Excellent. Experimented with this a little, many years ago, with my Sony DV Camcorder connected to the TV. I've still got the DV Camcorder. Think i need to dig that out again for another play.
A vidicon tube camera gives better results because it operates very differently than a newer CCD or CMOS image sensor, and has a lot of image lag. The VHS camcorder you are using uses a CCD image sensor, which doesn't have image lag and doesn't look as cool as the tube-based cameras. Only the very first VHS camcorders used a vidicon tube. Most vidicon tube-based cameras have the recorder as a separate unit (before the camcorder), but you can get an adapter that will allow you capture the composite output of the camera. I have a 1983 Panasonic Newvicon camera (Panasonic's special version of the vidicon tube, Hitachi had their own version called the Saticon, and Sony had the Trinicon) and the video feedback results are much more psychedelic. In my experience, the Newvicon tube gives better results than a regular vidicon.
EIAJ video cameras from the early '80s and the '70s and back are cool for this too. These use tube based video capture as well. Some are even black and white. Sometimes you'll find one that's been well-loved and the degradation of the image quality gives an interesting additional effect. I find this tends to give unique character to individual units.
Thanks thanks! Hmm some sort of capture card is technically best if you can get one, but it's sooo easy to just point a digital camera at the screen and record normally
I use a VCR that i pass the signal from the video camcorder through to the TV screen. If digital is important to your creative process then capture it from the tape after you've recorded what you want.

whattya think it would cost for a camera for this in 2022 and can i do it with a Flat screen? I have a nearly 20 year old first gen flat screen with RCAs. Not sure if it will work like a Tube TV would. Or did when I did this in the past.
decent with a flat screen, a little more foggy in my experience. i usually see VHS-C or Hi-8 camcorders on local classified ads for $50 ~ $300. Basically the people selling them are seniors who think anything "retro" is very valuable so they expect alot, and can never actually sell them. The only people who buy these are skateboarders and sometimes artists haha. Sometimes you will get lucky at a flea market or thrift store and see them thrown away for pennies. With alot of patience and searching you might get a free one, I got a bunch :]
@@ultimate-grand-tutorial962 in the past I just used a standard VHS cam Corder this was 20 years ago lol should be able to find one cheap.. Doesn't have to record even. Thanks for the quick reply. Wish I would of paid attention and saw that video feedback got some attention. I was just bored at home the first time I discovered it. Have a great day.
Feel like a flat screen looks like a screen which makes sense. The tube rounded and glossy the glare and reflections would just become part of the image.
Many interesting variables can also be had when using gear in decline; CRTs with massive color bleed or shift, vidicon tube video cameras with ghosting and burn-in, etc. try a video titler and/or other sources mixed in via a video mixer.
@@ultimate-grand-tutorial962 Hey! Maybe you have an idea how how can this be achieved? th-cam.com/video/TQw-Kv4XZZ4/w-d-xo.html The background seems to be modified by the musicians movement and so, but i cannot get a clear idea of what is going on
most of this footage is analog , done with AV cables not HDMI, but that is possible. if you can get a live signal from some kind of digital camera to display on your laptop (like using OBS software obsproject.com/download with a webcam) you could do it
l you can use a laser light to stop and spin objects ,u can also use your hand on screen to spin stop and control objects,,,,this is a mini cern and could prove very dangerous,,,,
subjectively true for your setup ;) your fb isn't super bubbly, try to minimise contrast, different cameras.. different things can happen :) it's nice if your cable box displays the channel number on the screen but you have a bubbly setup
This is how the early Doctor Who intros were created.
That effect was used in the original 1963-1973 Doctor Who intro.

in the 90s i spent hours doing this with my roommates vhs recorder. if you use a CD and stick it in the frame you can do some crazy shit.
tally hall used this in their music video for “Good Day”, so creative! and your video is super informative and helpful! tysm!
thanks so much!
👍🏾👍🏾Brilliant! Thanks for sharing this, my Friend. Best Wishes to you.
One of my favorite videos on TH-cam. 😁 this is amazing
not many video art tutorials on youtube, thank you for this!

Love your gifs, I've always been interested in making some of my own. Thanks for this video! :)
ah thanks very much!
hope it helps, more to come :D
Thanks for making this video, perfect instructions, cool too view, very useful and easy to understand..👏👏👏👌👍
Very good video explaining the art of video feedback!
thankss!
Thanks. Very useful. I aim to try this in a few weeks. Would you have suggestions for recording the output?

the creative procedure @ 0:56 is the best!
Yeah... but can't circuit bending play a role in trying to augment and customize the video as well?
@@justFUNdimples was that circuit bending? Haha. But you are definitely right.

I used to do this after we'd been out clubbing in the late 90s, we used to call it E vision!
E vision sounds fun xD
Thank You.
yer welcome
Is there any possible way to get the feedback on time without the time lag?
i think you'd need a system that worked at the speed of light! possibly? that would be badass
If you want instant visual feedback, you’re better off using a CRT monitor because they have much lower display lag than an LCD.
could anyone tell me what do I need to do to get this, step by step? thanks x
is there a specific look you're trying to get?
