@Intransitman: that was a battle the Southern Pacific passively lost when the freeway was widened to it's current state. Compare that to Santa Fe holding out on CalTrans w/ the 210 freeway so they could have enough room for 2 main tracks in they needed it. It worked out for the gold line.
I'm surprised they don't take the two inside lanes away from the freeway and double track the line. Though they should string catenary and run EMU's every 20 minutes.

@RCKTBOY7 It runs through Texas as well, El Paso, San Antonio, and Houston are points of interest.
