This week is all about the sleeve and how you can determine if it's a good match for the armhole. Watch the video to get some inside information about bicep ease, sleeve cap ease and optimal cap height for a good fitting set in sleeve.

Your series of videos on sleeves here, have given me MORE understanding than ANY other video series - you gave me details that others missed that makes far more sense than how the shape is derived. There are countless videos dedicated as to HOW to draft a sleeve, but the relationship it has with the curves on the bodice was exactly what i was looking at. And the yardstick of the #inches of arm sleeve disatnce and upper arm measurement - NEVER come across that before! WOW

My Goodness, your videos are so superior to all the others!! The way you took the time to explain just the points on that sleeve pattern..I can now look at the pattern piece and know what is the front portion and that a line represents the bicep..That helps me so much cause I have been struggling for years, so I can concentrate on making the actual adjustments now. Thank you for breaking down the measurements in the sleeve cap and bicep line. I'm teaching myself and am always happy to find videos with detailed theory too. I'm currently altering a men's button up shirt to fit my mother in law and now see that I need to narrow the cap. I had about 4 extra inches of ease :P

Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. Working on my sloper, getting the sleeve correct has been a challenge. Now I have a better guide as to what I should be doing, and checking. Your presentations are clear and I like the way you explain details. Also I appreciate you showing different sizes. Having a full bust often makes things tricky, as my pattern does not look like commercial ones. I have just started working with princess seams, think they will work well for large bust. Now... back to see if I can improve my sleeve fit. Do you have a method where people can support your work financially? Like Patreon or Liberapay

I'm a beginner and I have drafted a basic sleeve pattern before now but I'm just watching more expertise video to check that my pattern is okay and I can raise my hands up without my dress going up.
One quick question. My pattern has about 1 inch and half ease on both sides.
Is that okay?
After watching all of your sleeve/armhole videos, I put my bodice pattern down with the bicep lines aligned on front and back and the side seams overlapping and discovered that I have no more than 4" of armhole width. I'm not a huge person, but I'm not tiny either, and so little width in the armhole just won't work. It appears that the across-body measurements that I have are too long, making the bodice body too wide and the armhole width too narrow. Does that sound reasonable? I can reduce the across-body measurements, but can you give me some idea of how much the first reduction should be? I'd like to get close the first time so as not to have to make three or four (more) muslins to resolve this issue. It's so nice to have found you and the level of detail that you include in your presentations!
I'm a bit confused that ease between the notches is distributed equally, but when drafting the armhole more room is given to the back.

This is FANTASTIC! Enlightening! Question: On your sleeve pattern, I noticed that your top notch did NOT align with the center line of the sleeve. Does this mean that the CENTER LINE of the sleeve is NOT always exactly aligned to the SHOULDER SEAM ??? ❤
yes, in most cases the center sleeve is not the position for the notch.The front armhole should be shorter than the back so that the sleeve pitches forward at the same angle of your arm.

Very interested in knowing the slight sleeve drag lines pointing up to the cap signify a little extra ease to allow arm movement rather than a too-short cap. I had these drag lines as well as a convex shape to the bicep balance line. I added more length to the cap height
which eliminated the drag lines AND allowed the bicep line to be parallel to the floor. Should I reverse all that and be OK with a slightly convex curve to the bicep line?
Is there a recommended distance from the cut edge to put the back and front sleeve notches please Alexandra?

What if you have a pattern - independent designer - where the sleeve cap has 3.8cm of ease? I'm trying to figure out how to take out 2.3cm of ease out of an existing sleeve cap without changing anything else with regards to the design of the sleeve? I'm really struggling with this. I tried slashing the sleeve cap horizontally above the notches and moving the top piece down a little, but it's not nearly enough. Should I just keep doing that and re-drawing the curve until it fits? It's so frustrating because I really want to make it work. I would start from scratch, but I don't know how much ease they have in the bicep area - it's a full sleeve that flares out to the hem. Do you have any suggestions?
This amount of ease can work if the armhole size and fabric choice will allow it. If you cannot ease this amount in you can reduce cap width in addition to cap height.lowering the base of the armhole will also a aid this.
