A simple example for Umat in Abaqus and comparison with von-mises criteria

In this video, you will learn how to create a model by using Umat code. Umat is useful to define the behaviour of a material and its response to the applied load. Some people think, Umat is for defining new material properties but it is not correct!!! For defining a new material behaviour it is possible to use USDFLD code but Umat is to define the material response and how the stress is distributed in part. For example, if you want to define the anisotropic behaviour or even new failure criteria it is better to use Umat code. to Define damage properties in the material it is common to use Umat code but it can be possible to use USDFLD instead. The video is short so you can learn this in less than 15 minutes and you will have the output and Abaqus CAE file.

Thanks for your excellent explanation, it was really useful and Comprehensible, I wanna define stress as a function of strain in elastic phase(instead of constant elastic modulus),for more explanation imagine a equation of tensile stress that included of constants and different powers of strain , using UMATS subroutine is suitable for me or there is any alternative ( better ) way for my goal? I will be thankful for more guidance.
