I visited Saipan twice in 1975-76, and spent about six days there. My first time there I spent whole afternoon snorkeling around this Sherman tank. I got a bad sunburn but I had a blast ! Amazing how much the island has built up in 40 years.
There's another sherman tank right in the middle of the channel in Chalan Kanoa. Not too many people know about it. We (the neighborhood kids) used to walk out to it during low tide until the water gets too deep for us, swim, and then stand on the turret (the gun?). We'd all swim back to shore before the tide comes back in. Good times.
I visited Saipan in 1968 and probably crawled across a couple of the same wrecked tanks. No scuba gear, just a rowboat. Saipan is a lot more built up now, I was a bit startled to see jet skis and a beachfront hotel in the video. In 1968 it still looked very much the aftermath of a war zone.
The handful of tanks that are accessible off Saipan belonged to a US Army tank battalion that was attached to the Marines. At least one was knocked out by a direct hit from a 47mm AT gun. You can see the penetration point on the front of the hull.
And he does it again. Great vid, I was also a bit concerned about preserving the sight but I saw your reply to ZeroAmplified. Thanks for showing us all this cool stuff. Cant wait for the next one.
Awesome man glad you're still at it! I just started freediving in puget sound, and with no wetsuit at 55 degrees farhenhite it gets a little chilly, but I'm learning haha.
Hey brother. I hope you made a trip to Managaha. Plenty of great coral and downed aircraft to dive for. I just moved to saipan in Jan best place on earth, for me anyways. Peace.
i live in austria and once there was a diver who explored a sunken tank in a lake. the diver was about 50 meters deep when he got trapped inside the tank (he closed the "door). even thinking about this accident make me feel so bad
i don´t really know if there is an article online i heard the story from my dad who is a former diving instructor but they later found him with no compressed air left, so after perhaps one hour he was dead .. it´s a real nightmare for me to be trapped underwater
***** How do you transport your fins while on airplanes? I have never transported my free diving fins on planes or anything like that and they are very difficult to pack with luggage. I am going to Florida and want to bring them but would they get damaged if I was to put them in checked baggage
What is the piece of music u use at the very end i've heard it before but the name eludes me . Like the footage tho the music u've selected ain't ma cup o tea but the footage is exceptional ...
Saipan is a 50-minute flight from Guam in the Mariana Islands. There are direct, nonstop flights to Saipan from Korea, Japan, and (sometimes) China as well. It's about a four-hour flight to Saipan from some Asian cities.
to ROBwithaB....Shermans at times could be fitted with a rubber apron that allowed them to be amphibious. I saw a tank raised from Slapton Sands south Devon Uk in the 80s that had had this devise fail and sank during training for DDay
There is another tank near that one, same condition. They are better preserved than all the Japanese tanks because those have been shot up for target practice after the general fighting.

I saw that! hahah You broke the up cap, for the small passage above. At the beginning of the video it was half closed, then there is nothing...nore open nore closed
Good video, but please be respectful to these sights we all love to dive at. We want them to stay the way they are for as long as possible, right?! You can touch just don't stand, kneel, or do anything that can damage the awesome dive sights. Not trying to be mean just want to be able to travel the world and explore some of these sights one day. Thanks :)
***** Oh okay i didn't know that people do it all the time sorry about that. Aw that sucks that people would do that to those planes. I don't get what they achieve from doing that. Well thank you for having respect for the ocean you don't see that a lot nowadays. Anyways thank you for making these videos I've been watching them since last year and i love them! Keep it up man :D

hehehe... i should be studying for my finals, but i have brakes from time to time and i was just watching your black out story vid and after it i was like: "sherman tanks? whats that i didnt saw that one." and after that i've read in description "Published on 2 Jun" ...damn its TODAY!!! lucky :D btw: does anybody know some good freediving spots in Spain and basically Mediterranean sea? I'm planning trip from Czech (where im from, duh :D ) to Spain and after that all the islands of Mediterranean sea so i was hoping for some info, thx :)

Thanks guys!! Dean: saw them all ;) Wish i had so much experience under water as you do. And Canary are politically under Spain, but are more like part of Africa, which is really far for me, coz im going to hitchhike :) but thanks anyway. I hope i'll get there sometime :) Also what do you do for living and where are you from, that you can spend so much time diving in asia and SA?? MrAtariable: thanks mate, looks really rad. Also it is kinda on my way :) My first goal is Cadiz where i want to spend some time with my buddy surfing. And after that i'll head east. Hopefully catch some boat that would sail that way. Because my second destination is Cyprus and i want to visit most of the island in between those two locations :) wish me luck :D
if i had the chance i whould pull the tank out and sell it... but its a piece of history and i dont live there or have any idea how to get the tank ouy
+Jack The Killer I think you could work here in my home town, for the South African goverment. Right now it is a trend to scrap historical landmarks/statues for cash!
Why would you do something so stupid.? It's from a historic battle and it remains there as a relic to show what went down there in the pass. Its amazing you clearly don't care about history but only care about the Wealth
t000000000MUCH no no no. i care about history i know alot of prototype things developed in wars. and tbh i dont think its good to leave something rusting in the middle of the sea.
My daughters mom is from there. Until sge was 10 then sent to florida with other family members . its a superstitious island were the trees talk to you. Would love to go there some day but im in ny and thats on the other side of the planet like 10,000 miles 😂. At least bring my daughter there some how some way.
stendell09 you should remember to keep a pony bottle of air for emergency use because getting caught underwater happens in unlikely places but especially diving lakes due to fishing line floating around. Otherwise free diving is great because scuba bubbles scare fish and you have the noise also.
I visited Saipan twice in 1975-76, and spent about six days there. My first time there I spent whole afternoon snorkeling around this Sherman tank. I got a bad sunburn but I had a blast ! Amazing how much the island has built up in 40 years.

Great footage man! In Belgium we also got a Sherman tank in Bastogne but i never saw one from the inside. Love these ww2 themed videos!
No problem mate, we all appreciate the time you take to answer all our comments.
I would never imagine being there on that tank just few weeks ago. Thanks to your vids!
I was born and raised in Saipan and you posted this on my birthday!

did he die?
yes
How long was he trapped for?! That's scary and is there anything on the internet about it? I am very interested now.
i don´t really know if there is an article online i heard the story from my dad who is a former diving instructor but they later found him with no compressed air left, so after perhaps one hour he was dead .. it´s a real nightmare for me to be trapped underwater
i found just one article that claimed that the tank was recovered some years ago
I really want to go there!

I wonder if there are any laws protecting these tanks from being raised.
ah, so there is no way of acquiring them for restoration or anything, i guess they are part of a battlefield...
Great video! Beautiful colors!
According to your last post about the HERO3+ Black Edition, I suppose you shot this video with the Hero 2?
Thanks for a new video! I just want to ask you about fins. Is this pure carbon or not? What is the brand?
This film is very impressive! May I know your diving suit?
Thanks for you reply!!! I can not believe you really reply for me! Thank you. I will try the brand which you recommend。
I'm from Saipan and this makes me miss home! hope you got a chance to check out our grotto!

Lol. there are 3 tanks.
Who gave the keys to those drivers
Any idea how the tanks actually landed n the water in the first place?
Beach landings don't usually involve tanks.

Cool.
I suppose the skeletons of the drowned soldiers have been chowed by the fish already.
***** I think the tankers would have likely got out.
must be an amphibious tank that land in beaches in landing crafts
