case, it's the self Defeating nature of Nihilism
16:53 of course riot is gonna do something with their champions. They're gonna do so much with yasuo, ahri, akali, lux and pyke. And maybe, if we're lucky, they'll tweet about Vex on her release anniversary or something.
I will just say, this is very similar to the issue of making Arcane Heimerdinger and League/LoR Heimerdinger into the "same character". Arcane is a very dramatic and serious story, meanwhile Heimerdinger is, like all the other yordles a fun character by nature. Like, I can not imagine Arcane Heimer going into Bandle city. Hes just a much too serious character, who has to deal with real life problems, instead of just being a larger than life faerie tinkerer
I tried getting into LoL "lore" on I think 2 occasions. I didn't succeed, because it seemed to be very contradictory. Of course the fact that I didn't play the game didn't help - maybe had I known that each type of lore was tied to different "mode" of the game (or at least was supposed to be) it would be more understandable? I don't think tonal shift difference/dissonance alone make such character incompatible with what is supposedly happening (I read a bit on this, but I'm not sure how canonical it is) - it just makes it incredibly tough to make it properly. And given state of the Riot's wiki/information page - I don't think they are capable of executing it in a manner that wouldn't be jarring at some point. VA work is very good. Most effects are also done well - the "gloom" effect - the one you called "Joker's smile" - while I didn't catch that prior to you I did notice that it felt a bit cartoonish. Though given the art style in game, it doesn't clash that hard. People who play it would have to tell me if it fits their vision of "gloom".
Vex absolutely Deserved better than her shitty entrance in one of the most botched events in League History. Wish I could go back in time and tell them to actually make the ruination good and release vex after it so she wasn't roped into such a serious plot.
I know you hate her being in ruination but it’s my favourite thing about her 😂 it’s so funny and it didn’t ruin the story for me because vex isn’t something that I think of when I imagine ruination I forget she was even there so it kind of exists in my mind as a funny Easter egg in her story but I can see how it wouldn’t be enjoyable if you’re trying to take ruination seriously
I absolutely love Vex and that she is finally in LoR, but I am a bit disappointed both in the level-up animation and her "just do the thing but again" level 2 design
This is just reminding me and bringing up my anger at riot over wasting characters they already have to push out new ones or just give the light to already popular ones. Rell's whole mission was to stop Morde when he was to return and Morde was coming to LoR so that's perfect! Nah. Just have Nilah do it, and lets give her two stories. Karthus was perfect for the black mist, able to enhance Veigo's power and Karthus loves death super loves death he would have been all for it. Nah. A goth yordle instead. Poppy was perfect to be a sentinel of light and it would finally tie up her story of her realising she is the hero Demacia needed. Nah. Give it to Vayne who riot still can't decide if she's a sociopath or not. There are so many champions that could come to LoR and so many people are excited for these new possibilities. Nope. Instead let's release Lux a second time because god forbid they give her a rework and give that new champion spot to someone who deserves it.

Don't you think that it is kind of reactive, reductive, and tropy to say a character cannot be introduced in a way because they clash tonally with the story? You are functionaly saying a story must roll out in a way that is tonally homegenous to be considered good. I find this to be a quite conservative view on art, that art itself must conform to some arbitrary standards. I believe that riot could have made the story of Vex work in the ruination they just were not competent enough to pull it off. Making some sort of essentialist argument on the nature of tone is dismissive and elitist. Often times contrast in tone is an excellent way to actually highlight the tone or emotion you are trying to express by juxtiposing it against the other tonal elements of the story. Dismissing tonal incongruity as a tool for an artist is reducing the narrative pallet an artist can work with, for example the song "Master of the House" in Les Miserables is really funny because of the contrast between the tone of the song compared to the rest of the musical. The song is singing about how terrible the master of the house is but the tone is jocular and ribald and thus makes the dramatic contrast of the seriousness and earnestnesd of the rest of musical stand out. With the right writer I believe that Vex could have been introduced through the ruination in a way in which she fulfilled this role, and to say that it couldn't have worked betrays a lack of imagination.
This. I do think the tone problems are elsewhere in the story, but usually the problem with League stories (and most mediums really) is execution, not concept

Lulu (and not a yordle but Zoe too) already is a character who has some existential dread floating around at the edges hidden beneath her layers of goofy whimsy with the things she'll just casually do to people without a second thought, and Vex feels like an easy fit for a more deliberately malicious fey-type creature. Sure, her emo goth act may be entertaining, but just because she acts kind of funny, doesn't mean that a nigh-immortal being of pure magic with a dislike of happiness and joy wouldn't be extremely dangerous and not someone you'd ever want to risk meeting.
My guess is in Vex’s nightmare Grimm is her boyfriend and she absolutely hates it

I'm now trying to figure out how Vex and Lulu go as a comedic duo. I think Vex and Teemo would be the funniest combination personally (Vex thinking she's the straight man to Teemos antics, but actually Teemo is the straight man who gets things done but with a veneer of silliness)

Yordles are Designed in their very lore to be 1 thing and hyperfixate on that 1 thing. and in her case, it's the self Defeating nature of Nihilism

I know the skinline is massively oversaturated at this point, but I think Vex is a perfect fit for a Star Guardians team of spectacular girlfailures.
I will just say, this is very similar to the issue of making Arcane Heimerdinger and League/LoR Heimerdinger into the "same character". Arcane is a very dramatic and serious story, meanwhile Heimerdinger is, like all the other yordles a fun character by nature. Like, I can not imagine Arcane Heimer going into Bandle city. Hes just a much too serious character, who has to deal with real life problems, instead of just being a larger than life faerie tinkerer
I tried getting into LoL "lore" on I think 2 occasions. I didn't succeed, because it seemed to be very contradictory. Of course the fact that I didn't play the game didn't help - maybe had I known that each type of lore was tied to different "mode" of the game (or at least was supposed to be) it would be more understandable?
I don't think tonal shift difference/dissonance alone make such character incompatible with what is supposedly happening (I read a bit on this, but I'm not sure how canonical it is) - it just makes it incredibly tough to make it properly. And given state of the Riot's wiki/information page - I don't think they are capable of executing it in a manner that wouldn't be jarring at some point.
VA work is very good. Most effects are also done well - the "gloom" effect - the one you called "Joker's smile" - while I didn't catch that prior to you I did notice that it felt a bit cartoonish. Though given the art style in game, it doesn't clash that hard. People who play it would have to tell me if it fits their vision of "gloom".

Vex absolutely Deserved better than her shitty entrance in one of the most botched events in League History. Wish I could go back in time and tell them to actually make the ruination good and release vex after it so she wasn't roped into such a serious plot.
I know you hate her being in ruination but it’s my favourite thing about her 😂 it’s so funny and it didn’t ruin the story for me because vex isn’t something that I think of when I imagine ruination I forget she was even there so it kind of exists in my mind as a funny Easter egg in her story but I can see how it wouldn’t be enjoyable if you’re trying to take ruination seriously

This is just reminding me and bringing up my anger at riot over wasting characters they already have to push out new ones or just give the light to already popular ones.
Rell's whole mission was to stop Morde when he was to return and Morde was coming to LoR so that's perfect! Nah. Just have Nilah do it, and lets give her two stories.
Karthus was perfect for the black mist, able to enhance Veigo's power and Karthus loves death super loves death he would have been all for it. Nah. A goth yordle instead.
Poppy was perfect to be a sentinel of light and it would finally tie up her story of her realising she is the hero Demacia needed. Nah. Give it to Vayne who riot still can't decide if she's a sociopath or not.
There are so many champions that could come to LoR and so many people are excited for these new possibilities. Nope. Instead let's release Lux a second time because god forbid they give her a rework and give that new champion spot to someone who deserves it.

Vex in LoR is such a happy surprise, ironically enough. I liked the sad yordle a lot and i'm glad they're giving her something new to do after that trainwreck of event.

Don't you think that it is kind of reactive, reductive, and tropy to say a character cannot be introduced in a way because they clash tonally with the story? You are functionaly saying a story must roll out in a way that is tonally homegenous to be considered good. I find this to be a quite conservative view on art, that art itself must conform to some arbitrary standards. I believe that riot could have made the story of Vex work in the ruination they just were not competent enough to pull it off. Making some sort of essentialist argument on the nature of tone is dismissive and elitist. Often times contrast in tone is an excellent way to actually highlight the tone or emotion you are trying to express by juxtiposing it against the other tonal elements of the story. Dismissing tonal incongruity as a tool for an artist is reducing the narrative pallet an artist can work with, for example the song "Master of the House" in Les Miserables is really funny because of the contrast between the tone of the song compared to the rest of the musical. The song is singing about how terrible the master of the house is but the tone is jocular and ribald and thus makes the dramatic contrast of the seriousness and earnestnesd of the rest of musical stand out. With the right writer I believe that Vex could have been introduced through the ruination in a way in which she fulfilled this role, and to say that it couldn't have worked betrays a lack of imagination.
This. I do think the tone problems are elsewhere in the story, but usually the problem with League stories (and most mediums really) is execution, not concept

I also only brought it up because you literally said that you cannot slot the character into the ruination which is prescriptive judgement based on the tone of the character that removes nuance from the discussion. I like your work, hence watching the video, I just am worried about the ways in which assertions such as these flatten the discussion and lead to orthodoxic arguments on the nature of art.

I know nothing about LoL and I don't care, but I did watch video for fun and nothing here struck me as being said as "this is the ultimate truth". I suggest watching his rant on this channel. In current days of disclosing every time that "this is my opinion", it might help you to understand why it was said that way.
And to @3BSkyen - IDK how often you have to deal with this type of comment, but it might be worth trying to answer the question. Even when it is based on wrong assumption. IDK which rabbit hole it's going to go and you might have seen it too often go in the bad direction, but that person doesn't (yet) strike me as "bad" or anything. And definitely not "bad faith". Depends on how you feel and obviously your expectations. And how you feel that day.
