Sophia said later that she didn't think she would win since it was a foreign film with subtitles, so she did not show up. She was only 25 years old when Two Women was made. She was amazing and really felt the part. Carlo Ponti must have been so proud.

Sophia definitely deserved this. The iconography of the beautiful Audrey in Breakfast at Tiffany's and of Natalie Wood in Splendor in the Grass...and of course Geraldine Paige (one of the best actresses of the last 50+ years) overshadow a devestating performance from Sophia Loren in a truly groundbreaking film. One that showed the horrors of war...and for a Foreign Language Film as well, it was amazing

One of the most competitive year for Best Actress. All were wonderful, but Loren's performance was on another level. As were her performances in Marriage Italian Style and A Special Day. These films are not shown often. But each is a masterpiece.

Your comment is disrespectful. Natalie Wood was an extraordinary actress that connected with audiences for 25 years and for future generations. No less an authority than Elia Kazan, the actors director and director of Splendor in the Grass, said that Natalie was one of the best actresses he had ever seen and did a rare television interview because Natalie was the subject of the interview. That's a testament to Natalie's acting ability.

I love Natalie Wood, but her performance in "Splendor In The Grass" did not have the depth of that of Sophia's in "Two Women". Sophia's was a gut wrenching raw performance of fire and power second to none. Sophia did not attend because she thought they would never give it to an Italian language performance. It was a first and ground breaking award 50 years ago and most deserved one at that.

Did you know Greer Garson (the lady who accepted the award for Sophia) is the reason the Oscars are not even longer than they already are? The year she won the best actress award, she gave a speech that lasted almost 20 minutes. The next year is when the winners were given time limits.

Greer Garson who won the Best-Actress Award for the 1942 War film, playing a gutsy English Home-maker, gave a 5 1/2 min speech while on the podium to accept her statuette in the 1943 Academy Awards."

I've heard stories in which she gave a seventy-five minute speech! But, it was only five-and-a-half. She never lived it down: decades later, she was interviewed for a book being written about Oscar history, and at the end, she implored the author to set the record straight about her speech. "The story was funny in the beginning, but it has gotten so out of hand. Would you tell them the truth?" (Not verbatim).

Despite her great stardom, Sophia always appears down to earth and genuine. Her performance here was shattering and unexpected because she was more of a romantic comedy actress. Btw, Burt Lancaster has always been one of my very favorite actors, but he really screwed up this presentation.

Amazing performance of Sofía, in the role of Cesira. Ir was intended to be performed by Ana Magnani and Sophia to play the rol of Rosseta.
When Magnani declained her rol, Sofía claimed it for herself in spite of being so young.
She play a more of 40 years old mother, so convincent as the author requested in his novel (Alberto Moravia).

Gary Henzler, yes, actors are laborers who reflect what is happening in our society. Tee Tarquin is not blaming anyone other than the actor (s) himself, herself (themselves) for grandstanding and gaslighting. Today's actors have taken advantage of these awards programs to present their own political views as their acceptance speeches or "off the cuff" remarks. Art for the sake of art was always an underlying motive and theme when the Hollywood studios were all powerful. Of course, no one is forcing Tee Tarquin to watch, but if he were already watching and an actor wins an award and steps up to his/her soapbox, Tee Tarquin and many others are going to formulate their opinions on such.

In 1974 I think it was, Sophia Loren came to see my show and wanted to know if my hair was real. She lived 1/2 block from my apartment in Paris. I lived on 16 Ave. Montaigne, she lived on Ave GeorgeV between Montaign and the champs Elysee. What a beauty she still is...

As much as i like Sophia, this award should have gone to Natalie Wood who was spectacular in "Splendor in the Grass" the big omission here however was Marilyn Monroe in "The Misfists" probably the only movie that she really deserved an Oscar for!!

How sad is that the first Italian Oscar Winner (Actor/Actress) Anna Magnani was not there to receive the prize personally, she thought she would not win, then the second Italian winner, Sophia, was not there either. (And what a coincidence that initally Anna was cast for the mother role and Sophia was cast as the daughter in the "two women". Then it was decided that Sophia plays the mother, and she did indeed.)
Anyway, the third Italian Oscar winner, Roberto, was present to get his prize and what a ceremony. And guess, who gives the prize, Sophia.

@astralagosto let's all calm down now! Obviously, we will all have our opinions as to who deserved this Oscar. Personally, I haven't seen Two Women so I am not able to have an opinion on who deserved it more. However, it is unfair to say that Natalie was not a good actress. I HAVE seen Splendour in the Grass, as well as Love with the Proper Stranger, and she was very good at what she did. It is really fair to say she wasn't a very good actress? Let her rest in peace, and now enjoy Sophia Loren.
