A new technique for me to learn... I'm a knitter and remain facinated by the idea of creating cloth with 2 sticks and a peice of string... A freind asked me if I'd heard of Sprang, as a historical method, and thanks to the wonders of the internet I now have a good base to start teaching myself a new, historically period style of material crafting for SCA projects. Thank you VERY much for a wonderful demonstraion.
when i learnt to do this at Uni, we did not use a safety string instead we used a stick to stop the sprang from springing apart and we could also use it as a beating baton to tighten the sprang up. to finish we got a crochet hook and did a simple chain stitch and tied the last two strings together with a finer piece of cotton. And to take it off the frame we tied a piece of string to the top of the first loop and passed it through each loop and tied it off at the last loop top and bottom.
Thank you so much! I 've tried it so often using pictures, but I could never figure out how it really worked.. thank you for doing that video! Greets from Germany. :)
Thankyou so very much for these videos. I saw an example of sprang at Butser Ancient Farm in the UK and heard about the Danish hair net so it's great to see a picture of it. Excellent tuition in the "lost" art. Thankyou for the inspiration.
SPRANG / Z Twist: Carr.Impares: Comeca1° de traz p. frente e da 1° da frente p. traz, termina1. Carr.
Obrigada, professora!
Thanks so much for these tutorials! Question: What are the best types of yarn to use for this? I tried with fisherman's wool, and while the top part turned out fine, the bottom end, as I pushed down the twists, turned into a tangled, felted mess.
Groeten Blue

Your appreciation for this technique truly comes through to the spectator, and you are a marvelous teacher. Good camera man as well.
I enjoyed sprang lesson 1, and this is the icing on the cake. Can't wait to get started! Many thanks, once again.

Thank-you so very much! It's much clearer watching than reading the directions in a book. Vielen dank!

Wouldn't it make sense to go prepared with a good zoom lens before doing this video ?
Reminds me a lot of doing Bobbin Lace.
