  • What does environmental devastation actually look like? At TEDxVictoria, photographer Garth Lenz shares shocking photos of the Alberta Tar Sands mining project - and the beautiful (and vital) ecosystems under threat. (Filmed at TEDxVictoria.)

Just 43 comments and just 30'000 views for such an important subject. Can't believe it....

Many good and valid arguments... Unfortunately quite a few fallacies in this talk (ie, as he discusses CO2 emissions, there is an image of steam stacks in the background, giving the impression of massive CO2 emissions... Make no mistake, that is steam, not CO2).

I thought the same. This is clearly an environmental disaster of some kind, but showing us pictures of children he drifts into polemic. I would like to see the environmental impacts quantified. Has the water and soil been tested on site and at different distances from the projects? How vast is the boreal forest and would the entire ecosystem be damaged?

He didn't specify the stacks as emitting CO2.

Other than a few of the projects being cancelled since Garth made this presentation everything is a true horror story.

That's why the Canadian dollar needs to go up, because if it goes down it will export more crappy oil.

Parture That's why the US has to buck up and start paying their fair share of the taxes on export because we somehow allow them to process half of our oil and sell it back to us at a premium. US reliance on foreign resources is sad.

So now we are going to extremes in obtaining petroleum...the days of drilling /pumping it from the ground are ending. Seems to me we'd better develope alternatives...just my thoughts.

My advise is,get behind Elon Musk and lets change the world for the good of us all.
We do have a sustainable future and its already available, but the powers that be together with the avarice of the conglomerates and of course the ever expectant shareholders who require dividends, just exacerbate the situation.
Greed has taken over the world and ALL consequences are deemed as inconsequential simply because money matters and greed is good.

Batteries are not the solution, do some research into battery production, it's filthy and has a huge carbon footprint. A massive effort is needed to produce more solar everywhere and have more countries link up their power networks. If we had more electricity than we need then the extra can be used to produce hydrogen which can power cars.

@@jbbresers solar heavily relies on batteries too. batteries are the best solution we got.

It's funny to see how little research people will do when it comes to Canadian oil sands. 90% of investment comes from foreign countries & corporations. Some of the biggest oil sands operators are owned by U.S oil companies. Canada is an energy exporting country hence why it is so crippled by low oil prices. I'm curious to find out where these green preachers think Canada will get it's money from if they shutdown their oil production.. You think there will be funding for renewable energy projects when the country is buried in an avalanche of debt ? Only realistic solution is to use a percentage of royalties to fund research into more cleaner/efficient ways to access the oil & renewable energy projects.

This video is 8 years old, and we are still grappling with the true cost of oil and we are still arguing climate change, if it’s real or not. The disinformation and the distraction is well organized. We have a choice....
    1. Continue to play games and be oblivious to what we are doing, or,
    2. Take the nuclear option, but do not procrastinate.
Oh, and the other option , do nothing and live oblivious to all that is happening.

I blame Harper. Canada hasn't been in such a bad state since WWII. At least then we had the war to blame. Now it's just willful ignorance on his behalf.
