    Get a thermoelectric fan to spread the heat from the wood stove around the cabin.

    Try an electric blanket. For only 40-90W each hour, you can stay super warm.

    Don't get discouraged.
    Get a truck, and get a transport water tank .
    You will need it.
    The elevation is why your generator is not working.
    You'll need to rejet it or have it adjusted to the elevation.
    Mister buddy is a must.
    Chainsaw a must.
    At least 3 cord of wood for the winter months.
    GOOD LUCK.
    SOLAR SHOWER IS A MUST AS WELL.

    Hi Nate and Shannon, just my experience living in the snow and somewhat wet conditions in the Lake Tahoe area, keep you wood burning pile covered. It is much harder to start a fire with wet wood, even just a little bit of moisture can affect the wood. Also, love the golf clubs in the tub and the fake faucets. Not sure why I thought it was really funny. Thanks for allowing us to follow your journey! 😄

    A couple of things you might think about… A fan that works off of the heat rising from your woodstove. This will move the air about your cabin really fast and will make it more even heated. The next item I would suggest is a rechargeable USB showerhead. You can heat your water on the stove and then shower in the bathtub with the showerhesd. 1 gallon of boiling water will heat up 4 to 5 gallons of cool water to a decent bath temp.

    • @rosewoodsteel6656
      @rosewoodsteel6656 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In total agreement with the fan, Michelle. A few years ago an ice storm took out our power for a week, with the temperatures in the 20's and teens. It was then that we discovered how important our wood stove blower was. Without the fan, we had to sleep in front of the stove, in sleeping bags. With the fan energized, the stove heated the entire room to a comfortable temperature and kept our house from freezing. We now have a backup generator with the wood stove blower on one of the circuits. By the way, there are a number of those "heat powered" fans, that are energized by just placing the fan on the top of a stove. Have you had experience with these?

    • @michelewalters9421

    Oh, and heating mattress covers will keep you toasty in bed. Work better than electric blankets that go on top of you. You can cover the windows with clear plastic with wood laths around the edges & that will help hold in a lot of heat. Can't really see out the windows, but lots of people in cold climates do this & it works really well.

    I spent a good part of a Northern Wisconsin winter in a hunting cabin with a old wood stove. Temps around -10°f. Incase u don't know you should get the house really warm before bed, then fill the stove with hard wood and shut down all the VENTS so it burns slowly and by morning you should still have enough coals that u just have to add wood. Another interesting idea I've seen was a radiator system built from a water heater. Very cheap and safe. 😎

    • @milcotto4153
      @milcotto4153 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you starve a wood stove for oxygen, you will get soot build up in the pipe, which again will highten the risk drastically for a fire in the pipe/cabin. They seem to be far away from any fire station, so they must be very carefull when using both the wood stove and propane heaters. I would not have built a DIY radiator system. It can explode from the pressure in the system if you don't know what you are doing.

    • @terrynewell8968
      @terrynewell8968 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@milcotto4153 I would re-read my comments. If you start every day with a hot fire that doesn't happen. Plus it's customary to clean your pipe every once in a while. Also the person I know with the water heater heat, put it in 30 years ago. Nothing blew up. Plus I'm sure they would confirm any info before they did anything.

    Welcome to The Land of Enchantment! Northern New Mexico has a lot of bio diversity. The East Mountains (Sandia Mountains) are only a few minutes East of Albuquerque. North on Highway 14 (the scenic route from ABQ to Santa Fe), and South of i40 is the tiny town of Tijeras the gateway to a Scenic Hwy 337 (lots of cyclists, hikers around) which winds through the Cibola National Forest, further South there is affordable 'edge of the County' land near Yrisari (meadows and ponderosa pine forest) that is less than an hour from Albuquerque, half an hour from the town of Edgewood. Lots of Wild West history around this area (Pueblo Native tribes, Spanish territory, gold rush). Albuquerque is a great hub city, and lots of nearby towns an hour away in each direction. Plus New Mexico has legal weed and free college now.
    Hope y'all love the high desert, it's beautiful.

    Hi Nate and Shannon. Another great vid. Just a quick note. You talked about possibly going to get a generator. You mentioned, though good, they are expensive. Before you put that money out, it would be an idea to go to Harbor Freight and take a look at a Predator. I've had one for over three years, and for me the best money for the product. Got it on a sale day, so it was $700. I also got the 2 year warranty, which if anything happens, just bring it back and they give you a new one. No service shop, no repair. And it runs quiet, about 55 decibels. There are a lot of reviews from other RV'ers for this unit. Long Long Honeymoon did a review, as did many others. I think it's worth looking it up to see if this may be what you need, for what you want to do. Thanks.

    Thank you for taking us along on your journey. A story... back in the late 1990s my husband and I decided to build a shed with a loft on some camping lots we own. My husband took some inherited hand saws and had them sharpened. I showed him a gas generator, but he said, we don't need that. I went back to the store and bought the generator when I got paid. After the piers were in and the floor, we were getting ready to build the rafters and he got through two cuts with the hand saws and I said could you help me unload a few things. He said why did you bring the power tools, there is no electricity out here? Then he saw the generator. He just shrugged and said "A big job deserves a new tool." That generator still works, but it is louder and uses more gas than the newer ones. Thank you again for taking us along.

And I was a skinny little thing. Other bonus of working outside now is snakes would be too cold to move much.
    If you two do get too cold in the house, sleeping in the loft is much warmer, as is setting up a tent in the living room and hanging out in there til the woodstove is making things toasty again.

    Regarding the generator…it’s carbureted so it more than likely needs the fuel reduced which is a screw on the side of the carburetor. You are at a higher altitude so the air is thinner, less air requires less fuel for the engine to run correctly. If you smell a lot of gasoline while trying to get it started then it is most definitely your issue. Good luck!

    Thanks for the videos. Suggest getting one of those fans that sit on top of the stove and uses the heat from the stove to power the fan.
