How to build a 180 square foot Vector Equilibrium geodesic dome gazebo for under $200.
Materials Needed
- Fifteen 2x4x8 foot wooden struts. $60
- Heavy duty zip ties to act as connectors. $40
- Cover the squares and triangles with 6 foot x 20 foot Almond Matrix Grid Sun Shade Fabric. Secure to the struts with ten 1 inch x 2 inch x 8 foot furring strip board and wood screws. $100
Building the Strut Assembly Drill two 1/2 inch holes in the 2x4x8 foot struts. Drill the holes at the ends of the struts on the 4 inch side (eye ball the spot). Lay out 6 base struts in a hexagonal shape.
Connect the base strut end holes and secure tightly with zip ties.
Add 2 struts forming a triangle on top of the hexagon base using zip ties. Skip a base strut and add 2 more triangle struts forming a triangle on top of the hexagon base using zip ties.
Connect the two triangles with a roof strut using zip ties to form a 8 foot by 8 foot square.
Repeat to complete the Vector Equilibrium geodesic dome.
Measure the 16 foot distance between the hexagon vertexes and ANCHOR each strut of the hexagon base. The dome is SO LIGHT IT WILL BLOW AWAY like mine did. Then ensure all strut connections are tightly secured with zip ties.
Cover the squares and triangles with 6 ft. x 20 ft. Almond Matrix Grid Sun Shade Fabric and secure on the struts with 1 inch x 2 inch x 8 foot Furring Strip Board and wood screws.
Your 180 square foot geodesic Vector Equilibrium gazebo is now complete! Add a plywood triangle hexagon floor.
For the fun of it add a 7 foot tetrahedron sloped roof covered with three 4x8 foot sheets of corrugated plastic for a second floor loft.
Add a pop out entry way using square and triangle struts and a two 4x8 foot exterior plywood. Cover with peel and stick rolled roof. Just for the fun of it add a sliding glass door ($600).
Add three more pop outs to connect domes for a kitchen, bathroom, living room and more bedrooms.
Install Go Zero solar panels and battery pack for lights, USB ports and refrigerator.
