I'm not normally one for theory, modes etc but that really helped. I've delved into the world of the Mixolydian before simple because of wanting to understand how & why Tom Verlaine sounded like he did & this has made it easier. The bit where you jammed over the G drone was wonderful & immediately I got the Marquee Moon vibe & the drone gave it that Eastern flavour. All of the examples listed were favourite songs of mine a well & I think the Mixolydian will be getting more use from now on. Some of it I've been doing naturally but I've been unsure in the past of what to use it with. This has helped a lot-Thanks.
Learning the solo from Television’s See No Evil taught me some fundamentals of mixolydian scales, and it’s still my go-to pattern when I want that feel.
I was about to write the exact same coment. Actually not only Baião song, but almost every single Luiz Gonzaga's song are based on the mixolydian mode. Every Brazilian guitar player think of Luiz Gonzaga when he listen for the first time the sound of mixolydian mode
Remember the word "mode" really means "MOOD" and that alone makes them easier to pick out. With mixolydian you were emphasizing the Major 3rd and the Flat 7. Rock uses it like crazy. Angus Young uses those intervals a ton in his playing and it gives it that really sleazy rock sound.
Jerry Garcia plays a lot with Mixo. You came close to Fire on the Mountain when you were noodling btwn G and F. Would LOVE LOVE LOVE to hear you explore some Grateful Dead tunes. 🎉
Yes, more Modes please Adrian! Here are the chords in each mode which outline the modal flavour. The "home chord", plus two other chords which contain the "flavour" note of the Mode (I've discarded all the Diminished chords with the flavour note as they are not often used): DORIAN CHORDS: i ii IV PHRYGIAN CHORDS: i bII bvii LYDIAN CHORDS: I II vii MIXOLYDIAN CHORDS: I v bVII
Such a great breakdown. I definitely am on the opposite end of the spectrum in that I very much prefer to think about my home scale and alter it. I honestly have found the biggest help to just be the study of triads and intervals and relating them to the CAGED shapes they sit in. It can make one shape feel like an ocean, which is a freeing feeling.
I appreciate the lesson and although I’ve been using the mixolidian scale for a while I have now learned some helpful nuances as to how to look at it. Much appreciated 👍😃
Learning Modes confused me because i was taught to find what key was the one that was setting the rules for each mode which makes you count backwards for every mode. (in this case the key of C) I can now see it's WAY better to just learn every mode's defined scale!
You're not alone. The first 15 of my 45 years learning music I always thought of modes as playing the C major scale and starting on different degrees of the scale. This is absolutely not a good way to think of it. I now just think about how each mode differs from the major or natural minor scale. i.e. - Dorian is a natural minor with a raised/major sixth, Phrygian is a minor scale with a flat/minor second, Lydian is a major scale with a raised/augmented fourth (enharmonic equivalent of diminished fifth), Mixolydian is a major scale with a flat/minor seventh, Locrian is a minor scale with a flat/minor second AND a flat/diminished fifth.
I came across your channel around 2018/19 while looking to help my eldest grandson with his understanding of theory I was a genius until he discovered you for himself, took the wind out of my sails a little Excellent lesson, though, as usual .
Frank Zappa's guitar solo on the song "Inca Roads" is in D mixolydian, over a vamp of C and D chords toggling back and forth. In terms of the parent key, it's like using the notes of the G major scale while the vamp plays the IV and V chords.
I always struggled with music theory at school and to this day (quite a few decades later), I can only embarrassingly 'read' music one note at a time. I suppose it is kind of a music dyslexia. In order to get my head around stuff, I figured out my own way of understanding it and as far as modes go, it is much easier for me to regard them as different ways of playing the same scale; e.g. G Mixolydian is just Am with the emphasis/resolution on the G rather than the A. It didn't help, by the way, that when I was just getting my fingers to remember my first three chords (E, A and D) somebody tried to explain Mixolydian to me. I'm sure that for those with a good technical understanding will see it differently - it's probably like this pictures in which people either see a young girl or al old woman or a duck or a rabbit - but over time, I have found a way of seeing music which I have encapsulated into an A4 crib diagram which would probably confuse the hell out of most people and maybe one day something will click and I will see the rabbit, so to speak.
The mixo is the 5th degree. I just count from G five notes backwards.. gfedC - C major it is.. Works for all modes. Just learn modal degree numbers. As the video states start on the root i.e. on G to get the mixo flavour.
I'm pretty sure you're not a fan of American jam bands, but Jerry Garcia of the Dead and Duane Allman and Dicky Betts of the Allman Brothers used the mixolydian mode extensively.
I'm not hugely knowledgeable about either, but I love a bit of Dead and Allman's from time to time. In fact American Beauty is a bit of a favourite of mine. Definitely lots of mixo action in their songs!
Whenever I think of the mixolydian I am reminded of the Ballad of John and Yoko where there at the very end it’s played just straight from that B note. But unlike your examples where you demonstrate over the root note of the mixo, they’re playing it as the relative or 5th of the tonic and yet it sounds very mixo to me.
You can create a very short loop if you have a looper..one note or one chord for a brief moment. I sometimes do it w a cheapo synth as that has less attack as a loop
Not hating on anyone, but why some people find it more comfortable to keep their vibrato arms loose like that? I’ve been always intrigued by all the offset players with those loosely wiggling sticks, it just looks so uncomfortable to me
Finally some Grateful Dead on this channel!
Exactly!
Oh yes I heard that too. Love it!
Yes, I would say Jerry Garcia is actually the all-time champion of the mixolydian mode on the guitar
Right?! Came here to say the same thing. Best instructor on the web!!

well said!

Yes, more modes, please! Really useful and easy to follow explanation, thanks!
Ahhhh...a truly beautiful, tasteful lead played on one of the greatest sounding guitars ever...the magical Jazzmaster..well done !
Thanks again for your no-nonsense and kindly take on modes. I’m just getting into modes and appreciate your approach, as with all of your stuff.
Being Brazilian, my go to song when I think mixolydian is "Baião" by Luiz Gonzaga. I've even heard people refer to mixolydian as the "baião scale".
I was about to write the exact same coment. Actually not only Baião song, but almost every single Luiz Gonzaga's song are based on the mixolydian mode. Every Brazilian guitar player think of Luiz Gonzaga when he listen for the first time the sound of mixolydian mode
Some real Nels Cline vibe going on in that . Nice work!

Loving all your videos. Great instruction. I have lots to learn

Yes, great information, thank-you. Will definitely try and do some more modes videos like this one.
The man does it again, thanks a lot
Great video as always - I think there comes a point with “scary” topics like modes where you realise how simple they are and think “is that it?”.
Great video! thanks Adrian. Keep these theory videos coming I need all the help I can get 🙌

Beautiful!! Lovely wilco t shirt too.....Nels would approve

The Cult's She Sells Sanctuary is entirely in D Mixo. And ACDC wouldn't exist without the Mixolydian mode
Yes absolutely loving this - phrygian mode next please! :)
Thank you for investigating MOÐES, great topic. You can never do enough mode classèß.
Yes, more mode stuff!

Excellent lesson, though, as usual .
Amazing timing: just learning about it! ❤
As always great lesson! Thanks!
Excellent, cheers from Canada.
I like songs in this mode. They sound wistful and nostalgic, as if looking back on something with fondness and a hint of sadness.
Just listened to Charlotte Anne by Julian Cope and realised that's mostly in the mixolydian mode. One of my very favourites of his songs.

I don't know about Signing or Sealing but you sure as hell Delivered.
Excellent. Really helpful!
I hope you do something with Phrygian and Lydian, as well. I like the way you present this stuff.
Yes, Lydian video is already planned, will eventually get round to Phrygian too I hope!
Lovely vibrato use on the intro snippit, delicious.

Thanks, great video! Love to know what drone pedal you used at around the 15 min mark, please?
More mode videos, please!
Very interesting. Thank you.
Yo La Tengo lesson next please! Most of Ira Kaplan's solos are mixo ! ' crispy duck: 6 cornered drone' in particular!
Yes, please!
good video mate
War Pigs by Black Sabbath is also in mixolydian mode.
Yes, great example!
I needed this. Mixolydian is my least favorite mode, so it's the one I understand the least.

Mode on bro. 😂 good video.
Cool, thank you
LA Woman, All Blues off Kind of Blue, Third Stone from the Sun ..
Can you use the modes to play the changes? It would be interesting to have a lesson on that if it is.
Fortunate Son by CCR is G Mixolydian.
this was good.
LA Woman by the Doors - great mixo solos by Robbie Krieger and Ray Manzarek.
Yes, great example!
John Lennon's solo on Get Back is mixolidian mode.
Hi Adrian, How do you do the drone?
I agree, @mftorino. Adrian, please tell us about your drone pedal.!
Sounds like the freeze pedal
You can create a very short loop if you have a looper..one note or one chord for a brief moment. I sometimes do it w a cheapo synth as that has less attack as a loop
Yes, it's an Electro Harmonix Freeze. I think I mention it in the previous Dorian video.
Groovy
Mazzy Star's Fade into you. I'm pretty sure I heard some Mixolydian there.
Jeff Beck, Freeway Jam is mixo

Hi Adrian, nice to see you again. I'm tone deaf and have no talent. Any advice?
lol, what a question, oh wait, you're serious?
And it has a pretty cool name
All Apologies by Niravana

I think Paperback Writer is G Mixolydian too. There's an F in the riff anyway.
Yes, definitely, good example!
I Feel Fine?
Weekly ritual: watch Adrian.
