Exceptional physiology and a great work ethic and the right support leads to extraordinary results. Congrats to Ms. Valby for all of her recent accomplishments. Fully enjoy this time and these successes, which you've earned, and also because the health and prospects of distance runners is always tenuous.
Just incredible!! Welll done Parker! Great pace setting by Annie, and Parker's last K (2:53) was spectacular given the traffic. Next level stuff right here.💯💯💯💯
When Graham Blanks won all the runners cleared the way for him. Parker Valby had to go around so many girls. Her machine is strong! She runs with guts.
@@andrewh7599 It is ridiculous, when she set the 10K record, she lapped the entire field once, and quite a few runners twice... only one runner was classy enough to move over. The idea that I am only moving over if I like the runner lapping me is CRAZY!
he said she was "showing fatigue" but she clearly had gas left in the tank. can't wait to see her at the Olympic trials. it's going to be a great race.
Being able to sprint at the end of the race has no indication of how much you have “gas” do you have left. During the 1964 Olympic 10,000 m final Billy Mills went through 5K 1 second slower than his 5KPR. But he hung on for dear life, I was able to “pour on the gas” in the final hundred meters to snatch the win. It’s not because he had “gas in the tank.” He was exhausted and could not have run one second faster. But because in his training he always finished his workouts with a mad 400 m sprint, he trained his body to go fast, even while fatigued. We saw the same thing happen here with Riley.
Damn, that's a burn to put Tuohy in there when she hasn't even gone sub 15, and meanwhile to completely scrub Karissa Schweizer out. I mean, she's only gone sub 14:30 in the 5,000!
@@telford32 the list of runners who were incredible in high school and then broke down later and ultimately had disappointing careers is a long one. There’s actually an advantage to maturing a little later and not putting in huge miles early.
@@telford32 I wouldn't say that she's a wash. She didn't have a great CC season in some regards but did in others. She had quite the productive indoor season earlier this year though. Still, there are a lot of reasons why she might not have had the best cc season. Time will tell how her career unfolds and she has time to get things sorted out, she's still just a kid compared to me, haha! I don't have anything against her and hope that she'll come back strong during the indoor season and the upcoming track season!
Parker Valby is amazing, but I wish they would have shown where the pace setter finished. Only 9 seconds behind with a couple of laps to go. Probably the best race of her career too.
Thrilled to see an athlete supported by coaches who realize distance running is more than putting in miles. Edwin Moses (look him up if ya need 🙂) only ran over hurdles once a week. Ran 800s on grass in a park. Focussing on the body and the mental aspects are so powerful. Kudos to Parker and those in her circle!
Just awesome by Parker, imagine her PR was 15:20 before this, that was an epic run, and congratulations also the lady who finished 2nd, tough front running made this happen and also under the old record I imagine.
So true. I'll bet her arc trainer workouts are epic. She can push herself in a way others can't. Pushing through the pain... makes her the star that she is.
First, congratulations to Parker Valby. As I said in a comment regarding the NCAA Cross Country finals, when the big race between her and Katelyn Tuohy didn’t happen due to Katelyn Tuohy being sick at the time, Parker Valby still deserved that win, period! She took the lead early and never let up. And this record shows that she is getting better with every race. But here’s a couple of things to think about. Katelyn Tuohy is over her illness and appears to be back in shape. And if you look at the list of the best U.S. 5000 meter runners as of December 5th, out of 100 runners, Katelyn Tuohy is ranked #7 and Parker Valby is ranked #13. Having said that, I can’t help but wonder. If Katelyn Tuohy had not signed with Adidas when she did, she would have been eligible to run in this race. And what would the time have been if both of them had been in that race. Now I’m not saying Katelyn Tuohy would have won, but to see the two all time best NCAA distance runners on the track together for one last race, well, I think that would have been something special. And no matter who won, I have to think the time would have been much faster than 14:56. But, unfortunately, we’ll never know. Maybe, somehow, they’ll race each other again someday. But this particular race would have really been something to see. All we can do now though is just sit back and wonder.
How much faster could she have gone if she didn’t have to go to the outside to lap so many runners in the final laps? As ridiculously fast as she was, she could’ve gone even faster.
If she stays healthy, Parker has a good chance to make the U.S. Olympic team for Paris. More races with pro runners will pull her to even faster times.
That is a fair comparison. They both are fierce competitors. We don’t know what Valby’s ceiling is yet, much like Hocker back in 2021. Valby looked so strong in this race, and when she has a pack of faster competitors to pull her along, her times will drop dramatically. She will get that 14:52 Oly standard before U.S. trials. When Hocker won the 2021 NCAA and U.S. titles, he didn’t have blazing times on a world scale. He missed the 3:35 Oly standard, but went to Tokyo based on his world ranking. Proceeds to run 3:33.87 PB in semifinals. Then runs another PB of 3:31.40 in finals which was faster than the previous Oly record! Let’s hope Valby will respond similarly.
@@MichaelJ393The very best women runners are practically from another planet, when you look at their performances the last few years. There’s never been so many women distance runners with such incredible talent. If Parker Valby makes it to the Olympics 5,000 it would almost be a goal to not get lapped. I expect Gudaf Tsegay to run in the thirteens. Crazy!
@@kevinkaspTrue, the Ethiopians and Kenyans are on a different level. Even at Parker’s current age, many have run under 14:15. 18 year old Medina Eisa has run 14:15.54. I think Parker is capable of running in the 14:40’s now. Not special by world standards but considering her lack of running experience and improvement while battling injuries, she has shown great potential. I believe she has a chance to make the U.S. team as 3rd qualifier, but I would be very surprised if she made it past the semis to the Olympic 5k final.
@@MichaelJ393 I agree in thinking Parker is a special talent. And I think she has incredible mental toughness. I believe she has been in a state of injury since her senior year in high school. Throughout college she has never been able to run more than once or twice a week, and only for relatively short distances. I’ve never heard of a distance runner achieve what she’s done from training by swimming and working out on a kind of elliptical machine. And when you think about Parker versus her main rival Katelyn Tuohy, Parker’s natural talent becomes even more impressive to me. Katelyn had already been running for a few years when she got to middle school, and already had a coach for a year or two. In other words when Kate first got to high school she already had many years of year-round training and coaching. Parker on the other hand was halfway though high school when she joined the cross country team simply as a way to help stay in shape for playing lacrosse. So the fact that Parker could go from non-runner to the best in the country in so short a time, and setting national collegiate records, all the while being injured most of the time is pretty amazing to me.
Parker is a Beautiful runner. I can't believe some of the critics questioning her running style. Looking at the way she ran this race, I am guessing she can easily take 10 to 20 seconds off that time, and in the 14.30's she can be a real Olympic competitor.
Wow, you get a sense the sky is the limit for Parker. She has unbelievable talent that is just being tapped into. With 4 laps to go she hit the gas and never looked back. She has a bright future in track and field and hopefully many gold medals!!
Congrats to Parker Valby and her coach. She's no longer injured and now showing us what she can do. What a pacer! Better 'times' are ahead! Step aside Touhy, your coach, Henes, hasn't shown that she's making you any better. Rodenfels was a plus here, I think. It is such a more comfortable psychological race to follow someone than it is to lead. The strategy is in the head, not whether there is the full-on drafting of the air that announcers will make you think. Long distance runners do not run that fast to break the air long enough for air not to come back into its place in between the runners. Valby ran to the side of Rodenfels for quite a while here.
Gold in Tokyo was 20 seconds quicker than Parkers time. But Parker looks like she has way more to give over the next few years. Even exciting for us non-Americans here in New Zealand. She also has charisma to burn.
And she will continue to get stronger, as evidenced how she motored the hills at Panarama Farms in the NCAA Championship race. The "Energy Return Surface" installed after last year's meet as BU likes to call it, produced some amazing results with new records on BOTH Men's and Women's 5000 and others running big PRs. Parker even commented the time wasn't hard at all. She and Tuohy have so much to offer if health will allow.@@mark-w3w5p
