What to Expect If You Buy a Vintage Receiver: The Once Over for the Yamaha CR-620

- If you buy a vintage receiver in "working condition," or even one that has been "serviced," but not "restored" or "refurbished," then it will generally require some or all of these things: cleaning and polishing, potentiometer treatment (with DeOxIT), light replacement, and bias adjustment. Real restoration will also require replacing electrolytic capacitors and, perhaps, some transistors, but this video covers just the "once over" to get the receiver looking and sounding good now. I take off the case and faceplate, clean everything, treat the pots, replace the dial and meter lights, and adjust the bias current. It looks beautiful! Finally, a listening test with the Moody Blues! Sounds great, too!
In this video, it's a Yamaha receiver that gets the once over, but these basic actions are common to many, if not all, vintage receivers.

The moody blues, brilliant choice!
Hit those stubborn screws with a bit of heat from a butane torch and they will move.
Just make sure to protect any nearby plastic from the flame and heat.

I have owned a 620 since 1979 and probably listened to that same record many times over. I know I need to deoxydise it and replace the lights. Do you know if the screws are japanese Philips?
It seems like such an easy task to clean the pots and switches but you know the manufacturers is going to make you work hard for it. And the wiring for those pesky lights! Still, if it was easy, you wouldn't get so much satisfaction when the job was done! Lovely unit, and lovely sound - I'll have to check out that Moody Blues album...
I'd forgotten how much I liked the songs that got airplay back in the day! And I'd been feeling bad, or something, about being a prog fan with no Moody Blues.

That is just lovely sounding (if TH-cam and my quite modern system are being faithful). I've always been a Marantz guy when it comes to retro flavour preference (what I grew up with as a toddler, which is where my music and audiophile journey began, I love my parents) but I might have to give the Yamahas a try at some point. Good resolution and dynamics for the time, and a nice tight thump to it while maintaining that retro colour. Very nice, and you must have a decent microphone, way better sound sample than most.
I also had an audiophile dad: I grew up with McIntosh. I've been pleased with the Yamaha. I couldn't say I'm surprised because I didn't know what to expect.
I've now been through Kenwood, JVC, MCS,
Pioneer, and Yamaha.
(All '76-'80) Thus far, Yamaha is my sound of preference.
One of my best buddies had one of these in 78-80. Beautiful. I had a Pioneer SX-450 (15 watts) and beautiful. Got a 1979 Sansui G 4500 (40-45 watts?) that was nice. They seemed like they had plenty of power. Gave the Sansui and a Marntz 2238b away. Who would know?
Man my lights don’t work, I didn’t get any voltage from the pots. Did learn how to bias the unit and it was my first bias set, totally stoked about that. Great video Thank you!

Very interesting video, thanks. I did some similar work on my Yamaha CR-200 recently. The dial and meter light set up is similar to the CR-620. For the dial light, I put the LED in sideways as it was easier, but your method would have been better. For hard to reach pots and switches, I just flooded them with a syringe full of isopropyl alcohol. You didn't test the signal strength and tuning meters. I mention this, as on my CR-200, both functions are combined in one meter, which happened to be stuck. After confirming the presence of on/off station voltages at the meter terminals, I got it going again by loosening the set screw on the back of the meter. Also, my stereo LED would not come on. I got it working by moving the VCO pot slightly. Not sure if it is the same circuitry in the CR-620 though. Regards.
Just started working on vintage gear last year around june... had not seen into a Yamaha. I guess it's not the easies and probably I'll not pick these to buy/work on. I'll leave them for you more experienced guys LoL ! and stick with Pioneer and Nikko for the time being. Nice video and insights :- )

Are you from Lancaster PA Ive been looking for someone to work on my two that dont charge an arm and leg. Im having trouble with the stereo/mono buttons theyll play both speakers in mono but only the left side when in stereo

Nah. That's vinyl veneer, so I'd have to match the color exactly. Or replace the veneer. Otherwise, any repair risks making it worse.
