Although it's unlikely I will be around, anyone else think the 2112 Olympics should be held in Toronto?

As a Torontonian, let me just give that a big fat NO!
Or what do I care, I'll be dead by then anyway.

Thank you for taking our suggestion, Ruben! 2112 was a truly transformative time for Rush in their early years. Of course, as you listen to more of their 4 decades of music, you'll discover most of the time they were transforming themselves... all the while maintaining THEIR sound, and their integrity. It's a real pleasure watching someone experiencing this for the first time. Thank you again.

Im the same as yourself Ruben, kind of late to the Rush party, A couple of years ago i was repairing a friends motorcycle in his garage and he played this cd, being a guitar player i just stopped in my tracks and said what in the hell is that???
He said 'Rush' and i've been hooked ever since. The thing that pulled me in on the first hearing that day was the strange time signatures and riff timings, i would just sit for hours till i could play them!
Geddy's voice was amazing when he was younger, he could really belt out a vocal! He still has that distinctive range but when younger on the high notes he has that power to put a bit of grittiness and power to the top notes, Brilliant!

I had a hard time liking Rush because of the vocals until I listened to hemispheres. Then I went back to the beginning and started over. Been with them for 35 years now and love it. The way they can play all over the place and then come together for the climax is a trade mark for them that still gives me goose bumps.

Oh my God what a roller coaster ride. That’s what this song makes me think of. Transition’s are so amazing. It lull’s you to sleep as it relaxes you. Then with a massive building intensity it just builds up to a super sweat fest. Now you can see why they called themselves RUSH. Total rush. It’s genius art with a story to tell with all these instrumentals. Love your ending reactions. In a crazy world we live in now with this pandemic’s grasp and crazy politics, music is a great way to escape the madness. I loved all these amazing transitional songs in one. Rock on. Many best wishes from Canada. Home of one of the best bands ever....

Here's something weird for ya... Last lyrics are "Attention all planets of the Solar Federation". They say those 7 words 3 times.
Then it ends with "We have assumed control". Those 4 words are said 3 times.

I am so glad that you’re discovering just how fantastic Rush is. And 2112, to me, is Rush’s Opus. The ultimate journey.
Suggestions for you, Ruben, on your evolution with the Trio - go forward five years and three albums to Permanent Waves - Spirit of Radio and, my personal favorite from that album, Natural Science. Permanent Waves laid the groundwork for Moving Pictures, which was Rush’s high water mark with many.
Love the reactions, and keep more Rush coming!!

Two of the members changed their names as it was the case back in those days in North America to seem more Anglo. Alexandar Zivojinovich (Serbian) is Alex Lifeson's real name. Gary Lee Weinrib (Jewish) is Geddy Lee's real name. Neil Peart never changed his name but did go to England to try out for some bands. He played locally in my town with my Brother-in-Law (Bob L)and his brother (Gary L) with JR Flood and Hush before going to Rush in Toronto. If only my sister married the drummer and not the base player.

Quick opinion: I caught the quick cartoon accompaniment to the song and how this rock overture and I mean that specifically since it's broken into movements, hasn't been made into a musical drama of sorts escapes me. It would be epic.
For Ruben : I think you noted that you could probably listen to this many times and kept hearing something different. Did anyone pick up the 1812 Overature overlapping the 2112 overture near the end before the explosions precluding Temple? Interesting the dates are similar is no accident.

Imagine seeing this performed live at 15 in 1979 and they play it note for note. One of the ALL TIME GREAT BANDS for sure. Most of my generation could care less about this band at this time. They thought it as being disjointed. They had no idea of the complexity of the time signatures and their changes mid song. But, for those of us that did what a sonic treat to our ears. Now couple this sound with Neil Peart's (One of the best drummer in the world) story telling and you have an epic adventure that only the best novels can take you on. Another great example would be off the album "A Farewell to Kings"'s Cygnus X-1.

Or for something more recent, Far Cry. Or for something older and weirder (but fun), By-Tor and the Snow Dog. At any rate, welcome aboard once again. Never too late.

Hello from Canada! Commenting quite a while after your upload of this vid., just to say that if you didn't know this, was Rush's response to their record company requesting "...shorter, more radio-friendly songs" (!) It's the OTHER reason so many musicians respect and admire them so reverently. They said: "We'll go down as ourselves if we jhave to, but we ain't changing nothing!"

Glad you’re getting to know Rush! Please listen to Spirit of Radio next. It’s a song they usually opened their concerts with. Awesome guitar licks and powerful intro. You’ll love it!

I'm so happy to see how this wonderful band has effected you. They had a similar effect on me when I first heard them back in 1977. Now, that's side one. As awesome as it was, there is still another excellent side to hear. Enjoy.

Watching you listening to this album reminds me of listening to it over and over when I was a teenager! It's crazy to see someone profile this great album. Rush's earlier albums are all concept albums, They all have the whole story for the album.

2112 is a Iconic record in Rush 70s catalog Released in 76 gave the band there Freedom from the record company to do what they wanted moving farward. Rush gave us a record with a attitude of the time. the previous records Rush, Fly By Night and Caress of Steel Didn't offer. Rush drummer John Rutsey had to leave the band because of his Diabetes he couldn't go on the Road across America because of his illness. Niel Peart Joined the band in 74 and wrote lyrics to 99% of Rushes material which gave Geddy and Alex More time to work on there sound. Rush wasnt together long and Fly By Night and Caress of Steel while they are good records also shows how they was raw in there sound and still trying to figure out what they want to do with there sound. 2112 was a break through album and gave them a freedom to express themselves musically. also paved away a great Career in Music that lasted 40 plus years of music. While A Farewell to Kings and Hemispheres ended the 70's decade with good classics. But 2112 as stood over them as a bench mark for Rush's sound and what has become the best Rush Album in Rush's Career as a band through popular vote. but as you keep digging into Rush the more songs you hear you'll realize as good as 2112 is..Its just a reflection of a Bands Brilliants and talent they have and the love they play through the music that made them best 3 piece to ever play Music. and the best thing about it is they did it there way..my advise to you is not to limit yourself to a paticular song you got listen to every record to appreciate Rush.

Incredible songs, both Fountain and Necromancer. Tbh, the whole Caress Of Steel album is generally overlooked, but to me is one of the their best records. It definitely sets the way for them in the search for their sound at the beggining of their career.

Thanks for the amazing review. Check out the songs: 'the pass' (it's about suicide prevention) and also the song 'nobodys hero'. Those two are amazing works that came out around midway through their career. They are a bit on the softer side but stand out for the lyrics. The pass is one of geddys favorite tunes.
