    Blimey Henry, you’re certainly putting in the miles on this advent series. You didn’t get the best out of waterfall country, lots more locations nearby to photograph. I live in Monmouth and these falls are within easy reach for me. Next time you’re down in the area give me a shout I’d be happy to show you around. The advent series is a monumental effort and really appreciate all the effort you have taken in doing it.

    A couple days ago I set out into the Colorado mountains west of home (near Denver, Colorado USA) to get what promised to be a spectacular sunset photo with epic lenticular clouds and snow glowing from reflected light. Sigh. Didn't happen, low clouds completely blocked the low sun. Came home grousing about the waste of time and gas but my daughter said something to the effect of "You can't catch any fish if you don't go fishing."
    Often we go out and get some nice shots, but not every time.
    Also, rule of thirds is a great starting point for many photos. I like it.

    We all get days like that Henry. when it happens to me, I have learnt to put my camera away and just enjoy what is around me, sit and chill, or just jog on. Incidentally, at around 14.19 on the video, it looks as is there might have been an intimate shot behind you with all the moss and lichen on the those boulders. Mind you, it might have been a slippery climb to reach. Have a good day!!

    Yep. It's certainly not an unbreakable law but it often gives a pleasing balance or flow to an image.
    I like Mads Peter Iverson's phrasing re composition: "tools, not rules."
    It's a little more succinct than 'guideline' and it not only has the same amount of syllables but it even rhymes. :D

    Hi Henry perhaps the "power of third" or "principle of third" would be more suitable. I also like using the golden rectangle as it feels less formal. Cheers and bless you for all the effort put in this wonderful advent series. An absolute gem for all of us.

    nice to see you in god's own piece of south Wales! I spent years in waterfall country planning to turn professional and lead workshops there. but ill health put paid to that unfortunately, but at least i got loads of images to remember that time in my life. if you ever head back there give me a shout and i can let you know about the best off the beaten track spots 🙂
    looked like you were heading to sgwd einon gam - you need to cross the river 3 times to get there so best after a dry spell. it also freezes over and that is a sight!

    I like the rule of thirds as a starting point. Once I’ve got a composition, I can tweak it and go away from thirds if I think I need to.

    The "rule of thirds", to me, is the most natural and useful compositional "rule." It is also the easiest to visualize. I use it all the time in my landscape photography. I really need to get back out shooting.

    I never think about compositional 'rules'. I look at what is before me and react to it. I don't recommend anyone restrict their creativity by thinking there are rules, or even guides. But it's fine to look at great photos you admire and consider why you responded to it.

      I think as an experienced photographer this approach would be great, as you know what you are looking for. But as a beginner it can help improve composition and overall photo quality. Which in turn leads to more experience and then the approach that you now use.

      Kind of do the same thing. But ….. I think everyone should learn the basics of compositional rules . And then learn how to break them in an artistic way to build up your own style in the end the more you do something the more it becomes second nature and don’t even think about it 99% of the time.

    I was there in October and the Autumn colour was amazing. I was on the edge of my seat when you were on those rocks! One of the guys with us fell and broke his leg on the path, never mind the wet rocks. I may go back in the spring and see what it looks like then. Thanks for sharing.

    The waterfalls are close enough to me to have been several times and each time I share your frustration and often come away disappointed. Your first shot was an impressive solution . In fact more gernerally I would say that anticipating waterfalls has rarely for me been matched by the photographs I have eventually come away with.
    I noticed for the litttle fall in the foreground you avoided stitching a couple of shots together. Similarly I wonder how you yourself feel about "editting out" the odd branch or such that can spoil these types of shots?

    I find wearing ice cleats or felt bottom rubbers like fly fishermen use. Works wonders when you’re out on slippery rocks. I opt for the cleats most times because they just slip over your shoes. Saves packing the rubbers around.

    Hi Henry, perhaps not your most productive day out, but thanks for sharing anyway. We all need to understand that to get a good image, you need subject, composition, light and inspiration, and if any one of those is absent, then it can get a bit tricky .. and that's just how it is. The other way to look at this might be that if every day were 10/10 then we'd tend not to appreciate the good conditions anything like as much as we ought, so the occasional "less than perfect experieince" merely serves to make us truly appreciate when it all comes together. Keep up the good work Henry !

    Any day out with the camera is still a good day Henry, regardless of the outcome in relation to images. Likewise I dont like the term 'rule' as it implies adherence, however it is still good to know the principle as you then know how to break away from convention to broaden your creativity

    The only rule I consider really is my 24MP. I react to the scene in front of me and just consider where to place my subject. I make sure I leave a bit of space to crop if need be.. rules are good to be aware of and then just ignore them..

    Thanks Henry. I visited the Brecon Beacons this year and I was hoping you could show me some composition techniques. I got home and simply had big square waterfalls filling the screen. My only good photo was a very green fairy tail like moss covered woodland shot. I do find waterfalls very difficult to photograph and I think some on the reason is limited places to stand and change composition.

    I have a question regarding your composition with the waterfall at the 5:55 mark. and would like to hear your thoughts. having the waterfall which is flowing right to left, on the left third is FOR ME visually distracting as your wonderful use of the plants ans river bank to lead my eyes up to the waterfall, the waterfall becomes a big white arrow taking my eye out of the picture. In the video the lighter color plants almost cut the image into two halves next to the darker tones of creek and waterfall. As I really enjoy learning from you and taking a backseat on your journies, I wondered what your thoughts on this would be. Thank you and I appriciate hoe you are working your butt off for these videos, and I continue to look forward to them. thanks

    So with the two waterfall scenes, 2/3rds of the frame was land leading up to the Falls. What aperture did you use? Do you want a large DOF so that the land leading to the Falls is in focus? Or do you want a shallow DOF so that the land begins out of focus then gradually comes into focus as you approach the Falls?

  • @billkipper3264
    @billkipper3264 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I do use the rule of thirds but most of the time I find that it places my subject too far to the side of my composition leaving a bunch of empty space in the rest of the frame. What I generally do is place my subject just inside of the left or right line. I feel that by doing that my photos seem more balanced. As far as attitude goes I also find that if I go out to shoot a particular subject I almost always get disappointed. So when I go out I try to not have any expectations. That way if a great comp appears I can take advantage of it and take home a nice image. If not, then at least I had a good day out and I go home a happy camper anyway.

    Hi Henry, I’m starting to get used to the idea of having a new video to watch every morning, so I might be suffering withdrawal after advent. I love your enthusiasm but I have to admit that waterfalls just don’t do it for me generally. I know that I’m probably in the minority there. I do sometimes like zoomed-in,more abstract waterfall shots. In your first image of this video, the idea of including the cliff face and all the vegetation is really nice but the actual waterfall flowing out of the shot on the left would not work for me at all. I,d need it to flow into the centre of the image. It’s not a criticism of your work, if it works for you, brilliant, but it would drive me nuts. I do believe the rule of thirds produces pleasing images but I never compose an image with that in mind particularly. It often works out that my main subject ends up on one of the thirds of an image but it’s rarely done consciously.

  • @timd4524
    @timd4524 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I use it quite a bit for wildlife. It just gives a better picture of the subject appears to be looking at something off the other end of the picture. Sometimes it's just not possible though. These animals never took a modeling class in their life lol. Like most people I consider it just one more tool in the bag. It does work nicely on landscape photos though. Portraits and action shots also. If every shot was centered, they would get boring after a bit.
