Mass Scaling in ABAQUS: Boost Simulation Speed with This Technique
Discover how to use mass scaling in ABAQUS to dramatically reduce simulation time and optimize computational resources. This tutorial dives deep into the concept of mass scaling, explaining its role in quasi-static simulations and how it can be applied effectively in processes like deep drawing, forging, and rolling. Mass scaling works by increasing the minimum time increment, allowing for faster results without compromising the accuracy of your simulation.
This video covers everything from the theoretical foundation of mass scaling to a hands-on setup in ABAQUS. Key topics include the differences between dynamic implicit and dynamic explicit steps, when and why to switch to an explicit solver, and how mass scaling can help manage large deformations and reduce calculation costs. Step-by-step instructions show how to set up and adjust mass scaling parameters in the ABAQUS interface, with detailed guidance on choosing between semi-automatic and automatic mass scaling options.
The tutorial also compares models with and without mass scaling to illustrate the impact on simulation speed and accuracy. Tips are provided on how to verify the stability of quasi-static conditions using energy ratios, ensuring your results remain reliable. Perfect for engineers and researchers aiming to optimize their ABAQUS simulations and reduce runtime.

Why would anyone look at von mises stresses for an embankment, made of soil (soil that doesnt have uniform properties with depth)? Downvote.
Hello, did you write the results of this experiment in the form of an article?
Hi. No, we didn't document the results of this project for publication.
Hello, I tried through same method (step by step) but while running the job I am getting error that part-2 have some elements without any section assigned. Can you help me with this?
Hi, This might happen when the material proprties is not defined correctly (i.e. the section was not assigned) or when the geometry was created the part type was not set correctly.
do we need to do both intel kit? like base and hpc? or one is enough
You need to install both tool kits.
Gracias.
how to read msh.h5 (fluent meshing file) in openfoam?
Hello. If you're using ANSYS Workbench you can easily go through the "Meshing" part of the project and use export option from the menu in order to save the grid in ".msh" format then enter "fluentMeshToFoam" command in the terminal to import the nodes and elements into OpenFOAM directories.
out of curiosity, what version of abaqus 2023 is this? were there any patches or hotfixes installed?
Hello, It's just the initial version of 2023, with no patches or hotfixes.
Thank you for your video ,but what's the difference between 2 ways: The way that you couple the coordinate with the bottom surface, the other way that couple a RP with this surface, waiting for your help
Hi, In both methods you need to constrain the surface nodes from all direction so in summary there is not much difference between these two method. However the second method has more advantages as it is easier to develop in modeling.
the maximum Mises stress is 506MPa, is that reasonable ?i think its a large number
Thank you for your attention. When no plastic definition is provided, the resulting stress can reach excessively high values, potentially leading to significant issues. Please note that this is a free tutorial designed to demonstrate the application of ABAQUS in biomechanics. It is not based on academic papers or literature but was created using random data. It could have been much better if you mentioned about what the post processor illustrate on log life scale. There is no mention about that part with relate to the post processed results from FE safe...
Thank you for your thoughtful comment. In this example, our focus was on comparing theoretical results with FE-SAFE results, so we only considered the maximum point where failure occurred. Explaining the other points outside the critical zone was beyond the scope of this tutorial. If you have a specific topic in mind, feel free to reach out to Saman Hosseini, who can provide more detailed information in a one-on-one meeting.
Now its hard to find intel one API 2022 version for both base and HPC. Has anyone tried intel 2025+ VS2022
It doesn't work for me (I have Abaqus 2019) probably because Intel 2025 doesn't have the ifort compiler abaqus seems to require (it has been discontinued and replaced by ifx)
Hi, have you succeeded linking intel 2025 vs2022?
بسیار عالی بود ، متشکرم دوستان عزیز، برایتان آرزوی بهترینها را دارم.
Thank you so much!
Yyyh
Thank you so much sir, nice explanation. I am doing simulation for layer deposition and encountered the problem like '' The volume of 2 elements is zero, small, or negative. Check coordinates or node numbering, or modify the mesh seed. In the case of a tetrahedron this error may indicate that all nodes are located very nearly in a plane. The elements have been identified in element set ErrElemVolSmallNegZero", Plz give me the suggestion for such type of error.
Hello, thanks for your comment. There is no direct solution for this error. However, if the material, thermal loading, and other parameters are correct, I recommend checking the mesh quality. Additionally, you can use HyperMesh to achieve better mesh quality. If further assistance is needed, I suggest scheduling an online consultation session to investigate the problem in detail.
It's amazing. I am studying the additive manufacturing simulation using abaqus. This video is helpful to me. Could you share the cae files with me, thank you very much.
Hi, thanks for your comment. To access the tutorial files, please contact our tutor, Saman Hosseini, at saman.hosseini@hyperlyceum.com.
thank you Samon Husseini for your sharing. I would like to know that Su=570mpa,the 570mpa from where?
Hi, great question. Su, refers to the material properties that can be obtained from the Fe-safe database or found in literature.
Hello, Is it possible for visual studio 2022 to work with abaqus 2021, as I am trying to install visual studio community 2019 but the version does not exist.
Hi, I recommend checking out this detailed guide on how to properly link Abaqus with Intel compilers and Visual Studio: hyperlyceum.com/linking-abaqus-and-fortran-compiler/ It provides step-by-step instructions and additional troubleshooting tips to ensure compatibility between these components.
Are the files available to download for free?
Hi, As of now, they are for sale, but we might offer discounts from time to time.
Can you post your model input (XXX.inp) files?
Hi, you can access the requested file on our website or directly through the link below: hyperlyceum.com/product/restart-analysis-tutorial-abaqus/
In the last step (intel oneAPI 2024 + vs 2022), you can add the following line to your abaqus_v6.env file to help with linking issues: link_sl='LINK /NODEFAULTLIB:LIBCMT.LIB /dll /def:%E /out:%U %F %A %L %B'
Does anybody know, if it is possible for porous zone to let only one phase go through with Interfoam solver ? I have two fluids. One of them is like a slurry with very very small particles. This fluid should not go through the porous zone. Only the other fluid phase should go.
thank a lot To get plastic elastic analysis, you have to follow the same process
The file you gave in the comment is the straight line though??
Thanks for your feedback. I double checked the file and it looks good would you please give it a shot again and if you face any problem please send your id and screenshot of what you see to following email: administrator@hyperlyceum.com

is there a way to extract residuals as field data so we can visualise such data in 3D via paraview?
Hi, you can use pyFoamPlotRunner to make a live graph of the residuals

SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM! Abaqus is connected to Fortran, but verification fails. I suggest the following solutions in order: - in SIMULIA folder find file "abaqus_v6.env", edit in notepad and add at the end the line: link_sl='LINK /NODEFAULTLIB:LIBCMT.LIB /dll /def:%E /out:%U %F %A %L %B' - in SIMULIA folder find file "custom_v6.env", edit in notepad and add at the end the line: compile_fortran += ['/names:lowercase',] - use visual studio 2019 instead of 2022 (but that's just my guess) There is also a much easier way to connect Fortran to Abaqus: After installing visual studio, Intel OneAPI and Intel OneAPI HPC, just find the launcher.bat file in the SIMULIA folder and edit it in notepad. After the line: @echo off add the line: call "C:\Program Files (x86)\Intel\oneAPI\compiler\latest\env\vars.bat" intel64 vs2019 (or vs2022 depending on version of visual studio) and that's it. No need to add environment variables, edit shortcut paths, etc. The command line will show that Fortran is not connected, but it will work in CAE anyway.
Thanks
Thank you for the interesting video, I have followed all the steps and all is OK and even the link is established for Abaqus files and not only shortcut. the command "abaqus info=system" works well and i see the Fortran compiler well set up. However, in the verifying step, I have an error
you are the best!!

I'm pretty sure that I had followed every step correctly. but when I verify my abaqus info(by using: abq2023 info=system), it showed : C++ Compiler: Unable to locate or determine the version of a C++ compiler on this system. I checked other community, there are also some people have same problem with mine. I would like to ask that do you have any solution for this error? thank you!
Hi thank you for the video. I followed every steps; however, my verification has failed instead of pass. I noticed that when I opened the command window, the prompt is C:\Windows\System32 instead of C:\temp. Could that be the reason?
